Just curious whether Southampton are interested in signing ross McCormack from Leeds after the sacking of Brian McDermott. I know we are unlikely to sign someone but he would be an easy target

Believable16 Unbelievable4

Six clubs are interested in him after his outburst on ssn earlier - "outburst" is probably over the top, but a little unprofessional. He clearly wants out.

Fits the mould.

Happy to bring him in, but we don't actually need him.

Late attempt of the saints for the Livorno striker paulinho, refused

Danny Ings spotted at Southampton Airport allegedly. Here just to see family? Burnley are playing QPR tomorrow so it's completely feasible that that's the reason why.

Believable4 Unbelievable8

Not true. Ings is still with the Burnley squad.

Agree11 Disagree2

No I'm not. Danny Ings x

Agree6 Disagree9

"There will be no more Deadline Day news to come from Saints. " quoted on the tv Sports website.

So that's it folks, whether you agree or not, this is what Southampton FC go with for the rest of the season.

Puts me in mind of the 'Dutch Revolution' which was, as we now all know, about saving money and nothing else.

Perhaps I'm too cynical.

Agree5 Disagree4

Yes, you are too cynical. This is about being happy with the squad we have and having some quality youngsters to feed into the team (something we didn't have back then). Especially when the type of player we need (work ethic/personality/skillful/young) is already difficult to find without having to pay over the odds.

Agree9 Disagree3

The vision of the club was to get all levels playing the same type of football and promoting players to the first team. So far that has worked well and although I'd have liked at least a new centre-back I don't for one minute think that Mopo is a fool and am intrigued to see how this pans out. We had 4 18/19 year olds playing against Arsenal and nearly beat them. Other teams are panic buying with money they can ill afford so I am not going to panic just yet.

Agree8 Disagree2

The players you mention are out there you've just got to pay for them?
You get what you pay for In this world!
Don't think there was ever any funds for this window there was only ever going to be loan moves think we were in for holtby but were reluctant to dig deep?£££££££

Agree4 Disagree4

I would have liked us to hijack fulhams bid for mitrelogu very good underated striker and for 10m and cheapish wage could and believe will be a bargain whoever gets him

Agree2 Disagree4

Look - ^

we either have faith in youth or not. We don't need to sign anybody.

Summer is different. Let Fulham splash their cash, they're going down anyway.

3-0 tomorrow.

Mungochutney Saint.

Agree11 Disagree3

People need to remember Saints are already investing in what will potentially be the long term future of football, that being homegrown talent. I for one would much rather see us field a side of players which the club have developed out of the academy than a team constructed through heavy investment and over-inflated weekly wages. It's clear no matter how much some fans might want it to happen, Saints aren't going to follow the likes of Man City and Chelsea and splash hundreds of millions a year on the latest breakthrough players. Instead the club will only make the right investments when they are needed to drive the team towards it's next goal.

Agree4 Disagree1

After the recent success of our youth,
I'm excited by the fact poch believe our youngsters are ready to step up. Really excited by how much Sam g wil be leading the line, maybe he can make the difference

Agree2 Disagree1

Superb call by Mungochutney saint for the scoreline. I think we will continue trying to make the serious strengthening signings in the summer and bringing youth up through the season to bring the squad forward. We are in a great position right now with the best saints squad I can really remember.

So expect something in the summer, one or two relatively big money players will probably come. Leibherr doesn't look desperate to sell the club or withdraw funds so I think she wants to continue Cortese's way of running things (except maybe a little more transparency).

This current squad is easily top half standard. We have pulled clear of the bottom bundle this season and the depth is actually pretty obvious as we've held on to 9th with quite a large injury list. A full strength squad could push us close to Europe. A few top additions will be all we need this summer and then we will be ready to really challenge next season.

Saint Phil

Agree2 Disagree1

I agree with the above, as long as MoPo stays at the helm. Sooner he is tied down to a longer contract, the better!

Southampton will be making no new signings this window. Mopo and the team are already on the way to London in advance of tomorrows game.

Let's hope that Gallagher and Targett can be as good as new signings.

Believable13 Unbelievable3

Just because the team have left for london dosent mean we won't make a signing hopfully we do!

