Koeman and Fonte press conference at 3pm confirmed Fonte has signed 3 year extension and will be team captain this year, with Kelvin Davis remaining club captain.

Schneiderlin has been confirmed as making things "difficult", but Koeman is reiterating that he is staying. Schneiderlin will not be in the squad for Bayer Leverkusen game though as he is "not right not just physically but mentally".

Koeman wishes to have further signings for encouraging competition. Rojo was mentioned, as well as a player from Steaua Bucharest which I sadly missed. Koeman is otherwise being cagey about who he wants and how many more signings he wants to make.

Saint90

1.) 08 Aug 2014 15:50:30
Just seen the Steaua player is Florin Gardoș. If he is going for €6m that is not bad. Went to Steaua for about £132k in 2010 and has 2 years left on his current contract. Only thing is he is/was recovering from a muscular injury, so we shall see.

2.) Schneiderlin's off. Everyone knows it. Taider was brought in as his potential replacement.

Don't know why Saints are persisting with this farcical posturing - he's burned all his bridges. The Lallana/Lovren method to forcing a transfer. It worked for them and it'll work for him too. Saints can't have one of their highest earners and best players effectively on strike.

They need to get the best price possible for him and move on. Who cares if it makes Ralph Krueger look like a clown - since when has that bothered him?

Terrible way for Schneiderlin to end his association with Saints, but the club is more important than one self important, unprofessional, disrespectful individual.

3.) 08 Aug 2014 16:30:32
Florin Gardos is the player looks decent and for a reported 4.5 mill. according to Romanian press already has signed - He broke a players leg on European debut - Watch out Lovren and Lallana!

4.) He will remain cagey. We still need a Major signing for credibility purposes.

Anyone any news about Forster?

5.) 08 Aug 2014 16:49:22
We have?!?! Well that one snuck in quietly. Any of my far more learned fellow posters able to share knowledge?

6.) 08 Aug 2014 16:58:59
Just read about what rons saying with regards to spider. That says to me he is incredibly frustrated with the player who is, in effect having a tantrum.

Spider is an excellent player and we are where we are partly because of him.
If he is that determined to cause problems then he has no place with us. A player who doesn't not want to play will never give his all to the team. Get rid of the child and bring in someone who wants to be here.

7.) That question was asked very quietly, I replayed that several times. I think he was talking about Florin Gardos (CB for Steaua București) but I can't be sure. Still, quite a reassuring press conference, would have been happier if they'd announced Cork with a new contract as well but can't have it all my way.

8.) Although it would be another great player leaving, I have to say that I tend to agree that he is better off elsewhere if his heart isn't at Saints. Having said that, we should insist on a huge transfer fee which can be reinvested in the squad as Koeman sees fit. IF Schneiderlin is sold.

9.) I honestly believe Schneiderlin will stay. The Club has seriously put itself out on a limb in explicitly stating that he will stay. on several occasions. Far more unequivocal than Reed's vague April press conference where he said bids "will probably be met with a no" and Krueger's end of season interview where he said "transactions will happen".

10.) 08 Aug 2014 18:18:32
I know the board are trying to save face by saying Schneiderlin is not for sale but why flog a dead horse. Get the money from his sale to whoever and move on. You know my feelings on getting Vlaar, we need to get some proper experience at the back. Talk of this Romanian coming in but can't see that being the answer. People say Vlaar is too old at 29 which I think is crazy, he is at his prime. Look at John Terry etc. if you stay fit and Vlaar is, he could give us 3 - 4 years of top quality stability at the heart of our defence.

11.) 08 Aug 2014 18:32:54
Really like Morgan and what he has done at Saints. BUT he has done pretty well out of Saints as well, and his situation is VERY different to players like Shaw where we were paid our valuation for the player. Morgan seems to think Saints should accept less than 50% of their valuation to assist him, and his agent, to cash in, and also leave little time to find a proper replacement.
He has been told what the situation is. If he refuses to accept it then let him spend a season on the side-lines and not receiving any income other than his basic ie. no winning bonuses etc., and of course any reduction in his basic for failing to train etc.

The club has to be firm on this otherwise it will be anarchy and any player offered more money will seek to ignore their contract.

12.) Qwertyell is quite obviously spiders agent, he will do as he's told he will be made an example of to the younger players and when he gets left out of the next france squad he will start playing for his shirt like a man

13.) Bang on saint martin. we look like a push over and if we need to make an example of someone to let players know a contract is just that then so be.

