A newspaper is reporting were looking to take Steven clunker on loan from qpr with an 8m buy option.

{Ed003's Note - Sounds a lot of dosh for a clunker tbh.}

I rate him. I think it would be a good signing for us

I think that would be a good signing, got to trust RK to get the best out of a promising defender. Interestingly the story is in the Mail and almost 1 year to the day they linked us with Caulker for 8m as a replacement for Lovren. Just rehashing old connections?

Lazy journalism, putting 2 and 2 together and getting 8 million.

I remember two years ago before he signed for Cardiff we were being linked quite heavily with him and plenty of us thought he'd be a great signing. He had a very topsy-turvy season with Cardiff, scored a couple of goals and had the odd standout performance. Then he joined QPR and never played up to the same qualities he had shown when he'd first had a loan spell at Swansea.

He's a gamble, but the talent is there. It'll be a big ask if the club intend for him to be the starting centre back, but could be a great option off the bench whilst Gardos is injured. I would imagine Koeman will have a big say in who we bring in at centre back, he'll know if a player has the right abilities and can bring something to the team.

Dont panic buy this clown he has only been relegated twice in a row with Cardif and QPR let's not make it a hatrick of relegations Spuds new what they were doing when they sold him to Cardiff I would sooner you back for Astori than this clumsey clown

He's got the mobility of a crushed slug and been in two successive relegations with back-to-back worst defensive records in the league.

As a loan, however, to replace the not-exactly-quick 4th choice Gardos, I suppose we could do worse. At 23, maybe a season with the coaching staff can piece his game back together, as he was once vaguely promising.

I've felt all along that Saints will buy an Alderweireld replacement and try and get in a loan as well to cover Gardos, and if Caulker is that player, perhaps it could work.

Unless they view him as their Alderweireld replacement, in which case we can only assume the black box has become self-aware and turned against its human oppressors. It must be destroyed.

Qwertyell: Totaly agree, if Caulker is a replacement for Gardos then I think that would be a good bench warmer but we would need a quality central defender on top of that. Also Chambers is again doing the rounds and i'm sorry be neither player is at the level of Toby. I suspect this is just rehashed media as usual. We will probably sign someone toatally left field who is not being mentioned in the media as is usually the case with Southampton. COYR!!

One thing for sure is that we need to bring in someone of Toby's calibre is we intend on wanting to compete and develop from last year and I trust RK and the board to find the 'right' person. Exciting times Saints fans

It was reported before he signed for QPR that he had been spotted at Staplewood - was either asking too much in wages or he turned us down if the sighting was legit.

Wage demands were ridiculous!
