I've just read via a newspaper story that Saints goalkeeper and good servant of the club Fraser Forster is possibly about to sign for Celtic

It's initially on a season loan but could become permanent if all parties are happy to.

I'd like to which Fraser all the very best of luck with this move and hope it makes any of his factors in his personal life or wellbeing happy and in good shape.

Good luck Fraser, and thank you for all your efforts while a Saint. You've done well!

So, I’ve read/ heard a couple of separate rumours linking Saints (among a few others) with Joe Hart.

I’d definitely be happy if we signed him. Saying that, Macca had an amazing end to the season as our ‘keeper. As they say “he’s a keeper! ”

Not sure if Hart, or similar big names are likely, I’d like us to show a bit of exciting ambition and get a few established players as well as the rough gems. We have a great bunch of young lads, might just feed them into the side more regular.

Having just heard the Hughes permanent deal announcement, maybe we would get some of his ex players.

Frankly, I have no idea

Discuss.

1.) 26 May 2018 03:30:04
Hart is a liability. Not the sort of player in my opinion that we want at the club. McCarthy was great for us when given the chance and I think forster is still more solid than Hart.

My opinion let's stay away from him.

2.) 26 May 2018 03:38:17
Also with links to stoke I would happily take Rutland, shawcross and shaqiri.

A lot don't like shaqiri and call him lazy but I think someone like him paired with tadic would give us plenty of chances.

We should buy alcacer from Barcelona also.

3.) 26 May 2018 06:52:24
Play tadic through the center and shaqiri just wide off him and the interplays and one-twos will be magnificent.

4.) 27 May 2018 08:36:04
Am hearing Hughes has 30m and that’s it not sure if he also gets player sales hardly going to set the world alight Promes in and a few outs.

5.) 28 May 2018 14:42:08
I’d like to think they need to invest properly for one season atleast to try to get back to where we were
Hughes will have his list of new faces as will the club hopefully between them they can get it right.

Hey everybody, three main points:

1. I’m delighted and so relieved we pulled off the survival mission this season. Lesson to learn and don’t do it again. Next year we should be back to where we were the previous few seasons, among the top 10 mix and having a good time. Let’s hope so anyway. Come On You Saints.

2. Just give Mark Hughes the job.

3. Disappointed Gareth Southgate hasn’t picked the best English Left back in the World Cup squad. Bertrand is unlucky there, but then again didn’t have his best season. Good luck to Southgate’s Three Lions this summer. Terrible squad, but I’m right behind you. Come on you England!
And finally, agreeing with a few other posters in here, a big well done to all the Editors who work on this page. You’ve put together some good stuff this season, well done all.

Everyone else, enjoy your summer and I look forward to reading your very many inside tips on who may or may not be joining or leaving St Mary’s. Personally I think we should stick a couple of ambitious and very cheeky bids for the likes of Mo Salah, Trent Alex-Arnold and Gareth Bale. What a great Champions League final that’ll be this week. Good luck Liverpool!

Saint Etienne.

1.) 17 May 2018 05:14:04
1. I am too

2. We could do a lot worse than keeping MH

3. What? Bertrand was piss poor throughout the season! In the first 30 games didn't look interested at all, only played in last 8 games or so. But still, to me it was a right decision to leave him out. I don't think he's unlucky at all! It we could get 20m from him, I's say sell him. Very overrated player based on this season.

2.) 17 May 2018 09:50:10
I don't think Bertrand is over rated, I think he was just a bit disinterested this year. Agree that he shouldn't be at the World Cup based on those performances, but I would definitely not settle for £20m. He's still a very talented player and at a new club with fresh motivation, could justify a price tag in the 30-40m range in my opinion.

3.) 17 May 2018 21:52:11
Prior to this season I would have laughed at 20m being an acceptable fee, but form dictates and I would imagine any deal would be between 20-30m now.

I’ll use this opportunity to pay my respects to a footballing great, a true gentleman of the game. Today we say goodnight to Ray Wilkins, one of the greatest players to ever grace our beautiful game. Legend, RIP ‘Butch’ go easy up there.

WELL SAID MY FRIEND
RIP ❤️ LEGEND.

- Southampton appoint Mark Hughes
Former Wales manager Hughes will be joined by his usual backroom team including right hand man Marin Bowen as assistant

Hughes, 54, who played for Southampton between 1998 and 2000, has been out of work since leaving Stoke City in January

Good luck Mr Hughes. Make your Mark.

