Can I just say, when we were linked with Hojbjerg and Boufal at the start of the transfer window I thought to myself that if we landed these two it'd be well and truly the best window I've seen being a saints fan for the last few years. I could barely believe when Hojbjerg signed and now actually signing Boufal has me really pleased. It really shows how much respect we now have from players around Europe and it's a credit to everyone who is and has been involved with the club.

Now to unfortunately change the tone of this comment. I posted this on an ugly inside video after the Sunderland game, talking about our set up, and I think it bears repeating.

'Unfortunately I think that was the game that proved to me finally that the system doesn't work for us. Sunderland, like every other team we played so far, were being out possessed and harried for the first 15 minutes or so until they realized to use their full backs.
The whole game Sunderland had easy out balls to their fullbacks and once they got the ball they never had any pressure on them. They could take it forward with ease. This guy wonders why Redmond wasn't always pressing. It's because there weren't any wingers helping with the press. Puel has tried to counter that issue by pushing the 10 to the top of the press and the strikers out wide. But the problems with that are that the two wide players are too narrow and high up the pitch and they don't track back with their opp wingbacks because, well, they are strikers. This isn't even mentioning our attack without wingers which is making the job of the midfield and strikers very difficult.
I'm never the one to come out and say something like this after only 3 games, but it's clearly not working, not due lack of experience with it, but because it's a flawed system. '

Sorry about the length of this post, but I needed to get it off my chest. What do you guys think?

Then again I could be being harsh on the system considering how many shots we've had.

2.) 29 Aug 2016 13:54:35
And considering the success he's had in France using the formation. I know it's a different league etc etc but it's still football and he's a very experienced coach. Let's see where we are at Christmas before we all start shouting for his head.

3.) 29 Aug 2016 14:40:55
You're spot on. By no means am I raising issues with Puel as a manager. Just with the system.

4.) 29 Aug 2016 16:30:12
I'll agree the system isn't clicking as well as it should be but we need to remember that it's a new system that's very dependent on strong wing backs whilst we're still missing Bertrand and Cedric only had about 45 mins of preseason to adapt to it. I think it'll only be fair to judge once we're at full strength and everyone knows the system better (including Austin/ Long/ Redmond learning how to work together as a partnership) .

5.) 29 Aug 2016 20:20:25
Surely the system is the manager, if you criticize the system de facto you criticize the manage. From what we have so far been served up with the tactical model is fatally flawed.

In my opinion we are quality possesion on passing around, at the back, for the the sake of passing. By the time we reach offensive positions we are met by adequately prepared defences. Instead we should be passing swiftly through the opposition (like last season) and delivering the incisive final pass through stretched defences. (like last season)

I just hope Puel is prepared to adapt his tactics to suit the strength of his playing resources rather than persist with imposing a system that exposes thier weaknesses.

I am red and White all the way, I would just rather be smiling a lot more Saturday afternoons (well more Sundays for a while)

6.) 30 Aug 2016 00:56:27
Just a quick one Abby, you can't take Pelle and Mane out of our side and play last seasons system . They were that system.

7.) 30 Aug 2016 12:49:51
Granted Chris We no longer have Mane and Pelle I would just like to see swifter build play to see if they can be replaced in the context of last seasons style with what we have available.
With the slow build up play currently being employed I do not think it is giving their replacements a decent opportunity to show what they could do.

Why is everyone so keen for us to sign Bas Dost?

We already have two very injury prone strikers. Why would we want a third of the same ilk?

semaj97

1.) 17 Aug 2016 17:17:39
Don't get how the club are going to sign a new striker.

We have 4 all to the same ability (including Redmond) . So surely by signing a new one to cover injuries, we'd be asking them to sit fifth in the pecking order.

Surely its essentially another Jaumni?

I'd rather just see youth players cover injuries.

Sorry to be negative, but this is something that's bothered me for a while.

Am I the only one who finds Koeman's favouritism of players frustrating? It's been happening since he arrived, so it's not just a few coincidence circumstances that I'm over thinking.

Pelle's been bang out of form and when our only quick attacker goes down why on earth is pelle rather than mane (who is a big game player) brought on? It especially frustrates me considering how much more hunger other players play with over pelle.