14.) Prehaps we should take Daniel Agger off liverpool as he can't wait to leave! :P

15.) If as it looks SFC want to make use of spider as an example to anyone else doing a Lallana/Lovren hissy fit, I suggest he be loaded out to Bristol City or the like. he'll never play for France again then!

16.) 08 Aug 2014 20:57:25
Schneiderlin is on strike. bloody disgusting behaviour from a professional who's very well paid. you sir are a complete joke. Sell him, not fit to wear the shirt imo

17.) What's the point keeping someone against their will? That's what our Ice Hockey Coach Chairman said and if Spuds offered £20m does a Saint Martin think we're going to get £40m for Spider?

18.) Been saying for weeks that we have to take a very hard line with this young man. He is sulking, and we cannot give in to this behaviour. Come on Saints be strong. I thought Spider was better than this!

19.) This is it though. spuds offered 10. only real reason why he hasn't been sold.

20.) We shouldn't have put up with any of this behaviour. cortese wouldn't have nor would i.

21.) 08 Aug 2014 22:58:36
The board don't seem to be able to win with some people. The number of calls for them to stop selling at all costs seems to have turned to why are they keeping someone who doesn't want to stay. I'd take the money, but then KL would be accused of stuffing her mattress.
I think they are proving that they do want to improve the squad but that doesn't mean they have to spend every penny they've brought in.

22.) This is absolutely the greatest news for the future of our club. At some point, we have to be strong enough to say NO in order to progress. If that time has come now, the congratulations to all Saints fans.

Morgan will play. Once the deadline passes, he will realize his only way to stay in the French national side is to do well on the pitch for Southampton. Problem solved.

23.) I'm glad we are showing some backbone not selling anymore players, Shneiderlin will have to deal with it, we're not selling him for the £10m Spurs bid, if they bid £20m then fair enough, if we were to get in Classie to replace him I wouldn't be too dissapointed, at least we'd know everyone at the club wants to be there, but I hope he changes his mind as he's one of the last of our players who have made the journey from league 1

24.) Whatever happens with Morgan Schneiderlin, we fans need to remember this is Ronald Koeman's Saints. Some players will leave. He wants to build his team. Every manager does. He has already stated there will be more new signings. Forster and the lad from Steau Bucharest look like at least putting pressure on the first team's current incumbents and they are negotiating for a World Cup finalist

25.) 09 Aug 2014 09:09:14
Saint Dez- my understanding is that Saints valuation for Morgan is around £27m and Spuds have offered around £10m. Now, these figures may not be totally accurate but I believe are not too far out. Do we really want to be seen not only as a selling club but even worse, as one who gives away their best players?
Whilst this is part of the issue, the biggest factor IMO is that at some point the club had to say there is a timescale beyond which it will not sell core players. If not, late sales of players without adequate time to replace them could seriously erode RKs ability to keep the club going forward. Spuds and Morgan have had plenty of time to negotiate with Saints and I have no sympathy for the fact they haven't utilised it and Saints have said-"no more".

26.) Agree Armstrong. You know I would love to have been a fly on the wall when cortese announced his resignation to the squad and MoPo.

We would have lost some players I am sure to 'bigger' but apart from the alleged non payment of bonuses to the players (wonder if it was ever agreed with owner)? there is a feeling here of someone who has put the boot in with players because they did not get their way with the club.

06 Aug 2014 12:28:16
Fonte has told Portuguese media that he is in negotiations over his contract. Though I cannot see it discussed anywhere, that is a potential reason to therefore speculate the same is happening for Cork.

Saint90

04 Aug 2014 21:49:50
Italian media reckon Taider has signed his contract and Saints will announce it tomorrow. Given that he has been mentioned numerous times over the last few weeks, seeing is believing now.

Saint90

1.) I heard he is undergoing medical tomorrow and if he passes will sign straight after

2.) This transfer will only happen if Ramierez leaves to join Genoa on Loan

3.) Ramirez is going no where!! Koeman will get the best out of him.

04 Aug 2014 09:18:47
Demetri Mitchel on loan from Manchester United and Tottenham's Nacer Chadli being offered for Schneiderlin

Rumours aside, I was hoping to see these signings Saints were meant to make this weekend. Hopefully announcements will be made today.

