Just incase we get a few bad injuries, does anyone know if we have a recall clause in Punch's loan deal?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We do have a recall clause but it says Puncheon himself gets the final say rather than our club.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh fair enough, wouldn't mind him back at the mo to be honest

HURRAY! the transfer window is shut, all this speculation on who, how and when new players were coming in is done. Whewsh! that was stressful. Now that the dust is settled we have added three quality players to a good young side. Yes I would have liked more, but is more always better? we have a few question marks around a few players that need to prove themselves this year, and if too many were added how would these players get time to improve. Another year in the BPL to assess the players that we have will go a long way in deciding which players are up to it. here is a list of the players I feel will have something to prove;

Ramirez (12m), Jrod (8m), Lallana, Fonte, Myuka, Loveren (new 8m), VW (new 12m), Osvaldo (new 15m), and some academy players will also want to prove they can cut it, chambers, rowe and isgrove etc.

We have a group of talented players that need time to prove they are good enough, but we can wait forever. This year will be a huge year in my opinion in the answers to the question of who can cut it and who can't an this level. oh. forgot to mention Poch, his first full year to get this team to play his way, he has the most to prove to SFC if he is the right man. I am hoping all come good and we have a great season! March on Saints. March on.

Mayuka has gone out on loan so isn't exactly going to prove himself to be Premiership standard this year.

now that the craziness of deadline day has passed did anybody notice how awesome punch was for palace on sunday I think we have made a mistake loaning him!!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Could not agree anymore!
Stupid to let him leave with replacing him!
What going on at the club have they all lost the plot?
Mayuka as well?
Would be a lot easier to understand if the club would let the surpporters know what going on!ie there going to bring on the under 21s something!!anything!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Looks like we will only use wing-backs to give us width and provide crosses when they are able to. Most of the time we will pack the midfield and play Spanish style one or two touch possession football and try to pass the ball into the net.
I soooo hope I am wrong!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes. just think, we could end up playing like Barcelona and walk the ball into the net. Time after time after time. That would be just awful, wouldn't it?

Seriously, where has all this panic come from? One poor game against Norwich? We completely outplayed Sunderland the week before, and with a bit more luck, a bit better officiating, and a few players shaking the rust off, we will soon be scoring well enough. We also won't let many in, a big difference form last season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes playing like a poor mans Barcelona, plenty of possession, death by a thousand cuts style ticky taky football - but with no goals.
You say one poor game - Our BPL record is beginning to speak for itself played NINE won ONE.
And to think people are dreaming of Europe!
If we don't start smashing teams like Wet Spam off the park soon then this season will end up in a dog fight just like the last.
Lets get this season started this weekend.

Agree0 Disagree0

Okay not this weekend but on the 15th then.

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha we're not gunna end up in a relegation scrap, new players will take a while to gell, may I remind you that last year by now we had conceded 8 goals and had no points to our name yet now we've got 4 points and have conceded twice, ok we had scored 4 goals by then last year, but at least we're solid defensively and it's hardly like we haven't got any goals in the team is it? We'll start scoring more soon, have faith!

Agree0 Disagree0

We are much better defensively but only 5 goals in the last 9 BPL games and none of them came from open play.
I think we have a much better team than last year but then most teams can say the same.
Plus last year we had a very difficult start where as this year we were handed a very much easier start to the season, now we have the tough fixtures still to come.
Also do not under estimate the difficulty of the second year when everyone knows how to play against you to get a result.
I think the West Ham game should show us where we are - and I hope that's top half. Rickie for a hattrick!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree that those dreaming of a European spot were a bit over-optimistic, but I think the current clouds of pessimism here and on other forums seem like an overreaction in the opposite direction. Before the season started, I expected us to end up somewhere between about 9th and 12th, and I still expect that. The top eight of the Premier League is made up of very, very good teams and it will take time to break into that. The top four is going to be out of reach for a while yet, if we ever get there.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have posted this before. But, What I understand, Is that, the reason for Punch being loaned was not a football decision by the management, But a compassionate one, as he wanted to be close to his home town, for family reasons. So 'Well done' to them!

