Clasie has been left out of the feyanoord squad for preseason due to 'serious interest' and transfer talks. Saints are being named as the likely club to get him. Anyone know any more about this? Would be a great signing

StirlingSaint

1.) 12 Jul 2015 12:39:03
Would be a very good signing.

Very similar player to Schneiderlin in terms of passing ability, hard tackling and how hard he works. Hopefully he's one of the ones Fonte alluded to the other day

2.) 12 Jul 2015 15:12:39
Lazio and napoli also interested in him. Fingers crossed could be a great signing and hopefully perk up some of the doubters on here!

3.) 13 Jul 2015 16:54:58
who else has Fonte alluded to Saintysaintsaint?

28 Jun 2015 12:57:49
If we sell Schniederlin for £25 million and get two of clasie, imbula or gueye, and still make a profit, that'd be incredible business!

StirlingSaint

1.) 28 Jun 2015 16:04:37
Imbula and Clasie, yes please. Gueye looks a bit of a cheap "that'll have to do" signing to me, compared to the other two names, who are high quality.

2.) 28 Jun 2015 21:26:08
Idrisssa Gana Gueye is actually a very classy player, he's been consistent and highly important to Lille last season. His only weakness is defensive positioning since he can run up the field with attackers and not get back. However, he'd be a very smart signing so don't slate him.

I've heard we're maybe going to get Diego capel for £5m. Not heard much about him before, what's he like? Is he any good?

StirlingSaint

1.) The rumour is loan with a option to buy at £5mill. he is decent and loan to buy is very low risk if he doesn't work out

2.) He was a hot prospect at one point I believe. on Barca's books. I hear he's a great talent, pretty skillfull and pacey. just needs someone to relight his fire. Ron could be theman to do it

3.) Diego Capel is awful. Think Stuart Downing but worse. 25 games for sporting last season zero assists. One goal. Two games so far this season no positive contribution made.

Been away for the last 3 weeks with no wifi so haven't been able to follow the preseason. How well did saints play in the Dutch games and against espanyol and did any players stand out?

StirlingSaint

1.) 05 Aug 2015 16:26:58
There's been a few players who've looked very good.

The team was a little disappointing in the 45 min friendlies in Austria but they'd only played one game before then. In the Dutch friendlies and the Europa cup game though we were different class. Dutch teams aren't bad, especially feyenoord and Vitesse but apart from a few small patches the team completely bossed those games

Didn't see the espanyol game so I'll leave that for someone else

Anyway, about the players
Gazzaniga looked good against Groningen (I think it was that game he played).
Soares has stood out all pre season, looks better than Clyne already.
Tadic looks like he's back to the player he was before Xmas.
J-Rod's severely lacking fitness but still banging them in, looks promising for when he's fully fit.
Wanyama has been bossing games.
Stekelenburg hasn't needed to do much but pulled out a game changing save vs Vitesse.
Mane looks like he's starting this season like he finished last.

There's been no real surprises, no ones turned into Messi over the summer but the team looks as good as ever

2.) 05 Aug 2015 17:18:52
I went to the Espanyol game, Koeman wasn't too impressed by the overall performance judging by his post-match interview.

But as for the match from a fan's point of view, it probably represented the most typical of pre-season friendlies you can get. Neither team went for the others jugular, although a few Espanyol players were a bit rugged with their tackling. I remember Mane getting chopped down by Hector Moreno, a poor challenge but the type you see every week in the league.

Not really the type of match you can judge any player's performance on, but aside from the usual starters Caulker seemed steady enough in his first game, Juanmi showed his attacking intent, and Jay Rod scored a wonderful goal to mark his return at St Marys.

3.) 05 Aug 2015 17:26:25
Espanyol game was a bit of a damp squib. Nobody wanted to over exert themselves or risk getting an injury. Harrison Reed was probably the best player on the day and Yosh did well when he came on. Caulker had a decent game on his first game for Saints and JRod scored a cracker.

Does Swansea losing mean that if Arsenal win the FA cup saints will qualify for Europa regardless of results next weekend?

StirlingSaint

1.) 17 May 2015 19:23:26
Yes. But they'll have to play a qualifying round.

Beat City (a draw might be enough) and finish in the top six, and Saints could go straight into the Europa League group stage - and not have to worry about the FA Cup final result.

2.) 17 May 2015 19:34:44
Yes, however the balls still entirely in our court as to who Arsenal may be providing a Europa spot for. If we win and Liverpool and/or Tottenham don't we will move above both/or one of them and be guaranteed a shot at the Europa League next season. So let's hope the boys really give it their best shot next weekend and round off our best Premier League season to date.

3.) 17 May 2015 20:10:21
If we beat Man city and both Liverpool and Spurs lose we will finish in 5th. I know the odds on all 3 results going our way are long but strange things happen at the end of a long hard season. I'd love to finish above the teams that took our manager and almost half our players last year.

4.) 17 May 2015 21:22:59
Just following up on what qwertyell said - if we do grab sixth, then we'll still be cheering arsenal on against villa. If Villa win the FA cup, they'll go straight to the group stage, and 6th place will have to go through play offs.

