David Okereke signs for Club Brugge. Southampton unlikely to go after another forward. Adam Blackmore said 'perhaps' another #10', but a CB is the priority.

Anyone have any ideas as to why Stuart Armstrong was omitted from the Austria squad?

EC_Saint

1.) 09 Jul 2019 16:28:03
Any rumours of CB links?

Armstrong misses out due to illness.

2.) 09 Jul 2019 21:44:25
Food poisoning ec.

3.) 11 Jul 2019 09:09:01
I haven't seen any names linked, though rumours have spread that Hoedt may get a second chance this season. Therefore we could see a back line of Bednarek + Vestergaard, Yoshida or Hoedt, with Stephens likely to leave. Klarer may make a couple of appearances.
Although, I'd imagine we'll be linked with some players once Lemina is out.

And thanks for the Armstrong update!

Speculatory post:

These are the current rumours, and my expectations:

- Claude Puel stays
- Callum Slattery and Yan Valery promoted

Departures:
van Dijk - Man City
Clasie - Lazio
Bertrand - Liverpool
Long - West Ham
Tadic - Inter
Reed - Leeds (Loan)

Rumoured arrivals:
Semedo - Sporting (CB)
Haps - AZ Alkmaar (LB)
Bruma - Galatasary (LW)
Chedjou - Galatasary (CB)

I expect Rodriguez to stay and for the club to sign a midfielder and possibly a forward we are not linked with (similar to the Højbjerg, Romeu and Redmond signings which had little to no news coverage before unveiling) .

Potential 2017/ 18 First XI:

Austin
Bruma. Gabbi. Redmond
Romeu. Davis
Haps. Semedo. Chedjou. Cedric
Forster.

EC_Saint

1.) 05 Jun 2017 16:19:18
Chedjou isn't a Saints signing in anyway, far too old. With the form Yoshida and Stephens showed last season I don't think we need another big name CB unless Virgil leaves. I'd be happy to take someone young with great potential as 4th choice. Haps would be a great replacement for Bertrand if he were to leave. Bruma is off to LB Leipzig I believe so don't think we'll be getting him. We need to shift a load of dead weight and bring through more youth next season. Yan Valery is a player I really like the look of.

2.) 06 Jun 2017 13:30:21
So you think that yoshida and Stephens are the future of the saints defence.

3.) 06 Jun 2017 19:18:57
No if Virgil stays, he can play with either Stephens or Yoshida. If Virgil goes bring in Semedo to play alongside either Yoshida or Stephens. Stephens is a great young player who will only get better so I do see him as Saints future. Yoshida was brilliant last season so I'd like to see him remain part of our plans. Would still like us to sign a young CB with great potential as a replacement for Caceres.

Virgil Van Dijk has signed a 6 year contract until 2022! Great commitment and loyalty - it seems that he intends to be here until he's 30.

1.) 07 May 2016 13:31:01
Great News! just seen this aswell.

2.) 07 May 2016 13:43:24
hopefully the first of many

noticed he said he 'spoke to the coach' in the interview, maybe a clue that Koeman will sign too?

3.) 07 May 2016 18:34:24
This is huge! Great news and shows perhaps the start of a fantastic Summer. This feels like a new signing! Although 87 will probably say it's too sell him on for maximum profit!

4.) 07 May 2016 21:41:52
Haha! Probably right rayzor! Has anyone seen him since we beat city? Strangest supporter ever. deadly silent when we win, hammers the team, board, players, manager, kit man, koemans dog when we lose. lol.

5.) 09 May 2016 06:45:53
Such a huge signing. If we can get RK on board to sign up for a new contract I really believe we can now keep our big names. If we can and with a little bit of tweeking we have a team to scare most opposition and be proud of. There is real belief about us at the moment. Please sign up RK.

6.) 09 May 2016 09:09:12
I noticed that Steve Davis said something good along the lines of keeping this squad together and progressing next season - here's hoping.

7.) 10 May 2016 22:14:04
I've said to jof in a earlier conversation
If koeman signed we have a good chance of next season van dijk is a great sign with contract
Let's hope koeman signs
When did I ever gun koeman and call him a dog
Kit man can only work with what he's got just would not be fair would it lol.

