I wish people would get off Forster's back. We have a defensive record which is second to none in the PL and still some people arn't happy. All keepers will have inconsistencies its just they are more under the spotlight than any other positions.

Get a life !!

I don't get this ' get a life quote ' Forster has positioning problems that is not rocket science. He is a great shot stopper but never seems to control his 6 yard box, I think Gardos went to clear the ball because Fraser didn't commit himself.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree to both the above posts. Forster is certainly not the best keeper in the EPL I think that he has improved over the last 6 months. Playing every week in the hardest league in the world and having the best goals against stats will be building his confidence which in turn will make him a better keeper. I think that we need to back him as we do every other player at Saints

I agree TeeJaySaint, I am sure he will be this finished article that we want him to be. I just don't understand how people can keep on saying how great he is and quoting stats about lowest goals against in the PL. The main reason for the great defensive record we have is mainly due to the system we play and our superb back line and what they have done to protect Fraser, when you look at our opponents shots on target against us it is the lowest in the league by miles. Fraser Forster is getting there but some way to go yet in my humble opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

The problem is his illusion of being a good keeper due to clean sheet stats. Same as joe hart when they win the league after he came back from Birmingham. The defence made him look good.

Forster is similar to hart in that era, they're both a bit flappy in te 6 yard box, especially under threat from set pieces when the bal is swung in. Hart had improved slowly, so hopefully fraser can too.

After following the results this afternoon I was saying to myself a draw at Newcastle will keep us in third but sort of expecting us to get beat with all the players we have missing and thinking, well we will still be in 4th if we lose. We were not brilliant tonight but who cares we won, however 16 points out of 18 when all the media and pundits were convinced we would start falling away in the league is good enough for me. I would imagine the cup game on Saturday will be a sell out by Wednesday to get our part time support on the database because if they don't get on it they will struggle to get a ticket for a home game for the rest of the season or ever !!

Great result against NUFC especially when you take into account that we had our best 3 players missing. Let's hope that Elia carries on scoring. He could be the answer as far as another striker is concerned.

Yeah what a fantastic performance by Elia and Pelle with his hold up play. the thought of Elia and Mané both playing on the wings at some point later in the season seems an exciting prospect.

Agree0 Disagree0

How unlucky is pelle at the mo! How many times has he hit the woodwork lately. not doing my fantasy points any good either. He still puts in a shift tho. it will come good. We march on!

Fantastic result. Would've been happy with a point after such a tough week and so many key players missing.

It wasn't always pretty - hopefully the fluid, attacking football will return in time for the home games with Palace and Swansea coming up - but they got the job done, banked the points.

Elia was a revelation. Knew he was pretty quick and had some skills, but I was surprised at how strong he was. He muscled his way out of trouble in a way Mane and Tadic never can. If he can keep his head (and history doesn't do him too many favours in that respect) he could turn out to be a hell of a signing.

I thought Harry Reed was excellent as well. He's really stepped up whenever the boss has called on him and I think he's got a very good chance of making it as a top Premier League player. Energetic, feisty but with a decent tactical appreciation; calm and unfussy on the ball. Quietly impressive.

42 points. Staying up. It's almost like the professional experts are no different from any old random person.

Agree0 Disagree0

It was a very professional performance from a player the majority of us, myself included, were not sure about. Two shots on goal and two goals, not a bad way to start your account at Southampton!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes must agree Reed looked very good and is gradually getting more and more confident as each game he play's. Reminds me of when we had to play Shaw too often in his earlier day's but he grew and matured very quickly.
Believe we still need cover for Clyne and a backup keeper who will be prepared to sit on the bench most of the time!

Agree0 Disagree0

Not alway's been Pella's best supporter but must say he was superb today and played very well.

What was panning out be a solid first half performance was ruined by that Newcastle equaliser. There's two ways to look at this one, both suggest to me a lack of communication between Clyne, Gardos and Forster. Fault A lies with Gardos, because from the replays it looked like an easy gather for Forster who had come out to meet it, but neither Gardos or Clyne seem to be acknowledging the keepers call. Fault B would be Forster for coming off his line because Clyne gets in front of Gouffran so even if the ball deflects from Gardos' attempted clearance it should still be kept out by Forster.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Any situation where Forster has to come off his line is always a white knuckle ride - he's been slow and indecisive all season when it comes to leaving the safety of his six yard box. You'd hope the longer he plays with this defence, the better the understanding will become.

To be fair, it was a freak goal. I doubt Gardos could've done that again in 100 attempts. He read the play perfectly, he got across, cleared towards the touchline and just got unlucky. It happens. Not often, but there we go. He played pretty well otherwise.

I think it was a bit of bad luck all round for their goal but I still think Forster is too slow to react not just on the goal but in general throughout the whole game. I thought Pelle was brilliant and our new boy looks a box of tricks. 42 points and 2 weeks till the next PL game, happy days.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm afraid to say that's Forster's ball all day long. A man his size should dominate his box and put that ball straight back down the pitch where it came from!. But saying that he and the whole team played really well and looked very confident on the ball.

Agree0 Disagree0

Coaching staff need to work on forsters positional play and communication he was clear favourite for that ball, clyney had done excellent job by getting back at guaffran, gardos was in place but all went horribly wrong due to no communication

Agree0 Disagree0

Forster defo made a call that he was coming for it

Watch Clyne, he's all the proof you need. He's heard the call, he's got goal side of Gouffran and is just holding him back, buying a bit of time for Forster to get to the ball first. Clyne's not trying to attack the ball, if Forster hadn't made the call and had stayed back Clyne would and should have been attacking the ball, making sure he was there first and not worrying about slowing Gouffran down.

Gardos clearly didn't hear the call (or wasn't paying attention?) but, he should have been aware of what Clyne and Forster were doing, if Forster wasn't coming for the ball Clyne should always have been there first, knocking the ball AWAY from the attacking player, not into their path as Gardos did. I'm not sure what Gardos was thinking there but he shouldn't have been going for that ball unless he was clearly ahead of Clyne and Gouffran with enough time to kick it out instead of sliding - otherwise leave it

it was unlucky, 1 in a 100 chance of happening, which is a shame 'cause he's been solid just lately

Not convinced with the explanation, Forster should have taken that ball long before Gardos arrived, he was slow off his line as usual. Anyway it doesn't matter we won and we move on but I'm sure the goalkeeping coach will mention it gingerly to Fraser and maybe make him watch it through.
