Just read that we have put in a late bud and beaten Newcastle to sign Toby Alderweild!! Please, please be true!

Saintmatty

31 Aug 2014 15:39:21
£11.8m bid put in for Salzburg Midfielder Sadio Mane. First I have heard about this. Anyone know anything about him other than Senagalese and 22 years old?

Saintmatty

1.) Straight out of left field, that one. Only seen him on the youtubes. Quick, direct winger, good with both feet, scores goals.

Couldn't say if he'd be worth nearly as much as the mighty Shane Long, but for a youngster he looks (on slim evidence) a potentially exciting investment.

Certainly an interesting development.

2.) 31 Aug 2014 15:50:11
Don't know much about him, I know he's very very pacey (something we need) and he's scored 45 goals in 86 games, not a bad return from midfield

3.) Saw this on newsnow. which also reports that Taider is set to return to Italy.

4.) Got a good scoring record from midfield but not seen him play

5.) Bid for Mane has been accepted

17 Aug 2014 12:27:48
Just heard we have put in a bid for Andros Townsend! I for one would love him to sign. Thoughts?

Saintmatty

1.) 17 Aug 2014 12:56:05
Anyone who dosnt believe this, SSN reported it

2.) Lets hope so, that would pave the way for Morgan Schniedelin to go the other way as an exchange (not a sale) so therefore saving face for the Board. As long as we get say £10 million plus Andros Townsend I think that would be a deal!

3.) 17 Aug 2014 13:12:29
Why do you want schniderlin to go he's the best player we have got, just forget it and move on

4.) Would be quality and 10m is a good fee. it will never be a player swap. spider stays.

5.) Spuds won't let Townsend go and if they do they will use it to get spider. We have enough in midfield with victor and cork . If we could swap and get the 10 million also makes good sense

6.) 17 Aug 2014 14:24:22
Spider has to stay. Should have been captain but fonte deservedly got it after spiders outburst. People slate fonte but he is quality and very commanding at the back. He makes mistakes as does everyone but those that think he's not good enough for the first team need to watch him at fame at St Marys watch his moment off the ball his commanding and organising of the back 4. Spider is irreplaceable at the back. Cork is good cover for him. Similar players in my opinion and wanyama is a brick wall.

7.) 17 Aug 2014 15:28:06
Fonte was excellent today

8.) 17 Aug 2014 15:35:11
amazing game what a start to the season last third link up and right wing + 1 solid defender we are in the mix very impressed the potential with jelling.
some great steps up from the younger guys amazing job Ron! only + going forward guys law of attraction should give us great clout in the last few weeks of the transfer window!

9.) Plus what's the deal on Bertram great game! long shows promise and tadic was a handfull if we can link up pelle. . .

10.) 17 Aug 2014 15:46:07
I thought JWP was quality at times but also lacked a bit of strength and wasn't quite the full ticket. Showed a lot of potential today

11.) JWP seriously lacked confidence in shooting I thought but good build up play.

12.) Full of confidence for the season. Get 2 that Rk wants and we are there! Spider has to stay! A draw was a fair result today but this game isn't always fair!

13.) I felt Tadic and JWP stood out. Both had great games. And Morgan too

14.) 3 words Amaaaaziing. proud. unlucky.
Top 4 performance immensely proud.

15.) Spidy to me looked like he didn't want to be here, last season hw wouldn't off missed the henderson tackle that led to first, really do need a organising calming cb though and some pace on the wing, jury will be out on pelle for a good 10 games looked bit lost but its a massive jump into epl all in all reasonably happy but same story as last year. . if only those chances

16.) 17 Aug 2014 17:59:42
Well proud to be a saint today - didn't deserve 0 points! Wanyama was excellent, Spiders passing was spot on. (and the crossbar was 1mm to low)! Tadic skimmed Lovren to get the assist. Fonte looked assured, Clyne looked like he should have gone to Brazil, Pelle was nails. Boys, well chuffed - made Liverhampton to look standard and away from home. Well proud!! good times ahead :)

