Carlos Vela - Real Sociedad - £7m+

Believable11 Unbelievable6

I just heard saints are in talks with Uruguayan GK Muslera from Galatasaray.

Agree7 Disagree4

De Jong Ajax 8.5 million in once Lambert leaves, hearing west ham throwing Tomkins c/b in as part of deal for Lambert.

Agree4 Disagree16

Marseille defender Lucas Mendez & striker Andre- Pierre Gignac getting linked with us in French Press £16 mill deal for both, saying Gignac will replace Lambert who moving to Spurs for £9 million according to press it not west ham.

Agree0 Disagree10

Vela is rated at around £17m

Agree5 Disagree5

Who rates Vera at £17m? His mum?

Agree11 Disagree2

Who the hell is Vera?

Agree4 Disagree1

Probably Vela's mum

Agree21 Disagree1

Mendez and giganic are not orth 16 million not even 10, rickie won't leave he loves it here only way he will is if we go for someone in a shockinglymassive deal which won't happen

Agree2 Disagree3

Rickie isn't going anywhere, it's hardly a good message to send to our young players, we need to show loyalty to get it, Rickie doesn't want to go anywhere and the club don't want him going anywhere

Agree4 Disagree0

Why on earth would Rickie want to leave, to a side that is fighting against relegation? He is in the England squad largely due to the help he gets at Saints to maintain his fitness. He does not need Big Sams "expertese" in how to fall over to get him on the 'plane to Brazil. (Is it just bad luck that West Ham United have constant injury problems?)
Too many "journalists" have confused January 1st and April 1st.

Saint Martin

Agree7 Disagree0

Arsenal sold him for £4m and have a 'first dibs' clause on him - that's all.

Agree3 Disagree0

Nearly all these rumours except the Vella thing are complete c**p, I've heard of the interest in Vella which I think would be an excellent signing and I cannot believe the amount of fans that want Ricky to leave. Shocking

Agree3 Disagree0

I don't know why the Luuk de Jong comment go so many dislikes, it wasn't me but I agree. Same type of player with Rickie. (Who has not played well recently. I don't care if he has scored tap-ins. ) let's be honest, Rickie has not got many more seasons ahead of him and unfortunately I am having to remain realistic of signing Lukaku.

Southampton weigh up £12.5m bid for Cagliari defender Davide Astori.
Manager Pochettino is reportedly a long-term admirer of the 26-year-old

Believable8 Unbelievable8

MP has stated the club has NO interest in Astori. I suspect we are seeing agent spin again.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree1

It's probably down to lazy journalism, his clubs chairman said he's for sale and we've been linked to him before and they've just re-hashed it, I would like to see him in a saint's shirt though

and MoPo said we had no interest in Osvaldo and we signed him, don't take what he says publicly as truth, if he admitted every player we were after, not only would other clubs go in for them, it would raise the price we pay for them

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually, MoPo said he did have interest in Osvaldo. and Wanyama. and Banega.

Lenny

Agree0 Disagree1

Mopo actually denied the Wanyama one in his press conference where he stated interest in Osvaldo, Banega and Damiao. Then we signed Wanyama shortly afterwards which was probably a quick and unexpected development.

Agree0 Disagree1

No he said he was interested in Damiao, Banega and Wanyama

3-0 drubbing today. Well, apart from the 45 minutes (in total) when we were by far the better side.

Someone mentioned (not on here) how Adkins lost his job after "only" drawing with Chelsea around the same time last year. Taxi for Pochettino?

I heard the same lad (I assume he was a Chelsea fan, as he was wearing lots of bling and a blue hat. ) then say "I'm sure I've just seen AVB wandering around outside! He's getting that Pochettino's job in the morning!"

I turned my head in, and said "Sorry to talk out of turn, love, but I'm sure Schteve McClaren's over there holding an umbrella. Doesn't mean he's trying to sign Torres, Mata, Hazard, Lampard, Cole, and JT on loan for Derby. "

True tale aside, I think Pochettino is safe, as he's done wonders (continuing from where Adkins and Pardew both took us) and is seen as the long-term project etc.
But, still, we all know how harsh and ambitious Cortese is, is there any chance he'll slam the panic button and fire Pochettino (having only picked up one win in nine games) and if so 1) who would he appoint as successor 2) who would you want as the next Saints boss?

