Schneiderlin - from Paul Wootton to Schweinsteiger. Says it all for Morgan. Great player.

Don't think I've felt this sad with a player leaving since Channon went walkabout.

For me the saddest loss was when Chris Marsden left. Loved that guy!

I think it's around £9m. But I see on a Feyenoord site between £12m and £15m.

Lazio have qualified for the Champions League. I doubt de Vrij will swap that for Saints.

What would be everyone's thoughts on us taking jonny Evans from man u? 8-10 mill. Experienced, decent pro? Not sure if his wages would be astronomical but if he's touted as being available I think he'd be a good, low risk signing

Not got the best mobility, I think that needs to be a key strength to whoever we bring in at centre back as it will complement with Fonte's more positionally minded defending.

Too injury prone, decent player though

I'd take him. I think alongside Fonte he could shine.
That said I think most defenders in the league would improve alongside Fonte.
On that note we will find out how good Toby is next year. He might just turn out to be another Lovren

^ wouldn't necessarily say it's Fonte that makes them better, more the system we play

Are you serious if we want to progress then no way should we go for Evans he's rubbish not good enough for a team looking for Europe

But good enough for a team that's been in the champions league year on year?

Long time reader, first time poster.

I cannot believe the negativity and despair of some of the people on here!? It's ridiculous! Are you all like this in every day life?! I swear some of you could win the lottery and still end up complaining about having to pay tax! Lol

For those saying we will be left behind. We have already made four signings. Admittedly stekelenberg is a stop gap (with something to prove and unrivalled experience) and cuco is just cover/filler, bit we have signed two young, very promising players. I think soares looks like he could be a great replacement and possibly even an improvement on Clyne. And juanmi could be exactly what we were missing last year. We have Jrod back, which is essentially a new signing since he didn't play at all last year, and it looks like gaston will be given a final chance to compete with tadic for the creative no. 10 role. Along with Sam Gallagher as our youth option I think that is our forward line pretty much sorted. Maybe we will look at signing an absolutely rapid right winger on loan but for me it looks good.

Our midfield which people keep picking up on. We can't do much until we know what happens with schneiderlin, but with reed as the homegrown replacement for cork, ward-prowse, wanyama, Davis and either schneiderlin or 1-2 replacements if/when he goes, I think that is taken care of too.

So now our defence, which seems to be getting everyone so menstrual since Toby decided to go to habitual underachievers spurs. First off, Toby was a good player. But if he was THAT good, do u not think AM would have kept him? He missed a 1/3 of the season through injury last year (mostly with hamstrings. NOT A GOOD SIGN) and he also played a handful of games in midfield. So he really isn't as crucial to our back line as everyone seems to think. The world is not over. We obviously have other targets, other backups. Do u all really think we've spent millions on the black box, scouting etc to only find one player and not have anyone else in mind?! It's just crazy some of the reactions on here to us losing out on a transfer target!! The money that was earmarked for Toby will go elsewhere, and if schneiderlin does go, I imagine some of that money will also go on defensive recruitment too. We have replaced Clyne, we have fonte, we have yoshida and gardos as back up, and we have Bertrand with targett as his back up. Another top quality centre back, with cuco able to cover at right back means that we have taken care of the squad. Why are some of you insisting we throw more BIG money around on transfers that may not work out? Our club need players who match our philosophy and our ethos. Not more dani osvaldos. And we also need to be financially responsible so we don't do.a pompey. We need solid foundations, steady growth and a bright future. Nothing I've seen so far has convinced me that we aren't doing that right now.

We are Southampton, we give our youth a chance, we don't block the pathway to the first team when we know that our academy products have the potential to grow into first team (and first class) players. Yes, our conveyor belt of quality has seen the bigger clubs pick off some of our best products, but without that happening we probably wouldn't be where we are now because 1) it kept us afloat when we needed the money
2) we were able to reinvest the money when and where it was needed
3) it's gained us worldwide recognition for the players we have produced.
And I believe that in time, we will hopefully keep more than we have to sell.

Look at ajax, look at athletico Madrid, look at dortmund! They have all lost world class talent to bigger clubs, it is how they still exist in the modern game. We have to start somewhere, and I would rather do it this way, and have a long term plan, than throw silly money about, buy a cup, do a pompey and end up playing Accrington Stanley away, Tuesday night, league 2 in ten years time. Have a word with yourselves, trust the board, trust the plan. I know it's hard since we're saints and we always used to get our hopes up and watch it crumble, but it's different now. We're at he forefront. We will to where we want to be, in time, with patience and support. We March On

spot on. I also feel that if we had spent double what we did on juanmi and soares people wouldn't be complaining as much. We got a bargain on them 2 and just because they was cheap people don't see them as ambitious signing. It was very good buisness

Well said MilkySaint. And if there remains any who doubt what he is saying, have a listen to Les Reed interview and why we can not pay huge salaries and transfers.
It was the "big" clubs who pushed through the current rules for their own selfish reasons. That is the current football world we live in, not some fantasy/virtual world where we can do as we please without any consequence.

outstanding post. completely nailed it, I log on here to listen to other positive Saints fan enjoy this time of year as we should. I can't stand the whinging and moaning that some of the guys on here get up too, and completely unjustified. There is no crisis. those people need to a crisis to have something to talk about and when there isn't one. they invent one. I don't think there has ever been a better time to be a fan of a well run club in the premiere league.