17.) Defo needed done more width on the right. Townsend would fit perfectly IMO Shame we had a poor 45 mins as we could have got points from that game

18.) 17 Aug 2014 18:49:12
Not sure how we lost that game, we were by far and away the better team. Yoshida not quite good enough but thought Tadic, Clyne, Wanyama were outstanding. Heard when asked about Schneiderlin staying Koeman said " we hope so " which sounds like possibly not. Heard about the Townsend rumour, he's good but get's a lot of injuries and we have a thin squad. He is worth having though if he stays fit. Pelle looked a bit like a fish out of water today and crying out for someone that can play off him. Looking forward to next Saturday, that's when we really can tell what we've got. Liverpool were very lucky today but they scored 2 and we didn't.

19.) If Spider doesn't go now he'll go at the end of the season. We're in transition now so let him go and give Corky the game time. JC's a perfect replacement and if he's getting time. on the pitch he'll want to stay.

20.) Possibility Townsend could come to saints as we now poch hates wingers,

21.) Townsend is a decent player but I still think we can do better: konoplyanka for one

22.) Tonsend is greedy spurs fans don't rate him and want him gone!

23.) Townsend bid rejected. And I don't care wot anyone else says wanyama was the best player in a saints shirt for me today, more of that big vic!

24.) First up top performance and I think we were all a little nervous with how we would perform with all the changes. Yes no points but a lot of my mates who are Liverpool fans were full of praise of the saints.
Bertrand was quality and tadic will when settled in prove a more then able replacement to Lallana. Spider was top notch and victor was as good as I have seen him in saints colours. Yes we need the new centre half to get fit but also I really really think Fonte stepped up to captains role and looked amazing - a performance I wasn't sure was in him so I'll back off him!! Forester though not really worked looked a monster so after all the change and with perhaps a player or two more joining I'm starting to think we could be top ten again. Fair play Koeman in u we trust

25.) Let us not forget that Spider has only been training for 1 week, unlike the others, but he still played well even if not match fit!

26.) Big Vic was superb today. Spider though was excellent and I think we have some home grown talent that are as good as Townsend rather than a swap deal if that is on the cards. Would rather spend the cash on a top notch central defender to play alongside Fonte.
Great second half performance by the team after a shakey first 45. If we had taken the two chances we would have come away as deserved winners.

27.) Wanyama was a different player, 100 times better on the ball and was actually completing passes. I think he will show why we payed that money for him this season

28.) Really agree with the Wanyama comments here. I was a fierce critic of his last season. He didn't adjust to the PL and was a liability at times. We looked better with Cork in the side than Big Vic. Yesterday though he was an absolute rock. If that is a taste of things to come he will be vital for us this season

29.) Gardos will start next to fonte.

15 Aug 2014 18:16:57
Van Dijk being heavily linked with Hamburg in Germany. Snap him up quickly RoKo.

Saintmatty

1.) I think vlaar is the better option. we need a bit more PL experience in the squad.

2.) VVD completely unproven. From what I have seen I'm not sure he would be a patch on vlaar. Pretty sure vlaar is staying with villa, don't you just hate player loyalty!

3.) I think we need proven leaders in our team and VVD isn't proven at a high enough level for me

4.) 16 Aug 2014 21:11:20
I didn't know much about gardos, but after watching clips and seeing what sb fans have said about him, I think he could be a hidden gem. He looks very comfortable on the ball, technically very good. With fonte being captain, I assume he will be 1st choice. I remember typing similar optimistic comments about lovren b4 last season.

5.) Vlaar is likely off to united imo.

6.) 17 Aug 2014 06:00:41
Koeman now saying that we are not after another cb

7.) 17 Aug 2014 08:50:12
If Yoshida and Fonte are our only choices at centre back as Gardos is out injured for a while yet god help us. I think they will have to hand out blindfolds when we go through the turnstiles at St Marys. I am a total supporter of the club but just think we have addressed most positions on the field apart from the one we were already weak in even when Lovren was still here. One injury or suspension and then what, Hooiveld??? Scary stuff.