Luckily the teams around us didn't gain any ground. We can still battle the Magpies for the top 8.

Lambert to West Ham for £9m? That is big money considering. But NOOOOOO! We need Rickie, he is a top, top striker.

Finally, I thought Ramirez (Gaston Ramirez, rather than Chelsea's Ramires) played VERY well today, especially in the first half. I may have to put that lift to the airport on hold afterall. But I'd have subbed him for Lambert, and kept Cork on the field.
Best players (Saints) today: Chambers, Ramirez, Schneiderlin and of course the ever splendid Adam Lallana (For England!)

All the best.

by Saint Etienne.

Believable5 Unbelievable11

I think everyone should stop worrying when Southampton lose to Chelsea or Arsenal or any other mega wealthy club. Pochettino won't lose his job and everyone in the team is making progress!

Please stay cheery Saints' fans :)

Agree10 Disagree3

I thought Ramirez played well but he was still a clear weak link in the side. He kept losing possession and looked very greedy. Still an improvement in his play though he lacked effort. He was no-where near as good as Adam was today

Agree4 Disagree5

The only reason we are worried is because we deserved at least a draw. It's frustrating how we can't score from dominating possession and creating lots of chances

Agree7 Disagree1

We have had some tough fixtures to be fair to Poch, though I do question his team selection on occasion like when he picks Hoiveld or fox, I can understand the persistence with Ramirez and Osvaldo because there apparently quality players though I've never seen it but fox and Hoiveld need to be released asap. fox and jos aside we look to be on track for finishing where we should which is just inside the top half so this nonsense about sackings is pretty ridiculous. 8th is best we can hope for and any higher is just a dream. lb cover and a top CB is what's need in jan but tbh the aquisition of the two positions probably won't improve our league position that much maybe a place or two max. oxlade on loan is a good shout aswell but dunno if wenger would allow it incase he settled in too well and dint wanna go back.

Agree2 Disagree0

It's crazy to think Poch could be under pressure. But football us crazy. One of the posts below states that Schniederlin was one if our best players v Chelsea! When I ask Morgan lovers why they think he's so good, they struggle to answer! Cork does more in half a match than Morgan does in half a season. Crazy to take Cork off yet again yesterday.

Agree2 Disagree3

Ramirez was an improvement, but still no where near good enough, I also thought Morgan had a disappointing game, as did Jay Rod.

Agree5 Disagree1

With reference to Adkins loosing his job, I have a reasonable theory, which has nothing to do with the Chelsea result.

At the end of the Championship season, according to a couple of the stewards, Saints had an experienced keeper that had agreed to join Saints. Indeed, he was training with Saints for a few weeks, and the deal was lined up to go through, but it didn't happen. Following on from that, we finally brought in Boruc.

So why did he loose his job? Well, what I have heard was that Adkins didn't want Boruc. He felt that we would be fine with Davis and Gazza in goal. Apparently Boruc was brought in under the insistence of Cortese.

Bearing in mind the early performances of Davis and Gazza, it was clear we needed someone.

This lead Cortese to question Adkins judgement, and from there further strange decisions such as substitutions too late to influence the game flamed Cortese's questioning of Adkins judgement.

Who knows if this is true, but it's the best explanation that I've heard, based on information I've received from multiple sources.

Agree6 Disagree0

To the poster above, really? Morgan is a fantastic player, his work rate is above anyone else's, the passes he picks out are phenomenal, he does more for the team than Cork does, yes, Cork is a fantastic player, but it's absurd to suggest he's better than Morgan or Wanyama

Agree0 Disagree3

I prefer cork to wanyama. Contributes a lot more to our game. Him and Morgan together are an amazing pair

Agree2 Disagree2

Cork and Morgan got ripped to pieces by West Brom last year.

This year we beat them in their own back yard.

Yes Cork must be better than Wanyama.

