So now that Jose has returned to chelsea does that mean that Pochetinios " Friendship " will allow us to take Lukaku either on loan or sign or does it mean that Luke Shaw will go to chelsea? Yes I know that the don said he won't be moving but would it be a good deal Shaw for Lukaku? Having said that Lukaku is a lot like drogba and we know how well he and Jose did together so maybe a swap for Torres instead? Who would you rather have a left back or a new striker?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Doesn't really mean either. Cortese would not allow Shaw to go and Shaw himself says Southampton is the right place for him for the next few years.
However Mourinho may want to hold Lukaku and raise him to be his new Drogba type.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mourinho has said that he wants to keep Lukaku

And surely Torres' wages will be too high for us!

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh yeh then we can have fox as or left back yippee

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku will be in the worlds top five strikers in 3 years. He will never get swapped for someone like Shaw, he is worth at least £25-30 million now Lukaku and Shaw is about £10-15 million tops!

I've just realised all these fans of ours thinking we are competing for a champions league place next year are going to be the same ones who call for the manager to be sacked after 2 defeats in a row or if we finish like about 11th or bottom half next season. Grow up people and start being realistic. 6th will be outstanding 8th will be amazing 10th will be decent and staying up will be ok. COYR!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Next season surely the target has to be getting close to a European slot. We need top 7 really to justify the spend we could be making.

Agree0 Disagree0

Top 7 means we have to finish above one of the top 7 this year. Would be great but I can't see it happening this season. 8th maybe as that's 'the best of the rest', could happen. Saying that though Everton could struggle after losing Moyes.

Oh and before we get the 'you're deluded fans' comments, you'll find MOTD pundits predicted us as 8th next season.

Lamela- he's a 3rd party ownership, and he would cost 30m+, plus Man Utd, Madrid, Barca, City will all be involved in a bidding war

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yes, you read Eds comments on other clubs sites-but what is your point?

I see distinct similarities between the Lamela situation and the one that existed for Gaston. DO NOT underestimate NC's ability to cut through such situations.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Poch being argentinian and offering him first team football and Cortese's vision could put us in the driving seat though, fingers crossed

Agree0 Disagree0

So because NC is some magician you'd get him for £10m less than everyone else? Never mind the fact that the other clubs are several leagues above you in terms of quality.
You manage to 'poach' Gaston from who? Spurs, Liverpool? Neither have Champions League football, and Liverpool doesn't even have EL now.

Agree0 Disagree0

I just read your post below Saint Martin and I don't doubt that Southampton could be an attractive prospect for Lamela and the promise of first team football and a a project could convince him, however my point was simply that I don't believe you'd pay £30m for him. Simples.

Agree0 Disagree0

Spurs, Liverpool, Inter and I think Juve? So yes we did beat Championleague clubs to get him thanks mate :)

Agree0 Disagree0

If the club thought he was worth £30m, they could and would pay it-simples.

However, there is a tendency for Italian clubs, media and agents working in those countries to try and get an auction going and that will fail with NC.

You only need to look at posts from other clubs supporters to note how envious they are of many of the high quality young players we now have at the club. These will be kept together and added to with players as good, if not better. If that means paying £30m for an exceptional young player it would happen, but the club is pretty expert at picking out talent and will only pay what they think is correct.

Just remember the negative comments about the waste of money for Rodriguez not long ago. Now the same clubs supporters are pretty envious. £30m is a bigger shout, but it could happen.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't think we "poached" Gaston from anyone. We identified him as a player we wanted, and we signed him.
Comments about signing for a CL club are a little silly. Not everyone who does so gets to play eg. Fabregas! Now, if you are a young, talented player maybe you would think hard about that and also consider a club where you would play and be part of a team developing for the next few years and trust for CL football when you are in your mid 20s, rather than end up a Barca B player!
Seen just the same sort of comments from Chelsea supporters trying to justify why Shaw should sign for them-then they go and ruin it by saying how he could learn from watching Cole!

