I really don't think we are going to sign Osvaldo and certainly not for 18 million euros! Many reasons for this.

1. Its been in the papers for months now if we wanted him or he wanted to come to us we would of probably done it by now

2. He wants to stay in Italy and go to Inter

3. Roma want him to not stay in Italy so we would in fact get him for less than the Italian clubs and they will not be paying as much as 18 million euros for him, so the papers 'sources' are complete BS as we would be getting him for 10 m euros max

4. Sky Italia are terrible at getting transfers right

5. He definitely does not fit the 'Southampton way' with his attitude in the past and all the players we sign seem to be very level headed. Why risk disruption in the squad?

6. Since when has Cortese splashed cash on a player over 23 years old? Obviously it could happen but It hasn't happened yet, Ramirez, Jay Rod, Wanyama and Lovern all young

It seems some of our fans are so desperate for a Striker they don't care about how he could disrupt the squads team spirit!

If we get him fair enough but I just can't see it

Lambert boruc fonte Davis just to name a few all over 23 lol nice essay

Agree0 Disagree0

Did we splash the cash on them? Nope we didn't they were cheap, learn to read.

You will, if he signs, see the difference in finishing ability with Osvaldo. Rickie is one man and can't do it all by himself. We have a great midfield creating the chances. Watch Osvaldo and Ramirez together and you will see the chemistry.

Agree0 Disagree0

You only splash the cash in the Premier League, you have to if you want to be anything other than a hanger on.

Agree0 Disagree0

I personally actually don't want him. I think he would cause a lot of trouble. The Roma fans despise him with a passion and I don't think he would play for us for football reasons. Tottenham were interested but were supposedly put off by the players attitude.

Agree0 Disagree0

Saint IQ your logic is totally wrong in my opinion!

I think the fact we've been trying to get him for a long time, and the fact he hasn't flat out refused us (he flat out refused Wolfsburg) means there is still hope.

If anything because we've not been totall rejected by him, it will become more likely he signs for us the longer we wait, as he will begin to run out of options. We're not his first choice as he wants to stay in Italy and improve his chances of playing in the WC - a fair enough decision on his part. But if a move to a top Serie A team or top Prem team doesn't develop, he will sign for us.

I think it will be one that takes a bit longer, because he is assessing all his options first.

Agree0 Disagree0

1 mil for league 1 striker I would say at the time was splashing the cash wouldn't you

Agree0 Disagree0

I just think that some fans are so desperate for us to get him when he isn't the only striker in the world out there that can improve our team

I also don't think my logic is wrong, since when have we signed a player with his attitude? Since we got to the Prem when have we spent more than a few million on a player who is over 23/24?

We may well get him but LOGIC suggests we won't

Agree0 Disagree0

Osvaldo has obviously split opinions with talk of him having a bad attitude etc etc. Did anyone of the doom mongers stop to think that MoPo actually knows this guy really well?

For me this 'fact' actually takes a lot of the risk away from the signing.

Agree0 Disagree0

Exactly what St Christopher said.

Pochettino has worked with him before. Stop getting all worked up by rumours of his attitude. You know what the press are like, and often things get mis-interpreted due to language translations.

He's a top athlete which is why he's passionate and wants to go to a good club and isn't rushing to join Saints. I'd rather have someone who is reluctant to come here because he knows how good he is, than someone who bites our hand off because they know they can't do better!

Poch knows what he is like, and I trust Poch.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the key to dressing room harmony is that our players welcome more talent and accept others may have special ability and worth their money. It's a very hard thing to keep everyone happy, especially as the higher the grade, the more demanding these players are. I don't envy MP and NC but thank God they seem to be really good at their jobs. I think NC is the last chairman anyone will want to mess with. Look at Puncheon.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well that is why I think Cortese and Poch aren't even trying to get him because he knows what he is like. If the manager link was going to get him here it would of happened by now. I just think all these stories of us getting him are agents and papers making up stories due to Poch managing him before. He obviously wants to stay in Italy or go to London, also he probably doesn't enjoy working with Poch as he makes you 'work like a dog' as he put it and from what Roma fans have said to me he does not put in any effort as well as many other controversial things he has done at their club. Saints fans who are desperate for him to sign I am just saying I wouldn't get your hopes up.

With all the chatter about Osvaldo, there are a lot of people saying he doesn't want to come to Southampton, and many people saying that they don't want him, yet I've seen no evidence that says he will not come. Have I missed some kind of statement from Osvaldo saying he is not interested in Saints?

This kind of chatter always makes me laugh, as these people are talking from a perspective that's totally ignorant, and uninformed.

So what is the truth? It has been reported that Osvaldo's preferred move is to Inter or the Premier League. If the reports are true that he previously turned Saints down, then surely Nicola has managed to gauge Osvaldo's opinion about any potential move to Saints.

Why then, if this is true would Nicola Cortese waste his time going back to try to sign him again, if he was totally against a move to Saints?
Nicola being a fairly shrewd businessman would have originally gone in with a fairly low offer, and then gradually increased it till A) either they reach an agreement, or B) they fail to agree terms.

Lets be sensible. If Pablo Osvaldo wasn't interested in a Saints move, he wouldn't be talking personal terms for a second time with Saints.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

In an interview around a month ago, Osvaldo said he did not want to leave Italy and felt Roma were pushing him to sign for Southampton who he considered beneath him as they didn't want him to move to another Italian club which he considered to be breaking the rules set by FIFA regarding transfers. He wants to move to Inter Milan and has made no secret of that.

