Douglas ex FC Twente CB on his way to Saints on a free. Typical Cortese business quietly closing the deal behind the scenes and allowing unfounded rumours linking the player to Newcastle and others to deflect attention away from his negotiations. We have been after this guy for a while, keep your fingers crossed he will be a great addition in a position that we seriously need to strengthen.

Believable19 Unbelievable5

I really doubt you have any source on this but GOD I hope you are right.

Agree10 Disagree1

I signed him for saints on champ man!

Agree6 Disagree2

I was thinking how come no one has snapped him up yet. Hope its true

Agree8 Disagree1

Would be a good signing

st stuie

Agree3 Disagree0

I don't believe this, Douglas seems to be touted every window to a number of prem teams. He's been linked with Liverpool, west ham and others. Would be good if it happens I'm pretty sure it won't!

Agree6 Disagree1

Its inevitable that he is going somewhere this transfer window, as his contract runs out at the end of the month.
It is true that there were comments about him joining us in Jan, but it would have made sense if we were interested to wait until we can pick him up for free.
Seeing as there is so little talk of where Douglas is going, it does have the ring of truth that he may be coming to Saints

Agree3 Disagree2

Not going to Southampton

Agree2 Disagree4

No chance if we wanted him now we would have sift ex him on the cheap in jan when we needed cover instead of signing forren who I've herd is terrible. That said he would be a good addition to the squad because I'm sorry to say it jos hoovielt and Jose fonte have taken us as far as they can go a d I thank them for that but if Europe is are aim we need to push them players back and let em be cover not 1st team players

Agree2 Disagree3

Any more to this than Saints being linked to every half decent CB that may be available?
Until we see the end of the window I suspect we will see a continuation of such rumours and one of them will no doubt prove to be true.
I know that is stating the bl**dingly obvious, but picking out the real one from all the others will IMHO be impossible.

Saint Martin

Agree3 Disagree0

I wish we had 11 gulys one for every position I think he is has awesome skill on the ball and is really good at taking throw ins

Agree2 Disagree2

"He's been linked with Liverpool, west ham and others"

There is little chance of him coming to Saints?

Agree1 Disagree6

Douglas is going to Kuban Krasnodar in the Russian league. Deal has already been agreed and announced.

Agree1 Disagree1

Can't see any announcement of any kind on the internet

apparently we're in for Dennis Praet and Matias Suarez both from RSC Anderlecht

Believable3 Unbelievable13

That was posted by a fake agent on twitter, load of rubbish

Agree6 Disagree2

Both good players would love praet could maybe get better than matias bt be good still

Agree0 Disagree3

I'd love that but probably just some twitter nonsense

Agree1 Disagree2

Even so these would be quality signings

Agree0 Disagree3

Does anyone know if gareth bale does go else where for all those reported millions do saints get a sell on fee?

Agree0 Disagree3

I know when we were in trouble that arsenal paid us a premium to stop that happening with theo as we needed the money but I'm not sure if we sold that part of the deal to spurs re bale as well, there was a sell on clause in the original deal, if that remains or not I don't know, would be nice though! Would have proffered a buy back clause for 5million!

Agree0 Disagree1

^^A buy back clause of less than we sold him for? Surely the clause would've had to have been at least 15 million.

Agree1 Disagree1

If Bale does get sold we won't get anything, because Rupert Lowe turned down the offer of a sell on fee, we took Tommy Forecast insted

Agree4 Disagree1

With bale we don't have a sell on clause due to the money issues we were in at the start of adminastration so we took money up front instead of any clauses.

Agree2 Disagree0

The buy back clause comment was tongue in cheek.

Agree0 Disagree0

The guy who said we got forecast intstead of a sell on is spot on wich means rupert lowe is even more of a cnut than you thought

Agree6 Disagree0

What a truly great chairman and financial dealer RL was for us. Still some people complain about Cortese!

Agree5 Disagree0

The above comment about rupert lowe being a cnut made me spit out my cereal with laughter hahahha

Agree4 Disagree0

As much as I blame Lowe for us getting relegated, I also blame the local council.
Southampton tried for years to build a new stadium and had numerous planning applications rejected. Had we managed to get a stadium a few years earlier we would have been in a far better financial situation, and probably avoided relegation altogether. Unfortunately the cashing in of Bale, Walcott etc was purely down to severe cash flow problems, which in the end kept the club running.

As much as it hurts me to say this, without cashing in, we may well not have any club at all. As it stands we now have owners and a Chairman in Nicola Cortese who has a real desire and ambition to take us forward, and are in a far better position than we ever were.
It may well be that in a bizarre turn of circumstances, Rupert Lowe has actually done us all a favor by failing so well. He certainly did us a favor by investing so well in our Academy, without which we wouldn't have developed walcott, bale, lallana etc so we do have a few things to thank Wupert for.

