Is it just me or is it a bit too quiet on the "transfer in" front at Southampton? The new manager has been in place for long enough now and I feel it's about time we started making some moves, enquiries and offers for players? Is there anyone we are actually interested in at this stage? I appreciate it's a long window, but we've started ore season and could do with any new signings getting in now so they can find their feet in the squad. We need a new CB at the very least! I can accept maybe we won't get a first team 20 goal a season striker as we aren't in Europe and Gallagher is back, but come on saints! Check that black box and get some batteries in it. Any interest in players you know of Ed?

Jamesaint

{Ed002's Note - Since the change of manager I have not really been available. I will see if I can find anything out.}

1.) 17 Jul 2017 09:43:04
Agreed. I know that 99% of players that we are linked to is just media hype. However, personally I do worry when other teams challenge us for signings, we almost always lose out and its not to the big big teams but teams in and around us. I know we can't sign everyone but surely 1 or 2.That said most of our signings are under the radar (Mane is a good example) so perhaps I should just chill. I dunno, I guess i'm just not left feeling confident during the transfer window/ s.

2.) 17 Jul 2017 10:51:13
Whilst I don't believe we should be in this position, i. e. having a new manager, let's at least give him a chance to assess the squad and see where he feels it needs to be strengthened, rather than just buy some randoms who may or may not be better than what we have.

Personally, I think by the end of this tour he'll have his wish list into Les and things should move - IF we need anybody.

3.) 17 Jul 2017 12:55:50
I thought Les just told the manager what he was going to get?

4.) 17 Jul 2017 13:25:09
I agree we should give the manager time to assess the squad. just don't want to leave it so late in the window and buy from the scraps that are left - meanwhile all the better players go elsewhere and potentially to rivals. If teams around you strengthen then more often than not you need to strengthen too. unless you have an amazing team already.

5.) 17 Jul 2017 17:16:26
Even if we just pick up a gem or 2. We definitely need a quality CB or even 2, we saw the struggle last year after fonte left in that whilst we have players that can come in and do a job, there isn't adequate cover required to last a whole season in case of injuries or suspension. Added to this, these players are now a year older and let's face it, VVD is more likely to be lining up against us than for us next season. Also I do think we need to find more goals from somewhere and it can't just be gabby that we rely on who, as yet, is unproven in this league. ✒️✒️✒️.

6.) 17 Jul 2017 20:33:12
Jof you obviously have no idea how our club operates.

7.) 18 Jul 2017 11:18:03
Milky, you're right. It's the really short chap who tells Les who then tells the manager!

8.) 18 Jul 2017 12:07:38
Proving my point with your nonsense.

9.) 18 Jul 2017 13:52:42
Surely you accept that Ross Wilson is pretty short for a grown-up?

23 Apr 2017 13:09:35
So, I have read a few stories today linking Watfords Helder Costa with Southampton. Apparently Monaco, Arsenal and Chelsea are looking at him with Arsenal already sending scouts to look at him. Perhaps if we can offer guaranteed first team
Football we might just be an interesting move for the lad. Looks good at Watford recently and I think he could be a good addition. Thoughts?

Jamesaint

1.) 23 Apr 2017 14:19:49
think you will find he plays for wolves.

2.) 23 Apr 2017 15:16:51
Ah yes, apologies. The rest is true though, well, not necessarily true but validated.

3.) 24 Apr 2017 16:09:34
they have just paid 13m I believe so would take 20 odd I would think to get him away from them. Then you think if he isn't ready straight away Sigurdsson would be a much better proposition. what message doe this send to the fringe players if we do this. We already have to may midfielders to keep all happy with others coming through and knocking on the door.

4.) 25 Apr 2017 14:26:17
We need more goals from midfield and it doesn't matter how many players we already have they are not going to add up to the required quality or finish.

Saints have confirmed boufall has signed a five year deal. With out back room and physios, this is great news! His injury (apparently) clearly is not a major concern as we will have picked every last detail of it apart to identify any risk! Good signing and a nice long contract. Should keep Liverpool away for a few seasons!

Jamesaint

1.) 29 Aug 2016 12:47:07
Great news good statement for our future.

2.) 29 Aug 2016 14:04:14
£16m apparently.

3.) 29 Aug 2016 14:28:59
With add ons. Also a significant sell on fee apparently.

4.) 30 Aug 2016 10:47:46
Hi Eds. Rumour circulating that Arsenal would be open to loan Wilshere to us for the season? Does this have any legs and could it happen?

{Ed002's Note - I know of nothing related to Southampton.}

5.) 30 Aug 2016 12:10:50
Jamesaint is that the same backroom and physio staff that were probably consulted on and confirmed that JayRod would return as fit, strong and quick as before so we should go ahead and offer him a new 4 year contract? .

6.) 30 Aug 2016 12:35:04
Probably ^^ what's your point?

7.) 31 Aug 2016 11:12:47
My point being that JayRod most certainly has not returned in the same shape as before and as such doesn't look half the player he was. I'm sure our backroom staff know what they're doing but I wouldn't be singing their praises too much in terms of Boufal's injury just yet.

