Scott Sinclair in talks with WBA another target we should have gone for but no! Were to busy chasing shadows!I'm starting to think that saints are all spent up!Going for players they know will never come to us showing intent to the fans keeping them happy! while at the same time not having to spent anymore money?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree we have been chasing shadows. I don't agree it's purely to keep the fans happy. I just think we are trying to run before we can walk.

Agree0 Disagree0

So you don't have faith in the Southampton management despite everything they've done?

Have a little faith guys. Just because we haven't signed 5 or six players doesn't mean they've done a bad job.

I would argue that what they have managed to do so far is exceptional, with the signings of Lovren and Wanyama.

I would also argue that if we added one more quality center back, one more attacking Midfield, and one quality striker, we would have a side that is capable of challenging for a champions league spot, but the finishing touches will be for next year.

Saints leadership under Cortese has been precise, and set out to do everything that they said they would. It is evident from listening to players like Morgan Schneiderlin that he has complete trust in Nicola. Even MoPo demonstrated his support of Nicola at the end of last season.

Why then if the players and Manager display their trust in Nicolas ability to deliver, are fans on here moaning about the lack of signings.

We have a clear policy regarding players we want to sign. They have to IMPROVE the team, as well as fitting other criteria to ensure that Southampton is financially viable.

We are Southampton! We are not Man City, or Chelsea, or any other club. we do things the Southampton way, so if you don't like it why not go and support some other club.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said, St Christopher! Some of the posts on here are becoming absurd, with persons wanting to sign players who are much worse than who we already have. Next, they will want Jonny from the local under 11s because he scored a few goals last season.
As MP has already said we will bring in players who will add quality to the squad. The club knows who they are interested in and, again, MP has said that if those players can not be signed then he is satisfied to wait. Absolutely correct attitude. We want the right sort of player and NO panic buys-they always are doomed to fail.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi st Christopher
Are you Nicola Cortese P. A by any chance?
Or on the Southampton pay roll!
Or do you just love him!
Chill out man it's a banter site?

Agree0 Disagree0

Lol, yes that's right!

Seriously, I'm just a fan that has a little faith in the man that brought us from the brink of liquidation, to 14th in the Premier league last year, and looked at how he's managed the club.
Continuous, sustainable, growth is the order of the day, not boom and bust.

Agree0 Disagree0

St Christopher and St Martin we have added class signings of Wanyama and Lovren which has been a great bit of business, but Poch and Cortese have failed to sign a striker and a winger for being over ambitious in going for Damiao and Obsvaldo who would have been class signings but have both rejected moves to us both would have been very costly and IMO not worth it as we could have got a 2 or maybe even 3 quality additions for the same price, people like Kouyate are at smaller clubs who have a lot of potential and could be a great signing but is less well known who would really want to come to us. We should continue with our normal transfer philosophy and sign young and up and coming players, they don't have to cost loads and be foreign to add something to the team, like IMO we should look at some young up and coming championship players like Jordan Rhodes, Callum Mcmanaman, Thomas Ince or Matt Phillips who have the potential to be good players in our first team but I guess you don't see them as any better than what we've got as they're probably not yet but they will be in the future.

Agree0 Disagree0

To the "nameless" one-so why have an Academy if we are going to purchase players who are not as good as our first 11? What message does that give to our youngsters who have been promised they have a fast track possible to the first team?

Sorry, you just do not seem to know what the club is trying to achieve and the model it has built.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Man city were s***tier than we were a couple of years ago and it took a couple of seasons for them to get a good squad together

Agree0 Disagree0

We never wanted to sign a winger, despite numerous fans stating that we were after one. The right players weren't available.

Just like we were never going to sign a right back, since Chambers was good enough to make the step up. Still you lot didn't believe me then, do you believe me now? Awesome debut display by Callum today Loving the fact we had 3 18yr olds start. Getting closer to 50% of the first team being home-grown!