8.) 17 Aug 2014 09:04:23
Can somebody please explain to me why we sold Calum Chambers, watched him play for Arsenal yesterday at CB and he looked very comfortable on the ball. Let's face it he can play anywhere by the look of it. I now think that was the worst bit of business we did this summer especially if you believe the ECHO ( which invariably I don't ) report on Koeman saying no more CB's. However nobody else has reported him saying this. If Chambers was still here he would have been in front of Yoshida by a mile based on his performance yesterday. Getting pretty concerned about our likely goals against column.

9.) Firstly because he said he wanted to leave.
Secondly because 16m for a player who didn't want to be here, and only had 19 games under his belt was too good to turn down.
Thirdly because he had a clause in his contract.
Fourthly how you going to stop a player leaving when he's going for medals and CL football.
Explained ok for you?

10.) Would have to agree with both to be fair. Totally agree about our situation with CB but chambers leaving was because we had little choice. What I was told Friday differs from what the echo has said and we are looking at another CB although I believe we have been slow over the summer in an area that needed strengthening

11.) ^^ with whom are we interested in bringing in? Cb that is?

12.) 17 Aug 2014 11:42:32
I understand what you are saying about him wanting to leave, so what is the difference between Chambers and Schneiderlin. Most of you are saying make him stay so why not have made Chambers stay, 16 million pounds is irrelevant if we concede goals by the shed load come the end of the season.

13.) I'm still wondering why he (CC) was never trialled as a central defender at saints?

14.) That's just it we never tried him at c and the board probably over looked that possibility

15.) I was told that Chambers had a get olause in his contract if there was a bid from a CL club - if that's true we had no choice

08 Aug 2014 15:16:25
Just read we have signed Florin Gardos. Centre back from Steua Bucharest. Don't know anything about him. Thoughts?

Saintmatty

1.) Interest was confirmed by RK in his press conference.

2.) 25, CB right footed, tall 194cm about same level as yoshida 😞

3.) Was once banned for 10 matches for breaking another players leg, wonder if we'll let him loose on morgan?

4.) Did you read this on SaintsWeb or elsewhere? He's solid - would be a better third choice than either Yoshida or Hooiveld, and Stephens is still too young. So far I'm yet to find a reliable source on this though. Regardless, we still need a new first choice CB to replace Lovren.

5.) 08 Aug 2014 17:31:12
He looks strong on youtube. Certainly fearless and even has a few goals. Has real potential

6.) He looks solid, can bring the ball forward, the highlights on him I watched was of him playing in the champions league and looked solid against some good teams like Chelsea and Napoli, he looks like a real coup, didn't see that one coming! And by the sound of things neither did the press

7.) 08 Aug 2014 19:11:03
Ronald Koeman confirmed in his press conference that there was interest in the player but suggested a completed deal was far from the truth.

8.) Wish people would stop using the word coup. especially when its some lad from steau bucharest.

9.) Boruc is by far a better keeper than forster, yes we need a better no2 to boruc but to spend 10 m when when our priority is a cb, part of that 10m could have been spent on upping the bid for rogo-boruc instils confidence in the defence forster lacks this at the moment, please keep boruc as no1 or I fear for us this season!

Just a thought. Does anyone else see Alderwiereld and Gardos as a younger more dynamic pairing than either of them with Fonte?

Saintmatty

1.) To be honest, it was Lovren that improved Fonte last season. Now he's gone Fonte doesn't look as comfortable with Yoshida. If we get Alderweireld then hopefully that will raise his game again. But, I'm excited about the new CB pairing if it happens.