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Regardless of playing time etc. I honestly don't think your going to start spending £30m on a single player. Wasn't Gaston a record transfer for you at £14m of something? {Ed001's Note - to be fair, the full cost could be much higher as that is just the amount paid to his previous club. With him having multiple ownership, no one will know for sure how much was paid in total.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair enough Ed. Just seems a bit of a leap to me. We're all entitled to our own opinion and I'd be quite happy to be proved wrong. I think Lamela is a great talent and to be able to see him play week in and out in the EPL would fantastic both for Southampton and the quality of the league. {Ed001's Note - I would be shocked if he does sign, but more because of the ownership issues than the cost.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Not worth 30 mill in my opinion sorry

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks Ed. , your point is well made.

Prices for players increase as a club moves up the ranking. You can't expect to produce all your own players or find bargains continuously, certainly not if you have a project with rapid improvement fundamental. Past record transfer fees are not valid. (The sad news about the recent death of Ron Davies included he was then a "record transfer fee" for Saints at £55k. )

Cortese has been very successful at developing the club faster than anyone expected. IF he thought it essential to now make that sort of investment he would do so. How much would a new stadium cost? And that option is still on the table.

Saints do not let anyone know what their plans are until they are secured, and then the details are limited (what did we actually pay for Rodriguez?) but it does not mean the club will accept 14th in the EPL as its position in life.

At this time of year we have the normal confusion re Euros and Sterling, agents/clubs/media escalating values of players etc. I would suggest the only certainty is Cortese will out there competing to sign the players he wants, not wanting to overpay but not wanting to accept second best. Think he might pay £30m for a player who in 5 years time could be worth a lot more (bankers do that sort of thing), don't see him chasing Rooney though where the maths are reversed!

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm really glad your on 'our side', Saint Martin. Excellent and articulate posts.

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually, SaintGazza, it is really a cunning plan NC started with the signing of Yoshida to draw TV commentators from the Far East.

He always knew he could then have them trying to describe a move involving Lallana, Lamela, Lambert and finished off by Lionel!

What a sense of humour the man has. LOL

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

I understand what your saying Saint Martin and I totally agree about how the prices for players increase the higher you finish.

My point is that once you start spending £30m on a player and showing that you have the financial backing to do so, prices for other players you go for will increase.

At the moment you don't necessarily have the financial power to do so. Yes as many of your fans like to say, you have the 5th richest owner in Europe or w/e but your club doesn't have the required turnover to support extravagant expenditure until you increase your stadium capacity and become a regular fixture in the PL.

Hunter

Agree0 Disagree0

Think you have a point Hunter but not well founded.

Yes, we know all about the Fair Play stitch up by the "big" clubs. It was Cortese who did most to try and stop it! He was unable to educate enough other clubs to see what it would mean. But the end result is it will make NC even more determined to fulfil his objective and he made it clear that he would make certain the Trust still supports what he wants to do.

It is really all about time lines. Yes, revenue will need to be increased and plans are there to do this, including increased stadium capacity. Saints will not wait for this before strengthening the side. What would be the point of having more capacity if the side was not successful and we couldn't sell the seats?
I don't see expenditure of £30m on a young player must be extravagant. £30m on a 20 year old Lionel Messi would be a pretty good investment! (Not saying that would happen. ) There could equally be benefit in then attracting players to the club who might have been reluctant to join "little old Saints". (Believe this is not new-remember Kevin Keegan?) Besides, £30m has been produced out of thin air and no-one knows if this is a real figure yet. But £40-£50m for a 26/27 year old who has a problem staying on the field certainly would be extravagant!

OK, we are excited (maybe over)that the club is supposed to be examining such possibilities, but it is worth considering that when a club starts thinking about how it will challenge for a top 6 spot in the EPL it is realistic about what this means.
I think Laudrup made a similar point recently.
I remember last summer having a discussion with one of the Eds. who was suggesting Saints should know their place! Well, I think Saints will decide that, not let others decide it for us. Do not assume because we are newly returned to the Premiership we have anything to learn about football finance. Cortese may not be liked by some other clubs Directors but he is generally admired as one of the most astute businessmen currently within the EPL.
Will we be a fixture in the EPL? Well, we were in the past and the club is now much better managed and financed, so I expect so. Apart from experience in the EPL for some of our young players, there are only two significant areas we need to remedy to be really successful and the management is well aware of these and working to do so. If that took £30m for a player who could be a missing link it would happen-but no, it doesn't mean it will. We just like to enjoy the fact that it could, and might!

