What's happened about guidetti? Rumours seem to have died down, he'd be a bit of a risk though as he would either make a cracking strike partnership with pelle because of their feyenoord experience, but hasn't reached the same standard with city, which may be down to low game time but I don't know.

Kind of feel like we've missed out a bit after seeing QPR sign Caulker and Stoke sign Bojan, feel like both would've been fantastic signings for us, good to here about interest in Forster as he's a top keeper, we need another CB too I think Rojo would be good as he can play both LB and CB, someone like Eric Dier would be good too, like hearing that we're interested in Nathan Redmond too as he has a big future another striker would be good too, someone young and up and coming would be good!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Bojan was completely out of the blue, not sure many clubs would have even thought to go for him. All sorts of clubs have missed out with that steal. And some reports claim we were never interested in Caulker with it just being paper talk. Not sure if that's true but seems as likely as any other situation. Plus QPR will pay him some ludicrous sum to play each week so we wouldn't have been competing. Luckily FFP will (hopefully) destroy QPR at the end of this season. Frankly they deserve it.

did we think that putting in a silly offer to Celtic would just be accepted? Was there no negotiating going on, Hasn, t Mr read heard of picking up the telephone and doing the deal with his opposite number!! This is the worst sort of "buying" it is so poor I am lost for words. If we are not careful they will just give him a new contract with a huge pay rise or even worse heaven forbid SOMEONE ELSE WILL BUY HIM! How about some urgency.

I can quite see why some of the Eds. get annoyed with our site. Some of your comments are just plain idiotic. People who claim to know how to complete multi million pound deals for players and have, no doubt, not managed to get a pocket money raise for a couple of years.

I used to like a bit of banter on this page and found the majority of fellow Saints supporters pretty knowledgeable but the silliness of many of the posts is now out of order. Trust you all enjoy getting more and more silly over the coming weeks. As they say in Dragons Den-"I'm out!"

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Saint Martin, could not have said it better.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said and I don't really rate any of them anyway, especially bojan. He was a big hype over nothing

Agree0 Disagree0

Yh I don't get everyones problem with starting the bidding low, we want to get the best deal for the club so we're not just going to throw money at them

afraid you are missing the point! In this type of market place, if you decide who you want, you have to move quickly and quietly. Putting in silly offers and letting everyone else know what you are doing is mad.

Agree0 Disagree0

Saint Martin and chisdownj you two think your like football Oracle's or something!! lol

People don't know what Southampton are doing though franklong. They know what Southampton are rumoured to be doing by the tabloid press who seem to be in an endless loop of random nonsense rumours.

Negotiations in football are not as easy as you think. You start low and haggle down to a price you feel is worthwhile for a player. Then you have to handle contract talks with both player and agent (the agent looking for a huge fee and the biggest club he can to flaunt at other potential player clients) which will lead to hold ups. Then there's a lot of bureaucracy and legal stuff to deal with on top which makes transfers both a time consuming and costly endeavour.

Most of the deals which have come through this window have been a long time in the making so far you get the impression. Southampton had to have a rethink when players started kicking up a fuss and prices started going up. Keep the faith, this board is not stupid, Reed was a large part of the system under Cortese as well don't forget.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure what Les Reed has done to justify so much stick to be honest!

Anyway, there are far, far, far better defenders than Caulker out there for the same price, so actually very glad we didn't sign him. I think the other options mentioned here are far better.

Bojan was hyped up so much when he was younger but never really fulfilled his potential, he is quite an average player, again no big loss.

Redmond, could be handy, if managed correctly. I think he has great potential to develop, but also not entirely sure is that much better than we have.

i am a saints fan, and i'm getting worried about the lack of high profile signings.
we look like a plate of vegetables waiting for some meat to make us look more interesting.

we need something to make people sit up and go wow, we have all this money, why can't we try our luck with a few players like walcott, rodwell, sinclair.
were we really interested in caulker? how come we let that gem sign for QPR. come on saints, pull your finger out. 3 weeks to go

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sorry Cyberchris but apart from Walcott (never going to happen) I hope SFC have better transfer targets in mind than Rodwell or Sinclair. I don't think either of those would overwhelm us. Just my opinion of course.

In total agreement with your views Bermuda,so refreshing for someone to be so positive.

Agree0 Disagree0

Anewhope, I couldn't agree more,
We have the funds and a fantastic manager with a great background in football that surely could attract better players than Caulker and co?