So saints miss out on another target! We're aiming to high if the fans can see this why can't the club? There have been a lot of great players sighned by other clubs in the bottom half of the league in this tranfer window that we could of got if we hadn't been wasting are time going after silly tranfer targets. time is running out for us?
And this seems strangely like it did in January lots of rumours but none of them ever happened!!
Talk is cheap! There are a lot of teams around Southampton the likes of Newcastle Norwich Cardiff to name just a few that have spent wisely this tranfer window and have spent more! We've improved but so has everyone else?
All this talk of top half Finnishes is just disrespectful to the other clubs! If we stay up this season I for one will think we've had a good season?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You sound a bundle of laughs! We still have a couple of weeks left of the transfer window, we have signed two good quality players and the young stars we already have are the envy of many. I would like us to add another CB and a Striker, but I would not like to see us panic buy for the sake of it. Let's get a good start tomorrow and make the most of a relatively good looking early season fixture list. COYR!

Optimistic Saint

Agree0 Disagree0

Slightly dissapointed we havnt signed another striker but I fully believe in what we've got, and what the whole squad is capable of. let's all get behind our boys and look forward to what could be a very promising season for us! 3 points at brom tomorrow! come on u saints!

Agree0 Disagree0

I totally agree. Wait for the people saying we are doom bringers but this whole pre season has been extremely surprising for me. I have no idea why we have been trying to get some of the big names when there have been some fantastic players go to other teams around us. A lot of the teams we will be aiming for have strengthened. Yes we have Wanyama and I think he will be fantastic. But. He is one person. We will still struggle in the same way we did. Walking balls into the net after dominating the midfield. Only to lose out on stupid goals.

I genuinely think we will struggle but stay up. I also think this will have been a massive eye opener for NC about what players think of us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Staying up should be easily achievable with this squad. It's got some very good players. I think top half is pushing it without the right boost to the attacking options but we should steer clear of the bottom spots with this team.

Agree0 Disagree0

So which target have we missed out on?

Agree0 Disagree0

Where have you officially seen that we have missed out. Look at we are still favourites to sign him. Stop listening to all the made up stories by the media. He may well go to Spurs but it ain't happening tonight. Patience!

Agree0 Disagree0

It seems to me, that there's been a load of people waiting for us to not sign anyone for a few weeks, so they can then point out Saints lack of signings, and highlight how we're getting to 'big for our boots', or we're 'trying to run before we can walk'

You realize that if we now sign one, or possibly two more players you are going to look stupid?

For the record, I stated we wouldn't be signing more than 3-4 players.
How did I know this? Because I look at how Nicola works, and can see a man in complete control, planning to take Southampton into battle for a Champions league spot. He has demonstrated a clear policy regarding signings over the last few years that's there to see for anyone with the nous to see it.

It's time to stop fooling ourselves. Osvaldo will not come to us, neither Damiao or Banega or any such big "stars".
Lets try and sign someone we can get before it's too late and the window closes.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So we should just sign players cause it´s what we should do and not players that actually strengthen the team?

I hear Titus Bramble and Lee Cattermole are available.

Come on everyone forget Osvaldo - he will not be signing for Saints! He does not want to play for us so let's concentrate on somebody who does!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why does everybody say he is not coming? Nobody has a clue what is happening especially the press who only want to sell papers. He may be a loose cannon but I don't think Osvaldo has actually been physically seen or heard in public saying the things that have been reported. Do not believe the media just because they are saying the things you don't want to hear. The bookies still have us as favourites to sign him and they always have more of an idea than the press.

Valencia have published a kpmg report on their finances that confirms their net debt (not sure exactly what this means but presumably after deducting current assets from total debt) is 275 million euros. They say they have a plan so in three years time they won't have to sell players which presumably means they have to sell now. Is Banega on his way?

http://www.football-espana.net/35265/valencia-debt-stands-€275m

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not likely to be Benega joining us, but we have inquired about taking another of their players 'Sofiane Feghouli' who is a young Algerian midfielder who qualifies through his French nationality to play here.