Agree1 Disagree6

To confirm, MoPo has told the players and staff on the coach that there are NO players coming in. Source - straight from the man himself on the bus.

Agree5 Disagree2

I know people will shout me down but I'm not impressed if this is the case.
We NEED someone who is going to get goals. Ricky hasn't had a great time, JR is missing more than he gets and we appear to have nothing else apart from youngsters. Whilst I applaud our youth set up, to succeed in this division we need a proven goal machine, some back up defence owing to the injuries and suspensions and we have nothing. I don't think we are going down before people say that and in Pocahontas I have faith. But I really hoped we would get something in.

Agree6 Disagree5

But we don't NEED to buy anyone this window. why not give the youth a chance in the league and cup games and see how they get on, then re-evaluate in the summer and see exactly what we need! we're not desperate for players, so why buy now? maybe a loan striker would have been good, but what a confidence boost for gallacher! Poch is basically saying, we don't need anyone because I have sufficient talent in the youth team. so let's see how we get on, support the team, stop moaning and whining about not signing anyone and deal with it! some "fans" on here really wind me up

Agree7 Disagree5

You never win anything with kids. Someone famous once said that, but for the life of me I can't remember who.

Why don't we put a little faith in what we have. We did just hold one if europes best to a 2-2 draw. COYR

Agree4 Disagree2

So it apparently means we aren't true fans unless we think the same way as you?
I think our youth set up is fantastic. But you cannot rely on it. How can you say we don't need anyone until the summer? We are seriously lacking goals and our defence is currently paper think with the injuries we have had.

Some people who put others down when they don't agree with them really winds me up.

Agree5 Disagree4

All i'm saying is, for this season the youth will suffice. Hooiveld is terrible, granted, but Yoshida IS capable of playing in this league, Lovren is injured, not dead, so he'll be back before then end of the season. Rodriguez needs to work on his finishing, ok, but at least he's getting in to the right positions, we're still making a lot of chances. it will come good. I'm saying we can wait till the summer when the right players are availble at the right prices. we don't need to panic buy. we're not getting relegated, we can't get in to Europe unless we win the FA cup. Why waste money on someone for the sake of it. Imagine being Sam Gallagher and your manager telling you that he's not getting a replacement in for a stroppy, £15 million pound Argie/Italian record signing because he thinks you're good enough to back up, and even challenge Rickie and J-Rod. What a confidence boost! Stoke have bought 3-4 strikers because they're desperate, West ham have loaned 3-4 players because they're desperate. we don't need it.

Agree6 Disagree1

The defence is not 'paper thin' 2 great right backs, possibly the best English left back in the league and another young one who's stated to be better, Clyne can play LB too. 4 good CB's, yes, for where we are Yoshida and Hooiveld are good enough to be back up, juat because you have unrealistic expectations doesn't mean they're bad players. We also have 2 young CB's who would be ready with a bit more experience. We struggle to put chances away but let's give Gallagher a go, should have had a hat trick vs arsenal but once he settles into the team he'll start putting them away. This 'lack of goals' has put us 9th in the table, 7 points clear of 10th and with Wanyama coming back and Lovren ahead of schedule we should stop conceding the sloppy goals. So no, we don't 'need' to sign anyone

Agree5 Disagree2

It makes me laugh the people have blind faith in the team even when it's apparent we are in need of help in some areas? And woh betide anyone who says different! Just Following there teams like blind sheep! Barrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Agree3 Disagree7

Would many of the sceptics have taken where we are the moment, at the start of this season?. I think not.
We have got to where we are in the main by using the youth coming through mixed with what we had already + Lovren and Wanyama. (Forget about the Italian/Argentinian t****r)

We are ninth in the league and unlikely over the course of the next few games to go up or down so why not leave alone and give some of the youngsters a chance. let's blood a few more and give them some more experience. With less pressure on the squad in not needing to avoid relegation or to qualify for Europe, let's the Saints lads show what they can do without worrying about having to buy overpriced overrated foreign 'stars'.
Keep the faith boys and girls. Show everyone this 'Southampton Way' can work. COYS

Agree4 Disagree1

Sheep? Says someone who's following the moany crowd. We just realise that we aren't going to sign all these fantastic players you seem to think we are. We we're in league one 3 seasons ago, nearly went out of business 5 years ago, now we're comfortably in the top half of the prem. Quality squads take time to build, we're not going to sign a whole new team in every transfer window like you seem to want us to, it would be foolish to sign a CB now anyway and would buying a striker be any better than someone who's been playing 'our' football for the last year? be patient, support the team and we'll get somewhere and probably have the backbone of the England team playing for us in a few years. Alternatively, if you don't like how the team is being built, save your money and stay at home on a Saturday.