On a different topic, anyone else think we're really short of the mark this year? Trying to stay positive but feel we've been far too naive thinking we've got enough quality and depth.

26 Aug 2016 08:06:59
Apparently we have agree a new contract with Jose Fonte for 2 more years. £75k per week. This is being reported this morning. I'd heard that "talks between him and saints were progressing well" yesterday. Great news!

Jamesaint

1.) 26 Aug 2016 08:52:55
See we can keep players :) I think this in it self is a big statement for the club. Manchester UTD come in for Fonte, I honestly 100 percent thought he was gone. At his age coming to the end of his career and having just won the European championship with Portugal I really thought he would be off for a last big pay day but mainly to say he played for UTD, to have it on his CV. So this news is most welcome, superb news.

So the club does have it in them to not sell every bit of talent onto bigger clubs. let's hope we can do this more often going forward, no for some signings of our own before the window shuts please :)

2.) 26 Aug 2016 09:53:31
If this is actually true, Jose Fonte will go down as one of the most important players we have ever had!

3.) 26 Aug 2016 10:11:37
Think even if he had gone to UTD he would / should still have been held in high regard, but yes a legend for the club :)

4.) 26 Aug 2016 10:16:47
Agree great if true inly thing is was he ever going? Or was this another great but if business by his agent with him looking after mourinho as well. Don't begrudge home the money but am sure others will have pay parity in their contracts as well. Either way striker and at least one other by end of business please.

5.) 26 Aug 2016 10:38:02
I couldn't agree more, he would always have been very important and a legend if he had have moved, but THIS takes him from Lambert status to Letissier status. Let's build him a statue and call the stadium St Fonte of St Mary's. If I ever see him again I'm going to lick his face.

6.) 26 Aug 2016 10:57:31
Saint ben basingsoke "At his age, coming to the end of his career" Why would you then want him staying till 34? He is too slow NOW, let alone in 2 years. You seem to have contradicted yourself. Get rid and get someone in as good as VVD.

7.) 26 Aug 2016 11:14:00
LOL he is upthere but Le God status? I don't think so :)

8.) 26 Aug 2016 11:38:23
Larry, Fonte is at least as good as vvd, in fact I would argue better. He is a leader and organised the defence impeccably. Speed isn't necessarily the most important attribute for a commanding CB, I'd argue that he still has it anyway. The whole team jut looks far more confident when he is on the pitch. John Terry is still going strong at his age and being considered for a role in the national team again. 34 isn't old as a CB, maybe as a box to box midfielder who covers upwards of 5 miles in 90 minutes. But even then, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard would still walk into most premier league teams at their age. Fitness levels are much higher now in these players and 34 is a good age.

9.) 26 Aug 2016 12:49:45
Spot on Jamesaint, Larry lol, WTF! your obviously a deluded pompey or UTD fan. What you have just said is actually funnier than the guy that said robson kanu is better then Charlie Austin. Doughnut :)

10.) 26 Aug 2016 12:52:39
Looking at all 5 of yours posts Larry all you do is slate our players, definitely not a saint! Go elsewhere and moan about your own club!

11.) 26 Aug 2016 18:33:56
another great attribute of Fonte is his positioning.

12.) 26 Aug 2016 23:05:39
If I disagree with any of you peoples comments you always pull the pathetic skate card.
There are number of people on saints forums who have stated quite clearly, including that actual basingstoke bloke, that he is at the end if his career, Basingstoke then says that he is ecstatic that a Saints player at the end of his career has now got a 2 year extension. That is a contradiction in terms of the English Language. Why want a player a player at the end of his career at all. Le God Les has now got Log, Fonte and Davis on long term contracts who are now on the downward slope.
My opinion. Disagree but don't be a complete ****er and call me a skate. I have been a Saints fan since 1960 onwards

13.) 28 Aug 2016 08:31:47
Larry, fair point and I understand what you are saying. But Fonte is NEARING the end of his career and a few years left at the top level, earning big money is what he deserves. I think that what you have understood to mean that he is at the end of his career is simply people saying that this will be his last chance to move to another Lin within the same league and certainly a bigger club. When he is at the next stage, it will be a big step down the league or to somewhere like USA to just entertain the crowds. Also, a 2 year deal isn't a long term deal at all. In actual fact it's a fairly short term deal given that it will only tie him down to the club for 18 months, and that only if we don't decide to let him go. The contract only states (in its simplest terms) that the player will earn a set wage or an agreed wage for a set period of time, either until the contract expired, is replaced by another, the club and player mutually agree to destroy it or he does something that contravenes the contract ie criminal record. Other bits and pieces can be, and very often are, tucked into the contract like performance bonuses, minimum games, sponsorship, buy out clauses, etc etc. But 2 years is not long at all.

Rachid Ghezzal Linked, from Lyon I believe. Striker. I don't think there have been any enquirers or bids as of yet but I wonder if ed knows of any interest from our part? Reported in a red top paper site so I won't be putting a months wages on it.

1.) 24 Aug 2016 23:36:06
He is a winger from what I am aware.