January Transfer Rumours:

Out:
Victor Wanyama to Arsenal for £15M upwards *if he doesn't renew his contract

In:
Demerai Gray - Birmingham City winger valued at around £5M
Gianelli Imbula* - FC Porto central midfielder valued at around £15/20M if Wanyama leaves

EC_Saint

1.) 12 Dec 2015 13:04:41
If we sell vic say 18m we will only spend 5-10m on replacement as that's how we now operate, and it will bite us in the a***.

2.) 12 Dec 2015 18:08:29
All you people that think wanyama is a quality player are living in lala land, he doesn't want to be at Saints and it shows . Get rid and move on, COYS.

3.) 13 Dec 2015 17:23:42
The club have spent close to 150 million on players, 30 million on the training ground and will be investing a further 20 million in said training ground. Yes we've let a lot of players go but you cannot say that money hasn't been and isn't being reinvested.

We've hit a bad patch of form, like every other team does at some point, it's not the end of the world.

4.) 15 Dec 2015 21:30:17
It is only our club that put wages in transfer fee to boost it
Man U have spent 350mil and I bet that ain't counting agent fee and wages and fee to fa and vat
I Think that's wot they mean biy we march on And the southampton way.

5.) 26 Dec 2015 03:47:18
Southampton have beaten the dregs + 1 this season. Norwich, Swansea, Sunderland, Bournemouth and had ONE good win at Chelsea. Arsenal at home next, West Ham away then Saints have played all the teams, SaintySaintSaint. This is more than a bad patch when you also consider the year as a whole. Saints may well have spent 150 million on players but you cannot in your right mind say that the money spent has improved the squad. Players like Martina, Yoshida, Caulker, Elia, Djuricic, Stekelenberg Gardos. Waste of time. Could have spent all that money ( loanees wages /fees too) on one gem. And or used the younger players more. I agree it's not the end of the world, but I fear for Saints if Koeman doesn't start earning his corn. He signed / loaned all of the above (bar the absolutely hopeless Yoshida) and has Juanmi, Clasie and Cedric yet to really perform- certainly those three aren't a patch on the players they replaced. I suppose it is only half way through and we could yet surprise a few teams, but I believe we need some creativity and a goalscorer as a priority. Pelle has six. In half a season. Not good enough. Tadic is an enigma. I'd get Seager in pronto and buy a class creative player. Just my opinion. Merry Christmas all you Saints fans. Here's to a successful year! 😀.

Osvaldo has moved to Porto on a free-transfer, good luck to him!

God have mercy on them.

2.) 05 Aug 2015 14:12:05
Good luck to them.

3.) 05 Aug 2015 15:03:37
i actually laughed when I saw that on skysports. I can not believe a team as big as Porto have taken the risk on him. Madness in my opinion.

4.) 06 Aug 2015 15:23:55
As a player he's quality. But as we all know, he's a nut job.

A very poor Saturday game, there seems to be agreement that Hughes will be leaving. What would you call like to see in terms of a rebuild?

I'd be keen for Southampton to go for Montella or Cocu but I would not mind Monk - feels like the club are keen on a UK core, maybe since Brexit.

Then, some players need to go: Hoedt, Austin, Long, Yoshida and perhaps Davis. I am a fan of many of these players, but they cannot compete in the PL.

On a more positive note, while Targett was caught out a few times, it's good to see him playing and Obafemi showing promise. I also hear that Harry Reed is doing brilliantly, maybe he could make the step up, yet.

“feels like the club are keen on a UK core, maybe since Brexit“

Based on anything or just having a little re-moan?

Maybe if brexit happened in 2009 when the club stated they wanted 50% of the first team squad made up of academy players.

If anything the club has gone the other way over the last couple of years and is less concerned about British/ Irish players.

25 Jul 2016 17:39:13
Fiip Kostic (the rumoured Mané replacement) has transfered to Hamburg and so won't be joining Southampton.

EC_Saint

{Ed002's Note - He was not of interest.}

1.) 25 Jul 2016 20:28:19
Judging by Redmonds performances so far I think we have mane's replacement already.

