Manchester United are to put in a shock bid for Sadio Mane as they are going to miss out on Pedro to Chelsea. On the Newsnow website

A lot on the news about this. Mane is one of the most talented players I've ever seen at Saints. Hugely important for the club. Lose him, and we will struggle in every aspect this season. He is truly irreplaceable as he is a unique payer. To sell him, for whatever amount, will be suicide.

2.) 19 Aug 2015 16:29:30
A frustrating thing to hear, but I believe nothing will materialise from this. If they were to make a bid, they'd be having to put forward a figure greater than what they could of done for Pedro, to even get Les Reed's attention. He's got a three year contract and we have zero reason to sell him.

Interesting that this was only released after Koeman's press conference, otherwise he probably would of iterated in the same vein as the Fonte to Villa speculation, 'no way'.

3.) 19 Aug 2015 16:37:56
van gaal buying anyone with 2 legs there will be a lot of players at Manchester United this season who won't get a game

4.) 19 Aug 2015 16:21:47
Sensationalist Drivel not a chance

5.) 19 Aug 2015 16:50:16
HI
If saints sell mane to Manchester United it would smack of assett stripping, as mane has not indicated he wanted to leave and is our most influential player at the momment, and I can't believe RK could or would possibly sanction this deal.

6.) 19 Aug 2015 16:54:48
If it goes throught which I think is very unlikely, perhaps it could tie in with a swap deal for januzaj? As the club have said they are prepared to loan him out. Still think this won't happen no matter what the bid is, but after the last 2 summers you never know.

7.) 19 Aug 2015 17:25:27
Mane IS keen on the move as he has been told by his agent of the enquiry. I bet he pushes for it if not this season then defo next.

8.) 19 Aug 2015 17:56:39
You are all probably right about Mane but have you considered he might want to go to United and would make it awkward for us . He has only been with us 5 minutes so I don't think an allegiance exists between him and us . A bit worrying all this if true , wonder whether Morgan might have influence in this , hope not but not out of the question .

9.) 19 Aug 2015 18:34:05
This story is also being reported on BBC sport, so there is some credibility to it. I'm just wondering what psychological impact this will have on Mane.

Agree with other posters, I don't want to see Mane leave, great talent

10.) 19 Aug 2015 19:03:57
which newspaper suggested mane was keen on the move? Yes, the bid is official but I think mane being keen on the deal is a lie made up just to add a twist in the tale

11.) 19 Aug 2015 19:14:47
He has a £21.5M release clause

12.) 19 Aug 2015 19:04:48
"Tomorrow there will be an invasion of nymphomaniac female aliens within the Southampton area. Just buy our papers/ watch our programmes to get full information." No facts, so rumours, no rumours so speculation, no speculation so fabrication-doesn't matter it will still be lapped up!

And now if it is reported on BBC sport it has some credibility! Is this the same BBC whose reporter started off the evening for the last election in a red dress but had changed to a blue one by the morning? (It really happened.)

I see the media were also reporting today the big risks of fracking because the drills go down through the aquifers and our water will be polluted as a result! Erm, where did the 100s of drills go during the last 50 years for exploration for on shore gas and oil in the UK? A few of them very close to Southampton and my tap water is OK but as the Times had such "statement" there is some credibility?

13.) 19 Aug 2015 19:24:13
Eds, do you know if this release clause fee is correct? Guys, if the answer is yes, being a realist I think it extremely likely to happen.

{Ed001's Note - release clauses are not really relevant in England mate. They are not legally enforcable as Suarez found out when he tried to force a move to Arsenal a couple of seasons ago. As for Mane, United did enquire when they bought Schneiderlin but were told he is not for sale and that, as far as I am aware, was that. I would only see anything being revived if he has made it known to United that he wants the move to go through.}

14.) 19 Aug 2015 19:57:50
Guys, of course everyone wants mane to stay and I know we would not entertain an offer from UTD unless it was stupid stupid money or infact if the player himself gets his head turned by the news that UTD want him.

Then it could be hard to keep hold of him, I do remember mane's agent saying he will be better than Messi in a few years so I could see his agent using us as a stepping stone to a bigger club.

Also it makes sense with the resurfacing rumours about redmond. Anyway I hope this will blow over and mane goes on to have a super season with the saints. COYR!!

15.) 19 Aug 2015 20:09:09
the bid is not official. an enquiry is.

16.) 19 Aug 2015 20:36:30
If Mane wants to go, he'll go. He kicked up a fuss at Salzburg when Saints came after him to force through the move. He knows what to do.

That's probably why United are leaking this to the media, to put the ball in his court.

He'd be a disastrous loss. He's the only high quality attacking player they've got.

Five first teamers sold last summer, could be another four lost this summer. Ridiculous.

17.) 19 Aug 2015 22:30:00
You mean like Morgan this time last summer? Never one for consistency are you-apart from frequently referring to the club as they and not we. I still have problems with your logic, and point of interest.

Leaking stuff about Pedro worked well, didn't it!

