Im probably going to get ripped here but I'm sorry guys, Osvaldo does not fit in the teams style of play. People will say give him time but I just don't see it working. I actually think he was terrible today. Lazy and when he does get the ball he tries to take it on his own, when he shoots it's never anywhere near the goal! Lambert should of started! We should sell osvaldo in January.

Believable25 Unbelievable18

Mmm, I have to agree, Osvaldo wasn't good enough today, and I'd start Rickie ahead of him, great in the air, great all round awareness of the game, great technique and a team player. My concern was why Boruc was replaced by our 3rd goalkeeper, who clearly didn't cut it when Adkins gave him a chance.

Agree18 Disagree6

I have a bit of sympathy for Osvaldo in that game. He didn't get any service at all and when he did he was 30 yards from goal with no one to pass to. He was at worst absent. People seem to be giving him a worse judgement then he is objectively meriting, probably because more was expected of him in too little time.

Agree13 Disagree10

One goal is not a good enough return for any premiership striker at any club! Any other team would drop him!

Agree12 Disagree3

Omg! Yes there are a handful of strikers who have come to the premiership & made an immiediate impact but you only have to think of the time it took bale to come good at spurs, henry aT arsenal, drogba at chelsea & ronaldo at man u. So what we are suggesting is that after 13 games in which he has only completed a handful of them he is not good enough for us & ready to ship out. God help any future signings if that is the case! That said, i'm pretty sure mr cortese wil be glancing a very concerned eye over our pretty poor finishing in the final third which to be fair has been there since the first game. i'm pretty certain osvaldo will come good but we need to sort out this lack of cutting edge in the final third. Perhaps we need to dip into the transfer market in january for that crucual midfield link up that can put our strikers into great scoring positions because as it stands I don't think the strikers are getting effective service. That I assume should hVe been down to ramirez but that's another story!

Agree24 Disagree7

^"concerned why boruc was replaced by our 3rd choice keeper"! You sohoud know the team you support a little better. Kelvin davis is out injured & boruc went off with a susepcted broken finger. That leaves paulo on the bench as our only choice. To be fair to him, he isn't too bad a keeper but does need the all importnant game time which today would have given him despite the loss.

Agree9 Disagree2

Boruc has a broken hand, he'll be out for 6 weeks. : (

Agree7 Disagree2

Fans expect players to hit the ground running these days, and are all upset if they don't. Well wake up coz life just isn't like that, ask AVB where his £100m went.

We can't go out and buy guaranteed players Suarez Aguero Bale etc. We should lower our sights from Europe this year, consolidate, bring through a few more graduates in January, find a few different systems of playing football, learn how to give Osvaldo the service he requires to thrive etc etc.

We just need to continue on the path we are already on, if we show the same improvement over the next three years as we have over the last thee years then we will be unplayable.

We are building Rome here people -not Pompy.

But
Dear Santa can we please have Lukaku and Coutinho?

Agree17 Disagree3

I haven't seen Osvaldo do anything that makes me think he is a good footballer

Agree4 Disagree10

Did you see the goal he scored for Italy last month?

Agree8 Disagree3

So basically what you are saying is that MoPo (who had Osvaldo at Espanyol) and the Italian national team don't know a good footballer when they see one? hmmm.

Agree8 Disagree3

Of course Lambert should have started, because his injury that kept him out of a recent game has completely cleared up, and we all know that because the club has let us all know about it, haven't they!?LOL.
Sometimes on this site, it is like debating sex with a 5 year old-they insist they know everything but it is evident from their first comment they don't have a clue, and are relying on the Internet for their vast knowledge.

Saint Martin

Agree4 Disagree1

I do understand where some of these comments are coming from as a fan but seriously, osvaldo has played against arsenal, manutd & chelsea, all away from home & as a lone striker. Those are going to be tough games for any striker to score in let alone our super ossie. That fact is that without the crucual final third link up, i. e the missing piece that is a player who creates the killer pass etc then even messi would struggle to do something in our team currently. Think about our goals so far. All have either come from set pieces, a penalty, a couple of jrod flukes & from lallana. So I would suggest that none of our strikers are cutting it right now including rickie. Take lallana out of the equation & we've scored just twice from open play. that's twice in 13 games & everyone has knives out for osvaldo?! Something clearly isn't clicking in tha final third but for sure it isn't for lack of striker quality.

Agree19 Disagree0

Osvaldo appears to be trying too hard to change the game every time he gets the ball. He needs to relax and calm it down and play with the careful approach play that Ricky does.

Jannersaint

Agree4 Disagree1

He clearly has the talent, just hasn't fitted into our system yet, which baring in mind he hasn't played massive amounts, is not suprising. I think he will continue to improve throughout the season. The trouble is, with J-Rod, Lallana and JWP, playing so well and our system basically being controlled by Rickie, I can't see much game time coming up for him!

Agree2 Disagree0

I must admit to being a little frustrated by all the negative comments regarding recent signings. Originally people were slating Boruc. He has a decent run in the team, gets his fitness back, and does well for us. Now we have the same with Osvaldo.

The Saints signings this year were all about making Saints far more competitive. We strengthened the spine of the team, sorted out the defense, and brought in competition for Rickie.

Saints are all about continuous, sustainable growth.

That means we aren't going to suddenly set the world alight, and beat all the top teams in their own back yard. Yes it was disappointing loosing away to Arsenal and Chelsea, but the general nature of the games show that we've improved tremendously.

Last year, if Rickie was out injured we had no options to cover him. We bring in Dani, a player well known by Pochettino, who has a comparable goal scoring record to Rickie (although he has scored his goals at the top level for the whole of his career). Dani's record suggests that he will come good, but Rickie hasn't exactly set the world alight this year either.

