WHat's the situation with Promes, Eds? Is Marco Silva replacing Pellegrino? Carillo rumours off?

{Ed002's Note - (a) He needs persuading but Southampton are trying. (b) Perhaps. (c) Not that I am aware.}

I’ve done a little digging on Guido Carrillo and he does look very promising. I was unsure before as his goal scoring record didn’t look great but now I’ve had a look its much more impressive.

Carrillo is pushing 6ft 3 and 13 ½ stone so is very good in the air. Whoscored.com say his strengths are aerial duels and headed attempts, he likes flicking the ball on to teammates and is dangerous from freekicks. He looks like a good Pelle replacement. The bonus is he’s only 26.

Goals-wise, he has scored 15 goals and has 4 assists from 75 appearances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League/ Europa League, but only 24 of those were starts and his average sub appearance time is under 20 minutes, so 15 goals from 24 starts is pretty impressive. This season alone he has scored 8 goals from 24 appearances, only 6 of which were starts. When you factor in the minutes he’s played, its only an average of 23 minutes per game so his goals per minute record is very impressive. Despite only playing a bit part at Monaco this season, he is having his best season their so let's hope the form stays with him and he can hit the ground running. All we need to do now is convince him to come…….

thanks for the stats figo, great analysis
Let's hope (when/ if signs) he carries on that ratio.

At least some one in! :) Really hope we can sign Promes as well. Quite sure Carillo's incoming means either Gabbiadini or Long will leave before the window shuts.

Carillo's stats are pretty impressive, have to admit. Hopefully he will fit nicely to PL. His aerial skills don't harm a bit!

But still, we would need number 10 player!

The stats you've outlined Figo, seem a lot like Gabbiadini's stats when he first arrived. I'm not going to compare the two because they're 2 completely different footballers. But if he is what you say, he'll get into good goalscoring positions and beat players to the ball, he'll get goals.
If he follows how Lambert used to play, which was to peel round to the back post and attack the fullback, I'm sure he'll become a quality goalscorer for the club.

I also think the signing of Carrilo signals that we won't probably be getting rid of MP anytime soon. Simple because they've worked together. It seems like a signing he wanted to make. I would imagine he's stated that he feels he needs a big striker and this guy would be perfect. The statement that he's costing 19.2m clearly shows that the club have a have faith in him.
What's everyone elses thoughts on this? I just think with the Silva rumours we're all just putting 2 and 2 together.

If and still a big if we sign QP then definitely don’t think he is going anywhere.

I’ve said before I don’t think MP is going anywhere. The board like him and RK said a couple of weeks ago the slate’s clean after the VVD saga spoiled the first half of the season. The board will keep him all season if they can. We have Brighton and West Brom coming up and a minimum of 4 points is required, preferably 6 so we have some points and confidence going into the Liverpool game. It’ll be an interesting couple of weeks as whilst we have Brighton and West Brom, the teams around us are either playing each other or up against top 8 opposition. If results do start to go in our favour, things may look much better in a few weeks time. If they don’t, perhaps the board may consider a managerial change with 10 games to go, but its hard to believe that someone new can come in, with a new coaching staff and pick the team up in the final 10 games. A number of the teams around us have harsher run ins than us so we may be crossing our fingers like the ‘good’ old days.

Just say he doesn’t get the sack and we scrape through by the skin of our teeth and stay in the PL will it be thanks to MP. I will just ask you all how many of you really want him to be our manager next season? I may be wrong but I reckon about 75% don’t want him staying. We really shouldn’t be where we are so let’s not keep banging on about how we never replaced Pelle and Mane etc. CP was in the same situation last season and had the VVD disruption effecting him as well and we sacked him and finished 8th and a Cup Final as well. I am sorry guys I just don’t get any of this. We need to smell the coffee and get a manager in that can motivate what is in fact a group of talented players that are not playing to their true potential.

I think more than 75% want him gone for sure! I think the board would like to make a decision on MP at the end of the season though, rather than get into the habit of midseason changes. We saw that with Puel last season, they gave him the full year, then took their time with the decision to sack him. Some people grumbled at that wait, and they had a point, but what I took away from it was that the board wasn't taking these decisions lightly. This makes me think MP will get the full season unless our league position gets so desperate that they start to really panic about us staying up.

All conjecture really, but this is the impression I get. Good to get Carillo in, Promes too and it's a pretty perfect window imo, even if we left it a bit late.

No animosity here 123 honest but you posted that you didn’t want Carillo? I understand your point, it may work out but smacks a little about desperation to score goals and his CV is not impressive. I think we have players in our squad that can score goals. They unfortunately have been coached badly. I really hope Carillo does the business but he only will if we change our style of play to allow him to do so.

I did post that I didn't really want him, he's here now though so no point crying over it. I thought he seemed a bit pricey, but he should still help and hopefully I was wrong about him.
