Just seen that we have reportedly 'won the race to land Virgil van dijk from Celtic for 10mil' following his absence from their squad, hope this finally goes through so we can ditch all this ron vlaar nonsense.

The issue I have with this is that we should be able to hold onto players a bit better now than previous years! We have a super manager in Koeman, we have one of the best training facility's in Europe, along with one of the best youth academy's, we pay much better wages now and we are playing in Europe.

We are growing year on year and finishing 7th in the premier last year was amazing. I think the exodus from last year is still a massive problem in that we have set the standard and now any player in the first team that has anything like a successful season feels they can just up and leave for a bigger club.

I agree with another comment someone made on here, wanyamma is powerful yes and does protect the defence, but is not playing great so far this season, I think spider going is showing our defence out somewhat. So we need the protection. Now I actually would not have a problem with selling wanyamma for 20 mill + but to spuds, no thanks! and to let wanyamma think he can just push a move through, No thanks again!

I think we as a club are in the stronger postilion and should tell him he is seeing his contract out. Even if that means leaving for nothing at the end of it. We really need to stamp all this player leaving out because it is a like a cancer in our squad.

We decide when a player leaves, Wanyamma your staying and I would even put on the bench for a few games to teach him a lesson, let's see what Reed can do. Good luck today boys, we need those 3 points. COYR

2.) 23 Aug 2015 10:34:47
I totally agree Ben but if he was to go and for £20 million who would be his ideal replacement as I can't think of anyone that's stands out I would like Gylfi Sigurðsson but a totally different type/style of player.

3.) 23 Aug 2015 10:36:16
Wanyama should understand the damage he's doing asking for a move at such a crucial time,if it is true that he has asked for a move. He has signed a contract. Keep him and all the others to their contracts. If their performances aren't up to scratch, stick them in with the Under 18's to learn some humility. Frankly I am sick to the back teeth of disrespectful, unintelligent, greedy, self absorbed twenty somethings treating SFC like a shop window. We need strength in leadership, from the very top down and right now. Where necessary, players like the departed Schneiderlin and wantaway Wanyama should be FORCED to see out their contracts. In the reserves, if necessary. No player is bigger than the club.

4.) 23 Aug 2015 10:39:56
I agree with everything you said Ben apart from the bit about putting him on the bench to teach him a lesson. Sure, he may allegedly want to leave, but swapping a big physical player like him with bags of talent and a cool head for a young midfielder who's only played a few matches so far is a bit risky especially with our defensive record so far.

I'm all for telling Wanyama to button it and put up like Spider did, but at the end of the day he's human and if he wants to go, then he can go - but we'll find a replacement. Rafa Silva springs to mind if he does part ways. Similar style of player, except Wanyama is more physical.

Les Reed said if a world class opportunity became available we'd be in the financial position to do it, why not go all out and try to sign Gundogan? He's at the same level as U.S. In Europe, wanted to leave until recently and isn't exactly in the first team picture right now at Dortmund. Would be amazing if we did pick him up but I doubt we could ever meet his wage demands though :(

H

I agree wholeheartedly with saint- ben this problem could have and should have been dealt with 2 seasons ago,Lallana, Shaw,Lovren, should have been told you are all on 3/5 year contracts you are staying end of conversation.

The club wouldn't be in this position had they been more stronger, it now seems every player who feels he should be playing more often tells his agent to look for a bigger club, and alert the press that one of the big clubs are interested in him, this starts a bidding war with wages Saints can't compete with.

The big 6 clubs know this and have systematically dismantled Southampton's football squad, unfortunately Saints are now seen as cannon fodder and gutless, the bigger teams now seem to think they only have to snap their fingers, and a Saints player will be on their books, because the management won't put up much of a fight to keep them, and its no good hiding behind the old chestnut that if a player wants to go he will eventually get his way, I know its more difficult to keep an unsettled player these days but some where you have to draw the line and show these players that the club will not tolerate the tail wagging the dog

Can you tell me any other club who have allowed eight players Clyne, Chambers,Shaw, Lovren, Spider, Cork, Lallana, Lambert, to be transferred out in two seasons, and all Internationals four of them to the same club, I have been supporting Saints for 55 yrs and a general football fanatic for a few years longer and its never been allowed to happen anywhere else.
There is something seriously wrong with this football club, and sooner or later the fans will have had enough how can you say were building for the next level and then sell your complete team it just don't add up.

It may be to late but this club needs to make a stand, inform Victor that he is staying and if he doesn't like it stick him in the A team and he can play with the under eighteens for the rest of his contract he will soon change his attitude, its not as if KL needs the money the club then might gets back a bit of credibility.

Seen one or two posts suggesting we are interested in signing Lucas Silva the Brazilian midfielder from real Madrid, don't see why we would need him after already signing clasie and romeu though. Thoughts?

