According to newspapers, we are set to offer David Marshall of Cardiff a premier league lifeline as we want him to challenge boruc to a first team place. The goalkeeper, who was outstanding for Cardiff last season, and was voted as the second best goalkeeper in the premier league couldn't keep Cardiff from getting relegated. I personally would love to have him ini our squad to challenge boruc for a staring place because not only is Marshall quality, but our backup when boruc was injured was very poor and that was one of our downsides last year. If true, what would you think of this? Would you like to have him in the squad?

If this is true I would like this to happen.
I thought Marshall was one of the best keepers in the league last season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Marshall would be an excellent signing, great goalkeeper who prevented Cardiff from conceding so many more goals last season

Would be an excellent signing. Is a really good goalie and we have some cracking coaches. Would he be happy playing as second though or is he going to prefer regular matches.

I'd rather not sign someone just as back up, it's something Cortese said about managers - that if you're not continuously improving on what you have you risk going backwards, that applies to players too. To me there's no point in paying out a few million for someone to sit on the bench and just come in, in the event of an injury when inevitably they'll end up like Forte and Barnard when we do need someone better

Dropping Boruc might seem harsh on someone who's done well for us but that's the price of improving. Buy better than Boruc, use him for backup and loan Gazzaniga out for a season or two. If Marshall is a genuine improvement, take him, if not leave him, paying more in the short term for someone better will save us money in the long term as well

Agree0 Disagree0

He was Boruc's no. 2 up at Celtic. Not sure he would want to sign if he thought he was coming in as a no. 2 again. Stats look good though. Question is, is he good enough to knock Boruc off the top spot?

Agree0 Disagree0

He wouldn't be back up, I think he'd start ahead of Boruc

Agree0 Disagree0

If true, I think this is one worth exploring. I get previous poster's thoughts about bringing in a 'better' but we need competition. Marshall had a great season and hopefully wouldn't break the bank to get him in. We looked a lot weaker with Gazza or Kelv playing last year and priority has to be finding someone new to step in.

Looking forward to seeing if koemans barca links bring in any tasty loan deals

Who are you talking about? Both Rafinha & Deulofeu will be staying at the Camp Nou this season and Barcelona don't have any other free players available for loan.
I don't believe loans would benefit Southampton either, Everton were extremely successful last season but thinking about it they've lost two of their first eleven. Barry and Lukaku were vital for many of their wins last season and regardless of Martinez's ability I don't know whether his team's form can carry on and let them perform as greatly without those two players.
Purchasing or a loan with an option to buy are the only sustainable options in football.

Agree0 Disagree0

^^make that 3 with Deulofeu, players like Tello or Bojan could be signed on loan with a view to a permanant deal, I doubt Rafinha will start ahead of Raktic, Busqeuts, Inest, Xavi, would he? So he may want more game time, loans with a view to permanant could be good for us as long as we sign them after, would much rathered Osvaldo was only here on loan!

Agree0 Disagree0

Xavi has signed a deal with a club in Qatar and so won't be playing for Barcelona next year, therefore Rafinha will be needed. Tello is a possibility but every player has said they wish to stay at Barcelona and would do everything to avoid a tranfer. Cesc & Xavi were different but all other players have shown their commitment.
Bojan is not good enough, he has shown glimpse of greatness but has never been consistent enough to do it regularly, he slips out of games and can't hold down a first team spot. 5 goals and 6 assists in 32 games is not an imrovement.

Agree0 Disagree0

That's true but at Saints we took a 26 tear old Ricky Lambert and turned him into a top premier league player, point we're good at getting the best out of players and he's exactly the sort of player we could make great again IMO, Barca, also they'll probably sign a replacement Xavi and if they do Rafinha would become available, if they want to stay at Barca then a loan deal is more favorable to them is it not, then they may want to stay after playing a season at the club, you never know

Lost, even though I play those games, I wasn't writing this because of the games, I was writing it because I read in a newspaper (I don't know if you are allowed to state the newspaper). It's also online if you search it on google.

Given our new management situation maybe our new kit could be white with a red strip running down the centre. Wasn't there a dutch team with something similar?! Lol