Saint Etienne

1.) 14 Mar 2018 22:52:13
This daft thing typed ‘Marin’ rather than ‘Mark’

Read correctly as - joined by Mark Bowen. Excuse me for the weird typo

Well there slams another transfer window.

As Jim White dusts off his famous yellow tie on SSN until January’s window, I look on and wonder 1) why do the newspapers bother with ‘gossip column’ stuff as it’s rarely a Transfer happens which matches it and 2) what’s all the fuss about anyway

I’m happy to welcome back THE BOY Theo with open arms
Theo!
Theo!
Theo!

Let’s hope Theo Walcott can find some form and goals and turn into the player he once promised to be. Good luck mate!

Glad to see we’ve shifted the useless players who once cost record transfer fees. Crap business to lose them for nothing but both Boufal and Carillo contributed nothing to Saints. Apart from his one lucky wonder goal, Boufal never looked that good and Carrillo never really got the chance. Good luck to both at their new clubs

Wesley Hoedt good luck at Lazio

Hang on, have we not offloaded Angus Gunn? Perhaps a loan deal to Championship club can still happen after this date? He needs game time and having not played since his 9-0 Leicester howler, it’s time he got a move on. Keep him as back up then I guess.

I’ve heard Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck are both free transfers and left their clubs. I’d give them a go, any day!

That’s all from me
I’ll be singing ‘Theo Theo Theo’ for a good while now. This could be the time!

All the best Saints fans and all footy fans out there. Stay safe.

Somebody (as long as you're not an economical maniac like the current owners) please please please, anybody, buy Bury Football Club and Bolton Wanderers Football Club

Football needs these two great clubs
Life needs these two great clubs

Good luck Bury and Bolton. God I hope your fans get what they deserve and still have their beloved football clubs tomorrow

Steve Dale, if you're reading this please do the right thing.

Slow start to the season or is the league table just a false impression?

I think we lack pace and don't seem to have as much get up and go as I'd like. We are better than we were at most times post Koeman's era, but still to me seems a long way off where he had us and how we were playing

Bit disappointed we didn't re-sign Adam Lallana off Liverpool this summer and didn't get a better established centre back (the new lad could be smashing though) and perhaps we could have got a versatile hard working full back too

I'd say we will do ok this season and are likely to be one of 4 or 5 teams competing for those spots at the upper end of the bottom half of the table.
Romeu, Hojbjerg and Ward-Prowse can be a fantastic axis from midfield

Bring it on
Have a great season everyone. Enjoy the football!

Saint Etienne

1.) 22 Aug 2019 22:46:47
Following Pompey’s most recent result I’m just wodering whether Kenny. Jackett May have conducted his Players’ performance post match by Sending them All To Coventry.! Keep On Marching.

2.) 24 Aug 2019 00:57:56
I used to be a huge fan of Romeo but i know think football has moved on. The 'tough' midfielder breaking up play has now been replaced with the 'tough' midfielder breaking up play but also with vision, with passing ability, goal scoring ability. Hojbjerg is this man and i think Romeo is miles behind. If you watch us now, we are too slow, too slow in buildup, in possession in attack .
WE need to be quicker, more decisive, more incisive .
we are nor keeping up with the Premier League.

3.) 24 Aug 2019 02:10:13
I agree. I think that Romeo is too slow and gets caught out of position too often. Hojbjerg is always looking for the forward pass but Romeo is happy to just lay the ball off to the side often creating problems for other players.

4.) 24 Aug 2019 11:40:36
i agree that romeu is too slow but don't you think he could be a brilliant central defender instead of central midfielder.
if he could make the grade then that would solve a lot of problems.

5.) 24 Aug 2019 12:34:20
Surely we have enough slow central defenders without adding another one in to the mix?

6.) 24 Aug 2019 17:37:52
Today was a perfect example of why we don't need the Romeu type player. We were too slow with the ball. without the ball, and our forward play was . well . not forward!
Bring on Djenepo and we were a different team, bring on Boufal and we were on fire! We must shake of this slow and predictable play, not for the modern Premier League.
Come on you Reds.

7.) 25 Aug 2019 02:54:37
Agree with most comments re our sluggish and inconsistant Mid 3.We have the exciting players in front of them but lack a class striker next to Redmond and Adams. However a great result and confidence booster- we’re off and running-WELL DONE! Keep On Marching.

