SAINTS could snap up midfield target Steven Davis on a free transfer, if the Rangers star walks out of Ibrox this week.
The 27-year-old is one of a number of players said to be considering quitting the troubled Glasgow giants.
Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker have already lodged objections to their contracts being transferred to the ‘newco’ Rangers, after the former company was consigned to liquidation.
Naismith and Whittaker, who have been joined by teammates Sone Aluko and Rhys McCabe, now claim they are free agents.
And Davis, who Saints are keen to bring to St Mary’s this summer, could be about to join the exodus.
The Northern Ireland international has a release clause of about £1.6m in his contract.
That was inserted when he accepted a 75 per cent wage cut following the club’s descent into administration, in order to help prevent job losses at the club.
But the Rangers skipper is now said to be seriously considering following Naismith and Whittaker out of the door.
THIS AFTERNOON HE HAS INDEED LEFT RANGERS

If we sign Naismith, Whittaker & Davis and with De Ridder the whole right hand side would be Steves, how confusing would that be?

Davis would be a fantastic signing.

Report from the daily echo this after noon
BIRMINGHAM City will only sell goalkeeper Jack Butland to Saints if they receive an “eye-popping offer”.
The 19-year-old Blues ace, pictured, who was part of the England squad for Euro 2012, has been attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs.
That includes Saints, who have enquired about the player.
However, Birmingham’s acting chairman, Peter Pannu, has said the Championship outfit would only let Butland leave in return for a major fee.
The player is reportedly valued between £3m and £4m.
Included in a statement addressing a number of issues at the club, Pannu said: “Jack Butland and (winger) Nathan Redmond are not for sale unless we are subject to an eye-popping offer.”
However, the Blues are facing a difficult financial future, with Pannu warning they must be careful to avoid administration.
And he has made it clear that Birmingham would consider offers for their top stars.

Daily Mail reckons Ł6m bid from Saints rejected by Brum

Actually the Mail got their info from a report three hours earlier from clubcall who claimed we are after Fraser Forster having been rebuffed for Butland. Not likely that we would offer 6m for a player yet to make first team debut.

The Ł6m wouldn't have been all up front. I imagine a lot of it was offered as clauses after international appearances, etc..

We are reported to be interested in Buttner, a lot of clubs are in for him including Werder Bremen and Fulham, honestly i think its a difficult one to wrap up but this could show we are now out of the race for Jarvis as his move to stoke is edging closer.

Fulham and QPR target Alexander Buttner says he has been impressed by the facilities at both west London clubs after visiting them this week ahead of a possible transfer away from Vitesse.
The Eredivisie midfielder, 23, was one of nine uncapped players on the provisional squad list of 36 for the Netherlands ahead of Euro 2012 but missed out on the final 23.
The former Ajax youth player has just one year left on his contract with his current club and is likely to move this summer, but remains cagey over his future.
“It was impressive,” Buttner told Voetbal International. “Everything is organised very professional and the people I've met were very nice. I had some good conversations.”
Craven Cottage is reportedly Buttner's favoured destination, but German side Werder Bremen are also believed to be vying to secure his services.
“The Premier League and Bundesliga are both great competitions,” the player admitted.
“I've still got a one-year contract at Vitesse, so clubs first must agree on the transfer wage.”
Buttner’s agent, Alexander Bursac, revealed the priority is to ensure the midfielder’s talent is highly valued wherever he plies his trade this coming season.
Bursac said: “The most important [thing] is that Alexander will play next season. He wants a big competition so you've never got a guarantee on a spot at the first XI. But he needs some credit at his new club.
“It's now up to the clubs. But I expect the deal will be done.”

Just checking on wiki... Alexander Buttner 23 year old Dutch midfielder who plays for Vitesse... Made his senior debut in 2008 and since made 107 apps scoring 10 goals. I have no ideal who he is, how good he is or if Saints are interested in him.
