As stated, we're in for Koulibaly form Napoli. I believe Talksport are suggesting that the deal for VVD has 'stalled' though can't see this anywhere else. I wonder if we''ll go for both if the chance came up?

NOT a rumour but as Antonio Cassano's contract has been cancelled I wonder if he'd be interested in coming to us on a short term deal. I imagine his salary would be a stumbling block but with no transfer fee and our need another striker considering the injurys / rehabilitation of J Rod and Long he'd be a good option.

I was posting the same, he used to b superb prob bit long in tooth now but still do a job

2.) 27 Jan 2015 16:32:09
Personally I'd like us to sign Andre Schurrle but I'd 've very suprised if that happened.

3.) 27 Jan 2015 16:48:53
In fact £22m is being quoted so that won't happen!

4.) 27 Jan 2015 17:00:39
I was going to type this myself, bit long in tooth now but could probably do impact job for us

5.) 27 Jan 2015 20:18:48
Don't normally get caught up in rumours but inside info from a pretty good source has stated that watch this space, something is afoot at saints regarding possible ins. The hierarchy want success and the chance of a CL place - finances are there for Koeman. Let's be patient and see - exciting times ahead 3pts on Sunday COYR's

6.) 28 Jan 2015 00:46:37
Mane is back so i think that's our hope of us getting another striker gone

You've probably already seen but Osvaldo is talking to Juve about going out on loan with them having a £15m option to buy in the summer. Source - tv website.

Grandoite

1.) Super but I'll bet my house, my wife my kids and my dog that even if they sign him in the summer peramanently £15m will be more than what they actually pay, a lot more!
Of course Cortese and MoPo won't shoulder an ounce of blame just unfortunate he didn't settle in England.

2.) Juve need to sell in order to buy so there's no guarantee he'll be sold in the summer, I doubt he'll be going on loan, they're interested but we don't want to get rid

3.) I heard the loan deal is already in place for 400K with some bonuses and goal add on doo-berry's. with an option to buy for 20m euro lmao. surely can't be true.

Sain Gibbs

4.) Seeing as Cortese is no longer at the club, I doubt he'll have anything to say about it at all.

5.) @ Aussie Saint, what was the point in saying that? No one said that Cortese has anything to do with the sale/ loan. What was said was that blame can't be laid at Cortese's door, even though he helped sign him. It was purely a chance taken on an incredibly talented player, who unfortunately couldn't overcome personal/ anger issues and thus didn't gel. I for one would still like to give him a chance, even though I do agree with the punishment. It can take time to settle in a new league, whether that be moving to a foreign country or being promoted to a higher standard. Prime examples are Ronaldo (2 seasons to adjust), Bale (spurs tried to exchange him plus cash for Downing) and Lallana this season. Last season he didn't look up to Premier League standard, now he is arguably one of the best players in the whole of the league. My point being is that yes Osvaldo has an attitude and some anger issues, but he needs time to settle and thus these issues are going to become exagerated. I understand if we do sell him, but if we don't surely united support for him at games can only aid the transition process.

6.) He gets a lot of slack for being a "very talented player who didn't settle"? Club paid a record fee for someone Poch knew with a reputation for being a nutter. That's like buying a used car for a top price after an AA inspector said it's been in a crash!

IF and I emphasise IF, our current form / level continues then looking at our fixtures for September I can't see us getting many if any points. I wonder if that would result in MH (or MAHU if you prefer) leaving? Personally, I believe he was the wrong choice though I can understand why he was given the chance of managing us. Should he leave his position then I believe Laurent Blanc would be a great candidate to replace MH but I imagine that we'll leave it to late and get relegated. Pessimistic, yes, but also realistic. I don't see many teams worse than us and change is needed throughout the club.

In the first 11 games under Mauricio Pellegrino we won 3, drew 4, lost 4; a win percentage of 27% and a total of 13 points. We scored 9 (0.8 goals per game), conceded 11 (1 gpg) . So far under MH we have won 2, drawn 3, lost 6; a win record of 18% and a total of 9 points accrued. We’ve scored 10 (0.9 gpg) and conceded 16 (1.5 gpg) . MH has improved our strike rate a fraction but not enough to see us win more games as at the same time, our defence has become even worse than under our previous manager. Extra win aside, the draws acquired under Pellegrino gave us valuable points that supported an early stasis in mid-table.