Confirmed this morning: Osvaldo will go to Spurs, Lambert will go to West Ham on deadline day as the International call up has gone to his head and caused squad disharmony, we're going to sell Shaw tomorrow to Chelsea for a peanut and a coat hanger. Cortese is going to hire Joe Kinnear as Head of Youth Development and pay Newcastle 12m plus Cork as compensation. Also sources confirm we will be relegated and wonder why we never signed Damiao, Osvaldo and every player we were rumoured with this transfer window.

Please, give the doomsday effect a rest. No-one knows anything. Just wait and look forward to tomorrow.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think people have been using any doomsday effect. Sorry but I don't get what you are referring to?

Agree0 Disagree0

That genuinely made me laugh.

Having said that. Why is it that if fans are jumping around singing everything is wonderful, why are we doomsbringers?
I have a certain amount of fear we have aimed higher than we should with a striker and think it could backfire on us.
I also think we should have signed an AM by now as what we have doesn't inspire me.
I am worried about the new defender. He had an awful season last year and hasn't inspired me historically or recently.

Does this mean I have no faith? Nope. I cannot wait for the new season! I just feel we have been caught napping in what we have done and what we perhaps should have done.

Agree0 Disagree0

This obviously a skate looking for a reaction this a ridiculous, Joe Kinnear bit was the best 12m + COrk ha

just read that spurs might steal osvaldo from us, hope this isent true

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Doesn't matter too much if it is, think we can get better.

Agree0 Disagree0

We clearly can't get better though can we or people would have signed by now! I understand the club are trying to move forward but some of the people we are going for is just silly. Players of his calibre will not sign for a club without European football. We should have looked at someone like kone even Defoe can still do a good job. Bent would have been a good signing as well his goal record speaks for itself. We are trying to much to early to mix with the bigger boys. Yes the club has ambition but with a World Cup next year players want to be showing there national team managers that they can do it in the European cups as well to boost there chances of selection.

Agree0 Disagree0

According to 'NewsNow' Osvaldo says he will go to Spurs but not Saints. I know he seems to have said he wants to be in London anyway, but it seems to me that MoPo and Cortese are a little deluded at to the standing of Saints outside the UK. Trying to sign these top players is a great and shows we are tring to moved forward, but these so called top players don't seem to see Saints as a 'big' team. We are just wasting valuable 'window' time chasing lost causes, unless they come just for the money. I think we are going to have to lower our sights a little. ABCW

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Once we can prove that we have the ability to challenge the top 4/5 in EPL then 'stars' may well be prepared to move here. but until then let's get real!

Agree0 Disagree0

How is it you have forgotten what happened re the transfer of Wanyama? Were the exact same sentiments not being quoted?

Suggest you just wait and see rather than start speculating-it wasn't correct for Wanyama and unlikely to be so now.

Spent a very productive day at work scrolling the internet for conformation of the osvaldo deal but the latest I hear is spurs, anyone have positve news,

Believable0 Unbelievable0

16 Aug 2013 17:25:13
It looks like Osvaldo has rewjected Saints and is only interested in Spurs or Inter Milan. So it looks like we've missed out again. Are we ever going to get another signing? Hopefully one is being lined up behind closed doors!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

16 Aug 2013 12:48:59
A lot going on in the papers about Osvaldo. Good player, but I would be surprised if we get him. The only reason is because Cortese is seen to be a hard character. I don't think he would put up with any crap like with Puncheon and Osvaldo does seem to be a bit nutty.

There are many other players we could go for who I believe would be better signings.

Destro, just broken into the italian team
Dybala, huge talent, starting for Palermo and only 19
Erik Lamela, linked to in the past
Damaio, again linked to us. Wanyama rejected us first, we could always go and offer the terms he needs to move
Rodrigo, 22 from Benfica
Adrian, again linked to us in the past.