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't doubt it's possible and as I said I'd be more than happy if he came. One of the ed's actually said £30m.
Side Note: I don't think it's likely that FFP will be enforced. The possibility of a break-away pan European league and there's currently a legal appeal which could put a major spanner in the works.

Now that Mourinho has returned to Chelsea maybe we will sign Lukaku, Pochettino and Mourinho are good friends?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It is perfectly possible especially seeing as Chelsea are chasing the signing of more strikers including apparently trying for Wayne Rooney. Plus Mourinho and Pochettino's relationship as you mentioned is very good.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would have thought Lukaku is the sort of player Mourinho would want to keep ie. a young Drogba. More likely to stick with him rather than Ba or Torres!

When do you think Saints will unveil their first summer signing?

Saints Matt

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think they will all come through in one spurt late this month. We are supposedly going to make all our signings by July 1st (well we're planning to anyway according to Pochettino). Therefore I think, knowing our club, they will most likely be unveiled when the team returns to training and could well have already had some completed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't believe the rules allow signings before July 1st. May get agreements with players and clubs before then but if the signing has to be after July 1st I think any announcement would be made early July.
Saints don't normally announce signings until they are final-we are not Liverpool!

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

You can make signings between windows as you can employ new people at any point. You just can't get them registered to play outside of the windows I believe.

Agree0 Disagree0

We may wait to announce them on the first of July though, I hope Astori as it's the biggest priority!

Agree0 Disagree0

Saint Martin of course you can!

e. g. Ricky van Wolfswinkle was signed by Norwich mid-season despite still playing for SCP.

e. g. Gotze signing for Bayern despite still playing for Borussia Dortmund who they were to meet in the CL final.

It's bad business etiquette, but certainly not beyond the rules.

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe signings will be released with the new kit?

players we could sighn

davide astori (CB) £12million

eric lamella (RM) £18 million

hernandez (ST) £16 million

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Utter nonsense. This has already been posted and I sincerely doubt us signing all 3. Their is a chance with Lamela because our interest has been made relatively known.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lamela has 3rd party ownership issues. Would cost £30m+ and Utd, Barca, Madrid and City would be involved in a bidding war.

Schalke have apparently put an £18million price tag on Papadopoulos who has been interesting Southampton. While he would be a quality signing I think their are better ways of spending £18million. {Ed001's Note - he has injury issues, which led to Chelsea refusing to meet the asking price.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Liverpool want him apparently

Adrian signing for Westham today, another one bites the dust.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Looking at their rumour site it's the Real Betis goal Keeper that they are signing. Weren't we on about the striker?

Agree0 Disagree0

They'd do quite well to be getting a keeper of that kind of level on a free transfer.

Wow what a person you are seeing as we are not interested in adrian from real betis

for the last time. WE ARE NOT SIGNING ERIK LAMELA!!!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

How do you know? I admit I am very sceptical about this rumour and don't believe it's going to happen but you definitely don't know we aren't going to sign him as I do not either.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ain't got a clue but are you the same bloke who posted WE ARE NOT SIGNING GASTON RAMIREZ

Agree0 Disagree0

Not going to sign Lamela?

Maybe not, but it is quite possible we will.

The reasoning given that he will be difficult to sign is partly down to his contractual arrangements that would need some sorting. Well, was that not the same situation with Gaston. If anyone can sort out that type of situation it is NC!

Lamela is a young, hot prospect who is Argentinian. Perhaps he would like to work with an Argentinian coach, who has experience as a past international for his country? Was the appointment of MP related in any way?

Can Saints sell the club to such players? Yes, I believe they can, if, as I suspect, they can show they will seriously add to the squad this summer. Much depends on the player, but I don't believe that all good young players strive to follow the money and join a team that splashes out loads of money to secure success in the CL-didn't work with City, did it, and how much match time did Sinclair get?

I feel they was a real attempt to sign Coutinho as the club could see that type of player complimenting Gaston. Could see a similar logic for Lamela.

NC's ambition will require this sort of addition. Will it happen? Possibly.