30 Jun 2016 14:25:07
Puel is official, along with Eric Black (formerly of Aston Villa) and Pascal Plancque (a talented youth coach) as backroom staff.

Sammy Lee has left but Dave Watson remains with a new contract.

I expect interview videos will be up on Youtube by tomorrow.

1.) 30 Jun 2016 14:32:30
bit excited now as its been dragging since the ginge left!

so my next important question is . as before nickname/ abbreviations of our past two managers (MoPo and Roko) are we going to go along the lines of . CluePoo?

bit sad to see Sammy Lee go.

Hi everyone,

To try and reduce some of the anxiety manifested by the speculation of a change in management, I've compiled a list, purely speculatory as well, of managers that could, potentially, take over from Koeman if he were to leave.

Murat Yakin: linked after Pochettino left, he is known as a master tactician, like Koeman, and had a 47% win percentage. He plays attractive football and has developed young players (Embolo, Sommer, Shaqiri, Xhaka) - he fits our philosphy.

Phillip Cocu: never linked, he's the current PSV manager, he plays good football, develops the youth and has a 66% win percentage, alongside 2 Dutch titles in 2 years. His experience in European competition too could benefit us greatly.

Giovanni Van Bronckhurst: current Feyenoord manager, led the club to 3rd last season and in an attractive manner. He hasn't been managing for very but he has potential to go far. He has won 59% of his matches.

André Villas-Boas: granted that this is the least likely appointment, although nothing is impossible. It was rumoured that he'd move to Schalke 04 this season, but that has gone cold. He won the domestic treble with Zenit St. Petersburg and could be tempted by a Premier League return. He's won 61% of his games in charge.

Remember that these are just ideas, if any of you have positive suggestions then comment below.
Also, win percentages are only a general statistic to go by and will vary hugely depending on the competitiveness of the league, FYI Koeman has a 54.5% win percentage, which sounds better than Yakin's, yet the former hasn't had his stat tarnished by difficult Champion's League fixtures.

Stay positive! X

Eddie Howe too.

2.) 04 Jun 2016 16:03:13
In the spirit of throwing names around- how about that Flores chap that Watford parted ways with?

3.) 04 Jun 2016 16:17:43
I love the look of the PSV manager, I think he would suit us.

4.) 04 Jun 2016 18:52:03
I would've liked unai emrey but he's already got offers from psg n milan.

02 Jan 2016 02:47:43
So, does anyone have a wishlist of players for Southampton to sign?

I would like to see:
Quincy Promes, valued at £7M, winger, 10 goals and 6 assists in 20 games. (23YO)

Oumar Niasse, valued at £3.5M, striker, 13 goals and 10 assists in 23 games. (25YO)

Salomon Kalou, valued at £3M, striker, 12 goals in 19 games. (30YO)

Here I've found 2 players in the Russian league who have the potential to become gems in England and also an ex premier league player in great form.
What do you think? And please suggest players of your own.

EC_Saint

1.) 02 Jan 2016 11:47:40
Haha kalou that will help us straight to championship.

2.) 02 Jan 2016 12:39:51
Actually, dsj20v, Hertha Berlin, Kalou's current team, is in 3rd place in the Bundesliga, that's a Champion's League spot. Please back up your opinion with fact.

Also, another player I forgot to mention is Éder, valued at £10.5M, striker, 11 goals and 3 assists in 17 games this season. He's 29 years old and has been linked with Southampton before. He knows Pellè due to being in the Italian Men's National Team together so this deal transfer has potential.

{Ed002's Note - Quincy Promes has been watched by Manchester United, Newcastle, Dortmund and Southampton over the past year or so. Bayern Munich and Juventus were quoted €32M by Spartak who have become aware of a third party that might have a claim on the player and will need to be paid off.

Lokomotiv Moscow were willing to sell Oumar Niasse in the Summer as he had failed to settle with Galatasaray interested in taking him back to Turkey - but a deal could not be done at the right price. A good start to this season has attracted the attention of Chelsea and Lille.