Agree5 Disagree3

You only "need" additions, if you can't achieve the team goals with what you have. Our goal this season must be top half, good cup run and consolidation. Reassess in the summer for next season's goals. We have injuries which we would only be panic buying if we felt we had to replace and would only do so if we were chasing something. We aren't. Come on boys. slow and steady. We are not Pompey. This is not the time to spend millions bringing in players we don't need.

Mungochutney Saint.

Agree6 Disagree1

All interesting and valid opinions but to those that are saying calm down are you also not saying 'This season is over, there is nothing to play for so wait until next season'. Which as a Saints fan is bit crap isn't it? Don't bother to go to games or watch on the telly or look out for results because the results don't matter 'cause were not going to do anything.

That is not a good message in my book.

You never win anything with youngsters is also completely true - it was said about an exceptional bunch of youngsters at one the biggest and richest clubs in the world in 1992. Have they [or anyone else] done that since? Nope.

Agree2 Disagree3

Why is everyone on about buying a striker the way hooveild puts the ball in the net i'd convert him into a striker

Apparently an 'unnamed' Premier League club have made a bid for Wes Hoolahan of Norwich. I wonder whether this could be Saints? He's a little older than our 'standard' signing, but rumour was that his price would be low. He could replace the hole that Ramirez has made due to injury and also play in place of Rodriguez on the flank, if he's drafted into the lead striker role (in place of Lambert or Gallagher if they get injured). Any thoughts?

Southampton have put a bid on Muriel for 13.5m and David astori for 11m

Source-a web site

Believable5 Unbelievable16

I saw this on tv sport

Agree2 Disagree6

What website?

Agree4 Disagree1

Seems just to good to be true but if we hadthe bids accepted how would we get personal terms and a medical done in 6 hours when they are both in ITALY!?ed any truth in these?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - sorry not heard anything about that.}

I doubt we would get Muriel. Excellent striker for udinese. Would be chuffed as hell if he came.

We need to tie down astori if we want him. Others are sniffing apparently

Agree4 Disagree0

Great more jackanory story's from the la la gang!
Team coach has already gone left for London?that the end of January tranfer new roll on summer!!!

Agree6 Disagree0

There are a few clubs looking at astori according to the press, I would suggest that this is his agent trying to drum up business.

Agree2 Disagree1

You know all the staff don't travel on the team coach right? Les Reed and KL will more than likely take over transfers without NC here, MoPo may have identified who he wants and left it up to them.

Agree3 Disagree0

The manager won't travel to sign players! That will be done by suits! Jesus

Agree3 Disagree0

To be fair MoPo did say 'other people' deal with transfers once identified BUT we ain't signing anyone on.

Hernandez seen at rownhams services.

Could be rubbish but I love the sound of him in our team would fit right in.

Believable4 Unbelievable10

Would love him at Saints but i've seen him linked with another two clubs on twitter plus his agent's come out saying he's going to stay at United. As much as i'd love to believe it I can't.

Agree0 Disagree0

Why would a professional footballer stop of for a wazz at rownhams. please! You might have well said the Queen was spotted in Millbrook today. !

Agree4 Disagree1

I was in Millbrook today, at Olivers Chippy. I saw the Queen queuing up for a pickled egg and and a pea fritter.

Agree8 Disagree1

Believe it or not, footballers still need to have a wee wee. Unless there is a secret toilet near rownhams somewhere that footballers go to? Plus, remember chunk from the goonies? Michael Jackson knocked on his door to have a wee wee so Hernandez at rownhams is totally feasible.

From Gazzetta dello sport, we are chasing a late deal for Roma defender Mehdi Benati.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

Very good defender and he scores a few goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

I've never heard of him!

Agree2 Disagree2

Hope so, one of the best defenders in the Serie A. Was one of the main reasons why Roma went on such a long unbeaten run.

