Arsenal fan here.

How did you end up signing Ramirez? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he joined you instead of the Scousers and the Spuds. But it just seems unusual.

Anyway, good luck for next season and I can't wait to see the likes of Lallana and Ramirez in action.

Ted

To be honest mate we are as surprised as you that it actually seems to be happening!

I think the lad was keen to come to an English club. Liverpool and Spurs would have been a preference but liverpool didn't make a bid as the price was too much and Spurs weren't prepared to pay the wages he was after.

Saints have lots of money (around 5th richest club in the UK in terms of owners), have lots of ambition (plan is to challenge for Europe either this season or the next couple of seasons), a young up and coming team, great facilities, great academy, sell out stadium etc. so as an alternative English club that isn't a 'big club' I suppose we are a relatively attractive option.

However, we tend to have a very shrewd chief exec (Nicola Cortese - who has ties with lots of Italian clubs which could explain why we have done so well for ourselves) who doesn't splash cash very readily, so I don't really know why we are being so frivolous all of a sudden. It could be that in our last friendly we lost 4-0 and that served as a bit of a wake up call. Most likely our chairman sees it as a good bit of business regardless of the salary Ramirez will be on... hopefully we can buy him for £12million now and sell him on for £20million to a 'big club' after a couple successful seasons in the prem.

Having said all that... deal isn't done yet. We had a similar situation with Alexander Buttner from Vitesse (player excited about the club and apparently deal done) which fell through and whilst I hope the Ramirez transfer goes through, I think I speak for us all when I say that I'm preparing for the worst... just in case!

Agree2 Disagree0

Hey, We managed to show him around the club and he really liked our clubs ambition as southampton in the future (2/3 years) want to be challenging for europe places. Also we will give him a decent sum of money. That being said though the deal is not 100% finished.

Agree2 Disagree0

I know we have just come up from the championship but our club has good financial backing so why shouldnt we sign big money players. We are a club that wants to achieve big things in the premier league and we need to bring in good quality players for the future.

Agree2 Disagree0

Because people like you underestimate saints and forget we are 5th richest team in England, we have a great set up ambitios chairman and avery under rated manager

Look like your have to buy your star players elsewhere now

Agree1 Disagree0

We haven't got him yet, looks like you did well to pull out of it, it smells of greed and corruption.

Agree0 Disagree1

Its not done yet Ted but its possible because we have Nicola Cortese doing the talking with the Liebherr family money to back up his words. If they say No or even just hesitate, he shows them The Godfather trilogy.

does anyone else worry for southamption. Defenders are what they need. There opening run in is tough and they could easily be left playing catchup with the rest of the league like bolton were last year. Im not hating on southamption just worried for them

Believable7 Unbelievable2

Not worried i'm sure we will get in one or 2 cb 's before transfer window shuts

No. 10 and No. 3 not been assigned to anyone, Ramirez and Buttner numbers possibly?

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Should be, just need to wait for them both to go through haha. Or 3 could be for a new CB perhaps.

Agree2 Disagree0

Hopefullybut if fox was gonna become the first choice left back he'd become number 3 unless he wanted to keep 13

Agree0 Disagree0

Adkins said in the press conference that he has two good left backs in fox and shaw, and said that buttner was not happening. Hinted he would be giving shaw some game time as he talked a lot about letting the younger players get game time.

The Ramirez deal may have taken a twist as most have heard by about now, but still think its going to go through and a value will be settled. Just a shame it's hit the press as we know Cortese doesn't like this situation but he is a statement of intent and one the club will not want to back away from at this stage. Keep watching COYR!!

Just heard on the radio that Ramirez will be signing for £11.8million. The reporter was at St Mary's after talking to NA, but has said that an official announcement has yet to be done.
Good signing IMHO!

Fantastic that Ramirez is on his way. also read in the sun today that we are back in for Buttner. i heard that if he wasn't moving to us he wouldn't be moving at all but i don't know if thats true. also remember reading a few comments the other day of people doubting adkins and cortese with transfers. do you feel a bit silly now? fantastic as usual from them both

Believable4 Unbelievable1

I never doubted Adkins but as fantastic as these signings will be IF they are confirmed we still wouldn't have signed the position we need strengthening most...... CENTER BACK!

We survived in the Premier League for a long time with person chairmen that sold our best players. I am thankful for the St Mary's stadium and the youth development. But every time we took a step forward, we took one back.