Saint90

1.) If we are only interested in cheap loans at the moment, I'm afraid this means Leihber and co are saving all player sales money for when they sale the club off, I hope the wool has not been pulled over big rons eyes

2.) 04 Aug 2014 12:30:01
I think it follows the way Saints did business last season. Osvaldo was a bit of a wildcard choice and yet we spend £15m on him. If Saints had loaned him in instead it would only have been 6-12 months wages spent. That is probably £1.5-2m, but he would have gone back and both parties would have moved on. Instead of a £1.5-2m loss we are instead probably going to lose around £7-10m. As a business it is better to loan in players, especially if our youngsters step-up within the year and do better than the loan signings.

Buying players makes for a better club statements for sure, but we also don't want to do what Tottenham did, even though Saints are capable of it.

3.) 04 Aug 2014 12:56:09
I think the players we have got in on loans with the potential to buy are great ideas. I hope to hell we are buying a few. We need players in all three areas who want to play for the club and badge. I am concerned that we were told 2 SIGNINGS would be announced and to all intents and purposes they are loans. However. Ihave little doubt wheels are turning. let's face it, we are being linked to every player in the world from neynar to keegan lol. Whilst I think the papers ate just lazily linking us to all fringe players I think we will get a few in. I am praying as I type this

4.) Koeman did say "hopefully" we can get 2 or 3 signings done on the weekend. Nothing was definate, and after the silent arrival of bertrand I don't think anybody but the club knows what is happening behond the scenes. Hopefully more will come sooner rather then later

5.) As difficult as it is, we need to remain patient. Saints are in a strong position, and will be able to bring in decent quality replacements.

To be honest, I don't mind how we spend the cash, so long as we do well this year. If we have cash left over after the transfer window, I won't be surprised, or upset. We just need to get behind the players on the field.

6.) There is a lot of work being done by Southampton to bring in players

But you can't force players to sign.

Rojo's agent is touting him to a number of other clubs, trying to provoke concrete bids.

7.) Saint90. everyone keeps saying we don't want to do what spurs did last season. Why? They finished 6th didn't they? 2 places and a fair number of points higher than us. I'd be ecstatic with that! Lol

8.) 04 Aug 2014 15:58:02
A team that spent £100m plus wages on a team that did not get further than the play-offs in the Europa cup and only made 6th in the league is a flop. Lucky for them they made £90m on PL prize money and TV showings. However, the previous year they spent £60m and reached 5th. The year before that they were 4th and only spent £8m.

Tottenham fell down because clubs knew they had the money from the Bale sale last year. Prices were inflated for players that in the end didn't really cut it. Whether Levy can afford that, I am not certain, but I doubt it as he has only spent £7.5m so far this season.

Saints finished 8th spending £36m. The year before we spent £32m on getting 14th place. This year other clubs know we have money and are driving hard bargains to over-inflate player prices. Saints are not going to give in just to get the players in. Saints are probably putting aside £57m for outstanding transfer fees, loans and to pay off the training facility instead, but that leaves about £40m to work on new signings. If we spend £40m this year and are able to maintain last year's position that is still better business than Tottenham who spent £150m to fall 2 places over two years.

9.) Levy does not own spurs and as far as I aware does not put any of his own money into the club. The person who affords spurs lives abroad (tax probably) and phones levy and sanctions spending.
I have read one serious article that also suggested that levy and the manager (spurs have a lot of managers so I am not just referring to mp) that on some signings they have had no say.

Some of the remarks that Tim Sherwood made while he was keeping the seat warm for MP could be seen to back this up.

10.) 05 Aug 2014 11:44:23
ENIC Group owns 85% share capital in Spurs. Levy owns ENIC Group with Joe Lewis, although Lewis owns his part through Tavistock Group. Unless Lewis is the guy abroad that you mention, Levy is the main owner of Spurs and, as Chairman, is responsible for all the day-to-day business of Spurs.

Levy does have a board of directors through. Franco Baldini was one such director who was made responsible for most of the transfer decisions. Both Levy and Baldini overruled AVB on some of the player choices and AVB was made to work with them. That did not work and AVB lost his job.

To say that Levy had no say on the signings is just not right. I am curious about the source of that info though.

11.) Source BBC football preview from monday evening last season. journalist for either the times or the telegraph (sorry cannot remember) when in discussion about the management merry go round at spurs.

May have not heard correctly of course but that is what I remember.

And yes lewis was the guy mentioned as living abroad and phoning in the decisions.

Will be interesting to see how MoPo gets on particularly if by xmas they are not in the running.