StJames

1.) 21 Aug 2015 13:39:58
Seems as though Harry Reed's off on a season-long loan somewhere.

Which would only leave four fit midfielders in the squad.

No idea if the Silva rumour has legs, but it'd be crazy to thin the herd even more if they weren't planning on bringing someone else in.

2.) 21 Aug 2015 14:04:53
would be some signing. this may be down to victors contract situation.

3.) 21 Aug 2015 14:59:23
Cant see Big Vic renewing when the time comes.

4.) 21 Aug 2015 16:49:30
i agree. he is replaceable though, not the same class as spider.

5.) 21 Aug 2015 18:29:13
I disagree esso I think he plays a different style to spider both complimented each other on the park

6.) 21 Aug 2015 18:59:02
i agree they play different styles but wanyama is not a 25m player.

7.) 21 Aug 2015 19:20:45
Wanyama's all brawn. Without Schneiderlin's brain and tactical discipline alongside him, his shortcomings have been quite exposed.

He'd struggle at a major club.

8.) 22 Aug 2015 11:39:09
He'd be alright at Spurs then qwerty!

07 Aug 2015 15:28:44
Newsnow shows that vvd has started following pelle and big vic on twitter, as well as the official bpl page too, hopefully this is a sign of things to come, also, its suggested roko may not travel to Newcastle with squad due to injury.

So what's the deal with our transfer business right now? As far as I'm concerned it seems we aren't serious about signing anyone right now, though we need a centre back similar to Toby's level, and possibly a wanyama esc midfielder and maybe a winger, does anyone know of any solid rumours for players?

StJames

1.) 22 Jul 2015 23:33:04
We've signed 5 players before July and we've now got at least 2 decent players in every position, I think with the exception of another centre back the squad is pretty much done.

2.) 23 Jul 2015 01:07:40
Do you know who our centre back priority is, van dijk perhaps or vlaar?

{Ed007's Note - I'll say it's Van Dijk, Vlaar is far too much of a risk for a team like Southampton who can't afford any passengers if they're going to try and kick on next season.}

3.) 23 Jul 2015 11:09:42
Hear me out guys! i'm going to say something that might seem like i'm moaning,Im not really but just making more of an observation. Iam actually happy with our transfer dealing so far in the window but would just love to see 2 key areas strengthened.

It does annoy me though when people say we have strengthened the squad, if you actually look at who we have brought in you could argue most if not all are straight replacements for personnel who have left the club.

1: Forster for Steklenburgh
2: Alderweireld for?
3: Clyne for Cedric Soares
4: Schneiderlin for Clasie
5: Elia (loan) for Rodriguez
6: Duricic (loan) for Juan Miguel Jiménez López (Will not be played as a striker as some people keep saying)
7: Jack Cork for?

The only player to come in and not replace a player leaving is Cuco Martina. I personally think we need an out and out striker to help Pelle, as we found out last season he can't do it all on his own, I know people will disagree but central defence and a striker for me and I would be happy with the squad along with the youth pool to pick from.

Would love to see Charlie Austin in a saints shirt but I know i'm dreaming. What does every one else think? Edds?

4.) 23 Jul 2015 12:16:28
Harry reed is the replacement for cork. J-rod will be used as the main striker this season as well as out wide. We have 6 forwards! (including Sam Gallagher who I hope will be given a chance this season) which should allow koeman to rest pelle when needed and give us other options. I really don't understand fans who aren't happy unless we start throwing money around. 15 million on Austin to be a back up striker? J-rod is obviously an improvement on elia (if he regains previous form) juanmi has more potential and positive reviews than duricic. Soares already looks twice the player Clyne was in the last 3-4 months of last season. Clasie is pretty much a like for like for schniederlin. That's why we've improved the squad.

5.) 23 Jul 2015 12:56:04
You did not read my post properly Milkysaint, I said i'm happy with the youth pool to pick from! Harry Reed is not a replacement for Cork, it was common knowledge we wanted to replace cork with vilhena (Edds?) but there have been circumstances that have made that not possible for now.

J-Rod will not be played as the main strike?? Pelle will be played as the main striker. And I don't get how you can say our new recruits are better than the players that have left? we will have to wait and see on that comment ( obviously I hope they are better than clyne, spider, toby.)

And when I talk about improving the squad I was talking about bodies! numbers!! as we are going to be playing in Europe and there is the possibility of playing a lot more games in the coming season. Yes we will play youth players and that is good, but we Defiantly need a central defender of at least Tobys quality and I was just saying I would love to see Austin ALTHOUGH I KNOW i'm DREAMING!!!

6.) 23 Jul 2015 15:59:05
Not sure whether we need a much bigger squad. Chelsea did OK playing a small squad last season.

Keeping a tight squad makes maintaining team spirit much easier as you have fewer players always sitting on the bench and becoming bitter. (Why did Cork want to leave?)

