Hey Ed001, just a quick question for you!

With the news that Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request at the Saints, I just want to know what you make of him as a player? I've seen you say you think he makes van Dijk look better than he is at times but just want to know how highly you rate him!

Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - I think he is an excellent defender, more so for what he brings out of the players alongside him than for his own ability. He is one of those who does all the work on the pitch to position himself correctly, using his head to put himself into the right place to steer danger away, rather than making up for poor positioning with last ditch tackles. Shame his head was turned.

Because he uses his head, that is why he has grown as a player and improved, rather than got worse as he has aged. Fonte has been one of the best centre backs in the Prem since Saints returned, it will be a big loss for them to lose him. He controls the whole defence, constantly talking to his team mates. That is very important, as very few defenders think these days, they are all too busy trying to be ball players and forget about defending. Having him there alongside rash players, such as Lovren in his time, calms the whole team down, as he is a calming influence.

He is a captain, a proper leader. It is hard to define those qualities, as they do not really show on the pitch easily, it is easier to see them when the player is missing. I fear for Southampton without him. They will need to replace him well, as no team can continue to lose their better players forever and keep making progress, eventually it catches up to you.}

What an excellent reply Ed. With regards to having his head turned. sadly I am not sure he had any choice. It is disappointing, sad, crazy, to see what Southampton have built up over many years, being thrown away buy a guy that clearly just doesn't 'get' the Premiership. Jose for Manager!

{Ed001's Note - thanks, still a shame though, he is an ideal player to have when you need youngsters guided through matches.}

I totally agree with ED's.

He's been an unsung hero for the Saints and Portugal. If you look at Portugal's defensive record with him at the Euro's it was immense. Ultimately a reason they won the tournament. Same with Southampton. Maybe the rotation has pushed him out. Maybe he thinks Puel doubts his quality and fitness because of his age. It doesn't make sense because with him and VVD we are almost certain to not concede.

I genuinely think that Fonte will be irreplaceable for us.

Hi Ed, can you explain in equally well written words, why you think Southampton is allowing everything we have strived to achieve, be thrown away so quickly. Our whole playing style, outlook, teamwork, team ethic ., all gone. Making six changes two games running, playing for a 0-0 draw in the last European game, players form disregarded, negative football .
It took us so long to get where we were and no time to lose it.
And while some say we are not much worse off than last season, the football is awful, predictable, lethargic .
I could go on and on . Puel just does not get the Premieriship.

{Ed001's Note - I think you have hit the nail on the head, Puel does not understand the Prem. It is a learning curve for him, with a lot more pressure than he had before. He might just not be suited to the English game or he could need time to adapt and learn. Trouble is that I am not sure Southampton can afford to give him too much time, as they will face losing too many players in the summer.}

Cheers for the reply Ed, brilliant points made! And I agree with you! One thing I would say is that Alderweireld has arguably got even better since leaving Southampton and therefore not being alongside Fonte. That's probably more down to him learning the Premier League and building experience though!

{Ed001's Note - system they play helps a lot as well. They have two players sat in front protecting the centre backs.}