12.) Just google relevant search themes to confirm who owns spurs. Yes it was Lewis mentioned on the BBC and he would appear to be very much in control of ENIC. Hope that helps.

13.) 07 Aug 2014 21:27:13
Just seen that Celtic might go through due to Legia Warsaw using a player that wasnt eligible to play. what's the word in the Forster deal if this is the case?

01 Aug 2014 19:17:55
Saints are apparently discussing a deal for Liverpool's Brazilian defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva. That isn't a position I would have thought we would need another player for though myself.

Saint90

1.) Just read the same thing. Under rated player in my opinion.

2.) That'll be Schneiderlin off, then.

Lucas wouldn't join to be back up, so I think it puts a big question mark over Wanyama's future too, as Koeman so far has only played one holding midfielder.

Lucas has had a couple of serious knee injuries and is a shadow of the promising player he once was.

Don't think this would be a great move for Saints.

3.) Hope that's not true, last position we need to strengthen

4.) Think if we were looking to strengthen midfield then we would move for clasie. Nothing in this rumour

5.) Actually, I can't see this being true. He's on £65k a week at Liverpool, which would make him Saints' highest earner, assuming he's not going to take a pay cut.

Are Saints really going push the boat out for an injury ravaged player in a position they've got plenty of cover for?

I suppose nothing should come as a surprise after this summer's shenanigans, but this would certainly be a weird transfer. DMC is not a priority right now.

6.) Doubt this is true but I really hope not. Never rated him at all. Frankly everytime I've watched him he's been crap. Don't think he's any better than spider, cork, Wanyama or JWP. Plus as previously mentioned he would be on massive wages. What's the point?

7.) 02 Aug 2014 07:18:37
Anyone else worried this may be part of an exchange deal for Morgan. If so we would really be becoming Liverpool development squad

8.) So what if develope kids for Liverpool. If they continue you pay us 25 million a player then we can use that money to increase capacity and develop even more from our youth academy. Their will become a stage when our capacity allows us to compete with the top six clubs and then Europen football will follow. We have to do this in the correct way or we could end up like Leeds. Exciting times ahead, we just need to be patient

Daily Mail reckon we have had a £9.5m bid for Rojo rejected. Will be interesting to see if Saints do increase their bid in anyway. However, I somehow feel they will not go higher than £10m and so will not go back in for him. Doyen Sports clearly feel they will get more money elsewhere. It's not the end of the window yet, so this may yet develop further.

Reina set for Bayern Munich, which I believe kills the rumour of Boruc leaving for that position. Not that I believed that would have happened with Boruc anyway.

Saint90

1.) Is/was Reina not a Liverhampton player?

If so then they will need Boruc to join for £20m.

As a Saints fan, I do not appreciate this article stirring up the situation even more. In terms of pre-season performances we are top of the table out of all the premier league teams. Other signings are going to come in. Koeman is an honest and to-the-point manager and is getting the team to work very well together despite the circumstances. We don't need any more of this stirring.

Saint90

1.) Ignore it. It's regurgitated waffle and factually incorrect in places. Ben Smith hasn't had a good word for Southampton Football Club since Cortese left.

2.) 'we are top of the league in pre-season against other premiership teams '

Another deluded Spurs fan. What a ridiculous statement that is.

3.) 01 Aug 2014 13:13:52
Reading can be learnt, you know. He is not a Spurs fan and you quoted him incorrectly. Apart from that your post was really worthwhile!

31 Jul 2014 22:17:00
Koeman is saying he hopes to have two or three more signings done by this weekend following the win over Brighton. Heard the team was playing well and so any further signings can only be a great bonus. Seeing how we do against Bayer Leverkusen will truly show where we stand for the coming season. Hope the signings are completed in time for that, let alone for the Liverpool game.

Seems like a good choice. I would be curious to see if he does go for the reported £5.5m though. He was bought for £4m from Nuremberg and has 3 years left on his current 5-year deal. That would make him quite a coup.

Depends on Doyen Sports investment company, as they apparently own 75% of Rojo's contract. With him rumoured to be targets for Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea it may be the case Doyen Sports hold out for them to come in, in which case we should say that is our last offer, take it now or don't expect us to come back.

Saints have valued Rojo at £10m. Sporting CP and his agent are demanding £16m. We have said take it or leave it, as for a defender with 2 years left on his contract, having previously been bought for £3.5m, is not worth £8m a year. So now the agent is punting Rojo around for a better deal. It may come to it that they come back to us, but Saints may say no we gave you the offer and you did not take it. We do not have the budget to flutter £16m on a defender, and neither should we have to spend that amount. Van Dijk may be more willing to go for £10m but at the moment nothing further has been mentioned about him moving.

