Just reading on SSN that Tottenham are looking to launch a late bid to get Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. What are peoples thoughts on this?

On his day he is unplayable, but he does have off-days. £35m was being touted recently by Everton - Would anyone on here be happy to see £25m and a certain Victor Wanyama return?

SaintBen1

1.) 30 Jan 2020 15:03:48
LOL! no way, why on earth would we sell him in January Benny Boy? 35 million is nothing in this market plus we wouldn't spend 35 million on another player. Every player has off days, our whole squad is full of them.

2.) 30 Jan 2020 20:55:03
We may be known as a selling club but I just can't see this happening.

3.) 31 Jan 2020 08:59:53
I think it's just a rumour created by the media and nothing more. Hopefully, it doesn't distract Pierre. We could sell him in the summer and replace him if the price is right, but he is the captain so wouldn't really want him to leave.

09 Aug 2019 18:19:24
Just seen the squad list and confirmed shirt numbers for the coming season - Is there any reason why no one has taken the number 8 shirt? Are we expecting a free agent to sign?

Reading this evening that Josh Sims is in advanced talks to join New York Red bulls on loan for the season. Surprised by this, thought he had a good chance to stake a claim for a starting berth this year at Saints. Thoughts?

SaintBen1

1.) 06 Aug 2019 21:15:53
It's a shame because he has talent. I think with Boufal coming back, his chances will be limited.

2.) 07 Aug 2019 00:38:24
Difference between Josh and Boufal is that Josh is aggressive, fast, positive and intelligent . exactly the attributes need in the PL . should never let him go .

3.) 07 Aug 2019 09:27:54
I think it's a good idea let him get one more season of first team football. I fear his chances would be limited this season otherwise. Could just be a rumour, what was the source of this one? Rare for players to go to MLS.

4.) 07 Aug 2019 13:04:45
Sims is a good player but the problem is he's a bit lightweight for the premiership. skilful but gets knocked off ball to easily.

5.) 08 Aug 2019 10:08:40
I was under the impression he'll be back after Christmas. Assuming he's had a few months first team football hopefully he'll provide a new energy for the 2nd half of the season, he'll be like a new signing!

06 Jul 2019 19:23:12
I've just read on SSN that Leeds have accepted a bid for Pontus Jansson from an un-named Premiership Team. Saints were looking at him last year and again in January - Could it be us? Reckon he would be an excellent addition. What do you guys think?

SaintBen1

1.) 06 Jul 2019 22:44:46
Reports that he's either going to Sheffield united or Brentford. Haven't heard any rumours about us being in for him.

07 Jun 2019 09:52:18
Reading this morning that Saints have agreed a £13.5m deal to sign Nigerian striker David Okereke from Serie B side Spezia (Although, I will add this comes from The Sun so may be way off the mark! )

SaintBen1

1.) 07 Jun 2019 11:12:24
Thanks SaintBen1. However I have seen this guy linked with Derby, palace, wesh ham, clubs in France and Belgium. Not saying the Sun would print something that isn't true of course.

2.) 07 Jun 2019 13:25:05
Adam Blackmore has said on his twitter that saints have made no contact but che Adams is in talks.

Been reading that Leicester are willing to listen to offers for Demarai Gray. I believe we made an approach for him last season, and with Boufal bearing an exit; I'd put money on us trying to secure him again as a pacey attack minded winger.

1.) 19 Sep 2020 21:53:48
Possible deal with/ for Vestergard?

23 Jul 2019 21:35:26
People may laugh at me for saying this, possibly even say I'm crazy but - I'm reading this evening that Real Madrid are ready to write-off any transfer fee for Gareth Bale, just to get his salary off the wage bill (£25m per annum) .

How refreshing would it be in today's game if Bale was to resign for Southampton, become a true club legend and return back to where it all started for remainder of his 4/ 5 years at the top level? God knows he surely doesn't need the money - If (and it's a huge huge if) something like that happened, it would hopefully make today's sports stars realise that maybe, just maybe there is more to life than money. And for one re-energise my love for the beautiful game!

Ben
I usually like reading your posts :-)
I am guessing you are either suffering from heat stroke . or one too many wines out in the sun :-) ) )
While players like Austin and Forster are happy to take (rob) their wages without caring whether they play, the likes of Mr Bale will never give up his money for a return to Saints (sadly)
The days of MLT are long gone .