Agree4 Disagree3

Lowe was a decent man trying to keep the club going in difficult circumstances. All this bitterness is misplaced.

Fans are only happy when their club spends endlessly in the transfer market. Then they wonder why their club is in financial trouble. Portsmouth anyone??

Agree3 Disagree3

Sorry St Christopher you may well be related to Woopert

But this is posisbley the most misguided sentence I have seen on here and there are a few

"As much as I blame Lowe for us getting relegated, I also blame the local council. "

Eastleigh Council vetoed the proposed stadium at Monksbrook yes, but when both Southampton constancies councils where run by Labour they had to basically sell the idea of St Marys to Lowe.

People that defend Lowe always say that he delivered a Stadium, but the truth is he delivered nothing but debt. Saints fans thought that the club was being run frugally but in truth the Morgage agreement alone was was a "fail" of epic proportion. The Stadium cost £25m to build we got £5m for naming rights sold all our best players and replaced them with budget ones, existed in the premier league at a time of un-precidented wealth and when the club went into admin we still owed £25m for it.

Agree2 Disagree0

All I was trying to imply was that had the council allowed the club to relocate a few years earlier we would more than likely have remained in the Premier league. As soon as legislation changed to make stadiums all-seater, and the Dell was reduced to little over 15,000 seats we were facing financial ruin. How we remained in the top league for so long on such a limited budget was a minor miracle! Our survival was dependent upon our increasing our gate receipts. We all hate Lowe for running the club into the ground, especially when we were relegated - selling off the best players, but by that time our fate was sealed.

Agree2 Disagree0

^ "How we remained in the top league for so long on such a limited budget was a minor miracle!" Think you've forgotten about Matt maybe?

Agree1 Disagree0

The buy back clause was not a ruse or a p*** take i'm a big saints fan. just asking that's all! I think saints will do very well this year 3 or 4 signings and we will be up there ish. let's just remember where we were 5 years ago! like the way we are playing but let's tighten up on defence and try not to push too far up because one day we will get caught big time!

Agree0 Disagree0

I certainly haven't forgotten about Matt. He's another reason why I feel that had we got permission for a stadium earlier, even though we'd have struggled initially, we'd have stayed in the league.

Anyway, as I said in my original post, if we hadn't failed, Marcus would have never bought the club, and we wouldn't be where we are now, looking forward to our exciting future

Fredrik Sorensen of Bologna is on Saints radar Cortese apparently was close to a deal in january but decided to wait until the summer instead hoping for better value from the deal.

Believable3 Unbelievable4

Would be a good signing, hope not to spend too much more than £5million on him though.

Agree3 Disagree1

I read somewhere he was quoted as saying he would prefer to stay at bologna hope he can be persuaded otherwise looks a quality young player

Agree0 Disagree2

Sorensen is contracted for another 3 years with Bologna.
I'd be surprised if we signed him as it will probably cost us around 5m and it is doubtful that he would get a starting place in the side. Assuming we do sign Astori and one of Forren or Yoshida.
He can cover for RB but we are more likely to sign a RB who can play CB than the other way round I am thinking?
As it is, we have Yoshida and Cork who can cover for RB

Southampton fc close on agreeing a deal with Joan Verdu

Believable5 Unbelievable9

Verdu tell press were he be playing next season tomorrow. heres hoping it with the saints

Agree1 Disagree2

Why would we want him? Not really an improvement on Cork or Spiderman.

Agree4 Disagree3

Pochettino might want him as he managed him at Epanyol where he was one of his best and most influential players. Plus he is also on a free!

Agree2 Disagree1

I really cannot see Saints letting a player call a press conference to announce where he is going. Not saying it won't or couldn't happen but would be stunned if NC would allow that to happen. Every single player signed is a marketing opportunity & given the Financial Fair Play rules coming in then we would want to boost our overseas revenue & identity wherever the chance presents itself. btw. i'm not saying we won't sign him, just suggesting a rogue press call is unlikely.

Agree4 Disagree2

^^maybe not an improvement but great to have the option surely?

Agree0 Disagree3

As he's an attacking player not a defensive player

TopSaint

Agree3 Disagree1

Why would we not want another cork or spiderman?

Agree1 Disagree2

He's not another Cork or Spiderman. Plus we have James Ward-Prowse who's got his agenda and I honestly believe is up to the challenge of the Premiership with Steven Davis as an option as well.

Agree4 Disagree0

Hes a cam not cdm great playmaker would. be a great option to have

Saints doing a double raid on Man City with Scott Sinclair coming in plus Micah Richards as CB and Cover for RB. Deals finalised in next two weeks.

Believable9 Unbelievable12

I've got to say, this rumour sounds plausible.