5.) 18 May 2015 00:30:53
6th place is still qualifying rounds regardless, only 5th is group stage

6.) 18 May 2015 01:45:09
No, I'm pretty sure that if arsenal win the cup, 6th place is group stage entry

7.) 18 May 2015 06:13:32
Actually it's a win and two draws that will get us 5th because of our goal difference I think.

8.) 18 May 2015 17:04:14
Yes, Frenchie is right, 6th only becomes a direct passage to the group stage if Arsenal win the cup.

So it looks like we're all going to have to become Arsenal fans for the day, one way or the other.

Winning at City is going to be tough, but it means Liverpool and Spurs MUST also win to hold onto to their places, due to Saints' huge goal difference advantage.

16 May 2015 13:14:01
I think our problem at the moment is that we don't score enough goals.

StirlingSaint

{Ed001's Note - I was just wondering how on earth Villa have done so well in recent matches, but it must be said Saints have looked a really good side.}

1.) 16 May 2015 13:23:04
That will shut qwertyell up

{Ed001's Note - what a goal Long.}

I've seen that we've apparently enquired about martins Indi and Quintero. Does anyone know of there's much truth in this? And how good are these 2?

StirlingSaint

1.) I doubt there's much in either rumour. Koeman said if they're going to bring anyone in during the January window it'll be an attacker. Martins Indi is a centre back. Saints have four senior centre backs, young Jason McCarthy, and two more, Stephens and Turnbull, out on loan. I think they're covered.

If Alderweireld doesn't sign in the summer, perhaps Martins Indi will become an option.

Quintero is a number 10. Again, I'm not sure that's a position the side is desperate to fill, with Tadic, Mane and Elia in the squad. Striker seems like the major area they're short of options in. Quintero is no striker.

He's a talented little playmaker, though. One for the future. Quite lightweight - I think he'd take some time to adapt to English football and the rumoured six month loan is probably a bit pointless in that respect.

Finally got to see my first Saints game yesterday and it's safe to say, I really enjoyed myself. The game was good, especially the first half, but a bit scrappy and nervous towards the end. It was great to be in a packed stadium and the atmosphere was great. I've seen my fair share of sports live (I'm an avid rugby fan) but I haven't been part of such an energetic, loud crowd before. I'm hoping to get to many more games this season now, as I just loved being there, part of that crowd, cheering my team to victory. Also I just wanted to say, second in the table!!! Pretty good for a team in a meltdown ;)

Also, with Forster, you got to remember he's only been playing in the premier, or against premier league opponents, for a couple of months now. It's a different standard down here to in the SPL. He probably just needs a little time to adjust and get out any flaws he has in training, at least he's got the stuff that you can't train into people, size and reflexes. Also he has kept the most clean sheets and has the best shot to save ration in the EPL so he can't be doing that much wrong.

I'd like to comment on the money issue as well. I'm going to see my first Saints game this weekend, and although I'm very excited I think it's ridiculous to charge fans £30+ to see their club play. Also as I live on the Isle of wight, the port and expensive travel links add to this cost and make it harder to afford and get to a match. I would very much like to go to more matches but simply can't afford it. I feel if the club lowered the prices a bit for the smaller games they will get more supporters in and probably just about the same amount of money from it. I don't think that they realise that £10 less for tickets will make a big difference for fans but not so much of a difference for the club. This'll help supporters support their club and fill the stadium. But anyway, I'm still really looking forward to my first saints match this weekend! COYR

Did you really expect the club to spend a lot more than they have? The players that cost a lot 1) wouldn't come to us and would prefer a move to a bigger side and 2) we can't afford their wages. We've still spent a lot of money, and still got more deals in process, also we have money to pay off debts and seal a good future where we have money. It's not about cashing in, it's about not needing to spend a lot more than we have done. Our team is still good, and once they gel, with Koeman managing, I reckon we will be a top 10 team again. Just have patience and see what happens, you can't judge a season on the first two games, just as you can't judge a new player on there first two games. COYR

Just seen this on the metro website, it says he's only £6 million as well! He would be a great signing, solid and can provide cover at right back as well. He's definitely the one of the types of player we need right now

After recent articles by the BBC about Southampton, I don't really believe in the stuff they're saying anymore.

I think we should just keep Rodriguez as he's a good player and has shown that he's a good player who works well at Southampton. I don't think that Townsend is a good player at all and he probably won't wven make it into our first squad. I don't know enough about mason to comment, but we probably don't need any more midfielders, but I reckon Kane would be a good buy as a back up striker. He's a good, young, physical player who'll provide more squad depth. We have the money to get him though without having to trade Rodriguez, so we could still keep Rodriguez and get him too.

Saint Dez, from what I've heard the bonuses promised were not in their contracts, they were promised these by Cortese, and it wasn't his money to give. The bonuses weren't approved by Liebherr who thought he was spending and promising away to much of her money, hence the falling out and him resigning.

I guess so. The media just want a good story and what better a story than a club being ripped apart. They don't deal in truth they just want the best story. They write what people want to hear and I presume there are more people out there wanting to hear that spider wants to go than not. I've seen an article in the mirror saying clyne, fonte and cork have all handed in transfer requests, and that I don't believe for a second. Especially after fonte's Instagram earlier, he seemed pretty happy there and moral seemed high