Kalou won't be moving in January but overall his goals per minute ratio remains very good.}

3.) 02 Jan 2016 13:34:31
The same kalou that was poor in epl when he was last here, and isn't an out and out striker, give me remy on loan till wnd of season then big push on in the summer.

4.) 02 Jan 2016 14:34:22
Thank you, Ed002! I really appreciate your input. Do you have any more information regarding transfers?

{Ed002's Note - These were simply random names - not players Southampton are interested in.}

Agreed with MilkySaint, from reports it seems that Gallagher is close to Blackburn, Austin, McCarthy and Stephens are of interest to Aston Villa, and Carrillo could return to Madrid with Getafe or Legánes.
Boufal still has a holiday to take before returning to the squad but will probably leave shortly.

It seems Clasie, Reed, Hoedt and Cédric will either be reintegrated into the squad or at least reassessed this preseason. I can't see Forster leaving anytime soon.

I expect at least 2 or 3 sales before another comes in.

I agree that the price seems a little steep but he was bought for £22-27M last season and has been very good in the PL. 11 goals and 3 assists for a 19th placed team is excellent. He also sounds a bit more realistic than Augustin.

I agree with much of the above, bar transfer values. From what I have been reading, Boufal and Hoedt could stay at Celta if we were to accept low transfer values. Boufal for.

I feel the same as Figo.

I love football because of its beauty, its drama and the passion it stirs in the stands. I am a fan of Southampton FC (since 2010) because of the kind of football they play and what they stand for.
I love seeing the youth rise up and play with passion and excitement, I love the buzz around the stadium and that feeling of belonging when every fan is behind the team. The fanbase appears splintered; an opportunity to rebuild the club may be exactly what we need. I'd rather watch my side play with passion and joy in the Championship than continue to frustrate fans as they do now. I know that there are flaws in this view - the practical side - but football is a sport of entertainment like any other, and I'd accept relegation if that was the cost.

I appreciate your passion and good will, but you are making some weak points.

This the same BOARD that hired Atkins, Poch and Koeman; the same board that were responsible for favouring slow, sustainable growth rather than copy the QPR formula and for maintaining The Southampton Way - at least at youth level.

Saints FC are incredibly well run and despite my being as disappointed as the next man, I don't believe that they owe us any explanation as to why things aren't going well right now.

The new signings will come good, we won't be relegated (even if not by our own merit - there are at least 3 teams worse than us) and our problems on the pitch have allowed for formerly lesser players to shine, a la Højbjerg, Stephens, McCarthy and I hope Bednarek.

Keep the faith and you'll be repaid sooner rather than later.

I don't think Jaïdi is or ready to manage in the PL, from what I have seen he's been struggling to manage his teams since he came in, but this year he's taken on a better generation - Slattery, Obafemi, Vokins, Ramsay etc. Craig Fleming however seems to have worked well and got a promotion from U18s to U23s assistant, so I'd rate him above anyone.

I would not expect there to be many new signings. I am hoping for a wide player, someone like Jhon Murillo of Benfica, but if you look at every position in the team we have at least 2 capable first team players available.
I doubt that we are looking at another attacker because we have Tadic, Redmond, Boufal and Sims (we need one more in my opinion) but I am sure that the club would like to give Sims as many opportunities as possible. I feel this will be the same reason why we have Stephens as 3rd choice behind VVD and Yoshida, rather than a direct Fonte replacement. Bednarek is in for Caceres.

Where do you believe we need to strengthen?

That's an interesting idea, but international football is very different from club football, Klinsmann for example was fired at Bayern after one season and Philip Lahm said that players often set up the strategy before the game, due to his lack of tactical knowledge.

This was a long time ago when he was just starting as a coach, but he's been criticised heavily since. Jimmy Conrad (former US national team player said that he lacked style, rotated the players far too often (he dropped Oliver Kahn for Jens Lehmann with Germany) and is known for blaming his players, directly, in press conferences.
I believe that his successes have come from the talent at his disposal, Lahm and Donovan led his teams; not him.

I do not know as much about Coleman but I do not feel, having watched Wales at the Euros, that he is really what Southampton are in need of.

I like the look of Marcelo Gallardo of River Plate in Argentina.