You may consider this comparison unfair as MH came in at the tail end of last season and kept us up. But statistically speaking its possible that Pellegrino could have seen the team accrue enough points to keep us up in the end. As he was sacked, we will never know, but as the projection for MP over those final 8 games is so similar to the results MH achieved, I think the comparison is entirely fair.

MH has had a full summer transfer window and a pre-season to improve the squad and the tactics but on the evidence thus far, has done neither. If anything, the team looks as fragile this season as it did at its worst under Pellegrino (which was the exception rather than the rule) but in sacrificing the defensive system, there have been little to no gains at the other end of the pitch. The 5-3-2 was dysfunctional at the end of last season and the summer purchases suggested a move away from that formation given the preferred positions of those brought in. Instead, we started with it, and have since replaced it with an equally dysfunctional 4-4-2 with players out of position and considered so unsuitable for it that the ghost of Shane Long continues to haunt the starting 11 as a striker.

Until the players take the field in their strongest positions I find it hard to criticise them when they are simply playing as best they can with the bad hand they have been dealt. This shouldn’t be happening three games into a new season when the manager has signed players, presumably with a formation in mind. If that’s not the case, then it lends great weight to the criticism of MH for Stoke’s last few transfer windows. The deterioration of an already shaky defence also supports the criticism of his coaching of his former team. If MH intended to play a 4-4-2, why did he not acquire the personnel capable of playing the system and why did we not see it in the pre-season friendlies?

My fear with MH has always been his record is patchy, Stoke last season were awful and he has no history of improving players, which is the sort of coach I think we need. It’s no mystery that we saw our best under Pochettino and deteriorated gradually since. It is, of course, still very early in the season and there’s plenty of time to turn things around. If MH can find a formation that suits our players better and make us stronger defensively, we can still have a mid-table season. But the signs, even in the infancy of this season, are ominous. MH, despite citing his tactical flexibility as a plus, has yet to play a consistent team and achieve consistent performances or results. Looking around us, West Ham have a good manager and a good squad who are likely to improve as a result. Burnley may struggle while they overstretch themselves in Europe, but that could end at any time and they’re likely to steer clear of danger in the end. Newcastle may also find the going hard but have an excellent manager at the helm. Huddersfield are certainly struggling and might have a tough season along with Cardiff but neither team are likely to sink without a fight. At the moment, the company we keep is closer to the latter two than anyone who will look to finish in the top half.

2.) 28 Aug 2018 14:00:46
I think we're seeing a lot of panic from Hughes already, the same we saw from MP. He started with a 5-3-2 and in the Everton game at half team took off Cedric and swapped to a 4-4-2 and we all agreed on here that we played much better. Therefore, he's stuck to the 4-4-2 formation hoping he'd get a result. This hasn't worked. I can see the same trends as we've saw last season. He'll get changing the squad until he gets the result he wants.
His playing style isn't really one that suits the Premier League anymore. I feel like the board should have looked for a new manager in the summer, instead of going with the easy option. I think any new manager post MP would have provided the morale boost we needed.

3.) 28 Aug 2018 16:34:53
I know this is partially not true but for flip sake were only three games in!
Clearly we have issues but I genuinely think w'ell stay up and be OK.
everyone chill out a bit.

4.) 29 Aug 2018 05:34:13
I agree with that to a degree but my concerns are
The team need confidence from somewhere the Brighton away win should peek the camp up so hopefully they’ll get something from palace
Hughes needs to find a style and stick with it and he might need to revamp his ideas with our current squad
Hopefully 3 points Saturday hopefully.

5.) 29 Aug 2018 16:44:42
Yup. 'Hopefully' is the problem. After last season and the start to this one, expectations are at a low ebb and rather than expecting or believing we will beat the teams likely to finish in the lower half of the table, home or away, all we have is hope.

I was all for giving Pellegrino more time at the start of last season as he was a new manager to the team and the league who needed time to show what he could do. I'm certainly not calling for MH's head now. MH does deserve more time, though not as much as Pellegrino as he is not new to the league and he got a head start with the end of last season. He knew the players, the deficiencies in the squad all before taking over in the summer.

I just want the team to start playing better and winning points. Then, hope can be replaced with belief and we'll all feel a little more comfortable in avoiding a repeat of last season.