People will always moan. Fact of life. I admire their passion but not their logic. Liebherr and and Lowe are leagues if not worlds apart. In a strange sense though you have to thank Lowe for bringing Saints down so Liebherr could send them back up. Liebherr would not have come in had Lowe actually turned it around.

Sentiment aside, Liebherr has the money to back the club up. Now is the point that we are coming out of the club making £ms losses and so Liebherr is now hoping the club can sustain itself without further injection of funds. The new training ground should start paying back if the £90m generated has not already done so; depends how the funds are distributed as there are other debts. We are giving out honest valuations on deals and are negotiating hard to get the right people in. Pellè, Tadić and Bertrand have looked as new signings. Taïder comes with a reputation that should be good for Saints. Isgrove, McQueen, Reed, McCarthy and Targett have all looked good, if not great, in preseason as well. Ward-Prowse is coming along spectacularly. To top that off as well, Saints have not said their business has been concluded for this window. There is still activity yet to come. Also with the no 5 and 7 shirts not being filled I am sure they are being saved for particular reasons.

Patience is a virtue. Saints fans need a hell of a lot of it. I believe the board is working hard but the other clubs are playing hard ball.

It may be the case that clubs at the end of the window finally given in, or we say too late you had an offer and you left it. The art of negotiation is important, but it does put everyone on edge.

For example, Celtic are more than likely going to be knocked out of the CL qualifiers tonight. That potentially means the deals there are on again. While there is a chance of them going through though they will stay stubborn.

Liebherr is non-executive chairman despite being the owner. Ralph Krueger is the chairman. Gareth Rogers and Les Reed are part of the club's board as well. Liebherr even has a board of directors for the holding company, of which Gareth Rogers and Hans Hofstetter are part of. So no she doesn't just do as she pleases.

Those players were part of the original budget most likely yes as they have been completed first. But the loss of other players who didn't want to stay came later, so now they are working on those signings to replace them. These things take time sadly, especially since clubs know we have the money and want to inflate prices on their players.

Cortese's ambition was to get to Champions League "at all costs". Liebherr is treating this as a business where the sort of money he wanted to spend for that sort of gamble is not good business; it is just too risky.

St Mary's is not packed out every week: the average attendance in 2003, when we last did well in the PL, was higher than our average attendance last season by 1000 seats.

Sadly, St Marys is not situation in a good accessible position. Even though all the stands, apart from Itchen, can have another level added to them, bringing total capacity up another 18,000 potentially, the surrounding area cannot accommodate that amount of people: more car parking and potentially train station access would be required. It is just too much money for that investment as the 18,000 extra seats does not give the return to make it viable.

If we were to increase capacity, that would mean a different site, and investment of about £60m. Given St Marys does not sell-out, that £60m would also not get the investment return required to make it viable.

Liebherr cannot pocket the money made on the players. Also having the funds in the bank rather than in the assets (players) does not make the business good for sale; it makes it worth less than what it could be. So no KL won't be selling the club; not any time soon anyway.

Money will be put on the signings, but there is no point in wasting it on players that could potentially flop (see Tottenham). Osvaldo would have been better loaned in instead of forking out £15m.

The aim is to get into Champions League and get a share of the €909m pot that was distributed to the participating teams. That makes the business a much better prospect for selling, with the commercial backing and sponsorship that comes with that, but right now it is not even European-bound.

Time is of the essence now. If we keep making £92m on player sales every year that is good business, especially on £9m investment on those players. Doing that for the next few years to then have enough money to justify stadium expansion and top-player signings for Champions League is probably going to be the way of it.

Financial constraints meaning readjustment for sustainable business objectives. Therefore players cannot be offered bigger wage packets, so they looked for moves where they are on offer. Since we did not need to sell them though, we received double up to quadruple their worth. Koeman gets a clean slate with the players that want to stay plus any signings he wishes to use to build a team that is his own. This could go on for years given FFP; until we are in a position where we are in a European spot and start receiving the benefits of that. It could be a roller-coaster of a ride for the next few seasons but this happens to teams who do well but are not in the top positions. However, seeing how Koeman has done well with the team in pre-season, despite the background issues, and with the promise of further signings I'm waiting to see how we perform against Bayer 04 Leverkusen to really see how we will do this season.

Saint90