Im worried were are not linked to any wingers though. Not happy with Guly or Punch

Realistic Saint

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not happy with Punch? Did you not watch at all last season? He was arguably our best player for the first half of the season, finished 2nd or 3rd top goal scorer in the league for us and tbh should have started more, we won't get Lamela as Roma want 30m would love it though as he is going to be world class in the future would love any of the players listed but Damiao probs won't happen either

Agree0 Disagree0

What's wrong with punch? one of our best players last year, scored a few important goals.

I know a lot of people don't want Osvaldo because of his attitude and stuff but let's be honest here and look at what he adds to the squad he scored 15 goals last season in 25 apps for Roma. Now that's really good considering he wasn't in the first 11 for each game he played he was mainly used as a sub. and there is no doubt that he will score goals for us plus I think it will help Ramirez out because he can pass the ball to someone that has the same creativity as him. whereas lambert is quality and everyone loves him, he doesn't have the same quality finishing as Osvaldo. now see it this way we have goals in all our players. if lambert gets 15 again, Osvaldo gets 15, and everyone else get 5-9 goals ( I mean the likes of lallana and Ramirez and jayrod Btw) we could have a very high finish on our hands and I can see the squad that is being built. MoPo managed to control Osvaldo while he was at Espanyol or however you spell it so why can't he control him now hey? this guy is going to bring quality to the team we are lacking in the final third! if we get himhe will be able to finish more of the chances we create in the box then our team can right now.

Think Ronaldinho Gacho would be a great sighning younger than anelka and his contract runs out in December think he could still do a job for us and would be a massive name to show intent all for a couple of million? This guys still class!! With a point to prove!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Great to see him in a saints shirt

Would love it

We should go for Lacina Traore, looks like he could be a class player in the future and has a good goal scoring record in Russia, I think he could be good here, I think he has the potential to be better than Obsvaldo, thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

16 Aug 2013 09:50:00
Can't see Osvaldo joining us. He will sign for Spurs as he want to go to London unless Nicola can persuade him that Saints are the club to join. Time is running out to get more signings.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Actually he is most likely to move to Inter still it seems.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2013 09:42:34
Those saying Osvaldo doesn't want to move to Saints are being slightly misled. At no point has Osvaldo said he doesn't want to move to Saints. It merely appears that his preference was to stay in Italy as he feels this would be most beneficial to his World Cup aspirations. That's an entirely reasonable and respectable aspiration.

I for one am pumped at the thought of this move going through. He's class, and will push us from a 10th - 12th place finish up to a comfortable 8th place in my opinion. Given his desire to feature in the World Cup, he can't afford to play up this year of all years.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I honestly thought I had read that he said he didn't want to come to us.

I don't think he will. let's face it, most people would join Spurs given a choice. Well known, consistently top half, have some world class players.
We are still an unknown in the EPL this time around.
We also need to be able to get the balls to him and at the moment we are short of a decent attacking midfield. I'm still unsure whether Gaston is the man for this. Has moments of brilliance surrounded by a lot of inconsistency. Even in pre season.
If we had a decent AM and a decent striker to work with Ricky (let's face it he was an unknown last season. Every team is going to know he is our main. almost only threat and will crowd him off the pitch). I believe we could challenge mid table. as long as the defence wakes up.

With what we have, I think too many fans are being too optimistic. I'm still unsure about our new defender. Has had a very poor couple of seasons.

Osvaldo is being reported as signing for spurs today or tomorrow put the times says he's signing for saints I would say he will go to spurs until southampton finish in the top six or start paying bigger wages they will miss out on players like this.

Osvaldo to sign for spurs for £15m - looks like we missed out on another! Defoe?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lambert > Defoe, if we want to sign a new striker, we need younger and better, not older and increasingly falling away from the top spots in the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think you will find we have agreed a deal are spurs are only momitoring the situation

Agree0 Disagree0

There welcome to him!
Think he's going to be trouble?

Agree0 Disagree0

Older and falling away?. defoe is 2 years younger and is still quality. Still banging in goals last season when he was struggling with injuries and bale was refusing to pass him the ball!