6.) 30 Aug 2018 22:02:23
I agree that MH deserves more time but there has to be a time limit. If he doesn't get things turning the right way by the end of November I think we will need to look at bringing in someone else who can hopefully get things moving in the right direction.

A little while ago we were linked with Mariano Diaz who at the time was playing for Real Madrid. Having looked up his current status I was disappointed to see that he transferred to Lyon for £8m and is currently scoring (on average) 0.6 goals every game. We won't be able to get him now but his previous scoring exploits and current form in addition to his relatively cheap cost by today's standards does make me wonder why he wasn't deemed good enough.

We chose gabbi over him.

A lot of frustration with MP at the moment - and quite understandably so in my opinion. He was my preferred candidate in the summer so I can't complain too much but should he leave who is likely / available to replace him? Tbh we're not as attractive proposition as we were last summer so I'm struggling to come up with names. People may mention Dyche but he didn't go to Everton so why would he come to us? I wonder if Koeman may be in line for a return? Thoughts on that and potential suitors most welcome.

A bit disappointed by last night's result but if we win against Liverpool I'll be satisfied with 4 points from 6. However, I really do wish we went for a proven striker in either of the last two windows. Pelle is good but I don't feel he's the one to get us 20+ goals a season. Strikers win you matches, defences win you championships. I'm not saying we'd win the league with a top striker but we have the defense for Champs League qualification but not the striker. I'm more than happy to be proven wrong!

Grandoite

1.) It's a great shame that Saints' two major signings, "the best two players in Dutch football", stopped playing in November.

Pelle "the goal machine" has two league goals since the end of October. "Assists king" Tadic has one assist since the end of October.

Frankly, they're both well on the way to being flop signings who briefly sparkled until they got found out. I don't see any signs of encouragement that either is about to turn the corner and I suspect their performance level will continue to disappoint between now and the end the season. Can a transfer be considered a success if the player only contributes for around a quarter of the campaign?

Koeman sounds very frustrated with his forward players, and it's not surprising. Throw in the two most attacking midfielders, Davis and Ward-Prowse, who've contributed a grand total of zero goals between them (when even Jack Cork was able to chip in a few, from a more defensive position and a handful of games) and you've got a side with a serious lack of quality at one end.

And the great white hope is Shane Long, and his two-to-five goals per season! Deary me.

It's going to be a test of the manager's ability to work out a way to get his team firing again. I can only see the season petering out with a whimper from here, sadly.

2.) I've been wondering about Pelle and Tadic too. let's face it they don't stop being good players after a few months.
I was reading a really good article about Giroud last week. It highlighted that in his first season like Pelle, he started very well scoring 12 goals inthe first 3 months, but then his goals dried up. Like Saints, Arsenal didn't really have other Striking options, and it wasn't until Giroud had an enforced lay off through injury that he had a break, and as soon as he came back, he was fresh and started scoring again.
Both Pelle and Tadic have been victims of the lack of options in the saints squad, leading to fatigue. It's been clear for a while that both Tadic and Pelle needed a break for a few weeks. With Djuricic coming in, along with Elia, and Mane, it looks like Tadic could well be rested. Pelle will have to keep on going unless we play Gallagher at the moment.

I'm sure that next season, with increased attacking options, Pelle's form won't be allowed to drop so far, although we should have all those extra game in Europe to play ;)

Saints in so many ways are victims of their own success. All we can do is keep supporting the team, and cheer them on to success.

Not a rumour as such but I saw that Hull are going in for Wellbeck who apparently has no future at OT under LVG. If true I guess our purchase of Long has funded Hull's purchase of an England international which makes great sense.

Grandoite

1.) 15 Aug 2014 21:22:43
I've no problem with that. It's only Welbeck. If he played for any club other than United, he would not be in the England squad.

The rumour has been given credence by appearing in the Daily Star today. I'm hoping we get both, we'll then have a well balanced squad. Hopefully the Everton result does give the squad a wake-up call as a couple of players have suggested it will. We can then kick on.

I think we could get to 37 - still not enough mind but with a shock result we may achieve 40. A great deal depends on recruitment in the window though.

Agree with you on the need for a top striker / poacher. I like Pelle but think we need better. The trouble is that means spending £20m+ and I don't think we have the appetite for that.