Agree0 Disagree0

When I was in business (years ago), if I had acted this slowly I would have been out of a job very quickly. Can we have some action please, go and buy a player, or is it just that we don't know how to do our job Mr reed!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry franklong but I think this kind of business can cost you millions if you get it wrong, look at Osvaldo, we don't want that to happen again do we. Harry the Hood gets away with it somehow. Never been able to understand that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with the OP, but the players you mentioned with the exception of Theo, wouldn't improve our team [Theo will never, ever happen by the way]

We just need one or two truely quality signings and we can push forward

I am tiered of reading these negative post that are constantly blaming the board or owners for not checking with every Saints supporter about what they should do in running the club, they have moved SFC into the PL and given (me) a longtime supporter much pride for the way we play and the players we develop. The board is once again under the microscope this time of year, but I trust they will get most of it right and keep us moving forward. Here are some of the questions I read from the detractors of the board -

selling off our star players - this I think was started from NC leaving. This was KL decision, and it caused a domino effect. MP decided to move on and players saw a good time to jump ship to the promise land of excess and money which was going to happen eventually. The Board negotiated early in the transfer window to sell some of the want away players at excellent values. We hire a world class coach and buy two of the best players in the dutch league.

We should get our incoming transfers business done early, pay more money if we have to! get this "Marquee " signing in now to prove we are ambitious -

Are some of you new to the PL? clubs our size with our ambitions to buy players that bigger clubs want will mean we will have a long drawn out transfer season. These players will wait for the big clubs to make their moves and see if they can get in a CL team. If not we have a good a chance as anyone to attract good players. I hope we go down to the wire and pull of some amazing signings for high profile players that did not get snapped up by the CL teams. I guess the "we need players now! at all cost!" will be moaning the whole time until the window shuts!

there are many other derogatory comment made about the board and their lack of leadership like -

having lack of ambition.
not being tough on players that want to leave.
not spending enough money on players.
dragging their feet with new transfers.
hiring a hockey manager. blah blah blah.

STOP worrying about things you have little information about! Enjoy this new phase of our Club, New manager, new players, new exciting rumors of talented players coming to SFC, players stepping up from the academy to become the next Bale or Shaw.

I am prepared to positively support SFC as they reinvent SFC every few years. If we continue to do well in the league we will always loose players to mega rich clubs, we will always be seen as a stepping stone for some. RK is an excellent fit in this regard as he is well versed in the rebuilding of a team that is decimated for it talents every year or two. He rebuilds with the intentions of trying to win the league not just be in it. I hope one day we will do an Atletico Madrid and surprise the big boys before they dismantle us. MARCH ON SAINTS!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Bermuda saint, I suggest if you're tired of hearing others' perspectives, which they're entitled to, then don't read these pages. Ed's can correct me if I'm wrong, and please do, but this is the whole point of this site to discuss/predict/share/reflect (some call it moan) about saints' transfer rumours, whether the lack of or not, the key word here is 'entitlement' we are all entitled to our opinions.
I also think you're missing some vital info about those (including myself) discontent, the hypocrisy involved, we were told 'no players would be sold. '
I'm not naive enough to think that this would be the case, but to say it publicly and then, well you know the rest. For me at the moment it just feels like the wheels have come off and we need to re-stabilise the club and ensure no more leave and we do, we actually do sign some quality signings in other positions needed soon as we need time to embed these players and that time is running out for the start of the season.
I love the club and it's fans, it becomes an emotive subject so I understand others' perspectives and welcome them.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jul 2014 17:53:13
I agree here. To put down fans for their opinion is ridiculous when they are in possession of as much info as you are.
We are seeing other teams appear to be pushing forward whilst we are left with little information other than what has happened recently. We have lost some good players owing to albeit good business and AT THE MOMENT we have a pot of money that doesn't appear to being used. Yes the fans are impatient. Does that mean they have no faith? No. Does it mean they are scared or nervous about what is happening. Yes. I have supported Saints for nearly my entire 40 yrs and have seen the best and worst of times. I will keep hoping that the board knows what they are doing. However we have seen many in the EPL who haven't. On the face of it, hiring the hockey expert is odd. On the face of it we are this year's whipping boys with a new rumour about a player sale every five minutes. This is unsettling.
That people are upset or scared with little information is natural.