2.) In the future, if the are good enough. But I would not discard Fonte too quickly. He is captain, given that role because he has the leadership, talent and loyalty to SFC. All this love for Lovren and how great he was, I always thought his success was because of Fonte's steady leadership at the back. Lovren has gone to scousehampton and so far has returned to his unremarkable form that he had before he came to SFC and resurrected his career. Although I don't get to attend games, but even on the telly I could see Mopo giving instructions to FONTE. This world class CB for Argentina and now coach knew Fonte was the key to the defense, giving his tactical info to him, not Lovren. At the time it just highlighted how the coaching staff has always regarded Fonte as a greater asset than most of the Saints fans on these forums. I remember many games that NA praised Fonte after the game for his commanding CB performance. He is 30 so one or two more years left before age will see him fade into the background. He should be given full honors from SFC for being through the entire journey back up the leagues and a huge part of our success so far.

3.) Well said bermuda. the new lundekvam!

17 Aug 2014 16:11:27
Bertrand and Clyne both great today but MOM was big Vic. . Immense! Overall pretty impressed but did more than enough to come away with something.

Saintmatty

1.) 17 Aug 2014 16:21:35
Totally agree I thought bar a few slip ups we looked excellent. Bit of time and I can see a lot more goals. Obvious timing and placing issues with crosses but that will come. Ward prowse worked his socks off.

Bit of luck and we would hsve won that.
Very pleased. Now let's just get the right winger

2.) 17 Aug 2014 18:10:23
And another center back. Yoshida did not look very good today (and I usually defend him), and I think we need more competition there to keep everyone at their best.

3.) Wanyama was immense in an overall strong team performance.

Two obvious areas for concern, though. Number one, a lack of pace in the side (although this was also a problem last season). A quick, quality winger can't come in soon enough.

Number two, Pelle. He's got all the mobility of a skip but half the use. Bit early to write him off, but there's a reason his career record in Italy is absolutely pitiful. I don't know how he's going to score goals if he can't actually beat anyone in the air because he sure as hell isn't beating anyone on the deck.

Still, a decent first outing for the side, and if Clyne wasn't so dozy in defence or Davis so complacent in front of goal, Saints could've come away with at least a point if not more.

4.) 18 Aug 2014 01:19:29
Bit early to write pelle off. Tbf to him he didn't get a great deal of service. Tadic showed glimpses of how good he is however his corssing was off. If we could get some good service in the shape of a right winger or Pelle could be lethal. let's give him a bit of time to adjust and step up

5.) Pelle offers so much more than just goals. obviously you would like to see him get on the end of more crosses, but that issue comes from the balls in aswell.
his strength scares defenders though. at times both skertel and lovren were drawn in to wrestle with him and a simple lay off got us in behind. overall very promising.

6.) 18 Aug 2014 11:11:40
Hate to say it but the reason we lost that game yesterday was the battle of the CB's. Lovren (hate this) was totally dominating whereas Yoshida is a tryer but just not up to this standard. If we had had a top class CB ( Ron Vlaar springs to mind immediately) there would not have been the space for Sterling or Sturridge to score the goals which let's face it were very soft.

13 Aug 2014 09:36:42
Andros Townsend said to be up for sale by the traitor MOPO. Would be a good signing for Saints I reckon.

Saintmatty

12 Aug 2014 20:51:13
Leeds in the process of signing 2 defenders. Surely means Byram is on his way. Let's just hope it's to Saints.

Saintmatty

1.) Byram included in sharp deal? Best of luck to u Billy. proven goal scorer.

2.) Yes, good luck Billy!

3.) 12 Aug 2014 23:03:05
Byram will not come to Saints, end of. Wish Billy all the best, top man.

4.) 13 Aug 2014 10:15:35
Leeds bought 2 central defenders, which isn't Byrams position

5.) Our new right back got a straight red last night so out for 3 games.
Cellino seems to drive a very hard bargain, so expect to pay near the 8mill to prize him away.
Good player if he stays fit, still a bit lightweight and had a pretty poor season last time.
I`d be very happy if we got 8mill.

01 Aug 2014 19:58:35
Just read that more talks have taken place between Saints and Liverpool! This time with a view to bringing Lucas Leiva to St Mary. I for one think he is quite under rated and would be a good signing.

Saintmatty

1.) We don't need another cm though as we have easily enough if no more players are sold
