We're set to make a 6m bid for city's gudietti. I think he could be a great signing coyr

1.) 21 Jul 2014
£6m for a guy who managed six games for Stoke last season (no goals)?

Not exactly a bargain.

2.) 21 Jul 2014
Deemed to be the next ibra plus he came on a sub for all those matches so dident ex actually get a fair chance to show off.

3.) 21 Jul 2014
I have heard it will be a loan, with an £6mil option at the end of the season.
Sounds more sensible as he hardly thrived at stoke last year

4.) 21 Jul 2014
This standard of player is not good enough!

5.) 21 Jul 2014
Gudietti, is not a high-calibre player/marquee signing - totally agree with SaintGibbs perspective we are replacing quality proven EPL players with those of no such experience and IMO not better or even equal.
It does appear the board is cashing in!
Does progress stop here?

6.) 21 Jul 2014
I disagree WillsaSaint, we have signed the 2 stand out players from Eredivive last year both clearly have a lot of ability and I think are potentially as good if not better even if they aren't proven in the prem, Gudietti would be one for the future as Koeman knows him well and managed to get the best out of him so could be good

7.) 21 Jul 2014
Although I do agree we need some prem proven players, Caulker would be good as would a keeper and then a marque signing to get us excited would be nice!

8.) 21 Jul 2014
Who exactly are we replacing with him?

he is clearly one for the future and our other departures have been replaced already (i am keeping blind faith in targett to replace shaw. )

9.) 21 Jul 2014
If you think they are not cashing in you better open your eyes wider. the 70m "war chest" is a joke. we cashed 15m for 8th place. 60m from transfers and a reported 80m from the sky deal. I bet we don't even spend the 70.

10.) 22 Jul 2014
Anyone not who does not think the board are cashing in may wish to open their eyes a little wider.

K. Liebherr has previously stated she has no interest in football, now she does?

Cortese has been ousted over money when the work he had done and attention to detail was phenomenal.

We have a "70m war chest" yes but. 60m is from transfers.

We get 15m for 8th place and around 80m from the new sky deal (correct me if needed on that figure) where is this money going?

Now I am all for having a healthy, financially stable club but to me it seems like we are a business again and not a CL vision team.

I hope I am proving wrong.

11.) 22 Jul 2014
The only reason we won't spend the 70 mil is if we don't need to. Just because we've made that much doesn't mean the club should blow it just because.

The Saints aren't cashing in.

Their current business platform (buying/selling/academy) is a mould form the great Billy Beane's Moneyball Theory.

The Moneyball theory is essentially that of the stock market: "sell high, buy low. " He has applied this fundamental Wall Street practice to the game of baseball? The Saints are using the same formula. Yes its business stats for sport! (sabermetrics approach ).

Many sports clubs are using this approach. Especially "small market" clubs such as the Billy Beane's Oakland A's and obviously the Saints.

The Saints will be fine as long as they stay the course and they will.

Luke Shaw is valued at $10M for a left back. We cashed in (sold high). Before doing so the Saints would have done the following asset evaluation.

1. If Luke Shaw had a better left midfielder in front of him would the Saints be 10 points better in the League standings?

2. If the Saints had another left back of the $10M range would they have been 10 points better in the league standings?

3. If Luke Shaw is sold greater than the $10M dollar asset value and the Saints bring in another left back asset value of the same range will we loose points in the league standings.

The sports science asset management system work.

The Saints have down their homework and have secured data for players all over the world.

They will thrive, survive and prosper. Be patient. It make take two season but I guarantee that they will get it right.

Buy low and sell high for long-term team success. Love the movement!!

{Ed001's Note - sabermetrics approach is nothing to do with anything at Southampton. Nor is it used by any football team as it can not be translated over. The one attempt to do a similar thing was Commolli's stats based scouting methods, which failed miserably because football is not an individual game like baseball. Forget sabermetrics, it is an irrelevance and to suggest they are using it just tells me you don't understand what it actually is. Yes all clubs use stats to quantify parts of a player's game, but it doesn't decide the signings in any way. Forget Moneyball as well, Saints are not using any new system recently devised at all. They are simply trying to get the club on an even financial keel after the Cortese era. Then they plan to expand the club by increasing revenue to allow them to spend more in the future, starting with a larger stadium. There is no plans to go down the moneyball route at all.}

13.) 22 Jul 2014
I think people are forgetting how much wages come in to play.

A player on £20k a week costs the club £1m a year.

If Jayrod is on that wage and cost the club £8m to buy, over a 5 year contract that's £13m, plus bonuses.

Osvaldo £14m cost, £40k a week is £2m a year total over 5 years is £24m.

Get my point here?

It's not just as simple as the transfer fees, it's the long term costs that are factored in too.

14.) 22 Jul 2014
Saintysaintsaint - you missed the point. and if you think we don't need to heavily re-invest. this is the premier league not the tyro! West ham just spent 15m on striker.

15.) 22 Jul 2014
Them lights they roll over st Mary's for the grass when the sun isn't shining must set us back a bit. I can hear the humming from my house and I'm 5 miles away!

16.) 22 Jul 2014
Jim, I do agree that's how wages work, but when we sell luke shaw for £30m, that doesn't include Manchester United wages for him paid to us? So wages don't really matter, as when we sell, we free up wages. And yes I understand we get money in instalments, and our transfers will also be paid in the same way.
But please correct me if I'm missing something obvious

Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't we have a debt of almost £30m for outstanding transfer fees. Then the fact our new training facilities cost a further £30m. So £60m surely has gone on that. Then with planning for our stadium expansion that needs to be budgeted for. Think some people just think the board and running off with briefcases of cash.