Has Micah Richards been getting game time at City recently? (If we were to get him, then it would kill two birds with just the one stone!)

Agree8 Disagree5

Would love this to be true but can't see it. Think they would both have to take a small wage cut to join us but then again so does any player leaving Man City. Sinclair more likely than Richards

Agree8 Disagree0

Only problem with signing anyone that's been tainted by City is their wages - stupid money! still if we did I'm sure we'd face competition from Harry - he loves a player that comes with a big packet!

Agree3 Disagree1

Would love to see Richards come in, Scott Sinclairs got a pretty bad arm/shoulder injury at the moment though which may slow that deal down if it was to happen

Agree6 Disagree0

Richards would be a brilliant signing

Agree6 Disagree0

Micah had been injured, would love to see him here, but he wad captaining city befote he got onjured

Agree3 Disagree0

Agreed with the sounding plausible bit. Just thinking out loud - would wage demands be too high for us? But I'm assuming that anyone not getting game time or is out of favour at Man City is likely to be prepared for a wage drop in order to continue playing in the top tier & realise that a drop is likely? This situation would be same for any outgoing player in the top4 to any of the other clubs I presume so not just a saints issue

Agree3 Disagree0

I'd love to see Micah Richards, but unsure, his wages will be huge at city. But I guess if he wants to play regular football, it could be possible.

Agree7 Disagree1

Richards is a beast would be class signing

Agree4 Disagree0

Richards signed a new contract at city two weeks ago

Agree1 Disagree3

Can't see it. Surely most top clubs would take Richards. He can get Champions League football and stupid wages

Agree1 Disagree0

Richards was first choice right back before his injury (was it a 6 month lay off) giving Zabaletta a chance to shine. I can't see him wanting to leave City especially as he has been with them so long

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think this is a great rumor. clyne and richards at right back?
surely they both want starts every week

Agree3 Disagree0

Didn't richards say weeks back he's not going to leave city and battle for his place in the first team?

Agree3 Disagree1

Im pretty sure richards just signed a contract extension sure ed would confirm this.

clarkey saint

Agree5 Disagree0

Richards favours the centre back role. I think, as mentioned above, that this would be a great signing! Would fit in brilliantly! Wages would be a worry, but you have to pay big wages if you want to push for a European place. Totally worth the wages in my opinion.

Agree1 Disagree0

People have very short memories!

What was the situation with Bridge at Man. City? His wages were so high that there was no incentive for him to move away, even when he wasn't going to play.

Not too certain either we would bring in an Argentinian manager, with experience of managing in Spain and a very individual style of play and then go and sign players who were rejected by another EPL club, and both with serious injury history!

Saint Martin

Agree1 Disagree0

Richards is never going to happen, OP is a bit deluded I'm afraid

Agree2 Disagree0

Richards has been injured all season! He is a fantastic player and when fit, should start over Johnson for England. Sinclair is no major improvement on the squad, don't rate Sinclair.

Agree1 Disagree0

Would love to see this happen more likely to just be Sinclair as I can't see poch bringing in some1 who would be a let's face it quality replacement for clyne who I think has had a good season

Agree0 Disagree2

Id love richards to join. he'd have to accept a paycut but at least ed play regular and maybe become the first saint for ages to play for england as he's already played before. Then again england manegers just don't like picking saints do they

Agree1 Disagree0

Would love this to be true as I think micah richards is a very good player and hopefully Sinclair could come good.

Agree0 Disagree0

Both would be class, I would love this bon't not sure if it would happen?

Agree0 Disagree0

Talk of Richards coming to Saints is pure fantasy.

Agree5 Disagree0

Fantasy Yes. but I remember being quite impressed that we signed Rahdi Jahidi not so long back!

Alot of rumours floating about but Honda & McGeady? would like to see 1 of these and NC

Believable4 Unbelievable6

I would love to see Honda in a saints shirt but mcgeady i'm not so sure about

Agree11 Disagree2

Honda over Mcgready, he will have lower wage demands

Agree9 Disagree1

Mc Greedy! left Celtic for money. not our kind of player

Agree4 Disagree0

Honda gets linked with every1 in every transfer window so don't be surprised if he stays where he is

Agree1 Disagree1

I watched Honda play against Australia last week. he killed us. creative, can run at defenders (which NONE of our players can. I thought gaston would be good for that but he just runs to the side and then gives it away with a crap pass).

i hope we get a bunch of 5-10mil players. seems some other teams are picking up some good'uns. they don't all have to be 15m+ for some unknown kid

Agree0 Disagree0

Pretty sure Honda's contract at CSKA has run out and will therefore will be a free agent. He will be on the move somewhere! Fingers crossed its to saints as his versatility could be very handy! {Ed001's Note - runs out at the end of December, the end of the season there.}
