Really unlucky tonight. Didn't deserve to go away with nothing. Fantastic effort from the lads and great to see Forster having a worldy of a game. Hope we see much more of this form. This is the sort of raw potential we bought him for. ChrisdownJ I hope this gives you a bit of comfort that there is a potentially fantastic keeper in him.

I must give credit where it is due and Forster played very well but wasn't that why we paid 10 million for him ? I wouldn't actually call it a worldy but it was an excellent performance by him and just hope it is not just a one off. What has happened to Tadic, he looked very ordinanary again last night. I got worried when Yoshida came on, he seemed panicked when needing to clear the ball and just don't think he is good enough at this level. Pelle was very good again with his hold up play and his lay offs were great, I just think he is a bit frustrated. It was a good performance but we just don't seem to have any fire power going forward, losing Toby was the game loser as he was outstanding along with Wanyama. I think it is going to be a reality check over the coming weeks and I just hope a good result against Sheffield United in the cup might get our confidence back and also make it 2 matches away from an automatic entry into Europe. We could lose the final and still qualify I believe if the winners qualify for the Champions League. Not sure on this so anybody know what happens on this topic ?

No, the FA Cup runners up qualify for Europe if the winners have qualified through different means.

Unless it's changed this season and I missed it, the League Cup runners up just get their bus fare home - the reward of a European place goes back to the league if the winners don't need it: 6th place becomes a qualifying position.

Thanks Querty I am sure you're right but would have been nice wouldn't it. You have jogged my memory about the FA Cup when we lost to Arsenal we went into the Europa didn't we. Just seems a bit strange that it applies to one cup competition and not the other. Anyway thanks for the info and let's just hope we win it. It maybe that one of the teams we play in the semi ( if we get there ) might play a weakened side if they are still involved in the top four chase and still being in the Champions League. We could do with a change of fortune at the moment couldn't we ?

If it wasn't for bad luck Saints would've had no luck tonight. Deserved at least a point but the writing was on the wall once the side went down to 10 men. 9 if you consider that Mayuka doesn't actually count as a player.

All credit to Forster - by far and away his best game for the club and looking a lot more like the top class keeper he was billed as.

Terrible referee. Two Saints players were kicked out of the match. No bookings for any Arsenal players - only 7 fouls given against them all night.

Real problems for the Man United game on Monday. Alderweireld, Cork, Tadic, Scheiderlin must all be major doubts. As if the midfield resources aren't spread thin enough, a booking for Wanyama (for being a Southampton player) means he's one more yellow card away from a ban.

Not all bad news. Spurs and Everton faltered again. Realistically, I think they're Saints' competition this season in a race to better last season's 8th place finish.

One more comment. yes Mayuka was awful, did not seem to understand the game plan at all - once he lost the ball he did not run back into a defensive cover position, unless he was told to flap about wide left. I would have bough Pelle back into mid and left Mayuka in the center circle for the last 10 mins.
Or played Reed or Gardos of course. At least let them realise why they turn up to training each day.

Andre Mariner gave very little away and when he did it was in Arsenal's favour, but it was definitely bad luck which cost a point from this one. We're still in a fantastic league position but the truth is with these injuries stacking up and potential suspensions of Pelle, Wanyama and Schneiderlin to come our best opportunity for success is from the league cup. We probably don't have the squad depth, particularly now, to keep form for a top 4 finish. Plenty of the season left, but we all know Champions League football was a pipe dream and at least 5th and 6th place is up for grabs.

Why did the bad luck of injuries have to hit us right in the middle of the game!? Forster played terrifically and of all the clean sheets we had got this season, his performance deserved one of them. Had we not lost Cork, Alderweireld and Tadić then we may have even got something on the counter in the end. Definitely going to be an interesting line-up for the United game at this rate.

Les Reed has said that we won't be doing much in Jan other than 'protecting our interests' - not that that means much.
