I'd like to know why the he'll Liverpool is apparently such a attractive club to go to they haven't won anything for ages they don't even look like they're going to VVD is a top class Cb and could get into any team in the league so why Liverpool.

Bang on the money The Saint 92. Couldn't have put it better. If he was going anywhere he'd be better off at Chelsea or City or even Spuds! Personally if he stays another 12 months Barcelona PSG or RM will come calling.
Not many of our players who gone to Liverpool have improved. Most have stagnated. So quite baffling. Didn't think the Dutch and the Germans liked each other particularly!

Adam Lallana says they are plus they double the wages they get at Saints.

I understand they get double the wage but they haven't accomplished anything for a long time and they don't have the pulling power to sign players from big teams so they look at us and think we'll take them because we can give them more money it's a absolute joke.

Let's hope all the Barcelona ex players come iut and say coutinho should join them and see how Liverpool enjoy him being unsettled.

{Ed001's Note - you probably have not noticed, but the current ones have already been doing so, particularly Neymar.}

I think klopp himself is probably more of a draw than Liverpool. Seems like he could make a difference there and if I was a player then he's the kind of manager I'd love to play for.

Agree though - if I was VVD I'd wait a year and hope Barcelona come knocking.

HI Ed, I am intrigued to hear what someone like yourself, with considerable first hand knowledge of the game, feels about such things as the VVD 'situation'. do you think clubs should do what Saints are doing and leave the player to have a think? What if any is the solution? thank you.

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea what the club can do when things reach this point, really it should be down to the FA, who are there (supposedly) to enforce the rules, then UEFA and FIFA if needed. I hate to see this tapping up, it is a pointless thing to do, VVD wanted to go anyway, Saints knew that before January, that he wanted to go this summer.

To be perfectly honest, the whole situation has turned into a mess. Soton are signing players with promises they will let them move on in the future when the opportunity arises. Then they don't want to let them go when that opportunity presents itself because it doesn't suit them. That's fine, but stop making promises you will sell then! I know it is difficult for the club, as they want to build a stronger side, rather than keep losing all their best players each season. However they have got themselves in this situation by reneging on agreements made when they sign players.

VVD (like a string of other players) have shown themselves to be spoilt brats and just care about what they want. So none of them are coming out of this looking good either. However, to be fair to the players, they have all believed they would be allowed to leave and are only after the move they believe the club had told them they could have when they joined in the first place.

It is Liverpool (and other clubs in the past) that are the problem in the end. If they would all approach Southampton in the legal way, then I am sure that they could have had business done without any acrimony. Fonte last season could have been at Man Utd, but the Saints were furious about the way he was approached. It gave Soton an excuse to renege on their agreements and caused more issues for everyone and no one ended up winning in that case.

The FA need to do more to crack down on illegal approaches. If there is no enforcement of rules, then everyone just does what they want and we end up with the mess that is currently happening. It has to come from the top or anarchy rules and the strongest will win, which means the richest will have their own way. Which is the way it is already heading, sadly.}

Thank you! I asked the question and appreciate receiving an amazing, informative, thoughtful, honest and thought provoking answer :-) Thanks Ed001.

{Ed001's Note - welcome.}

Surely the club aren't telling these players that they can go after one or 2 seasons though? I know contracts mean sod all now apart from making a player more expensive, but they surely aren't saying that as soon as a big club shows interest the player can go? .

Like you said I guess if things were done legitimately in the first place deals would be done but saints are trying to make some sort of a stand against underhand tactics.

Are they not saying "give us 3 good seasons and we'll sell when we get a suitable offer?

{Ed007's Note - They might well be doing that mate, how do you think you got Wanyama, Forster and VVD from Celtic? We sell the club to potential players as a chance to play in Europe and as a stepping stone to England and the club won't stand in the way if a suitable offer comes along. No offence to Southampton but maybe they tell players that they have a chance of moving to a 'bigger' club or a CL team. I wish the VVD thing would hurry up though, we need our share off the cash to hopefully sign Paddy Roberts :)