Agree1 Disagree0

If you mean Benatia he's been very good for Roma this season

Agree0 Disagree0

That's why I had never heard of him - I'd spelt his name wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

This guy must mean benatia but he's only moved to Roma in the summer

Yes dani only joined us in the summer but even still that could be a good signing but doubt that will happen

It is now official, Crystal Palace have signed Jason Puncheon on a four-and-a-half year deal. This means that in the past few days, Southampton have either loaned or sold Danny Fox, Dani Osvaldo and Jason Puncheon meaning we now lack squad depth. I hope we now sign a player or two or that the youth can really step up.

Believable9 Unbelievable3

There is so much potential coming through we are not going to worry about squad depth except maybe a a CB

Agree6 Disagree7

We have not really affected our squad depth. Calm down.

Agree5 Disagree7

As an addendum to my last reply Danny Ings would be a great signing to add to the pool of potential. and I still think big Sam will step up to mark

Agree9 Disagree0

What squad depth? Lol

Agree5 Disagree0

Gotta say i'm quite disappointed punch has gone he has been awesome for palace lately

Agree8 Disagree2

Except for taking penalties

Agree6 Disagree0

We're getting rid of our dead wood - the guys who don't / haven't played for us this season. what's the issue? were 9th. players coming back from injury. have faith. stop thinking we can win the Prem this season! remember where we were last season. the season before that. and before that! If you want instant success - go support city, or another team that struggle to field a Brit! COYR

Agree6 Disagree1

We are only losing 2 players who we have used this season in Fox and Osvaldo, both have hardly played and neither are essential back up. Our options are hardly slim suddenly we only are lacking a tiny bit more than at the start of the season with more youth stepping up to cover. Relax, we will be fine.

Saint Phil

Agree3 Disagree1

Relax, we will be fine!
Let's see if your still saying that come the end of the season!
Let's hope!

Agree4 Disagree3

Our squad was thin before the window opened.

We need a centre back and left back as cover. We need a striker as relying on a 18 year old is unfair on him.

Agree4 Disagree2

Spose its unfair on Luke Shaw that we relied on him last year when he was 17 and this year when he is 18.

Agree3 Disagree1

Wes hollahan on his way?

Agree0 Disagree6

Just seen on tv cardiff are
after astori
if that's ryght it is one more missed

Agree2 Disagree0

I'm sure that without any signings we will finish top 10. I'd get more pleasure watching Isgrove, Rowe, Stephens, Turnbull, Reed, Seager and Targett (to name a few) than someone on loan or some desperation signing.

Seeing Gallagher do so well gives me so much pride as a fan. I think we should enjoy that experience for the rest of the season and strengthen properly with early summer purchases.

Jannersaint

Agree6 Disagree0

Yes it's all well and good that our youth are showing promise. But. We also need experience and we are really lacking some quality in most of the key positions at the moment. Yes I think we have got rid of some dead wood but I don't agree that with Osvaldo being part of that. He showed real promise when he played and if it hadn't been for the suspension and the stupid fisticuffs, I think he would have gone on to do well for us.
I will have faith until the day I die but I do think some of he momentum at the start of this season has gone and I think we will just scrape top half without new experienced blood. Not too bad but not great when you consider how well the season started and how quickly people took notice of us

Agree1 Disagree0

Squad depth? we have not had it all season and thankfully have not needed it.

Will need to build it if are serious about doing better.

Agree0 Disagree0

Few points for discussion:
1. Talk of Champions league seems to have gone away?
2. Plenty of talk about strength of academy but is this just positive spin for the reality that is we've offloaded some players to balance the books?
3. Puncheon was excellent for us last season so who's decision was it that he left?
4. Luke Shaw will leave in the summer so what's the plan to replace him?
5. MoPo will probably leave in the summer so who will replace him?
6. Are we all going to blame Katerina? Well I won't join in.
7. Is it time for a reality check? We're back in the BPL and we should all be thankful without getting carried away
8. Goodbye Johnny Depp, what a waste of time, effort and money

Agree0 Disagree0

Am I alone in thinking Osvaldo could've been something special for us. bust up aside. ?

It's done osvaldo is gone!

