Is it just me that doesn't think we should be loaning players like Loftus-Cheek? Just means we're developing him for Chelsea at the expense of our own youngsters like Hojbjerg and JWP.

Would love him permanently (or Chalobah), but if we can't make that happen I'd rather see us bring in someone else. Eds, is it not possible for us to say to Chelsea we'll give them first option on VVD whenever we decide to sell as part of it to help induce them to sell permanently, or are terms like that just not the 'done thing' in transfer negotiations? Seems like a bargaining chip we could use since so many clubs are battling for him.

trudnai

{Ed002's Note - You cannot give another club first option on a player without the player agreeing.}

1.) 08 Jul 2017 20:53:14
Ah ok thanks.

2.) 09 Jul 2017 10:03:41
I 100% with the above statement. We shouldn't be loaning in players. It's not good for the clubs development.

3.) 09 Jul 2017 11:58:52
It works if the plan is to bring them in permanent if it works out. Ryan Bertrand is a prime example of the loan with option to buy working and elia was a prime example of what happens if you don't fit in. Granted domestic players won't have any issue with home sickness etc but players still struggle at certain clubs for different reasons. If the intent is to purchase I'm totally for it.

4.) 09 Jul 2017 13:29:56
Agreed, but from the sound of it this would just be a regular loan. If he does well, he will probably be sought after by bigger clubs than us or stay at chelsea. If he doesn't, then it will be a waste of time. Struggling to see the upside.

Tuchel has ruled himself out of the running as our next manager per reports. Shame but it was always a long shot.

Talk of Mauricio Pellegrino seems interesting. last time we hired a former Argentinian centre back named Mauricio from a small Spanish club it worked out alright for us!

Either way I trust the club when it comes to managers. they've got it right consistently other than Puel, who I think was a perfectly good coach who would still be our manager if it wasn't for a section of our fans who have the patience of a spastic in an ice cream parlour.

trudnai

1.) 15 Jun 2017 14:57:58
Not sure you're allowed to say spastic anymore. scope I believe 😜.

2.) 16 Jun 2017 06:37:30
I was hoping that the club would already have a replacement after the sacking of Puel. The board seems more organised than this and I would imagine that they wouldn't leave it for too long.

09 Jun 2017 16:54:27
Eds do you have any info on potential incoming managers?

Like everyone else I'd love Tuchel but that seems like a long-shot. any idea on the more realistic options we may be looking at?

trudnai

{Ed002's Note - The club have asked someone about Roger Schmidt.}

1.) 09 Jun 2017 21:21:15
I suggested Roger Schmidt some time back but got the old unbelievable ratings. He is available having parted with Bayer Leverkusen earlier this year. He is a great coach and specializes in the high pressing game that we came to enjoy under Poch.

2.) 10 Jun 2017 07:46:21
Schmidt has gone to China this morning.

3.) 10 Jun 2017 08:13:42
That's a shame, just read that he has signed a contract with Beijing, hopefully Saints will move a bit quicker if they are serious about Tuchel.

4.) 10 Jun 2017 11:55:49
I've been tracking the odds on this. Until 2 or 3 days ago, Paddy Power were the only firm offerings odds on our next manager, the Bet Victor appeared with some odds. PP had Tuchel at 8/ 1 a week ago, then 5/ 1 until yesterday when it was 7/ 2. I thought that was quite a move. This morning, he is now 15/ 8, huge move in odds terms. I'm trying hard not get excited, although seen too many things like to get carried away.

I wish Dorset was still around to confirm or deny this one early doors :-)

5.) 10 Jun 2017 13:44:56
Don't worry WanderingSaint. the schools break up in a few weeks, then he'll be back.

30 Jun 2016 14:58:06
Ads with Puel confirmed what would you say the chances are of him bringing Ben Arfa with him? Would be a fantastic coup for the Saints and fill a big need for us.

Also heard anything on potential wanyama replacements?

trudnai

1.) 30 Jun 2016 15:52:37
I agree, Puel seems to know how to get the best out of him! I like the look of Nampalys Mendy who would be a very good Wanyama replacement, are you aware of any interest in either of these players eds?

2.) 30 Jun 2016 15:40:38
**Eds.

{Ed001's Note - Ben Arfa? I know Southampton have been known to take a chance on suspect temperaments, hence the signings of Osvaldo and Ramirez, amongst others, but I thought that aspect of the black book had been shut now? I thought they had decided to cut back on ones with temperament and training issues, such as the Ben Arfa that was over a stone overweight in English footie.

As far as Wanyama goes, you signed his replacement last summer, Romeu. Someone mentioned Mendy with regards to a different team yesterday, but I can't remember who it was sorry.}

3.) 30 Jun 2016 16:34:49
Mendy has been linked to Leicester. Not up to date on how that's progressing though.