25 Dec 2018 13:32:09
When the January transfer window opens I’d like us to get a proven centre back of Premier League level. Hearing news that Gary Cahill could be offloaded to the Arsenal made me think surely we’d do with a fella like that

I’d happily take Chris Smalling, but he’s just signed a new contract at United. So maybe his team mate Jonesy instead then

If we’re going to grab someone else’s star man, then I’d love to get a bit of Lascelles from Newcastle

Over to everyone else.

Saint Etienne

1.) 25 Dec 2018 23:28:26
I would love to see Lascelles but it's not going to happen. Benitez has been promised money to buy in Jan so I can't see him moving on and if he does I think he'll go to a bigger team. Personally I don't think we'll bring in anyone although I do agree that we could do with a leader at the back. Hopefully Ralph has something up his sleeve.

In hindsight, Hughes must have already known his fate kn saturday. Think that’s why he picked both Valery and O’bafemi (congratulations on your recent Ireland debut Michael! ) it was a shot-to-nothing against the massive force that is Man United.

One of the first things the new manager (which it appears will be RH) need to do is pick a match day captain. Either put skipper Davis back in the team, or give the armband to Hojbjerg on a permanent basis. As much as I love Berry, he ain’t no leader.

One other point - so glad the rumours of Paulo Sousa being lined-up we’re wrong.

Exciting times. Hopefully our dreams come true.

And I reckon the first few signings Hazelnut makes will be:

Naby Keita - For all his hype and heavy price tag, he’s been a total flop at Liverpool so they’ll probably want to loan him to us to get him up to the standards of Henderson, Milner and Wjinaldum.
It was Hazelnut who turned Keita into the exciting all action midfield maestro at Leipzig. A move here, maybe just a dream, would make sense

Timmy Werner - banged in the goals for Leipzig under Hazelnut and could do the same at Southampton if he wanted to join the glamour and sparkle of the Premier League. Again makes sense in my head. Just hope it’s not the bag of dross we saw disappoint at the World Cup

A top notch centre back who will form a blistering partnership with the viking. We need someone with the organisation kills of Fonte and the slickness of Van Dijk. A modern day Ronald Koeman type of player then. I’m sure there’s a few options out there, maybe many unknown to myself and many of us, but who may already be on Haselnut’s radar/ wish list

The transfer window is coming. This is perfect timing for this new manager. Again, thanks Mark hughes and his staff for doing their job, but now we can kick on with some style, excitement and hopefully goals, goals, goals (less so in our own bloody net though, eh)

Another observation. I think Freddy Kreuger just gave Hazelnut the job because they share the same first name

So then, 8.20pm on the monday evening and it seems like we’ve got our man

There will be many who won’t have the foggiest who this guy is, and I don’t blame them at all - although I do from a distance recognise his name as a player and am fully aware of his recent glories as a manager in the German leagues. This Austrian could prove to be dynamite. He could blow the whole league apart. I’m liking, loving, the idea of a Saints Klopp, a new Pochettino, a new Koeman. Oh yes, the top six is back within our reach

Anyway, somewhere at the start of this thread I mentioned not many people knowing him. Hazelnut as I call him, affectionately. Right now around the country, many a finger are going to Google doing a search for this fella

Ironic really, considering the latest blockbuster movie at the cinema

Yes, I’m going there, Ralph breaks the Internet

Goodnight!

Great article you’ve written above there SaintsGGsy. Lots of views. Good to read

We’re all probably going to disagree on what’s good or who we want playing, but it’s still great to see people being passionate about footy.

I’m enthusiastic about the season ahead but there’s a lot of good times in the premier this season. 12th or 13th would be alright although we could get 7th or 8th if everything clicked into place with a lot of luck too.

Feel safe though.

Welcome Back Walcott. Theo! Theo! Theo!

If they were to let OGS go, surely a move for Pochettino is on the cards at Old Trafford. I think Solskjaer has time and can still do a good job, but you’d feel the lure towards Poch as being pretty exciting

Nobody else springs to mind. Bruce or Dyche aside.

And Bertie!
And Romeu!
And Corky!

Hazard, Salah and Debruyne would be an amazing combination, with a number nine (maybe Tammy abraham) in front of them just banging the goals in. Strange how they let so much go so easily. Hindsight eh?!

On today’s showing, any many previous appearances this season, it’s doubtful whether the Viking Vestergaard is good enough for professional football

What a terrible error. Just give them a goal. Tragic.