Believable23 Unbelievable7

Adios . .

Agree20 Disagree0

Good riddance

Agree19 Disagree3

Best move for the club, and it shows the solidarity we have as a squad.

Agree13 Disagree5

And yet it's going to be incredibly short-sighted and ultimately risky to not replace him - and yet that doesn't look likely. 3 strikers, one who's got 1 game's experience, 1 who's not getting any younger and has gone a bit off the boil, and 1 who whilst he is scoring could also be single-handedly winning us games if he was more consistent - we need another!

Agree16 Disagree1

Glad he's gone, but seemingly with players only leaving St. Mary's I can't wait for May 12th.

Agree10 Disagree0

Finally - someone else has posted this. Lambert or Rodriguez gets injured, Fonte gets injured and we could easily lose four or five on the trot. Then things aren't so rosy. After all we all know that we need to create about 8 chances to score, whilst generally the opposition take about 3.

No squad is so good that you couldn't do with strengthening it.

Agree10 Disagree0

Feel like we MUST get in a striker, or even bring back Mayuka.

Wish Holtby came over. think he woulda been great if we have to put jrod up top when RL is injured etc.

Is the consensus that we won't bring anyone in at all? think we look thin.

Agree13 Disagree1

Think we should get ings from burnley
in a bit quick
better than nothing and could
sirprise a few people

Agree3 Disagree4

There's nothing from saints on the official site or twitter, he's not gone yet

Agree2 Disagree3

There is vision/pics of him going into a medical facility in Italy.

The two times we make big exciting buys, they both end up being disasters.

ps. ings would be a great get for strengthening the squad. how much is rated to go for?

Agree3 Disagree0

I think Saints business is all done for the day.

Osvaldo has gone (and best forgotten) and we have kept all our young stars and team spirit is intact.

Two more wins and we are safe and I can relax then.

Agree2 Disagree1

Juventus' official twitter says Osvaldo is doing his medical by now. He's leaving for sure.

Swedish Saint

Agree1 Disagree0

Don't forget Guly can play upfront! ;)

Agree4 Disagree3

Osvaldo has failed the medical at juventus - he punched the running machine for beeping at him.

Agree9 Disagree0

Apparently Osvaldo is straight into the Juventus team for Saturday after his 'nightmare in England' so I hope he's gone otherwise Juventus are breaking a lot of FIFA and EUFA rules :-D

I'm not sure, perhaps someone could confirm, but with our current departures I think Saints have one of the smallest, if not the smallest squad, in the Premiership.

This doesn't sit comfortably with me because if you were looking at the club as a player would this say 'We are ambitious' probably not. Having said that I'm just a frustrated Saints fan and not in anyway connected to professional football so I probably know as much as a whelk! :-D

Agree1 Disagree1

Quite a few people spotted a twitter post (tweet?) saying medical facilities at the uni have been booked by the club from 3pm onwards so something could be happening. The tweet has since been deleted.

Agree2 Disagree1

I think MoPO will turn to the youth squad to fill any gaps between now and the end of the season. If the kids are as good as he says, then might as well use them! - Guly can play upfront at a stretch, and not saying he'll be a world beater, but our team has never been about 'the indivudual' and we'll cope until the end of the season.

Agree1 Disagree0

We have enough in the squad to finish in the top 10 so I recon take our time and look for the right fit in the summer but this is a golden opportunity to give mayuka a fair chance, he has not really been given enough time to show weather or not he is good enough and it is frustrating for me as a fan from the outside because he looked very promising. Bring back mayuka the bazooka.

Agree1 Disagree0

^ Isn't Mayuka on a season long loan, and therefore can't be brought back?

Agree1 Disagree1

I'm sorry but saying things like 'two more wins and we're safe' or that 'we'll cope until the end of the season' hardly screams ambition. We're not a relegation fighting team anymore, that's why we spend the money on marquee signings, whether they flop or not! We want to be going places. Personally I'll be disappointed if we end up 'coping' by chucking Guly up top if our strikers get injured etc, we should be looking to improve and getting someone in. A squad with 3 strikers is not physically an ambitious one, even if it might be mentally!

Agree1 Disagree0

No, Mayuka returned from France a few weeks ago after picking up a long term injury.