I think you will find Les has already commented on this, and made it pretty clear the club wants players ready and champing at the bit to play twice a week throughout the season if required. Always a difficult balance but I would not expect more than a couple more signings (unless we move someone else on.)

7.) 23 Jul 2015 17:21:58
I am occasionally astonished at how clueless some people are to the project, our philosophy and our youth players coming through. "Let's just buy loads of players for silly money and go completely against what we've been talking about from day one."
Seriously, research the club, listen to less reed. Trust the management and the board. What makes you think throwing money at a squad is an instant certainty of success? It's not!

We need a centre back. Agreed. I have a feeling if a very pacy and promising winger became available to loan then we might step in too. Otherwise our squad is good. Potentially better than last year.

St Martin is right when he says that cork left last year because he wasn't first choice for us and wouldn't get a game ahead of Morgan and big vic. What is the point in us spending more money to bring someone in that will probably be in the same situation and end up unhappy and possibly disrupting squad morale. Does it not make more sense to say "we have some good youth players in that position. Let's make one of the nippers back up, and give him a chance. If he takes that chance and steps up then we have a replacement without spending anything, and we have given another Young English lad a chance to make it. Something not many other clubs are doing.

Austin is being offered massive wages (60k a week from Newcastle) so how can we compete with that?! We're a club that believes in potential. So let's give our youth a chance to impress! Why is everyone so obsessed with Austin!?!?!

8.) 23 Jul 2015 17:33:19
I read your post just fine Basingstoke. I think you need to read mine properly! I said j-rod will be used as main striker AS WELL AS OUT WIDE! The front players are more versatile than other positions, and I think we will see more of j-rod down the middle with others playing off of him. As his career progresses that's where he will end up. Plus there is Gallagher as the understudy.

So we could have a front line of;
Mane-pelle-j-rod
Long-pelle-j-rod
Juanmi-j-rod-mane and even
long/juanmi-gallagher-mane/j-rod.

That's If we play with 3 up. We have so many more options than last year. Charlie Austin will add nothing, cost too much money, and block the path of our youngsters.

But that's just my opinion.

9.) 23 Jul 2015 20:59:27
Vilhena is an attacking midfielder, the tadic, Juanmi, hesketh kind, not a defensive midfielder. Reed is Corks replacement (and every bit as good)

10.) 23 Jul 2015 21:32:54
I don't get it. Yes, we have replaced a majority of those going out with other players bar Cork and Toby. but why is no one picking up on the fact that last season, especially towards the end, we struggled with squad numbers. without Europe. We certainly need more. I am hoping (HOPING) for at least 3. Centre back, Right Winger and Striker. Striker I know, we have a few, but praying Sam goes out on loan for another season and we buy a goalscorer. Pelle, Long and Juanmi are not goalscorers. Look at how well Villa have done with Benteke. Imagine if we had a player like that.

11.) 23 Jul 2015 23:28:33
It wasn't necessarily a lack of squad depth really, it was the lack of creativity we had, teams figured us out and we just couldn't score goals when we needed them.

We seem to fixed a lot of those problems and look to have a much more intelligent and varied team this year in terms of opening other teams up, Soares varies his runs and gets into space where Tadic/Mane/whoever else can lay it off to him, where Clyne would make similar overlapping runs all game. Clasie can play inch perfect passes over/through defences for a quicker player to run onto, that's something we lacked last season, teams that liked to play an offside trap stopped us dead, we should be able to combat that now. We've got a lot of quick players too, if any combo of J-Rod, Pelle and Mane/Tadic/Juanmi/Ramirez/Long can get a similar thing going to Lambert/J-Rod and Lallana, we could be very dangerous this year. Not only that, J-Rod should gain us 10-15 at least this season alone

Barring a centre back (although I believe Yoshida is more than good enough) or 2 now Gardos is out until after Xmas, we have a very good squad

Europa league is nothing to fear, if we play a team of mainly youth and players who don't see a lot of first team action in the FA Cup and League cup the Europa league will be no different to a cup run like last season

12.) 23 Jul 2015 23:35:27
When I said j-rod as main striker, I meant as the alternative to pelle. Pelle will be the main man through the middle, but if he gets injured or needs a rest then j-rod will be his replacement, as well as competing for one of the wide roles

13.) 24 Jul 2015 10:56:10
There is no way that Charlie Austin would move to our club to sit on the bench.
And I can't see him starting in front of Pelle.
We have great striking options, better than most of the teams around us in the league as stands.

If it goes throught which I think is very unlikely, perhaps it could tie in with a swap deal for januzaj? As the club have said they are prepared to loan him out. Still think this won't happen no matter what the bid is, but after the last 2 summers you never know.

Apparently vvd told voetball international that he is urging Celtic to consider premier league offers as he thinks he is better than Scottish league football and wants to get into the national team, I think as long as we don't spend too much on him it could be a great signing