Agree0 Disagree0

I heard The Family reason link on SportTalk and was also in The Sunday Times at he time. as follows:
WINGER JASON Puncheon is expected to join Crystal Palace on a season-long loan from Southampton.
The deal for the 27-year-old is due to be completed today.
Puncheon, born in Croydon, is reported to want the move because of family reasons.
( And Yes, I've posted this twice, but now hopefully in t he right place )

Agree0 Disagree0

If MoPo rated Punch and he was part of the plan would we have let him go so easily. If Osvaldo becomes home sick will we just say okay off you go? Think not.

Shame no more deals went through, I don't think we need much but I think in Jan we'll have to get more depth. As I see it we have 3 quality striker in Jay, Lambo and Obsvaldo all capable of getting goals, we're a bit light on wide players as only Lallana, Ramirez and Guly so could do with another winger or get Punch back, but IMO we should sell Guly as I'm not sure he's up to it, for CM we're also fine as we have Steve Davies, Cork, Shneiderlin, Wanyama and JWP which is almost too many, but JWP is mainly used as a wide player at the mo so it's ok, as for CB we're pretty good as we have Fonte, Lovren, Yoshida and Hoiveld, at Full back we have Clyne, Chambers, Shaw and Fox and GK we're ok with Boruc, Davies and Gaz.
I'd quite like Guly being replaced by a pacey winger like Lennon or maybe just give Omar Rowe or Isgrove a chance as they fits the bill, at CB I think we get another quality CB and get rid of Hoiveld we'd be solid, Fonte has played very well so far though and being a bit fussy I reckon we could do with a slightly younger Gk, maybe Fraser Forster?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Isn't the "younger GK" supposed to be one of Cropper, Gazza, and Britt? I don't think there's any need to worry there for a while, anyway. Boruc is only 33, which isn't all that old for a 'keeper these days.

Agree0 Disagree0

We do need a winger and for me on deadline day should of got lennon wether it was agent talk or not we were linked and with boruc next june we will sign a keeper and i'd hope someone like leno of bayern leverkusen young germanclass keeper and maybe a cb as if lovren gets injured were back to the same 2 as last yer and there just not good enough

Don't know if it's true but I just got told that in the BPL Saints have only won one of the last 10 and haven't scored a goal from open play since April, is this true?

Perhaps people have realised that we try and play down the middle now without much width and it much easier to defend against us like that.

Shame we weren't the ones waking up to the news we had Lukaku, as we don't have much of a plan "B" when plan "A" isn't working.

In MoPo and NC we trust.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I still cannot get over how we let Puncheon go when he was one of the star performers last season.

I feel that MoPo is turning us into a very dull la liga esc side who knock the ball around but don't really do much with it. We need to play to our strengths get Lambert in the box and get the crosses in

Agree0 Disagree0

Did we have a choice with Puncheon leaving? maybe it was already "in the cards" if CP came up that he wanted to leave. Here's my conspiracy theory - it was known to management that JP wanted to play for CP if they came back as he had mentioned it on the field a few times as CP looked like they could pull off a top three to get promoted. JP was confronted by management and admitted his desire to play for CP if they made it back to the BPL. Mutual agreement (sorry to see ya want to go type of speech- but we need committed to SFC players. etc) by both parties, and voila, in form Punch was sat on the bench at the end of last season, and not used this season when clearly he was our best RM and formed a good partnership with Clyne. So we Loan JP for the year and if CP fail and go back down he comes back to us. what do ya think? it answer the frustration questions like "why was he used so sparingly in the later stages of the season last year, why were we giving a player that performed well the cold shoulder?

Agree0 Disagree0

MoPo didn't fancy Punch
JM didn'y fancy Lukaku

No idea why, but they didn't!

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it's probably much simpler than that. Pochettino wants to start a squad rotation system, and especially wants to start with a narrower midfield. Puncheon wants to be a week-in, week-out starter. We already know he (Punch) can get a bit sulky when he doesn't get in the lineup, so the best solution all around (for him and for team unity) was to send him to Palace on loan.

Punch would've been the difference against Norwich and Sunderland. Would much rather him than Lennon, he's a game changer. Pretty much every time he came on last season he was a threat, and vital to the team.

BaffledSaint

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agreed, it's a strange one and now we're particularly low on wide players :/ I think Jan will be about increasing squad depth

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe MoPo doesn't play with wide players and that's why we got rid?

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe you should shut up. Every time he came on last season he gave us something different and often turned games on their heads. It's nice to have something called options.

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe I totally agree with you?