Agree1 Disagree1

^ I agree, but we'e never bought anyone 'just for the sake of it' and January is known to be a tough month to try and get the right players. Obviously we want to stay as high as possible in the league and continue to show 'ambition' but if the youth are as good as we are led to believe, that may not mean settling or coping.

Agree2 Disagree0

Bring back mayuka! PACE ABUSE!

Agree3 Disagree0

Let's just hope he doesn't punch some juventus players lights out before the end of the season or we definitely won't be getting our £15 000 000

Agree1 Disagree0

Southampton failed in an attemp to take Wilfred zaha and lewis holtby on loan

Believable2 Unbelievable18

No, we didn't

Agree15 Disagree0

We actually tried to buy holtby but the zaha one is a lie

Agree1 Disagree12

Think pochettino being a bit
shotsighted if saints don't get
anyone in today
j rod and ricky not scoring like
strikers should be to win matches

Agree4 Disagree1

It doesn't look good does it. An Under 21 team playing Premiership football? We need some experience too. It's beginning to look like cost-cutting to me.

Like the season we got relegated from the Championship when we were going the 'Ajax' route with youth.

Agree6 Disagree2

Hardly seems to be cost cutting, we're getting rid of the unused and unwanted. Osvaldo has had a scrap with the team and is outside the camp so him leaving seems logical, Sharp is always on loan and getting rid of Fox is just logical. The main squad is relatively untouched and Pochettino has stated he has backing if he wants to use it to bring anyone in. There is a reason Katharina wants him to stay on and that is success matters to her too.

Agree2 Disagree0

Osvaldo hasn't gone yet, so currently only ONE player in the 25 man squad has left. You're right it probably is a cost cutting measure, to get rid of the dead weight and the needless wages we're paying so we're defo in the clear for the FFP

Agree0 Disagree1

Still think we need a natural goal scoring poacher. Remember Moran, Pahars, Boyer etc. If we had taken our chances we would be in the top 6. Seems strange we never gave Billy a chance with our inability of finishing chances off.

Agree1 Disagree0

Why would we buy one greedy ill disciplined player as a replacement for another greedy ill disciplined player who we had to flog for being a greedy ill disciplined player.

Believable1 Unbelievable11

Think your find we were infor holtby and lost out to Fulham!!
And that's it don't expect anyone else coming in

Agree2 Disagree6

I don't want Cork to go, we need depth of squad and he provides this with reliable assurance.
As for Morgan leaving ARSEnal can well you know the rest.
I do like that we are looking to youth, but we need to ensure there is a good mixture of youth and experience in all positions. I hope Gallagher goes from strength to strength.

Right. As it stands 0 players in, 3 players out.
Dani Osvaldo- Juventus (loan with view to £15m permanent deal)
Jason Puncheon- Crystal Palace (2.5m permanent deal)
Jonathan Forte- (Contract cancelled- able to move for free)

Believable6 Unbelievable2

Fox and Arron Martin both gone also.

Agree5 Disagree0

Tadanari Lee, Barnard and Sharp

Agree5 Disagree0

So that's 8 out with no ins?

Agree6 Disagree0

Not forgetting gaston and lovern out!
Where's the depth of sqaud!!
Not to mention the players that have left on other transfer windows are first team squad is so weak on numbers? Let's hope we don't lose anymore player with injury! Or we will be playing a whole under 21's team!

Agree5 Disagree0

7 out, one of which was in the 25 man squad, replaced by an 18 year old, Osvaldo not gone yet

Agree0 Disagree2

Seeing as we only need two more wins to stay up and we are very unlikely to over take Man U for a European spot through the league this is actually the best time possible to give the younger players a chance, keep the faith!

Agree5 Disagree1

Out of all the above players who will we actually miss?

Not one of them has made any major contribution to the team this season.

It's okay, it's okay shhh now

Agree1 Disagree0

Thats ok then if we get any injurys who do you suggest we play school boys?

Agree0 Disagree0

We have only lost Osvaldo as a real first team player. Injuries are part of football and Lovren and Ramirez will be back in a few weeks.

We are covered on the left with Clyne and Targett. We have experience. Bringing in someone new would be nice but not necessary.

Agree0 Disagree0
