There are rumours in the German press that Southampton are 1 of a number of Premier League clubs interested in Sandro Wagner of Darmstadt. He is a 6ft 4in striker, 28 years old who has scored 14 goals in the Bundesligue this season, the second highest German scorer behind Thomas Müller. The fee could be around €3million.

I hope not. We have a wealth of attacking options. Would only be interested in this as a transfer of Pelle does go.

Question to the Eds

If Man U win the Europa Cup, thus qualifying for the Champions League, and finish 5th in the Premier; would that open an opportunity for Saints to qualify for Europ next season by finishing 8th?

Deutsche Saint

{Ed002's Note - No.}

That's a shame, I thought that was the case! How does it work then ed?

{Ed002's Note - Why on earth would you expect Southampton get a place in Europe for finishing eighth?}

2.) 07 May 2017 17:05:50
Why not Eds? If utd finish fifth they'll get Champions League meaning that spot will go to the team that finish 6th. They also won the league cup meaning that a place will go to 7th place and it's Arsenal/ Chelsea in the FA cup final, so surely if Chelsea win that it'll go to the team at eighth (won't be us)

{Ed002's Note - Of course not - to play in Europe you need to qualify. If Manchester United finish 5th and win the Europa League there will be 5 teams in the Europa Leage and two in the Europa League. They don't give places to sides that don't qualify.}

ED002 - I think the point was that in past seasons, if a team qualify, who have already qualified via a cup, then usually the place goes to league finishes. I didn't think that 8th would qualify regardless, but I think this is why people may think it will.

{Ed002's Note - There are still only the seven places available.}

That's a shame, just read that he has signed a contract with Beijing, hopefully Saints will move a bit quicker if they are serious about Tuchel.

I suggested Roger Schmidt some time back but got the old unbelievable ratings. He is available having parted with Bayer Leverkusen earlier this year. He is a great coach and specializes in the high pressing game that we came to enjoy under Poch.

How about a look at the Bundesligue for a replacement for VVD (if it happens), maybe Jannik Vestergaard at Borussia Mönchengladbach would fit the bill.

Whatever the situation we will probably play brinksmanship and end up losing out to other clubs. Looks like Sandro Wagner is leaving Hoffenheim for Bayern as soon as the window opens; how about the board being bold for once and making a move on him. We will have to pay about 20million more than we would have when we were offered him 18 months ago. He's a perfect replacement for Pelle. While we're at it how about a move on Jannick Vestergaard as a solid replacement for Van Dijk.

The dire problems we are in now have been caused by the wait, wait and wait again attitude. 2 examples that come to mind, firstly Saints always need a big target man up front; when Pelle moved to China there was an ideal replacement available immediately from Germany called Sandro Wagner playing for Darmstadt (scored 14 goals in 2015/ 16 Bundesligue) . He made it clear that he wanted to join Southampton, nothing happened. He joined Hoffenheim for 2 million euros - note about 1.5million pounds at that time. Saints finally made a move in the last close season for 14.5million pounds. He turned it down and extended his contract at Hoffenheim. He has now played his first 6 international matches for Germany, scoring 5 goals

The second is on the Manager, Saints made a move on Roger Schmidt, formerly of Bayer Leverkusen about April, but instead of making a decision, getting a signature and paying a retainer until the post was vacant Les Reed and co did nothing so it was a case of sod you lot I'm off to China from Mr Schmidt. Saints sacked Puel at about the same time and were a bit surprised when their choice had gone. They made a desperate move on Thomas Tuchel of Dortmund, but he didn't want to be seen as second best. So we were then left with hunting around looking for someone with a foreign enough name that might fit the bill, now we are going backwards because the person who is supposed to be able to make decisions can't.

Julian Nagelsmann is under the radar of Bayern, he is 29 years old and has been the Head Coach at Hoffenheim for 18 months, before that he coached the youth teams for 5 years. He is a real rebel and it would be good to see him prowling the touchline in a pair of jeans and t-shirt rather than the usual.