18.) 19 Aug 2015 23:00:29
Anyone have any idea of the kind of fee we'd be talking about? Selling our best asset to a club that's on a buying spree. Needs to be big money.

19.) 20 Aug 2015 08:02:26
When they bought Spider they asked Les whether we'd sell Mane. Les said 'no' and that is as far as it went until they told the press that they had enquired, probably to save face on the Pedro deal.

Liverpool have had a 10 million offer rejected for Clyne. Funniest thing I have heard all year. What are they smoking over there at Anfield?

Edd's; like me does the evidence point to Clyne signing for the saints again? Les Reed has said in the public domain he suspects Clyne will sign and Clyne himself has ditched his agent for a new one and talks are now progressing swiftly? combined with Clyne himself saying some interesting things to sky?

saint_ben_basingtoke

{Ed002's Note - The situation is that Southampton don't want to sell, have made him and offer and are awaiting a response. That's it.}

1.) 29 May 2015 10:21:05
I don't think he'll sign, not now he knows there are bids albeit very low one for him. He's put himself in the shop window for stalling on signing a new contract and is attracting the interest of others - I would however love to be proven wrong

2.) 29 May 2015 13:07:34
Fair enough Edd, admittedly i'm going on assumptions but I would think it strange if Clyne did move on that Les Reed went public to say negotiations are going well and it looks like he will sign a new contract, that coupled up with the fact that Clyne sacked his agent who defiantly wanted him to move on. But we will see.

{Ed002's Note - It is where things are right now.}

So there have been rumours that Sam Gallagher is wanted by up to as many as 8 championship clubs and mayuka could be off to Spartak Moscow! So answer's on a postcard please, do we need another out and out striker to help Pelle??

And please people don't say jay Rod, juanmi, long, . and all our other attacking players that will sit behind Pelle, I know they could do a job as replacing Pelle if need be but does any one else not think an out and out striker would be extremely helpful for the whole squad?

Charlie Austin would be my preferred choice if it was to happen. Himself he knows he cannot play every single game and I think the same could be said for Pelle, rotation of these 2 players could work well? and we certainly will have enough games this season to keep everyone happy! thoughts?

1.) 27 Jul 2015 11:10:59
Well Koeman didn't buy anyone last year as a Pelle clone and he didn't have Gallagher or Jay Rod available. I know we all thought Jay would be back in January, but that must have become clear to the club that he wouldn't, leaving them time in the January window to have a look - but we seemed to go for wingers. For us fans, it would be good to buy a striker, but I doubt Charlie Austin would come as he wouldn't be guaranteed a start due to Pelle. So to answer your question SBB - haven't a clue!

2.) 27 Jul 2015 11:52:20
Yes, Charlie Austin would be a great signing but it just seems very unlikely to happen. With other priorities in the squad, and Koeman's favouring of Pelle, I can't see us making this outlay for what will be considered back-up. There's a slim possibility we may look in January but otherwise I think we will be waiting until next summer for a new striker.

3.) 27 Jul 2015 11:56:33
Nearly sure we would all like Austin or similar but I'm even more sure we won't be signing him or a likewise player.

4.) 27 Jul 2015 12:06:17
I still think j-rod will deputise for pelle as well as filling one of the wide roles, if Gallagher does go on loan then I think they'll promote seager as the understudy youth player. I just can't see us spending the sort of money qpr want on Austin when he won't be first choice. And I don't know of any other strikers that are good enough for our budget. At least one, possibly 2 centre backs have to be the priority now. I will probably get a lot of disagrees on here, but I think j-rod will end up being centre forward as his career progresses and we'll start to see more of that this year

5.) 27 Jul 2015 12:28:25
Why would we pay 12-15m plus huge wages for a bit part player? Injury prone and over rated. Nek Ple.

6.) 27 Jul 2015 13:54:54
I think the policy we are trying to follow is to improve in positions when buying, not just add to squad numbers.
If (and there is certainly one signing this year that doesn't fit that category) that's true then the question is, Is Austin better than Pelle? In my mind no
I'd rather strike a deal to take Dzeko on loan for a year or look to buy him. (Wages being the stumbling block sadly)

7.) 27 Jul 2015 16:22:47
Even with them going we're still 2 strikers up on last season, no need to get another in

He may well of said that but as the club (Les Reed) has also said that if there is a special deal to be had then we are in a position financially to do it

Thry may talk to us about him but that's all it is. We will not entertain any sale of Fonte our club captain

ponykeeper83: ridiculous, there is no way on earth we are selling prowse! he has not long signed a new contract and I know that does not mean a lot nowadays but that is just nonsense to think we would sell or he would leave

johnnewton: I also personally think we need another target man / striker and would love to have Charlie Austin although I'am realistic. With regards to clasie I don't see us signing another defensive mid as we have Reed, but defiantly need a top central defender to replace Toby.

I did like Fonte's interview after the game, he said about new signings and then had a massive grin on his face as if he really wanted to say we have an amazing signing coming! did anyone else notice?

Problem is neither as anywhere near the same level as Toby! I can't see these happening.