Victor Wanyama seems to be played whenever possible, in any circumstance. And Remeu has proved to pocess more quality and care than victor in most of his games. Don't get me started on Yoshida.

Koeman's a very collected manager with good man motivation and i'm glad we have him. but Someone who has faults and doesn't try to rectify them over time I find hard to have much love for as a fan.

semaj97

1.) 28 Feb 2016 03:46:25
Partially agree with you. I couldn't understand why Pelle was brought on when our most mobile and quick attacker went off.
However. Isn't the fact that he dropped Pelle in place of Austin in the first place a sign of him trying to rectify the problem? I'm sorry but koeman just doesn't struck me as a person who would favour a player over another.

2.) 28 Feb 2016 04:38:02
He did bring Austin in, buts that's been something that clearly should have happened in the previous two weeks as well. I'm not saying that he's completely stubborn when it comes to certain players, that he'll never take pelle out, but favouritism still plays far too big a part if his decision making.

3.) 29 Feb 2016 07:35:44
He said before, after pelles injury, that he needs game time to get confidence and form back. I expect he already had those substitutes in his mind before the injury.
I'm sure if pelle had scored it would be a different post.

4.) 29 Feb 2016 12:27:28
Sorry I don't agree at all with the original post. No Mane, Tadic or Pelle is the starting line up. They were "favourites" for sure. Targett and Long were definitely not in his thinking (only early season for Targett when Betrand wasn't fit)

5.) 29 Feb 2016 22:50:33
Ronald has said that he has spoken with Pelle and told him not to do all those flicks as he needs to hold it up and bring other players in. RK also admitted that it was a bad substitution on Saturday.

Why is everyone neglecting to talk tactics?

our attack and especially our transitions to attack are poorly structured. of our front 3, tadic was coming deep to help defend so he was always out of the picture in transitions, pelle came deep into midfield to collect the ball and mane was up with literally no one else near him other than at least three spurs defenders. This was not only happening at the start of the match but even moreso when we went behind. it doesn't make any sense to me.

Yes we should buy more players but our current first eleven is capable of scoring goals.

semaj97

1.) 20 Dec 2015 15:57:50
Where our defensive unit is weak so our attacking players don't have the faith that our boys at the back will be able to stop attacks so are sitting deeper to stop the overlapping wing play and mane was up on his own to try counter attack on his own at pace
Mane shoulda scored 2 before Kane scored but this shows wot keoman is saying we're not finishing opportunity and we are poor at defending wanyama, fonte, van dijk, cedric, and Bertrand where off there game 100 percent .
And I read a artical somewhere that keoman only did well last year due to pochentino leave a good squad
Wot squad lambert, lallana, shaw, chambers, lovern left when the board refused to back cortese followed again by our two stand out players being sold again schniederlin and Clyne. then les tryin to get Toby for peanuts made us lose out on him to and Elia wasn't worth 3mil apparently . osvaldo contract terminated and Ramirez didn't never have a chance to settle with all teammates that left and three managers, then forren sent back where he come from and gardos is not up to this level neither is cuco and the list does not.
So in truth if keoman was not here we would be in a bigger mess because pelle. tadic and mane would not be hear . keoman has had to start from sratch while poch had a good young squad that has played through hard time to get where they where and not to meation the hard work Adkins put in to make them a team and family and bring them to two back to back promotions
Only for kath to take control and sell our team and replace with strangers and keoman done a excellent job getting them to mould so quickly (saved us)
And to get to the start of the season still needing a good cb till van dijk finally turned up and why in two seasons has a striker not been brought
Because les and kath will not spend the money required to bring in the level of striker needed so a champions league spot when't begging and just look at Leicester they didn't sell there team and are flying as a reward and massive resect to there owners
That is something southampton fc had in Marcus and cortese
Something that made most football pundits envious of cortese and they got rid and our sell out supporters turns there back on cortese for makeing us have a state of the art training facilty buy saying he got us in debt lol
There ain't a team in prem that isn't in debt
Nor a country that is running that don't have debt
So why do our fans believe this rubbish les and kath come out sayin just look a the cedric deal we're running a debt on him because we never payed up all cash for him and will be paying for next few years a million this year then next, same clasie so when they say we invested all money from transfers back into the team how we sell for good money but pay cheap fees and cheap wages in return
This is wot keoman was saying in the echo not more than a week ago "we are the only team to have made a profit in the transfer window (again) and we need more when u look at the teams around us growing and getting stronger year in year out. and our last two seasons have been sell sell sell but we got a good price and we bought him for this at a bargin . problem is squad is a bit thin now so we can't sell to rip a profit again .
TV and sponsor deals have made a big impact to all in the prem apart from southampton fc because our fan base and stadium are so much smaller then every premier league club we still can't afford top players or even Austin .