Sheesh, there is no helping some people.

Agree1 Disagree1

I actually agree Wanyama is definitely an important piece of the Saints jigsaw but in regard to the Baggies 0-3 game it was mainly Belgium's own Romelu Lukaku who ripped us a new one. Without him they are a shadow of last season's side.

With regard to transfers it's only been two days and I am already confused beyond belief, some sources say we are not getting any new players in and others say we are scouting for as many as four top class players. I think somewhere between to the two stools would be fine - after all any side can do with improving if it is possible and I think Saints have proved beyond doubt in the last ten games we could do with some 'improvement'.

Also in the local Reading press Billy Sharp is saying he would like the chance to see if he can get in the squad or leave as he is now back from Reading. I think that Saints should now ship him out or say, 'this is what you have to do to get into our first 17 give it a go!'

Every one of this poxy transfer windows gives me a headache. I hate them!

Agree0 Disagree0

It's not only down to Lukaku, our midfield were overrun by them last year, Wanyama bossed it this year which allowed Morgan the space he needed

Agree1 Disagree2

With regards to the email concerning the future of MP I have to say make better use of your time.

Finishing in the top ten will be an fantastic achievement for saints this season given that half our first team were playing in div 1 or the championship in the last three year

We play using 3 or four academy teenagers, have had our style of play praised in the media and by big team managers. Please support what is going with on with us and serious comment about our position in the big league.

Agree5 Disagree0

Morgan is a fantastic player? As I have said before, fantastic players dominate football matches. Name me a match Morgan has dominated this or last season! If passing a ball sideways and commiting silly fouls makes a player fantastic, I must have been world class!

A lot of football fans in this country are a lot like the F. A. Clueless

Agree2 Disagree2

Just remembered the words of football genius Tony Pulis a few months ago. He rates Morgan as the best all round midfielder in the prem league! Apparently he was heard saying off the record that if he could ping a throw-in from the halfway line into the penalty area, he would be almost as good as Rory Delap!

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think anyone said he 'should' lose his job I think the speculation was would he. Everything stated above is perfectly true and reasonable but perhaps [and it's only perhaps] if Saints mention to lose a couple of games to these sides that the majority seem to think we'll beat with ease, Cortese may look at this as a step in the wrong direction and look to upgrade the coaching and management. By his own ambition he is 'driven' and 'ultra ambitious' he has no sentiment, if he feels Saints are progressing watch out.

I don't think he will and I think for the time being Mauricio is a very good fit for Saints but if you can tell me what Cortese is thinking you're a better man than me.

Our January transfer window activity might be an indicator to what is being thought by the manager and chairman - if they buy they are not happy, if nothing happens they feel the squad is good enough and strong enough.

My own opinion is the first 13 or so are great and a match for most teams but after that the dip in quality is too significant to give us any chance of seriously competing.

Agree1 Disagree0

Regarding Cortese and his past with reference to replacing managers, it would be next to impossible to guess what he's thinking, because we don't have the facts that he does.

Nicola keeps a very close eye on the performance of the club, as well as talking individually with the first team players.

Cortese stated that there were several signs that Adkins wasn't the man to take Saints to the next level. Basically, Cortese had started to question Adkins judgement. With regards to Pardew, he asked for additional funds and guaranteed a playoff place.

I posted a theory put together from various sources recently, regarding Adkins, and if true I can see why Cortese acted.

Agree1 Disagree0

Last year at home Cork went off at half time v West Brom at 1-0. West Brom by passed midfield and went long into the channels apart from that excellent incisive posts.

According to reports, we are preparing a £12.5 million bid for Davide Astori. We have been given the green light to sign him and we are going to try and sign him up by submitting a £12.5 million bid. What do you guys think about this? Would you like to see him in a saints shirt or not?

Believable8 Unbelievable3

I feel this good be a good signing but I would feel so sorry for fonts who has gotten so much better this season and is a first class player

Agree5 Disagree0

£12. 5 is too much, especially considering what the caligari president said recently regarding being forced to sell his stars on the cheap, if we can get him for less than 7/8 then go for it, if not we should wait till summer and sign kouyate on a free.

still need a keeper tho.

