I'm reading we've just signed a 16yr old
lad from Dundee Utd called Kieran Freeman.
From what I've read people seem to have very high hopes for him.
Does anyone know if this is true or know anything about him.
If it is, looks like Claude has hit the ground running with promoting youth talent!

Burtmars

{Ed007's Note - I know Celtic and Man Utd tried to sign him as a schoolboy mate and you're right he's highly rated but that's about it for me I'm afraid mate, sorry.}

1.) 01 Jul 2016 02:38:13
I read he was a defender, but what exact position is he?

{Ed001's Note - he is meant to be a right back, but he is still young and that can change.}

2.) 01 Jul 2016 12:33:27
Yes he has signed. He is a versatile defender who plus Arab but can slot in as a CB for now. Looks much the same type of player as Chambers. Nice little signing, be good to see him cut his teeth in the league cup maybe.

3.) 01 Jul 2016 14:34:22
When I say Arab, I mean right back. Not that Arabic people can't play right back.

So, reports are that Saints will honour their 'Gentlemans Agreement' with Wanyama and let him go to Spurs for about £25m. Considering Tonny Vilhena is now available on a free I can't see any reason to stand in his way. If we could get Vilhena for nothing it's a great bit of business. Don't know an awful lot about him but what I've heard is that he's a real talent.

Burtmars

1.) 25 May 2016 13:05:28
Aren't vilhena and wanyama two different type of players?

2.) 25 May 2016 16:00:58
Very different, Vilhena is more box-to-box. Someone like Bazoer (highy sought after) would be a better like for like replacement.

3.) 25 May 2016 17:21:43
Vilhena is more similar to Gylfi Sigurðsson than Wanyama.

4.) 25 May 2016 17:44:02
Edgar Davids is the common comparison.

5.) 25 May 2016 19:12:39
Mmmmmm. Be sad to see Vic go but I think this is likely. But out there, but Morgan isn't fitting in as well at Utd as he first thought and I can see Jose stripping that squad back and Morgan may well be a casualty. Would we take him back? Would he come back? May be worth an enquiry? He'd be a good deal for 15m if we let Vic go for the 25 mentioned. Although knowing Spurs, I would expect the Vic deal to be riddled with add ons and clauses. Probably something like 7.5m up front with an extra 10m if he scores 15 goals a season and an extra 8 if he wins the league. Plus a sell on of 16.4% if sold on a Wednesday.

6.) 26 May 2016 14:11:51
I think the saddest thing is Harrisson reed is more than capable of holding his own in the wanyama role. is free but who would play a midfield of Reed/ Claisee and Davis and not win a header in midfield possibly for the game. As a player Reed is superb I've seen him in the first team and under 21's and he can mark players far bigger out of the game, great tackler and stays in control. However can't see him getting a run as long as claisse is in the team due to height issues.

7.) 26 May 2016 18:27:29
Oriel was bought as Wanyama's replacement.

01 Jul 2014 20:50:13
I just read that Danny Ings is now free to speak to both Newcastle & Saints after both clubs matched Burnleys' valuation of him.
We've got to be favourites to sign him.
Looks like we might have some strength in depth and dare I say it a Plan B for next season if Pellè comes and Osvaldo comes back without his head up his arse!

Burtmars

1.) I wouldn't be so sure about him choosing us over Newcastle, yes he supports us but they'll offer him more money. Particularly seeing as we're looking to make financial gains wherever possible at the moment.

2.) ^ why are people convinced the owners just want to use us to make money, they wouldn't have done the work at the stadium if that was the case - the lights and extra drainage are a pretty big cost that's non essential

Anyway I agree that ings probably wouldn't choose us, not on the money front but apparently he's said he's reluctant to play for us

3.) Not a rumour but would love it to be, the best player I have seen at the world cup is Alexis Sanchez. Silly I know but you could at least ask Barca just for the hell of it. If we want to be up there with the big boys we have to aim to get players of his quality. If we won't or can't then the Champions League dream will never happen. We must put Southampton on the map internationally to attract these type of players, we were just doing that and then the exodus occurred. Back to the drawing board I'm afraid.

