I think as a saints fan, I think that I would prefer Hooper over Jay Rodriguez, what do other saints fans think?

Believable26 Unbelievable11

Hooper has looked good at Celtic but anyone could score up there! However, Adkins knows him well and his judgement should be better based than any of us.
Rodriguez has a lot of pundits singing his praises and on the whole, I would say the Championship is a higher average level than the SPL-HOWEVER he looked pretty ordinary against Saints defence so could he cope in the Premiership?

You pays your money and takes your choice-but in either case what money, because both are a risk as to whether they can make that step up. Some people are talking about £10m as being the value for either, but at that price I think Cortese and Adkins would feel there are more secure options elsewhere.

Agree11 Disagree3

I wouldnt take jay rodriguez, ild take kalou whos available on a free transfer.. yes he struggled to get into the team that just won the european cup..but hwen he did play, he made an impact, hes so much pace and still young enough to develop.. can also play as a winger when needed and a current international

Agree21 Disagree4

Both young with a lot of pottential. Would be happy to see either at St Mary's

Agree10 Disagree2

Off load Forte & Guly use Lee in the wider role and buy both Jay Rod and Hooper - we may need 4 good stickers

Agree11 Disagree3

I like guly. he is a great player when he gets the ball.. i think this year we will see his full potential

Agree12 Disagree13

Really have to disagree, no football brain, no commitment on pitch, poor finisher, ok in league1, average in championship, too pot for premiership

Agree10 Disagree6

Poor finisher? Got into double figures this season. All before January (All before fans like you needlessly started to abuse him!)

Agree8 Disagree7

Sorry, but Guly was awful in the latter stages of last season. It wasnt just that his form was poor, it was the lack of energy from him. Getting the ball, being closed down to defenders and passing to a player a couple of feet away is all well and good, but at that point he HAS to move. Dont just stand there, MOVE! If you dont your not an option for a pass and are just dropping you team mate in it. Having said that, I didnt hear any booing all season. Grumbles but no booing. As for the amount of goals he scored, I see that as a testament to the standard of delivery from midfield more than anything else. He has done very well for us in the lower leagues, and for that we must thank him, but I think a new right midfield is a must. As for the Hooper/Jay rod thing. From what I've seen of hooper he seems very similar to what we already have in Lambert and Sharp. For that reason I'd much prefer Jay rod. I think he'd provide more variation. More of an edge of the box striker than a poacher, we already have 2 of them that are as good as they come. Looking forward to next season! COYR's!

Agree10 Disagree8

Guly is a liability. He makes poor decisions in final 3rd, doesn't track back well and his marking in defensive situations is awful... he cost us victory a few times this season most notably at Fratton Park. He can score the odd good goal, but at this level I expect no less but to have reliability in other ways too. He is not up to scratch to do well in the Prem.

I'd rather Hooper than Rod. But agree, for £10m or there abouts, I'd expect a proven top level striker e.g. Defoe. Scoring against poor Championship sides and SPL sides doesn't mean you'll score in the Prem. If I had to pick, I'd go Hooper over Rod.

Agree8 Disagree7

Yeah guly didn't play his best towards the end but cut him some slake he scored 11 more than de ridder puncheon chaplow Barnard Connelly, so why doesnt he deserve a chance in the prem.

Agree8 Disagree4

I agree that the money we would have to spend to land Jay Rod or Hoop is way to much. As someone said above you could get defoe for that, now that would be a good worth the money signing.

Agree3 Disagree5

Right I'm a saints fan and Defoe would never come to us,as much as I would love it but there are bigger prem clubs after him

Agree11 Disagree1

No way

Agree1 Disagree2

Nigel Adkins also knew Forte very well, and we all know how that went....his judment isn't always spot.

Agree4 Disagree2

Forte was brought in as a squad player just to thicken the squad a bit. Anyway, his two goals vs MK Dons certainly helped is anyway so don't moan!

Agree5 Disagree0

I'd rather have Charlie Mulgrew from Celtic.

I have heard a very faint rumur regarding a goalkeeper for saints. This isn't in the major tabloids or the twitter blagathon that takes place, which in truth gives me greater confidence in it. It is via a friend who is involved with Boro and apparently we have shown an interest in Jason Steele. Although not so far as to physically make a bid/enquire directly.
I can see this as being true, its not been mentioned in the local media and the lad is a very good young keeper, boro are starting to struggle with cash after so many years from the premier and missing their promotion targets repeatedley and he would be excellent back up for Kelvin and able to challenge him. He has great control of the Area and impressed me against sunderland, he is english, and he could easly be our number one in a year or 2? What do people think, and has anyone heard anything else about this one?

Believable14 Unbelievable8

Not heard aything about this before, but I would say Steele would be a fantastic signing. He's a good, young shot stopper and could easily play for England one day

Agree11 Disagree3

Certainly a posiibility-I have heard same rumours about their finances.

Would fit in well, quality keeper as a number 2, to be developed into the squad-how Saints like to do things.

The daily echo today has said that southampton have made a £6mill + bid for jay rodriguez of burnley. but nothing about kenwyn jones

Believable8 Unbelievable6

The echo is as reliable as this website!

Agree13 Disagree2

Burbles media manager has said that NO BID has been made for Rodriguez at this stage

Agree7 Disagree5

No 'firm' bid, doesnt mean talks and enquiries havent happened

Agree5 Disagree2

Yes but saints like to keep it quite and have probably told burnley to keep it secret too. that is of course- if this is true

Agree4 Disagree2

Echo has become a joke! As I have just put on another post, see how they have been trying to stir it up about season ticket prices.
Must be edited by a mole from The News!

No offers for Rodriguez according to Burnley.

Agree3 Disagree7

I mean Burnley btw^ sorry

There has been alot of rumours from the sun and daily echo and other newspapers and sites saying that..
Matt Jarvis and Kenweyne Jones are on there way to Southampton.
Also Gary Hooper may not renew his contract at Celtic with a chance to play in the Premier League ( I dont think his worth it)
Not all true of course "paper talk" Dont bite my head off what have you heard?

Believable3 Unbelievable6

I would prefer hooper to Rodriguez any day. Apparently we have bid in excess of 6m for jay rod!!! Bit steep in my opinion (daily echo) Would love to see Jarvis at saints but he's not worth the 10m that wolves want for him

Agree3 Disagree4

Matt javis is not worth the 10m that wolves want. But would love to see him at saints. Hooper would also be a great signing, and would prefer him to jones and jay Rodriguez who we have bid in excess of 6m for him! (daily echo) personally I don't think he's worth it

Agree7 Disagree2

I'm not sure Saints fans inc myself would want Kenwyne jones back, I thought he did well for Saints when previously playing in the championship, however he has not really taken his opportunities at Sunderland or stoke so I question whether he is good enough for the premiership. Matt jarvis, yes please. Just what we need.

Agree6 Disagree1

6 mill for jay rodrigiouz of burnley

Agree5 Disagree4

Jarvis I think is a possibility
Jones I wouldn't think at all likely. His attitude when he left us last time was awful....not sure he'd be welcomed back. I for one wouldn't welcome him at all.
Hooper I also don't think is likely....we signed Sharp because we couldn't get Hooper.