{Ed001's Note - yeah it wasn't them though that I was thinking of.}

4.) 30 Jun 2016 18:12:58
That's true Ed, he's not the sort of player we'd usually go for, as for Wanyama replacements, I think Romeu is good enough, however if he was to be suspended/ injured I think we'd miss his physical presence. Although we do have a lot of CM's, none of them have Romeu's physicality, so I could see us signing a player, but at the same time, I'd love to see players like Reed given a chance, as I rate him highly.

5.) 30 Jun 2016 22:54:50
Mendy is 5'6 and similar to Clasie. I would be surprised if we went for him.

6.) 01 Jul 2016 02:39:07
He's small, but seems more built then Classie!

Great game today and nice to see some goals for once. The more I watch though the more I'm convinced tadic shouldn't be starting, or at least needs someone to really push him.

Bring in a quality attacking midfielder, and add vvd ideally or a replacement cb, and I think this will be a great window for us.

As a side note - Yoshida was immense today.

trudnai

01 Jul 2016 19:59:11
Eds have you heard Southampton linked with any CB's this window?

Seems to me something we need with Fonte ageing but haven't heard any real talk of another option at CB. Yoshida has been better lately I still wouldn't like to see him overly relied upon in the event of an injury to VVD or injury/ decline of Fonte.

trudnai

{Ed002's Note - I have explained before those I know of. Right now with the window opening today and a new manager we will start to see opportunities.}

1.) 02 Jul 2016 00:13:18
What do you mean, decline of Fonte? Exceptional professional and totally dedicated to SFC . He is still at the top of his game and with VVD they are probably the best centre back pairing in the PL . I agree we need cover which I think we have in Gardos . Maybe me but I just don't believe that post, Jose Fonte is just about the best player we have and is and always will be a legend at St. Mary's.

2.) 02 Jul 2016 00:49:10
And been superb for Portugal.

3.) 02 Jul 2016 10:17:40
No doubt Fonte is a great player and won't decline but still we have europa league fixtures so gardos won't be enough.

4.) 02 Jul 2016 10:21:01
No doubt fonte is a great player and won't decline now but let's remember we have europa league fixtures so I don't think gardos will be enough.

5.) 02 Jul 2016 11:19:32
I agree that Fonte is a great player but there is always a risk of decline.
Additionally, Yoshida has been a liability when he has played and Gardos has just come back from a long injury so he'll need to be eased in along with Rodríguez.
The Ruben Semedo rumours have ceased, but he'd be a smart move (or someone of his quality) for this coming season, whether or not to play often, purchasing a long term replacement would be wise and give us greater strategic freedom.

6.) 02 Jul 2016 15:51:13
John Terry was probably the best CB a couple of seasons ago when chelski won the league. Last season his form fell off a cliff. Fonte is getting older. We need to plan to get another decent CB to play alongside VVD. Gardos is very much untried due to injuries. I think he has all the attributes to be that player but we will have to wait and see. Don't discount a drop in form from Fonte as age gets every player. The good thing is that he is a great leader, has good positional play plus has VVD alongside him with a bit of pace.

I think it's time for Tadic to be dropped. He slows things down so much and takes all the speed out of our counter attacks.

We've been linked to three cb's?

Would quite like Vietto, although I wouldn't say he's an upgrade on Gabbi. Unless we plan on playing 2 up front I'd say we're fine up front with Gabbi/ Austin depending what type of striker we want and then long and Gallagher.

Vietto seems a good player but if we sign him surely either him or Gabbi will just get lost in the shuffle and won't reach his potential. I think if we sign a striker it should be a youngster who'd accept a smaller role rather than a reclamation project who needs game time now.

Agree with Sam completely. Think he'd do alright. It just seems a bit steep.

30m seems very steep, but then 20 seems a lot for wimmer too. Anyone's going to cost a lot but I think Gibson would be my favourite of the three. That said I don't know a lot about hoedt.

I think we might keep him. Morgan and wanyama were both in similar situations and we held firm and made them wait a year if I remember right? We've shown we're willing to put our foot down in the past.

Of course he'll just be off next year still.

I don't think the plan is for him to just throw money at the club from day one. The infrastructure is there for us to grow naturally.

I think we'll have a game where things click and they start going in for us. No need for a striker as I dot think we can get anyone who's much of an upgrade on Gabbi or Austin.

They need better service and couldn't agree more that our biggest need is an exciting winger/ attacking midfielder. In an ideal world boufal would be that guy but not sure we can rely on that. Would like to see boufal get a proper run of games in tadic's place though, I thought he looked better yesterday and seemed much stronger and less willing to be bullied.

Roberts permanently or someone similar would be a good addition, unless they think sims is good enough.

Loaning out sims would make sense if Roberts does come, but I'm not too keen on getting Roberts on loan in the first place.

Have to say even ignoring the principle of not wanting to sell VVD, I think 40 mil plus sakho would be a terrible terrible deal, especially given the rumoured figures. Even worse if we then go and throw all that at wimmer!

Understand the frustration but equally I wouldn't say we have any desperate needs if we keep VVD. As nice as it would be to improve, worst thing you can do is spend for he sake of it if there's nothing better we can afford.