Agree0 Disagree0

Firstly I would like to point out we never got told that noone would be sold, they said players would only be sold if it made sense to the club i. e. we were getting more than their worth (which clearly we have)

secondly, the reason it seems as though other teams are doing deals while we aren't is because we are focused on saints. we are effectively comparing 1 clubs transfer deals to 19 others. look at any other clubs rumour forums they all have the same post. 'hurry up and sign someone blah blah blah' we have brought in 2 good signing already we will be fine

finally, you can't tell someone they don't have the right to post that they find other posts annoying by telling them people can post whatever they want. makes no sense

Luke Shaw. "We are playing massive teams like Real Madrid. Last season, no disrespect to Southampton, but we would have been playing Championship and League One teams and now to come to the U. S. and play against teams like that is something I dreamed of when I was younger. " He's forgotten about Leverkusen!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm wondering where all this world-class 'scouting' set-up has gone? I know it's still pretty early, but the two transfers in have come because of Koeman, and we're now linked with two more Feyenoord players. Where are these long period scouted players we've monitored for months?

Agree0 Disagree0

And all the top quality players banging on the door? Or was that just the top quality players who want to go?

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jul 2014 14:47:56
Do you think Cortese employed and recruited all these players and managers the last 5 years all on his own? No he didn't. Reed and others had a huge imput.

The lack of signings is probably due to us aiming 'too high' as it were but what's the point in just buying average players just to make up the numbers when you have a youth system like ours? Be patient saints fans the signings will come.

Agree0 Disagree0

Reed has a poor record as a manager but a good record as a behind-the-scenes man. Here are some highlights:

2002-2004 Technical Director of the FA, authored the coaching manual (what you think of this depends on your opinion of the FA, I suppose).

2007-2008 Director of Football at Fulham.

Before and in between these appointments he had a coaching and managerial career, but was generally not well thought of as a manager.

So, it's not a glorious history, but it probably stacks up well enough to other people in his post at other second-tier premiership clubs. I'm not entirely convinced by the man myself, but he is well-regarded and experienced, especially compared to other people who have tried to run the footballing operation of the club in the past. Lowe, Wilde, and Crouch--all businessmen with no football experience--come to mind.

Agree0 Disagree0

Who's to say we haven't been building up dossiers on Pelle and Tadic for months? In fact, I'd hope we had extensive information on two of the top performers in the Eredivisie. In the end, of course, it's Koeman who decides which of all the players we've ever scouted he actually wants to sign, and he wanted these two, partly because he was already familiar with them. Nothing wrong with that.

Those signings where more from the 'Cortese side' Due to his Italy connections, same with Papa Waigo and Guly. He had connections with thier agents, also Mayuka was his signing as he used to watch young boys games when he was in switzerland. They worked out well didn't they. TBF I think and hope Ramirez can take the league by storm this season with Lallana out the picture! COYR

plan B will be a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 depending on how you look at it.

Agree0 Disagree0

From seeing us against Swindon, I think we need 2 wingers. Obviously didn't see Tadic play but I don't think he's an put and out pacy winger, more of a Lallana. We need to get the ball in to Pelle quickly and think we need better than Mayuka and Sam McQueen.

It looks like this Rojo rumour is starting to gain some momentum. Being reported by quite a few rags and websites today. Would love this to be true. It would be a massive signing for us. He could kill two birds with one stone too, by providing CB cover when required and play left back while Targett gains experience. Come on Les, get him on board.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

IMO even if this was to go through, we would still need a further CB - Jos and Maya just don't cut it in the EPL.

Watched against Swindon and thought we lacked quality for a team 8th in the prem. Obviously a few missin tadic, wanyama, lovren etc. But think we may be struggling next year of we don't open that cheque book soon and mould a team together.

However saying that thinks looking ok on rumours front. I think we need, GK CB x2 LB winger and another striker. Think Boruc did very well bar a few mistakes last season however wouldn't say no to either Marshall or FF

My team (if rumours are true (obviously not all bit still))

FF/Marshall
Clyne virj vlaar Rojo
Spider (if still here) cork
J rod tadic Redmond
Pelle

. That team would achieve top half I believe.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I like the look of the Back line but you have missed out all of our up and coming talent from the academy. I love seeing a team with at least 2 home grown youngsters featuring. Ward Prowse, Reed, Chambers, Mqueen. These guys are all top notch and we need to put our trust in them.

Southampton will sign Forster. He wants premier league football. Nobody offers big money at the start, but Southampton and Celtic have a very good business relationship and have had ever since Claus Lundekvams testimonial. But mainly because we paid over the odds for Wanyama even when his agents were kicking up a fuss. They also appreciate how professional southampton are when it comes to transfers and not going to the media every time they place a bid. With them signing Craig Gordon who is still a very good goalkeeper they were preparing for Forsters exit. Fee to be around £9m with some of the fee going to Newcastle.
