The rumour is that arsenal won’t be offering Walcott a deal, so he’ll probably have to accept a drop in wages. Price is said to be 12m - 15m which may be worth a gamble. West Ham United are after him as well apparently, and will probably out bid us for wages. And he’ll probably want to stay in London.

Hey Eds, seeing a few reports of interest in Jan Bednarek and a couple saying we've actually made a bid.

Is there any itk knowledge you could let us have, or is it just speculation 'cos we're on the list of scouts at the U21 Champs?

Is there any there any other interest in him that could scupper us?

Cheers.

WanderingSaint

{Ed002's Note - I don't know, sorry.}

So, Liverpool are apparently now interested in Tadic! Release fee of £13m quoted (I know Eds, I know) . What does everyone think? Happy to let him go? Fight to keep him? Meh?

It really does seem like their scouting dept - if one actually exists - is using a broken/ stuck sat nav and every time they look for a player they end up here.

WanderingSaint

Would be ecstatic to see him go. Awful player that is too hyped up.

2.) 11 Jun 2017 13:19:19
Wouldn't have any issue with him being sold as he's such a frustrating player to watch. 13 mil seems a bit light in the current market though, and I find it hard to believe he's a fit for Klopp's style given his sometimes questionable work rate.

3.) 11 Jun 2017 14:09:56
Think a lot of this stems from Puel - if he goes, maybe Tadic wont? Having said that, Boufal with a pre season in him is a straight swap and Tadic must have been frustrated as all of us were, as there was no one in the box to actually pass to this season, unlike Pelle last year.

4.) 11 Jun 2017 16:12:25
I hope they have permission even to look out of the southward facing windows at anfield.

5.) 12 Jun 2017 09:02:29
Does it feel like it's just a signing for the sake of it. Liverpool don't really need him, since they've got loads of attacking players. But if we could get between 15-20 mil for a player that turns up like 4 times a season it would be another great piece of business.

6.) 12 Jun 2017 10:28:27
when will we really rid ourselves of liverpool when?

7.) 12 Jun 2017 11:20:56
Don't have to sell tadic has gone down hill since Pelle left he is a great crosser of the ball and needs a target come knock down man to show his full potential if he goes he goes if he stays he stays. If we sell him would hope it would be for more than 13m although not sure he suits Liverpool style anyway.

8.) 12 Jun 2017 11:29:12
If you could get 1M for him it would be good business. Temperamental, lazy, greedy, petulant . 95% of the time
Unplayable . 5% of the time ie when he feels like it.

9.) 13 Jun 2017 08:29:11
👏👏👏👏.

10.) 13 Jun 2017 22:47:47
We will never rid ourselves of Liverpool picking off our key players, unless they start turning them down! We need to become a more attractive option for players. We are just a stepping stone unfortunately.

Eds, I'm reading that we're interested in Joe Hart as Everton are keen on Forster. Any truth in this?

Personally I'd be happy with it.

WanderingSaint

{Ed002's Note - I am aware of two goalkeepers that Everton has shown an interest in but neither are Fraser Forster. I am not aware of any interest in Joe Hart from Southampton but should the club lose FF elsewhere, then Joe Hart would be a very good option - but would he want to be playing in Europe or not? The same would likely be true for Torino who would like to sign him on a permanent basis.}

1.) 12 Mar 2017 16:03:48
Surely Everton are more interested in Hart. he'd probably cost less than forster! I'm not even harts biggest fan, but forster this year has been very poor and I worry whether his injury has effected him long term.

2.) 12 Mar 2017 16:43:36
Yeah Milky that's what i'd have thought. But there are a few other posters who think Forster is worth 6M - 7M!

Personally, I think they're both around the £15M mark. If given a choice between the two i'd have Hart.

The Europe question is the interesting one, but I get the feeling Hart would prefer to be in the EPL, but the Euro contenders all have a world class 'keeper.

I just saw 3 or 4 links to it so thought there may be something in it.

{Ed001's Note - if Forster is worth more than 50p then football is insane. Always been a dodgy keeper and always will be as his footwork is terrible.}

3.) 12 Mar 2017 17:02:38
Interesting review there ed001.

{Ed001's Note - a long time ago now I was having a discussion with a coach at Newcastle about why English footie was struggling to bring through good youngsters. He was saying about the problem being that players were being picked on their physical attributes still and mentioned a couple of players then at Newcastle that were evidence of it. One was a certain Fraser Forster, who went out on loan to Celtic just after. Anyway he was telling me his footwork was appalling but he was projected to be huge, so he was picked as youngster, when there were better options.

I have been watching him ever since, and the coach was right, he is big and imposing but his footwork is hopeless. That means he struggles to command his box, as he can't come out for crosses very easily. He struggles to get across the goal to stop shots he should easily get to with his build. He doesn't set himself well, so even those shots he does get to become more difficult and so he can often put it back into the danger area, when he should have been able to catch or clear it properly.

Interestingly, when he went to Celtic on loan, he only ended up signing a permanent deal after they were turned down by a few other keepers that Neil Lennon wanted to sign. He was almost a last resort signing in the end.}

4.) 12 Mar 2017 22:45:14
So his weakness is footwork, which I actually agree with btw, that makes him "worth 50p"? I would have though footwork was a particular easy part of the game to work on quite frankly. No?

