No!, Southampton FC are taking a stand and rightly so, if we don't do this then the next southampton player that another club shows interest in will do the same as VVD. The Club tell the player when he can talk to another club and he has to accept that, end of. HE needs to knuckle down and do his job to the best of his abilities. If he does this then i'm sure the Club will reach an agreement with the player to be sold next season. We need to do this not just because we don't want to sell the highest paid player in the clubs history, giving him a 6 year contract that he was happy to sign last year, making him the captain of the club in the process and supporting him and paying him whilst he was injured for half a season. We need to do this to show other clubs we won't be ripped and pillaged anymore. But more importantly that it is NOT accepable for any of our Southampton players to just hold us to ransome whenever they feel like it.

Have to say even ignoring the principle of not wanting to sell VVD, I think 40 mil plus sakho would be a terrible terrible deal, especially given the rumoured figures. Even worse if we then go and throw all that at wimmer!

I agree with the above posts but I think getting VVD to sign that 6 year deal was pushed through in the interest of SFC. They knew how good he is and wanted to protect their investment to get the best deal when it came to interest from other clubs. They knew it would happen and that is not rocket science, my only problem with us digging our heels in is that it seems to have completely engulfed our pre season and must have something of a disruptive influence on the rest of the squad. Very noble to stand up for your principles but that could affect our season, I won't be popular but I say get rid of him for the best money we can get and invest that in new players that won't create a similar problem. Football is big business these days and as in any commercial enterprise if you can make massive profits from an asset most times you would do the deal. VVD may get another serious injury and then your prized possession may be worth nothing. I say sell him and move on. We have a season to concentrate on and it is only 9 days away.

60m he gets 10 percent Celtic get 15percent 15m gone now he is 45 and that will at 1.00 a week knowing Liverpool. Klopp is a real tossed with this and I think they have built there season round getting him. The board should say no and then if he doesn't play he will miss World Cup games etc. He needs to be told he can go in the summer next year if things are done the correct way. I use to think Liverpool were alright but f@@k me are they desperate and showing a real lack of class over this.

The player signed the contract though Chrisdownj, he didn't have to, nobody pinned him down and threatened to hurt his family lol

All joking aside When the window closes he will get his head down. History tells us this with spider wanyamma and fonte. When the window has closed and he realises he isn't going to another club hill will want to play.

Why should Southampton be held to ransome by a player when ever they feel like it? By giving the player what he wants shows all of our stars and more so our amazing young talent coming trough at the club that they can't just demand a move to another club and threaten never to play for us again.

We have to show them it is not going to happen at Southampton. Also why should Liverpool be allowed to just totally bypass Southampton and speak directly with the player? If they had followed the rules and contacted us in the first place they may well have reached an agreenment by now. For me we need to reach an agreement with VVD an if that cannot happen we then simply tell him he is staying untill next season but we will then put him up for sale for the price we deem fair.

He signed the contract Ben because he knew his value would be increased and so did his agent. Then when he wants to leave they both get more money out of the deal. SFC can stand firm agreed but I'm pretty sure he will be gone by the end of the window. I know it is morally wrong but what is the sensible alternative from a financial point of view, the game is all about money these days and we would be paying out shed loads with no end product. I agree with standing firm but will we get other high quality players wanting to come here if they think they won't be able to move on. Just my opinion Ben that's all.

Lets keep him. what's he going to do? We paid him for 9 months for doing nothing, so what is he really going to do if we refuse to sell him? Holland are very unlikely to make the World Cup, so unless he comes back what is his next move from here until the next window in Jan - go to Sprinkles and get fat?

I know were fed up with Liverpool but if the rumours are true that they met vvd surely he's in breach off contract allowing the meeting to take place discussing formations etc long before any official bid has happened I for one blame him as much as scousehampton for this mess, fine him 2 weeks wages, buy a CB which we need anyway and when we've done that make him put a transfer request in and get the full asking price, I wouldn't want to be in a changing room with someone who clearly doesn't want to be there.

If Neymar is going to Paris St G for £190 million then SFC are right to hold out for as much money as possible for VVD.

Given the ridiculous amounts of money Man U, Man C and Chelsea are paying out for very average players then VVD must be worth at least 75 to80 million. He could be a world class defender if with Real Madrid or Barcelona, but not with any other PL side, especially not Liverpool.

VVD should wait, at least until Summer 2018, to go. He needs to prove himself over fitness, after his long injury last year.

VVD needs to think for himself, not his agent. What is his ambition? If he wants to achieve world class status and then get truly rewarded, Liverpool is very very bad advice.

Have patience lad!

Trouble is I can see a situation arising that if he stays he will be less popular with our supporters than Lovren even though he is still playing for us . Just seems a no win situation with just about all parties involved. What kind of reception will he get and when he makes mistakes, which he will, the crowd will get completely on his back. Just can't see it working.

I can't see too much problem with supporters Chrisdownj I'm sure the club will advise him to make a statement about how he was wrongly advised by his agent, committed to Southampton and is changing his agent due to the speculation etc.

He'll plays well for us, be forgiven by most

The smoke will settle and he'll then be sold in the next window!

Lets be honest there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Well if you think that then what is the point of all the punish him, stick him in the reserves comments from so many people on here. I just don't get it, he doesn't want to play for us anymore so why keep him . He will still get paid massive money and quite likely just go through the motions if he plays for us again. He won't though believe me the damage has well and truly been done. Anybody go to the game tonight? I did it was woeful in fact worse than that.

I guess it really depends on how he handles the situation from here. To be honest, the lack of a statement from him is a sure sign that he will never play for us again. To me it's shockingly un-professional from both Liverpool and VVD. They just want to get him cheap! I don't know how it will pan out Chris, I was just merely stating that in 6 months it'll all be forgotten about really.
