Shane Long set to leave Hull after just 6 months on Humberside. Homesick apparently - all his family are down south.
Signing for a southern premiership club.
Us??

This may cause a bit of effing and jeffing from my fellow saints fans but why have we not gone for Christian Benteke? We need a replacement for Pelle and this guy is the perfect fit. The way we play would suit him down to the ground. Charlie is a poacher, Jay relies on pace and Shane Long is a complete pain in the arse for premier league defenders but none of them are target men that can bully centre backs the way Pelle did. Benteke can do this and do this well. OK, you can all stop swearing now!

I'll agree mate posted same 2 days ago, could've got better deal in the Mane transfer.

2.) 26 Jul 2016 23:27:18
He would suit us well, problem is we'd never pay the amount they want and we could probably get a player just as good for less.

I asked the EDS a few days ago they said we havn't shown interest but it would be against "the Southampton way" to reinvest a decent amount of money so get ready for us to sign bas dost for 6 million : (

{Ed001's Note - I wish you would take him off us!}

Long will become a fans favourite. Just wait and see. £12 million I admit is a bit steep, but when other clubs know you have money to spend, then bang, up goes the price - that's football. Hull are doing exactly what we did to Liverpool. As much as I rate Adam Lallana, no way is he worth £25 million - not even close. Hull are just getting the best deal they can for their club and I personally admire it. But many of you seem to be saying " We could have Rojo for that". Ummm, no we couldn't. We bid a reported £16 million for him which got rejected. Les Reed didn't want to pay over the odds for a player who could turn out to be another Lovren, who holds the club to ransom just like he is doing to Sporting Lisbon. We don't want players like that at our club - welll I don't anyway. If Reed thought we were paying way over the odds for Long, then I'm sure we wouldn't be signing him. Koeman must really rate him. Shame some of you don't.

P. s - Hope my grammar was OK in this post ALSOTONLE :-)

Les Reed has to go?? Never heard so much rubbish in all my life. For those of you who haven't got a clue, which unfortunately seems to be quite a few, do you really think Les Reed sits in his office and says " Right, I'm going to buy him and him and if big Ron doesn't like it, he can do one back to Holland". Wake up - he consults with Koeman over every transfer the club does and if Koeman doesn't rate a player, we don't buy him. All Reed does is negotiate the deal. Sometimes I wonder about some of my fellow Saints fans. If brains was gun powder, half of you wouldn't have enough to blow your little toe off!!!!!!

I personally don't think a new goalkeeper is our main priority. I think Boruc is an outstanding keeper and doesn't need replacing. I'm getting a bit concerned by the seemingly lack of talk about a centre back. The three we have at the club are at best adequate but far from outstanding. £10 million on Fraser Forster seems an awful lot of money which should be better spent on a top notch defender.

Message to the board:
For crying out loud, please sign someone this week. Most of the fans on this forum want your heads on a platter. They are all scared you are asset stripping. They are very scared and are beginning to lash out. I for one have complete faith in you whereas a majority on here are wetting their knickers, afraid we aren't going to sign anyone. Please give them some good news.
Thanks :-)

I think we need both to be honest mate. Our play is based on our full backs bombing on and getting crosses in the box. We need someone in the mould of Pelle or Lambert to get on the end of those crosses and currently we have no one capable of bullying centre halves as the two I mentioned. I think Florin Gardos is capable of being a good centre back if he didn't think he was Franz bloody Beckenbaur but if i'm honest I don't know how close he is to being fit. But another one wouldn't go amiss as Yoshida is clearly not good enough for the prem and Stephens isn't quite ready just yet.

Thanks for responding Gary. Cashing in as you call it, is how the board work. I wouldn't really call it that but if that's peoples opinion of our club, then so be it. If you had gone into administration before Mr. Kenwright saved you from doing so, then maybe you would have a better understanding of why the club do it this way. These were dark days for our club and not days we want repeated ever again. We were a gnats cock away from going out of business completely. When Marcus Liebherr saved us and I mean save us, his plan was to make the club self sufficient while still being a force to be reckoned with on the field. His plan is bearing fruit. Many Saints fans may disagree with me, but in hindsight, and what a wonderful thing that is by the way, going into administration was quite possibly the best thing that ever happened to us. We rebuilt the club from top to bottom.
Your argument about us having no ambition doesn't stack up when we have just qualified for Europe two seasons on the bounce - don't understand where you're coming from. You can stand from the rooftops and scream about us having no ambition all you want, but why do you think the big clubs want to buy our players all the time? I'll tell you shall I! Because they're bloody good players and they play in a bloody good team. That's why. All the players we bought in have been sold for a profit but not really many of them have really thrived at other clubs. Can't believe you got £47 million for Stones by the way - you're in serious danger of being sued by City under the trade descriptions act or putting in plain English selling dodgy goods :-) I like Everton, always have even though you broke my heart in the 1984 FA cup semi - bastards :-) but it seems to me you have no plan. You may have all that money to spend but if you have no plan it's pointless having it because footballers are mercenaries and are the most selfish creatures on the planet. If for example you get relegated, which you won't obviously, and you have players on obscene wages, do you think they give a sh*t about Everton football club - no they do not. They'll be looking for the door mate and their next big contract. We know because we've been there! So maybe you'll understand why we air on the side of caution or maybe you still won't. I don't care whether you do or don't but just pray what happened to us never happens to Everton.

Cheers for your post mate. Koeman left because our board asked him to sign a contract extension going in to the last year of his contract - which personally I don't find unreasonable. For some reason, Koeman got the hump about this and decided to go to Everton. Everton doubled his wages and no one in their right mind would turn that down. I can't speak for other Saints fans, and I haven't got an issue with leaving for 6 million a year but don't lie about. Him coming out in the media telling all and sundry he's staying at St Marys and then within 3 wees he's at Goodison is what pis*ed me off. I can't quite see your point when we finished 8th, 7th and then 6th is our board just happy to stay in the premier league. That means we are progressing in my book. I don't know anyone who thinks we are bigger than Everton, but I do think your being a bit harsh on Bill Kenwright who stepped in and saved your ass. Has he or has he not been looking for investment ever since he walked in the place? Now you have this billionaire sugar daddy you think everything will be like it was in the 80's. Saints have a strategic plan that involves picking up players for pittance and sellings them for obscene amounts, mostly to your mates across Stanley park :-) . But all being told, that's our plan and at the moment it seems to be working. Seems to me, the only plan Everton have is to throw money at the problem. Well that doesn't always work does it. Ask Louis van Gal. I personally think you'll have a good season because you have a good manager but unless you support Southampton, I really wouldn't expect you to understand how are board operate. It can be frustrating when you see top players get sold but it's been happening for a while now and we still up improve season on season, punching above our weight. Guess time will tell if we can continue to do so.

Agree completely. If he stayed with us for another year and he honoured that year, then he was set up for the Arsenal job next season. Now he has taken the Everton job, that probability is now a major doubt unless Arsenal are willing to buy him out of this massive contract that he is supposedly due to sign any day now. I believe this to be highly unlikely as the Arsenal board aren't exactly renowned for throwing their money away willy nilly.
That leads me to the only conclusion I can think of logically - and that is he's lining his pockets but gambling with his reputation as a good manager in the process.
Anyway Ron - thanks for the memories. See ya!