So, according to sky, VVD has agreed to join Liverpool provided they qualify for champions league football next season for a fee of 50m. Interesting considering Arsenal and Chelsea have both been mentioned in the last few days as confirmed destinations. Seems like he is the player the press love to talk about. As long as it gets his fee up! Keep up like this and we can sign ronaldo!

So, Landers have bought a stake in the club which makes them a majority shareholder, therefore to all intents and purposes, now own us. Thoughts on this?

Jamesaint

1.) 26 Jan 2017 21:15:02
I'm thinking you've read something and then added some extra lines in for your own pleasure. Or in Lehmans terms you've exaggerated the truth

2.) 26 Jan 2017 22:49:49
As the amount of stake purchased in the club has not been announced how can you say they own the club . They are purchasing a percentage not the club. They may have an intent to buy later down the line but please wait till the facts emerge befor such rash statements. Personally i am concerened due to the companys history and unknown intent but let's see what happens.

3.) 27 Jan 2017 18:26:00
I hear they've purchased a 15% stake, so it's an investment not a takeover - for now and who knows as far as the future's concerned. Only what the hear but. Think pretty reliable. I'm sure it'll be confirmed in the fullness of time.

25 Sep 2016 09:49:04
When are we going to see boufall? Our key signing and yet to pull on a shirt. We are starting to get to some tricky premier league fixtures and need someone who can either hit the back of the net or put it on a plate for our strikers. Yes I know we have scored but our conversion rate isn't where it should be and I think this guy might give us an edge.

Jamesaint

1.) 25 Sep 2016 11:52:54
Puel said he and J-Rod would be back in full training after the international break + a few weeks to get up to fitness puts it at the beginning of November ish.

2.) 26 Sep 2016 22:32:03
Hopefully not to soon: we are currently winning, playing good football and don't need Liverhampton taking them in January!

01 Sep 2016 17:51:34
Not really a rumour, but a talking point all the same. Player of the month this month. Really? After the month we have had? 2 points against premier league fodder and Man Utd. Personally I think issuing a player of the month based on that is a bit of a sham.

Jamesaint

1.) 02 Sep 2016 10:29:03
I think regardless of how a team is performing it's important to focus on the positives and what's worked/ gone well, this is a proven way to develop self-confidence and self-efficacy (belief in your own ability) (not your ability of course, example given for definition only) .

30 Aug 2016 13:58:50
Jack Wiltshire on a loan deal? Be good cover for the European campaign and give us another option? Yes I know we have midfielders but he is a quality player (when he isn't injured) I'd take him, particularly with the risk gone if he is injured.

Jamesaint

1.) 30 Aug 2016 16:10:42
I can't see any more midfielders coming in. Wouldn't surprise me to see another right back and possibly a striker come in late on in the night before the transfer window closes tomorrow night. All will be revealed on Thursday. Patience is a virtue. Keep the faith.

yes ed, you're right. I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. (If only you knew) but yes, I will drop it.

Jamesaint

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what "if you only knew" means but you know little of the account of players as intangible assets - I cannot help that. You really need to move on or find somewhere else to have such discussions.}

Then by that logic, every football team in the world is a failure by virtue of the fact that no one has won everything?

They only show as intangible assets when they are purchased, therefore the "value" of the player on the open market isn't on a balance sheet, VVD was signed for a fee significantly lower than his current value. When the club bought him, THAT amount of money would be logged on the balance sheet and will have come down since. JWP will be worth zero on a balance sheet because we didn't buy him.

Jamesaint

{Ed002's Note - You need to drop this James - the players are listed in the accounts as Intangible Assets. You need to move on - this is clearly something you don't understand.}

Players aren't assets at all. Nor are they intangible assets. Intangible means you can't physically touch it. The only intangible asset on a balance sheet is the goodwill when a business has a "brand" which has been purchased, or when someone has gone from a sole trader or partnership to a limited company. Intangible assets amortise over time to a nil balance. Players are staff, simple as that. They only become an asset when they are realised, for example sold.

Jamesaint

{Ed002's Note - Players are dealt with as intangible assets as they are indeed amortised on the books over the length of their contract - or indeed in one go if the club wishes to account like that (but it is one or the other and not a mix). Sorry.}

Saints 87. Your logic is remarkably flawed. Runnders up in a cup against Manchester United is NOT a failure. It would have been considered a fail for Manchester United if WE had won it, but not the other way around. A cup final day for a club like Southampton is a pretty good result, considering there are only 2 main domestic cup competitions there are only 4 places available in a final day! As 123 said, a Madrid team, Barca, Utd etc a loss at a final is a fail, but not for us, that's an incredible result. It isn't last across the line, it's second out of hundreds of teams.

There's no chance of that if saints have any sense. He was a great player, but this league would tear him apart. He'd be injured within the first 2 weeks and cost us 100k per week for months and take up a treatment table. We would have been better off going for John Terry. At least he played in a position we are low on quality.

Teejay. However seeing our best players leave will also see us fall. Ok this season hasn't seen us fail as was expected but no club, however good their academy and manager are, can't expect to keep selling their talent and sustain their league position. Was I the only person worried by the recent report that our academy has made the most money in Europe recently? Maybe this is because we keep selling!!
