Rumours that Burnley - now in the market for a new striker are looking at Shane Long, as much as I appreciate his work rate he doesn't quite have the quality to be a starter at saints, at 30 any offer In the 7-10mil region would be good business for both clubs. I'd rather see Gallagher given more playtime than Long.

Makes sense for him. He will be third choice minimum and needs game time. If we need outright pace we can always play Redmond through the middle if we don't get anyone else in.

I think we could end up really regretting getting rid of Long. Gallagher is an unknown quantity still and we need the cover.

Shane Long is not a quality goalscorer. Granted he has scored goals and important ones for us. But he wastes a lot of golden opportunities. I trust Gallagher to become a better player for us. Admittedly they are two completely different players but as cyprus has said we have the same qualities in Redmond.

I know the argument is tactics and gamestyle and creative flair from elsewhere on the pitch but we struggled for goals last year and might sell 2 strikers. I know they aren't 25 a year guys but it was a different option and it puts a check of a lot of stress and trust into the fitness of 2 main strikers and an academy player.

Well we're rumoured to be looking at Luciano Vieto too, who can play as striker, whilst also behind the main striker, which could swing it I guess.

Sam Gallagher would be a risk at best, he is not PL quality just yet and may never will be. I think Shane deserves another chance especially with Lemina coming in. Too many times in Puels time he was just used as a hare with long balls belted up the field with not much chance of him doing anything with them. With a decent midfielder that reads the game well and can put in a precision pass behind their back four Shane may be a very dangerous player as he was in Koemans last season.

Shane had a shocking conversion record last year, I remember games where he missed chance after chance which is incredibly frustrating. I'd also rather let Gallagher have a chance too develop, he has all the makings to be a top player and is clearly highly regarded by the club.

If he goes then so be it, but I'd like to keep him personally. he can score, but he obviously won't score a hatfull. but he is a great player to have against certain opposition, he's got a great engine and he's an honest player. He works ridiculously hard chasing down balls and hassling defenders, and he probably indirectly makes more chances than he scores. if we play a high press game he's ideal for it as fresh legs/ back-up etc.

The thing most people seem to be ignoring is we need both him and Gallagher - 3 strikers wouldn't be enough so wherever you stand on Long vs. Gallagher, we should be keeping both.

People saying Gallagher won't be premier league quality? A lot of people stated the same thing about Harry Kane! We're going to swap him for MS but nobody wanted to lol everyone said he wasn't premier league quality now look at him! I'm by no means saying Gallagher will be the next Harry Kane but what I am saying is give the boy a chance he can strike a ball and he can score goals just needs a chance.

Sam Gallagher could well be a top talent. I've liked him from the start. Looked a good prospect and compared to today, why can't he be Saints' version of Harry Kane? Give him a go. You never know, Gallagher might be the new Alan Shearer!

I'm too much of a Shane Long admirer to want him to leave us. Maybe in future seasons, but definitely fancy keeping the Irishman for this season. He plays a key role as a squad player and gives Southampton some depth, as well as experience and tremendous work rate.

Someone above mentioned Rickie Lambert. Damn right, Rickie Lambert. Get him back. It's such a shame his career took a nose dive since leaving St Mary's. Cardiff won't play him much this season, I'm think I read/ heard their manager (Neil Warnock) say he can't fit him into his regular plans, as much as he'd like to. If Lambo wants one last hurrah, come back and take that vacant number 9 shirt.

One last thing, following on from the (probably) impressive signing of Super Mario (Lemina) can we keep the credit card out a it longer and stick a bid in for The Ox? I'd love to have Chamberlain back at the club. Such an exciting player and seems like a good lad and a rather cool dude too. I love him.

Good luck today in the first match of the season. Fancy our chances of getting all three points against (an improving) Swansea. going to be a good game I think. Enjoy it if you're at the game, anyone/ everyone.