2.) 23 Jul 2019 23:14:15
I want some of the same drugs that you have SaintBen 1 😂😂😂.

4.) 23 Jul 2019 23:19:04
Shame though, would have been the best left-field football story since a certain Kevin Keegan arrived all those years ago.

I actually think Saintben1 is right

He is crazy

My thoughts on our current transfer activity - i. e. Trimming the squad.

If we do in fact trim the squad down to have say 15-18 proven players, with the rest of the 25 made up of improving and up/ coming younsters from the U23's - This would give us a much lower wage overhead than we currently have - It could also provide us with the chance to pay a larger weekly wage for some outstanding performers to try and take us to the next level?

2/ 3 players @ £100-£150k per week
10 players @ £50-£70k per week
10 U23 players @ £10k per week

With this model, we have a fine balance across the 3 'tiers' of player, but potentially could go for those players that we haven't been able to afford, or keep in recent years. Thoughts?

I can't stop watching the highlights of yesterdays game! Everything abut the performance was fantastic!

Ralph put the right 11 on the pitch, and set them up perfectly - The players put so much into the performance and the crowd fed off the enthusiasm and really were the proverbial 12th man. Really excited now for the rest of the season and dare I say hopeful now for 6 points from the next two games on that showing! ;-)

1.) 17 Dec 2018 18:17:29
Agree Ben. Still think that we need 2 or 3 new faces in January though.

{Ed0333's Note - your new manager is a breath of fresh air. Seems like he’s got a personality too compared to the Moody Trudy that you got rid off. Excellent piece of recruitment and I hope you stay up. You beat a resurgent arsenal team so you should be super happy. You’re biggest problem will be keeping hold of this guy I think.

2.) 17 Dec 2018 19:02:40
Cheers Ed, I agree and think we will stay up too. Yes keeping hold of him may be an issue but if he goes to a big club, hopefully other promising managers may see themselves taking a similar route and using us as their stepping stone. We can’t complain when they go if we’ve had 2 or 3 years good service, as they must have been a success to have a bigger club seeking them and fans are quick to moan if it is a mediocre appointment like the last one.

I would still question why Hughes was given a long term contract in the back of the results at the end of last season, but I care much less now RH is in charge.

{Ed0333's Note - yes mate Hughes was a tool and have no idea why he was given anything more than a 1 year rolling contract. If he gets a premier league job again I’ll be horrified. RH is gonna be a breath of fresh air enjoy the magical mystery tour mate because I’m not sure he’ll be around for the long term.

3.) 18 Dec 2018 09:05:58
I'd like to think he'd stay around until at least the end of next season (if results continue to go the way they went on Sunday) . He seems like quite a humble man, if you consider he didn't want to take the Bayern Munich job because he didn't think he was ready. This shows to me that he has a clear career path and a massive focus and drive to become the best, step by step.

In his press conferences, the way he handled himself on Sunday. He knows what he wants and that's great. He is very clear in the way he comes across and I want that. I don't want the transparency that we had with Mark Hughes. Where it's like "We lost 5-0 but we played well and could've scored 6 goals". Still defensive errors and decision making costing us the two goals and Arsenal could've scored more, so I'm trying not to get too carried away. But a great win and hopefully we will seem like a new team by the end of Jan!

4.) 18 Dec 2018 11:12:52
I was delighted with the result and the work rate of the players but I'm not sure it was a fantastic performance. There were many positives to take from it but Arsenal always looked threatening and were better at retaining the ball and stealing it back with a press than we were. We gifted them two goals and Romeu's speed of thought and lack of defensive awareness remains deeply troubling for someone in his role. We were also gifted three goals by Arsenal's makeshift defence, as fantastic as the crosses and finishes were.

I'm not trying to pour cold water on things after a great result, but just don't want anyone to get so carried away and expect a walk in the park against Huddersfield or West Ham. Fortune was on our side on Sunday to reward the efforts of the players but it remains a very real possibility that performances will be up and down for a while yet as personnel adjust to the new style of play.

Can't agree more though about the appointment of RH. Excited to see the changes he can make here. I hope he stays for at least two full seasons to get the squad and club right.

5.) 19 Dec 2018 08:41:03
Figo .
Romeu's speed of thought and lack of defensive awareness remains deeply troubling for someone in his role.

Absolutely spot on . The one very weak link in our armour. I am surprised he is being championed as the 'one player that will flourish under RH' .