4.) 02 Jul 2014 19:41:59
Can I ask why you think he would be reluctant to play for us? Is it his desire for Europe or something closer to home

5.) Alexis Sanchez? Lol
The club are building for the future. Not next season. With the appointment of sammy lee and Watson shows our ambition. They want to restructure the academy so the kids are playing the southampton way from the moment they sign up. This to me indicates they are looking long term, to produce more youngsters and attract more as well. Any youngster out there looking at shaw and lallana will want to join our academy.
Eventually we will be churning out more English youngsters than we can sell. That will bring success. Not overpaid foreigners

6.) Point taken but we won't stay in the Premier League waiting for the academy to sort us. The EPL is big business and to succeed you need to employ the big guns, sorry but true.

7.) It's not my opinion that he'd be reluctant to play for us, it's just something I've heard from a few sort of itk people and one of the eds on here has said it too I think. I personally wouldn't want us to sign him, he's had a good season but I think he's still got to prove alot, especially if the 10 million figure is correct

8.) Great post Saintsmiff, that's exactly the plan going forward regarding youth.

29 Jun 2014 23:01:18
Reading from some places that Zenit have accepted a bid from Saints for Axel Witsel and Feyenoord have accepted a bid from us for Pellè.
Not sure how reliable, but could be the start of an interesting week.
Looks like Koeman wants to start building straight away!

Burtmars

1.) Pelle yes
axel can't see it

2.) Would like to see axel at the club, I think he could come if reports are true

3.) 30 Jun 2014 13:05:03
real madrid want witzel . so I don't think he will be coming anytime soon.
pelle should be announced in the next 48 hours

4.) Real madrid want james rodriguez! doesn't mean anything yet lol if they want witsel

04 Jun 2014 10:59:40
Friend of mine from Sweden is telling me rumours in the press over there are saying that Hernandez might come to us as part if the Shaw deal.
I think I'd be pretty happy with that. What do others think?

Burtmars

1.) I think hernandez would fit perfectly into our style of play and with ramirez playing through the middle if lallana goes (hopefully not) then we would continue to see some high up the pitch, possession games. Nice to hear some rumours about people coming in. COYR

2.) Not sure, Hernandez is obviously a goal scorer, but would offer much in terms of link up play? I'd rather we went for other targets personally

3.) Jld, what is our style of play? Since we don't have a manager I'm not entirely sure we can really speculate as to who will fit and who won't fit out squad. Personally, I can't see Hernandez wanting to come to Saints.

4.) We a goal scorer inside the 18yrd box proper old school poacher, no point in having loads of link up players without anyone to tuck away the chances

5.) I think Hernandez just wants regular first team football. If kl is still interested and the dream is still alive I think we have a chance of luring him here. I'd imagine dell daze that our style of play will continue in the same vain it did with Nigel and mauricio.

6.) It doesn't matter what style of play you have all styles need a goal scorer he is deadly around the penalty box, and I think he would have something to prove to it'd if he came here, give kl some slack I'd rather they kept there cards close to there chest than being linked with every player in the world like spurs and liverpool

7.) Yes but Smirky after losing Lambert we have lost that link up play up the top, which will miss a lot next season so needs replacing and I think there are better all round players out there to look at and I agree with Jld that our next manager will be selected on having a similar philosophy to Mauricio.

8.) 04 Jun 2014 20:18:54
I have a nasty feeling that the main issue which led to both Cortese and Pochettino leaving is actually money, the size of the transfer budget. Koeman would want a sizable budget to work with if he comes to Saints. I don't think he will be appointed sadly. Magath is an interesting one, he really didn't impress me at Fulham, even if they were a lost cause. Saints need to make statement of intent. The press and football fans will react according to whoever is appointed. Given that I don't have any faith in Reed or Krueger , if less than a top rank manager is appointed I and most will assume that a fire sale is on they way. Liebherr take note, if you care about this club, do not get this decision wrong, you haven't exactly set the world on fire with your decisions to date.

9.) 04 Jun 2014 21:31:54
I think we should push j-rod up a little next season. We missed him a lot towards the end of the season and with some pace up front (hernandez or even gallagher) we could get over the loss of lambert. I think that people leaving is inevitable with the team we had last year but the money we get in could solve the lower transfer budget if like monte thinks we have a lower one this year.

I'm sure (hope! ) over the course of the season things will probably work out OK. But am I the only one who is frustrated by our apparent lack of ambition during this window.
Everton now in for Sissoko
Palace sign Townsend, Benteke and Remy
Stoke get Bony and Martins-Indi
West Ham now have Zaza.
I'm not saying we should have signed all or even any of these players in particular but when these clubs, who can't offer European football are clearly improving their current squad, while we seem to be just replacing lost players with no obvious signs of improvement, it's a worrying sign.