I'm not complaining about Saints. However I am trying to highlight that we aren't exactly giving our strikers much service, and as mentioned by an above poster we've barely scored from open play. To a degree, that has gone unnoticed by our league position, and I'm sure that Poch is working on that aspect of our play.

Nobody can argue that Osvaldo is playing well, since strikers get judged on putting the ball in the back of the net. However, if he gets a little more service we'll see a few more goals.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - what I noticed with him at the weekend is that he seems to be very lacking in confidence. He showed some lovely touches on the ball, but he was always looking for one more touch, which is usually a sign of lack of confidence. I have not been able to watch him a lot in the past, so I am not sure if that is just the way he has played in Italy, because players do get more time and space on the ball there and he has just not adjusted or if he is struggling to find his feet in England. If he could sort that out, and just take a touch less and move the ball on, he would have looked good at the weekend. As it was, that extra touch was allowing Chelsea to close him down and usually win the ball back.}

Form is by no means permanent, even bad form. Gaston is young so i'd say give him time, Osvaldo however is not and just seems out of his depth in our team, I thought it was a bad signing from the beginning, However the only way they will get better is game time so we either stick with em or sell em but Gaston is young and Osvaldo has not played enough to make a decision on weather to sell him in my opinion so Poch needs to pick carefully what games to play them in because if they find their form we could have two top players.

Agree0 Disagree6

Neither Osvaldo or Lambert seem to fit into our forward play at the moment both seem to be caught in between our system and what they need to perform at their best. Lambert needs wide men supplying crosses or cut backs and we don't play that way. Osvaldo seems to need more close passing and interplay around the area and our players are not on that wavelength as of yet. That's why we are not imposing ourselves on the opposition as much as we should, yes we stifle their play but then don't create enough opportunities for the C/F

Agree2 Disagree1

Osvaldo will come good, it´s not like we´re doing badly (apart from the last 2 games) he´s a good squad member, and is better than Soldado at least! Couple of goals and his confidence will grow.

Agree3 Disagree1

We do better without Osvaldo, he's done nothing, that's the fact of the matter

Agree2 Disagree8

He scored last night. and he was brought down in the box, which should have given us a penalty.

Osvaldo will score goals for Saints, and the true fans will chant his name - just like they did last night.

Agree4 Disagree0

I really enjoyed watching Osvaldo last night vs Villa. Ok, one or two chances should have been hit first time rather than the extra touch too many but above all he showed more passion than most others on the pitch which tells me he has bought into the Southampton project. It really wouldn't surprise me if our scouting team already have or are still searching for the one player who is able to provide the link up to get these players scoring. With current injuries I scan maybe see us limping towards january like a wounded animal but with the right influx of 1 or 2 players we could have an awesome new year.

Agree2 Disagree0

Stop being impatient

Agree0 Disagree0

Only 24% of Southampton’s passes were in the attacking third against Man City, a lower proportion than any other side this weekend, and that is with us playing our high pressing game.

I hope you are right!

So we finish this weekend 7th. Damn. Ah well, still got the joint best defence in the league, still playing good football and with an opportunity mid-week to leap frog Everton. So long as we keep doing well in the home games I have no concerns overall. Let's be realistic friends, two away games at Arsenal and Chelsea - it was always likely we'd come out of with nothing. But we were unlucky on both occasions and played to the same standard we have always done, so no concerns about any real form drop. If we can end up still being in the top 7, and it still being so close up there, by new years I will consider this one of the best halves of a season I've witnessed as a saints fan. Peace and love brothers!

Sense at last! TotLly agree & stil enjoying our season so far. Wasnt expecting anything from these games but pleased how we played vs arsenal & thought we held chelsea well for An hour. I hope two losses on the bounce don't knock our confidence though

Agree9 Disagree1

Why should we not expect to get anything from these games? Jesus, where is the ambition? Also osvaldo is not cutting the mustard!

Agree4 Disagree9

There is a difference between hoping to win every game and expecting to win every game.

If you expect to win every game of the season you clearly inhabit some other world.

Where is your cool pragmatism?

Agree6 Disagree1

Lots of people on here seem to be saying buy a player for £10m+ give him five games and if it hasn't quite worked out by then then sell him.

We are not, and I don't think we ever will be that sort of club!

Change your expectations or you will become one frustrated bitter confused "fan".

Go support Chelsky! (But then they have stuck by Torres. )

Agree4 Disagree1

Ref my comment above about me not expecting anything from arsenal or chelsea games. Its quite simple really. Yes as a lifelong fan I was hoping for a win but both arsenal & chelsea have been scoring freely fom open play whereas we have not. Add in the fact that both teams we played away then my expectation was that we would lose but I was hoping either for a draw or a narrow loss. My biggest fear was us losing our confidence going into the villa game. Even more so now we've lost boruc as villa will be well up for pressuring gazza now. Please be clear, this isn't lack of ambition on my part but more of understanding where we are at currently. We are a vey good team but we are still a few seasons short of the cl spots. At start of the season I was hoping for a top 10 position which I beleive we will get but as always, i'm looking forward to us hitting 40 pts as I can then start enjoying the season!

According to reports, we are very close to securing the signing of Aaron hunt. He is an attacking midfielder who plays for werden Bremen in the bundlesliga. Apparently we are in talks with him and we could secure the signing in January but he won't officially be our player until the summer transfer window. What do you guys think about this? Do you think that this would be a good player to secure or not?

Believable7 Unbelievable4

No, thank you.

Agree1 Disagree3

Yes please! Just watched a YouTube vid of this guy and looks creative and a finisher from midfield. At 27 he's in his prime and with an English mother will hae no issues with communication! :-)