But somehow i have faith that the new man has spotted that already .

What are everyone else's thoughts on a potential Martin O'Neill / Roy Keane Management team coming in for the Saints?

SaintBen1

1.) 21 Nov 2018 14:38:34
Could work. Roy would take no prisoners and I'm not sure the board is ready for him.

2.) 21 Nov 2018 15:20:10
1 goal in the Nations League and 1 win all year - wouldn’t mind a bit of Keane up the backside but definitely not O’Neill.

3.) 21 Nov 2018 17:32:23
I posted earlier on Mark Hughes, I am not sure about him, but I believe we are way up the table of chances created, but we just can’t find the net. After they get on the pitch it’s the players who are in control. Do we have the players that Mark wants, or do the board not want to spend any money. One day we might surprise someone and bag a hatful, you never know. Keep on believing, I have supported the Saints for almost sixty years, and we are higher up the league than we are for most of that time.

4.) 22 Nov 2018 07:54:46
I think that O'Neill is a decent tactician and would do well with a team full of top players but unfortunately we have a team full of average players.

{Ed001's Note - tactician? He is an abysmal tactician. What O'Neill does well is take average players and make them believe in themselves and play better as a team, at least when a club manager. His methods do not translate at all to international football because they rely on building a team as he is so inept tactically and his coaching is even worse. He is a motivator. He has always been ridiculously overrated. Even at Celtic, where his European results were bettered by Strachan after him, even though Strachan was having to strip down the squad to recover from O'Neill's overspending. It was O'Neill's tenure that put Aston Villa in trouble, he buys older players and puts them on big wages, usually never using them as he sticks with his old favourites no matter what.}

5.) 22 Nov 2018 10:54:37
Terrible idea. Its another example of backwards thinking and looking to hire someone because they have experience and I am so tired of hearing fans interested in hiring someone who will shout at players or give them a kick up the backside. That’s what so many said about MH coming in and unsurprisingly the effect has been non-existent.

We need a modern head coach, supported by a coaching staff, that can develop these players technically and mentally. That can coach effective tactics as well as improve the understanding of players in respect of their individual roles and working as part of a cohesive team. A head coach with a system and style of play that matches the aspiration of the fans and the club. Listen to Ross Barkley’s comments about the change in coaching since Sarri took over at Chelsea. A manager with a style of play is teaching the players how to perform in that system, similar to Pep and Poch and other modern coaches.

Its not enough to rely on the players to adapt and outplay an opposition if they are not properly prepared through coaching. It is not enough to believe someone shouting at the players will make them all play better. It is not enough to expect someone telling the players they’re great to improve performances either. That is football coaching of two decades ago. Time to move on.

6.) 22 Nov 2018 13:14:57
Fair comment, so figosasilva - Who would you go for?

7.) 24 Nov 2018 07:49:57
Not sure who the club have been tracking but after this afternoon at Fulham we’re probably going to find out within the coming weeks
Can’t see us getting anything really we’ve got a few injuries
And they’ve now got the tinker man who will give them a boost 100%
It’s going to be another dull afternoon I expect.

8.) 24 Nov 2018 10:24:14
I think there have been some interesting names mentioned in the posts on this topic. Hassenhutl, Lampard, we've seen Wagner and now Daniel Farke at Norwich come in from second tier in Germany and do great things.

My personal pick at the moment - I'd love to see someone like Hannes Wolf who looks an exciting young coach at Hamburger SV. He's only just started there though so think a move is unlikely.

But that's the club's business model, to buy talent; nurture it and then sell for a profit - It's been well documented.

There just doesn't seem to be anyone willing to make a through pass, or have a shot from distance (for the chance/ threat of being booed or jeered) - The players are not performing, but isn't that the job of the manager to turn around?

I'm starting to wonder whether Ralph's ideas are not suited to the Prem or possibly just our team - If the board ever decided to make a change, they could do a lot worse than Garry Monk with James Beattie as his assistant (#SaintsDreamTeam)

Why is it that we only start playing with 5 minutes left to play! Again we started the game far too slowly. No through balls, No movement, No chances created. No confidence!

Totally agree! I'd like to see the following team play on Saturday against Everton -

McCarthy
Cedric Bednarek Danso Bertrand/ McQueen
Hojbjerg
Djenpo Armstrong Boufal
Ings Redmond.
