We have this situation every year with being pretty clueless as supporters as to what is happening regarding potential sales and purchases. We do though have to stump up just after the season ends to pay for next years season ticket. We pay up and whilst doing so have no idea what team we will be supporting during the upcoming season . The club have done us reasonably proud over the past seasons with their shrewd buying but got a feeling that trend is coming to an end with the massive amounts of money pouring in. With our wage structure and need to balance the books it may well be that our desire to challenge the top 6 will be thwarted due to financial reasons. If the football is of a good standard to watch and we hold our own in the PL we may have to settle for that rather than try to compete in a world where stupid money is being thrown around like confetti. The top 6 maybe 7 have distanced themselves from the other clubs due to this injection of cash and that has ruined PL football and below forever.

And you can see the future? or are you just massively overreacting to the fact we've not signed anybody in a month while the rest of the league throws money at average players not worth it.

Did you actually think becoming a top 6 club would be easy? Improve our position in the league by 1 each year until we win the league just like on football manager right?

I am not clairvoyant agreed but if you don't replace quality players with similar you end up with 46 points. I respect your opinion but if we get served up the kind of football we had at St. Mary's in the second half of the season our fan base will continue decreasing. That is my opinion and I maybe completely wrong but that is what this site is all about, opinions.

I would rather we went about our business and nurtured young exciting talent, made some money developing them and played some attractive football, then go throwing money about to qualify for the Champions league. It's a dangerous game that so many clubs fall into. Just look at the size of clubs clawing their way out of the lower leagues because they are bankrupt and over spending on wages!
We have an amazingly well run club, yes it's frustrating to see us sell the quality we have, but we still seem to find more! I'll put trust in the board.

Tal you have a very low expectation of where you want us to be in the future. The proof is in the pudding and that is, if you want to compete and win trophies, you must invest. Yes I also like to see us developing talent too but if that means we run the risk of mid table mediocrity, or even worse, annual relegation battles or relegation, what's the point of that. We must run the club well, invest in the team and win trophies to stimulate growth and success. I don't buy into your philosophy of surviving, aiming low. At least that's how it reads, don't if that's what you meant. Success will breed success both on and off the pitch. I don't see us being that fairy tale the way we are going.

I'm not sue what chrisdownj expects. Maybe the Board should run everything past him before he renews his season ticket? Or maybe SFC should publish a manifesto outlining what they're be doing in the close season, giving our competitors a heads up on our targets enabling them to gazump us?

There are some good posts here - sometimes, but mostly it's a glass half full pessimists.

COYR's!

Sorry Leggdad that you feel the way you do regarding my post. I have my opinion, you have yours. Loads of posts say remember where we were 6 or 7 seasons ago, I do remember and supported the club 100% during those troubled times and even turned up to every game when Branfoot was in charge. What I would say is look where we were 3 seasons ago when Poch turned us in to an extremely attractive football playing team. RK continued this to a lesser extent subsequently. I went to every home game last season including all cup matches and during half time a large number of supporters would comment as to what has happened to the club in a very unhappy manner. Many stated they would seriously consider not renewing their season tickets, I renewed mine which turned up yesterday. I will never not support SFC it is in my blood but I must admit I left St Mary's on several occasions pretty disillusioned last season and not feeling I had in any way had value for money. Just the way I see it. Sorry.

30years I've been a saints fan and not once have I thought at pre season we were in with a chance of winning the league, why? Because we're not a big club with a big stadium and big wages competing with the elite. We are Southampton a family club who nurture youngsters in the art of football. We need to be realistic and take our place as a we'll run club with sustainability, long term. Success may come in the future if we have large amounts of investment but we will not risk our community club for short term gains. We will keep punching and slowly build until we're seen as a worthy contender for investers. Then maybe the stadium will come and the profits will rise then the wages can be adjusted and players will not use us as a stepping stone anymore. Support the badge for all it represents not for glory from greed.