5.) 13 Mar 2017 15:11:46
seems eds001 is a talent scout and could be the answer to the black box if it goes wrong. The reality is there are 3-4 good keepers and the rest are much of a much. Take out Courtois/ Degea and Lloris and the rest are much the same bar Butland who it remains to see how he comes back.
If we have England's 2nd choice keeper and the ex England goalie coach and we can't improve footwork its pretty sad.
as the film said opinions are like aholes and everyone has one and thinks there's don't stink. clearly saints think there is improvement to come he is certainly better than Steklenberg.

{Ed001's Note - you really are proving yourself right about people being a-holes with your comments. Why could you not disagree without being a complete tit about it? By the way, I have had numerous opportunities to work in scouting set ups in the Prem over the years, which I have chosen to reject. It is clear you have no idea what the black box actually is or what it involves, but it does involve extensive use of scouts to check out players.}

6.) 14 Mar 2017 00:09:25
In all fairness ed001, I think saying a keeper is "worth 50p" and "hopeless and always will be" is being far more of a tit than the last fellas comment. You can't needlessly tear into a southampton player and expect a southampton fan not to defend him.

{Ed001's Note - you think that was me being a tit or just exaggerating slightly to make a point? Needlessly? I pointed out what was wrong with him, nothing 'needless' about pointing out a player's deficiencies on a football forum or are you unsure of the point of a football forum? Some of you need to grow up and try a bit of objectivity in your lives. You don't have to defend a knob who gets paid huge sums of money but fails to work on his game to improve it. Why would you even want to defend someone who is stealing your, because it is you who pay his wages either directly or indirectly, money like that?}

7.) 14 Mar 2017 08:49:08
I think we are all aware the black box is a set up rather than a set too box I to was exaggerating similar to your 50p comment and clearly hit a nerve. The difference is fans always want there players to do there best and are reluctant to skate them. Clearly you are not a saints fan and feel the stick is the best method. Thanks for your insight and wisdom I have made several comments over the past couple of years about his weaknesses and he has hidden behind the defence. Unfortunately the board and coaches have heeded these so we are where we are.

{Ed001's Note - hit a nerve? No, if you had annoyed me it would have just been deleted. I certainly wouldn't have bothered to reply. I feel the stick is the right method because I have spent years watching these lazy mollycoddled tools coasting through life barely trying because they have so many fans telling them how wonderful they are, so they never feel they have to improve. They have everything handed to them on a plate and then everyone sits there wondering how come players like Kante, who had nothing but setbacks and constantly told he was not good enough become the best in their position. You don't improve by being told you are great and everything is wonderful. If a player gives 100% in training and on the pitch, then I will back them, no matter who they play for, as that is all you can ask of anyone. If they don't, then they deserve criticism.

Your academy is one of the best because it doesn't mollycoddle players to the extent that most do. Youngsters are expected to work their backsides off to stay in it. A friend of mine bombed out, his choice, because he couldn't handle it, and it was the right choice, because he is a knob who just wants to get wasted and do the bare minimum. Far too many players are just getting away with it and getting fans worshipping them on social media, Mamadou Sakho comes to mind, says the right things on social media so gets fan backing when they should be asking why the club was so desperate to get him out!

They have an opportunity to do something 99.999% of the population can only dream of and then they act like they are entitled to do what they want. Then you look at triathletes etc earning a pittance compared to them and yet dedicating themselves to their chosen discipline. If players were half as professional, the sport of football would be so much better, they would get less injuries and they would be at a much higher level.}

8.) 14 Mar 2017 10:06:11
Many thanks for your insight and opinions eds however my only point would be if the academy is that tough I struggle to believe they would stop that as soon as they make the first team. Forster came out and said he wanted to push on for England no1 this year he is probably not in the top 3 when all fit now. Hart/ butland/ heaton. If we have englands ex goalie coach and this is the case one or both should clearly go. Harry lewis has potential but they sacrificed him in the arsenal game.

{Ed001's Note - Forster came through the Newcastle academy, where it is easy, which is why it has produced a string of duds who have not made anything like the impact their ability should have done. Most of them spend half their careers injured through drinking related issues as the culture is like the 80s football one of getting hammered every chance they get.

If Forster had come through at Saints, I would expect him to have a totally different attitude. A lot does come down to needing to be pushed even when they breakthrough though. Bale, for instance, was forced to push himself as he struggled at Spurs. While Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain have coasted through their careers at Arsenal and never made improvement over the player they were when they left Southampton.

Personally I think both coach and player are at fault in this instance. Forster lacks the drive and inclination to improve and the coach is failing to inspire him to do so. But then, how do you motivate a player with no competition and huge sums of money in the bank each week? What exactly can you do to make him work harder in training?}

9.) 14 Mar 2017 12:53:01
More fans have recently been voicing their concerns recently regarding his form though? At least, that's what I've seen. Surely he knows that supporters are starting to be more vocal, plus the addition of a fifth I repeat FIFTH goalkeeper should kick him up his backside a bit more?
Puel should have the guts to drop him and give Mouez or even young Harry Lewis a chance. Players need to know that they need to work hard to get a chance to play. Although seeing that they still get paid even though they aren't currently in the frame, it would be hard to motivate them I guess.