2.) 23 Dec 2015 23:01:06
All 3 have always come deep, even last season.

3.) 23 Dec 2015 23:52:08
Times last season and this we were practically playing 4-2-4.

13 Sep 2015 06:44:11
If Pelle could pass the ball to players along the ground, that'd be great. Also if we could stop trying to play Davis as the creative spark in attack, that'd also be great. We look VERY similar to the back end of last season. Which is kinda good now because we looked more capable at defending in that game, even with two wing-backs who aren't the greatest defenders and without a partner for Wanyama (who played well). But you know, we can't play Romeu along side him because that'd mean taking Davis out of the team who is so crucial to our attack :(

But it's also pretty bad since our attack looked dead on the same as last season. Still relying on Tadic or Mane brilliance out of nowhere to win us games. But we didn't buy an attacking midfielder or even a striker for some reason. Not that I thought a striker was as necessary as some were making out since we have long and jrod, but if were not even buying an attacking mid then at least get some first team quality in attack. Strange feeling when our centre-backs have the most attacking drive in our team.

Sorry for negativity but I've been holding it back for a while now, so it's not just reactionary to one game.

1.) 13 Sep 2015 09:04:16
Whilst we didn't buy an out and out attacking midfielder, the player with the creativity we are missing through the middle I genuinely believe is Clasie. Davis and JWP don't compliment each other, neither had the willingness to make a convincing approach in attack instead making the safe backwards or sideways pass. Ultimately it has to be one or the other, and I thought it was a real shame not seeing Juanmi given the opportunity to come on in the last quarter of an hour for one of them.

2.) 13 Sep 2015 16:48:52
But people have been saying this for months as mentioned not a new thing, but people banging on about we have enough offensively now with jayrod juammi etc have there tinted goggles on again, we should have bought a creative cm who can get us 10 goals and slide little balls through, someone like Praet, Mikitarian, siggurdson or personally I would have loved Shaquiri, i'm glad vvd settled in yesterday and handled Rondon well and ill put my hands up didn't think he had it in him BUT if only we had bought a acm we couldve been a bit more of a force and 4pts better off, oh well upwards and onwards coyr

My heart AND my head says it would be terrible business. He's what holds our defence together and he has several seasons left in him. He's our club captain also, meaning that letting him go would cause severe discontent throughout the club's people and through the fans.

All that for 9 million? To lose him to another PL club?
That would be completely stupid. But then again that's what worries me. I'm hoping that the success of our gambles in the past, which each have more or less been necessitated and insured, hasn't given our board a false sense of security when it comes to things like this.

Is it likely Dave Watson will leave if Koeman does? I very much hope not as he's quality and has a big impact on the reason Forster's here. Not that I think the club will sell Forster.

Pellegrini isn't even a good manager, let alone an ambitious choice. I'm very happy hearing Emery and Howe are the main names linked. Hopefully we get one of them.

There seems to be a little too much attraction from fans to managers who are at big clubs rather than ones of much quality.

I'd be happy with Wijnaldum if it wasn't for how carelessly he played for Newcastle. We're better than him, believe it or not.

watched the game. Pretty poor first half performance despite the goals. 2nd half looked much more comfortable and looked like the players had more interplay. End of the day the thing we really needed was the result and I'm very glad we got it.

I agree with who you've requested. Luckily I think if we make one or two of those signings intelligently it will be suffice. I love Oriol but maybe next summer we should be looking at a player like William Carvalho to bring in.

Can't see how Rojo would fit at all. no where near good enough for the first team and wouldn't be willing to be sitting on the bench for us.