So, the Fonte issue rumbles on.
How about if we did let him go to Utd we got Rashford down to the South Coast on a season long loan.
So far this season, he hasn't had a look in at Utd, and if we do end up letting JRod go out on loan ourselves, seems like a really nice fit.
Still think we'd need a Fonte replacement, strong CDM and a striker. But it that all happened, we'd be looking pretty tidy I think.

Burtmars

1.) 22 Aug 2016 10:21:29
Burtmars, spot on mate, I agree a target man a hard tackling commanding midfielder and probably a CD if Fonte goes. Rashford on loan would be amazing! let's be honest if we sell Fonte to UTD it will be because he wants to go so if we could get the rash on loan I would be well happy with that.

07 Jul 2016 18:45:27
Should I be worried that (yet again) all the pre-season talk is about those leaving and not about those coming in!?
I know the usual soundbite is that Saints like to do things behind closed doors. And you can add to that this year with the fact that the new manager likes to promote youth. But we finished 6th last year, we have a proper campaign in Europe to manage and yet there isn't any signs of anyone coming in.
I'm all for giving Gallagher, Stephens and Seager etc a try in the first team but surely that has to be on top of some signings, some quality signings that will improve our first team, not just our squad.

Burtmars

1.) 07 Jul 2016 19:39:53
Manager wants to run the rule over the whole squad before bringing in anyone so he knows himself what we need. Some players are still on hols or at the euros.

2.) 07 Jul 2016 20:39:40
The worst thing about selling high and buying low is our debt to the owner does not seem to decrease so where is the money going exactly?

3.) 08 Jul 2016 00:02:06
The transfer window has only just opened, Calm down.

4.) 08 Jul 2016 10:31:21
Not one of the youngsters you mention is good enough, so we do need to purchase replacements. However, as noted the window has only just opened and we’ve only just got our new Manager in situ, so patience is needed.

13 Aug 2014 10:42:14
Sunderland have got Rodwell for £10m and looks like they've now also got Will Buckley from Derby for only £2.5m
Can't help but think we've missed out big time on those two.

Burtmars

1.) Not to mention crystal Palace getting Frazier Campbell for 900k.

2.) I agree 2 players I quite like, Campbell was a bargain too, as well as Hull getting Ince, QPR getting Caulker and then if Stoke get Redmond I'll be pretty gutted too

28 Jun 2014 18:43:41
If we do end up losing Lovren, we could do a lot worse than Gary Medel.
Just got relegated with Cardiff where he was mainly playing in the middle, but can clearly do a great job at the back as his performances for Chile are showing.

Burtmars

1.) 28 Jun 2014 19:09:29
Wouldn't be near the quality of Lovren in my opinion. I think Medel is a decent player and tenacious but would get caught out at CB because his lack of height.

2.) Think he would prob join a team whos in europe next i'm afraid

Apparently we are now interested in Moussa Marega from Porto (22 goal in 29 games last year) for about £22m.

And Newcastle/ West Brom talks over Rondon have broken down.

Regardless of whether Fulham sign Targett or not surely we have to make a strong effort to bring in a striker.

Haven't we?

Of course not, but it has to at least make him a less likely departure. And having him on such a long term deal that he has agreed to also means we are under absolutely no pressure to sell him. Do you know where he is a possible out to?

Burtmars

{Ed002's Note - You are missing the point - I wronte he is a possible. This is degrading the same way again as it does every year when any departures are mentioned - Lovren, Wanyama, Lallana - you just can't accept that other clubs might be interested in Southampton players.}

The same VVD that signed a new 6 year contract 2 months ago?

Burtmars

{Ed002's Note - Yes. Signing a contract does not make a player immune from interest.}

As much as I'd hate to see Jack Cork leave, if RoKo can't find room for him, he deserves a chance to hold down a first team place elsewhere. Yes, £3m does seem laughable, but he's only got 1yr left on his contract.
As long as the replacements are at least the equal of the players leaving, we shouldn't worry, and I see no reason to worry.
If we can fight hard to bring in Jordy Clasie as a replacement for Jack Cork and with Gardos coming in to replace Lovren, we are starting the new season in an albeit new and untested, but stronger position that last year.

I'm sure loads of people will all read it their own way, but I really can't see that being anything other than bad news.
Still if it happens, I'm sure we will move on. I just think with a potential Fonte replacement, a playmaker and another striker we will start this season stronger than we started last.
I really hope he does stay, but if the biggest clubs come calling it's hard to keep hold of our players. We know this from many previous seasosns.