{Ed001's Note - it would be nice to see a return to the kind of thinking George Graham used with regards to player contracts. Their salary was not very good but the win bonuses were huge.}

10.) 15 Mar 2017 11:20:48
Did they get it in plain brown envelopes?

{Ed001's Note - some of it....}

20 Jun 2015 13:38:19
Eds, do you know anything more about the Toby situation? We all know the fee was agreed but could be cancelled by Atletico for payment of circa £1.5M. Is there any deadline for us confirming we want to purchase as per the contract, or for them to say they want to pay the £1.5M?

Are you aware of the up to date position on our negotiations with both club and player? I'm hoping we've agreed player terms and are just waiting to see if Atletico accept our bid, whether we've upped it from the contractual terms or not.

WanderingSaint

{Ed001's Note - from what I can gather it would need to be done this month. That is when the football year ends and I am told that the contract would need to be done then. Though a deal doesn't have to be done by then, just they need to confirm that they are buying out the deal by then, as Southampton have made it known they wish to buy him.

As I understand it, Atletico are right now offering him around Europe trying to complete a deal which will be worth more to them than the one they agreed with you. It is likely that will be what happens to be honest, unless he digs his heels in and decides he wants to join Saints over his other options.}

1.) 22 Jun 2015 12:53:05
A few places are now reporting we are preparing an 18m bid. I can't see us spending that on anyone tbh. I hope I'm wrong. Its also being reported that Athletico want to keep him with Miranda off to inter.

2.) 22 Jun 2015 18:18:00
Well we must have some money to spend even without the sales of Clyne or Schneiderlin, given that we supposedly had bid up to £10 million for Krychowiak. So assuming our starting budget for this window was £25 million, about £10 million has now gone towards the purchase of Juanmi and Cedric. So perhaps that leaves up to £15 million to work with on any deal for Toby or another top centre back. If Atletico were to sell him at any higher figure, we'd then likely be relying on departures to put towards the fee. But I still think he is our number one target for this window and the club will do everything possible to sign him.

3.) 22 Jun 2015 21:26:20
If we only make 3 signings this summer I will get a tattoo of mr pompey on my arse.

{Ed024's Note - We'll hold you to that.}

4.) 23 Jun 2015 10:20:25
One more signing Togo buddy lol

Milky. why?

You made your point, albeit like a 6 year old girl, in your original post. It did read badly and I commented at the time along with others.

If you want snippets of info you otherwise might not get, or you want your questions answered, stop being a di**!

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the phrase used was "I fully expect VVD to leave"

Honestly don't think he's much better than the 16 year old who left us. Far too inconsistent. And still can't cross the ball, a really odd trait for wingers these days! And he's definitely not a striker. I'd like to have seen us go for Demarai Gray in that area but looks like he's been persuaded to stay at Leicster for now.

Just a striker for me. Someone on here mentioned Dzeko who would be perfect, but not realistic. Hope the club pull another blinder from leftfield like Hoedt.

Ham Valery?! He looks an awesome prospect. Don't think we need any more RBs.

Not keen on Remy and hope it doesn't happen. Seems the wrong age for us anyway? I can't see us spending big money on anyone over 26ish. Would much prefer Benteke for example. There's just not a supply of quality strikers out there, but personally think we'll still add a striker over the next 8 days. Excited to see who it will be.

I think we have the strongest squad we've had for ages. Really happy with the club's business this summer. If VVD stays, that starting back four has to be one the best in the league! And we'd only have to play one DM to protect it, a luxury Puel didn't have.

I love these itk posts from Eds. The info on the likely future of the football world given earlier this year (I think) was fascinating. More please!

On players big moves and then deteriorating, you do see this in the business world too. It must be something in the human psyche. I’ve seen so many people strive for success and achievement and when they get that promotion they think they’ve “made it” and performance drops off. Poch just doesn’t allow that to happen. Take Sissoko as an example. He hasn’t looked that bad to me, but the fact that he’s not playing to HIS full potential is not enough.

On Luke Shaw, I heard a few rumours that his lifestyle at Saints wasn’t great and he has a soft spot for fast food. When he was playing every week it wasn’t a problem but when he isn’t he piles on the pounds. Long term injury didn’t help obv. Not sure if there’s any truth in that but it makes sense.

Dyche has a point about the wholly different approach from the media towards British coaches. Allardyce suffered the same. Apparently he played a long ball game at Bolton, missing out the midfield. Strange that Jay Jay Okocha was player of the year (twice? ), as a midlfielder. Then gets West Ham United promoted at the first attempt and they couldn’t wait to replace him! I’d have either one of them at Saints in a heartbeat.

WanderingSaint

{Ed001's Note - thank you WS. On Allardyce, I think more of the problem is perception. Initially he gets in and does go more route one than usual while he sorts things out at the back. He did evolve at Bolton over time, but his rep had been established.}