That interview is where the whole he doesn't want to join us saga has come from. Honestly I think he should just be allowed his move to Inter as we don't really want him here if he will unsettle players by not wanting to be here but still getting regular squad places. I think we need someone who thinks this is the right place for them.

Attitude is what has made Southampton so good and I think, although Osvaldo would be a huge leap in quality, he would damage morale too much to be worth a rumoured £15million.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, I understand what has been said, but why would Cortese have multiple discussions to try to sign him if he has no interest in signing for us and we are beneath him?

Any player has a duty to himself to do his best for his career, and would have preferences on any move, especially if it means moving countries. I would also hope that each player would take playing for his country into account especially with a world cup round the corner.

I just don't get the " We don't want Osvaldo" brigade.
If he signs for us the same people will be cheering him on when he scores for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

What makes you think we are actually in talks with him? It is in the papers but that doesn't mean it is true. All these Sources, sky, sky Italia are awful and made up to

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't doubt he is a talented player, but I don't believe the papers can be right. I think we have given up based on his statement and clear attitude issues. Of course we would cheer him if he did sign but I'd still be weary of behind the scenes damage he is capable of doing. £15million may be close to worth it for his quality, but his mouth reduces the value considerably.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would much rather put trust in Saints knowing what they are doing, compared to the media knowing what they are doing-especially the Italian media!

This is all starting to sound like the Wanyama transfer, with Inter taking the place of Cardiff!

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

So much gets mixed up in translation.

The whole picture is actually not that bad. He has basically said he'd like to stay in Italy at a top club if possible. He's not flat out rejected Saints (he totally rejected Wolfsburg), just said they wouldn't be his first choice mainly because he likes Italy and he wants to improve his chances to make the Italy WC squad.

He hasn't been disrespectful and said Saints are 'beneath' him. He's only said it's not his first choice. If he was going to slag us off, he would reject all offers from us. Not say maybe and consider us after putting us down! That would just be stupid.

Congrats to Ricky! We now have an international striker in our midst! This will put him in a perfect mindset for the WBA match! Hopefully we get another young versatile striker who can also play on the left/right too. Apparantly we're close to signing Obsvaldo but I'd rather sign a younger player who has the potential to be better than him like Morrata or maybe Zapata or I'd love Lacina Traore who would definetly be available for a cut price after Anzi announced they would be restructuring there squad! Wages could be an issue though

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We've had an international striker for ages.

Great England debut for Sir Rickie. let's get real though. Woy will drop him like a hot potato as soon as any other striker becomes available! He should be in the squad at least.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Unfortunately tend to agree with you Stevie. If RL can get off to a good start this year though Woy will have so much pressure on him that he might have to include him in the squad. Here's hoping, and heres hoping the likes of Shaw and Clyne get a look in too if they also play well.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I think Rickie was awesome last night, and that he's just put himself right in the frame for a regular spot.

He created more, had more chances, showed great vision in the few minutes he had, than wazza and the rest of them combined.

lol, I'm not saying he'll go to Rio, but I think he's impressed Woy enough to get another chance. Certainly better than Andy (caped) Caroll.

Agree0 Disagree0

Seeing as most of the squad seems to be repeatedly in it because the media seems to think we need them, I think he has to be given another chance. To score within such a short time, to nearly score another two times then is impressive for anyone on a debut. I think we will see him again.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rickie has to have another chance. The media will put pressure on him now. The man's been banging in goals left right and centre, then came on and scored for England instantly - and completely changed the game and could have had more. How can a headless chicken that runs straight into defenders like Welbeck, get in front of him. Carroll's just a target donkey. Rickie must be given the chance now and it's up to him whether he makes the World Cup squad. We haven't looked like winning a trophy since 1998 (and funnily enough may have if Le Tissier went) and there's a reason for that. Fair enough, the fat over-rated granny lover Rooney can score goals when he pulls his head out his ****, Sturridge may prove to be good, but it's all so 1 dimensional. I'm biased, but Rickie would be the first striker on my team sheet. Goals, assists, aerial ability, hold the ball, passion. Do any of the others have all that. NO!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree to the above poster. Rickie is very intelligent on and off the ball. He reads the game very well. I really do think hell have another crack.

Agree0 Disagree0

Great Rickie fan but I thought Welbeck had a good game and has a lot of pace. I think him and Rickie could play together with Rickie feeding him like he does J Rod. I really don't think you could call Welbeck a headless chicken.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not only did Rickie show what he can do, it is now very obvious Rooney is a problem in the England team. His constant expectation that he will always get the ball passed to him, even when he is closely marked and will end up giving the ball away, is undermining the play of some of the other players who are always trying to pass the ball to him (often sideways) rather than utilise it more productively. Roy needs to sort this out sharpish otherwise England are going nowhere.

So paper talk today linking us back with Sorensen from Bologna. Would like to see another quality CB in. Plus other paper talk saying we have bid 18+ for Osvaldo and will be paying him £50k a week. Both would improve the first 11.
On another note congrats to RL for showing the doubters last night (yet again!) that he is pure class.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Clyne right back, Shaw left back, Cork in midfield & Lambert up front. This would be nice to see.

I hope Clyne impresses this season. He can make the England right back slot his if he does, considering Walker is useless and Johnson. Don't get me started on Johnson.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Clyne does have a tendancey to go to sleep at one point in the game with his positioning. if he over comes that there is not reason why he shouldn't challenge Walker & Johnson who I agree is shocking defensively

Agree0 Disagree0

Ron davies would have been proud of that header