Didn't watch the game today, but having seen the results for clubs around us it's not all doom and gloom! I think all in all the boys have performed very professionally the last month, even with injuries other players have stepped in and done their bit, and we've certainly been unlucky with some results. If you look at our form against the clubs below us we are 6-4-1, so let's hope the team can improve on that in the 2nd half of the season. Would be great to see a signing or two to add to the defensive line and the front line but once the squads at full strength again there's no doubt we'll be back to our best. Still very exciting times to be a Saints Fan!

Believable7 Unbelievable0

Don't get too excited about the FA Cup though - on the Saints site MoPo has already said he going to take the opportunity to 'rotate' the squad.

Which means that the fringe players that appear to be not good enough will be playing against a competitive and very tough Burnley team.

Expect us to be one of the 'shock' results.

Therein lies the rub - our back-up players can just about compete in the Championship [that's the better ones] and this makes Southampton FC weak and a push-over if there are injuries and suspensions - W-1, D-2, L-6 - seems to confirm this.

Another bad run of luck and we'll be looking like previous seasons Hull City and Blackpool - everyone keeps saying we'll be fine, I'm not so sure.

Agree2 Disagree9

Thing is, throughout this run of bad results, we haven't played all that badly, most of the goals we've leaked have been down to inexperience of the players who've come into the team, don't forget those players are no where near as fit as the one's who play most if not every week and they have no time to gel with each other, what is practically second nature to Lovren and Fonte will be completely alien to Hooiveld and Yoshida.

Realistically we were never expecting to get anything from Chelsea, Arsenal, City and Tottenham, we got a decent draw against City, which showed how good our 2nd string can be, the only disappointing result was the Villa one. It only looks so bad because the results have come in one go, if they were spread out more I don't think anyone would be worried

Agree4 Disagree0

Personally I love the FA Cup (all the cups for that matter) and would be pretty disappointed if we fielded an alternative team and lost in the 3rd Round (or any round for that matter)

If Southampton fielded a strong/strongest team and lost, then fair play to Burnley for getting a great result.

Interesting to see how, if he plays, Danny Ings gets on against us in that match. Burnley's man in form, strongly rumoured to be on Saints' shopping list - interesting and an opportunity to gauge him better.

As for today's game against Chelsea - Torres was bloody lucky the ball came off the post and hit him. Had he tried to hit it, I'm sure it would have gone wide.

Well done to the referee for not giving Oscar the penalty, for that silly dive. Good job Super Kelvin was our 'keeper today, had it been the young, tall, dark and handsome Gazzaniga we'd have had it given against us!

Up the Saints.

With all the injuries i'd like to see us field a 2nd string if only to give the players a break for a week

Am I the only one that would snatch at the chance to sell lambert for £8million? He's no way near the form we are used to this season and £8m would cash that in straight away

Believable12 Unbelievable13

Nah, he's too valuable to the young players to get rid of, like Kelv. I wouldn't get rid in January anyway, it'd leave us with 2 strikers, one of which is injured at the minute and it looks like he's hit a patch of form over the last couple of games too

Agree4 Disagree3

I think that's a bit harsh, still think he's a top player, but at same time would def sell him for 8 mill. Spend it on Ings, it would be like swapping a 31 yr old for a 21 yr old, Ings looks good, makes sense

Agree6 Disagree5

What is wrong with Saints fans Lambert is a key player in our squad and has now an England international, why would we sell one of our best players? The link up play from him, Lallana and J-Rod has been outstanding this season and has got us 19 goals this season (between them) he's still a top player and we would never sell him, stupid talk

Agree12 Disagree3

Take 8mil all day long. He is beginning to struggle with the pace of games. Take the money and buy a long term replacement

Agree6 Disagree7

No one would be stupid enough to pay 8 m, not worth it

Agree2 Disagree4

When kelv retires, he will become assistant keeper coach

Agree2 Disagree0

^ did fartton park get flooded again today?

West ham supposed to be after lambert for 8m that is a lot of millions for a player of his age. Hope he doesn't go!