Now we have much to be thankful for with the Leibherr family, Corteze and Adkins all being true to their words and delivering success and really exciting signings.

The stadium will grow, the squad is young and exciting. We have many years of happiness ahead.

The skates are dead, the saints are stronger than ever. Now seriously, what can any real saints fan have to moan about?

Up the Saints!!!!

Believable7 Unbelievable0

Well said mate,at least someone is taking sense, unlike the ones moaning about transfers

Agree2 Disagree0

Not moaning - but keep your feet on the ground!

We have come along way, but we still have a long way to go to get where we deserve to be.

JJ

Agree0 Disagree0

Deserve to be? We are where we deserve to be, fighting in the Premier League. But we need to sign players to progress and only then we may 'deserve' to be higher.

All hail Don Corteze.

So we have signed Gaston ramirez a player chased by Inter Milan, Liverpool and totte ham. Not such a small club now are we. This season we are going to prove a few of the doubters wrong includeing stupid savage who had us down for relegation with villa and reading.
So after weeks of torment and thoughts of possible trouble i have been swayed, cortese is a GOD!

SO. It looks like we have signed Ramirez then?! Wow. 11.8 mil apparently. I remember seeing him a bit in the Olympics and from what I have just seen on youtube im pretty impressed. If he plays on the right him and Clyne are going to cause some big problems in the prem! JUST NEED A CENTRE BACK NOW PLEASE.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

He not a winger. He is a traditional number 10.

Agree1 Disagree0

Think you will find he plays no 10 for uraguay at the 0lympics but is not a traditional no. 10, like lallana he plays wing and like to cut in and float which hints at adkins playing 2 upfront with an interchangable 3 in behind of possible lallana davis ramirez the a defensive mid holding in front of the CB. team look abit like this.

Davis
Clyne New CB Hooiveld Fox/Buttner
Schniederlin
Ramirez Davis Lallana
Lambert Rodriguez

Jas93

Agree0 Disagree2

He is definitely a winger.

Agree0 Disagree0

May work against Wigan but can't see us playing too many games with 2 strikers

Agree0 Disagree0

I think that will be the line up until Cork comes back from his injury though.

We have shocked the soccer world with the capture of Ramirez, non saints fans cant believe it! they are sucking on sour grapes. We have show real ambition with this signing! showing the big boys we can attract top talent and dig deep if needed into the money pockets. We are back in for Buttner, I bet he's beggin to get in this exciting Saints team. If M Phillips comes aboard, our ship will sail with one of the most exciting, attacking, young talents to hit the premier league in a long time! c'mon Lens, get on board! NOW what about that central defense, NA/NC are known to keep things close to their chest, but this is ridiculous! No tabloids can sniff even the hint of a rumour. I know they have someting up their sleeve, and with all the exciting talent they have brought so far, I am sure we will not be disappointed. Could our CB buy be even bigger than the Ramirez deal. One can only hope! What an exciting team this is shaping up to be!

Believable3 Unbelievable1

If we get Phillips and Ramirez there is no point in getting Lens I'm sorry but he wouldn't be much of an addition at that point. I hope we'll see a Centre back sign soon though cause we do need another one.

Ramirez all but done. Cant believe it. that shows real intention. Sky sports are reporting it, believed to be over 12 million with ramirez being very happy with the deal hes been offered. Also phillips may be closer to being finalized as per paper reports, and the papers are also reporting buttner deal maybe back on, its a foreign paper ill post the name when I find it again. now some centre backs please. Exciting times.

Ky Sports understands Southampton have agreed a club record deal with Bologna for Uruguay international Gaston Ramirez.

The 21-year-old had been approached by Tottenham, Liverpool and Inter Milan earlier this summer.

But now newly-promoted Southampton are on the verge of a huge coup by landing the midfielder, who has just had an excellent Olympic campaign for Uruguay.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins was looking for a big name attacking midfielder and had failed with a bid for PSV Eindhoven's Dutch international Jeremain Lens, but he switched his attentions to Ramirez and looks to have got his man.

Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has brokered the deal, which is believed to be worth €15million (£11.8million).

Ramirez has confirmed he is ready to fly to England to conclude a move to St Mary's.

Agreement

"Bologna will tell me on Friday if I can move," he told the Corriere dello Sport.

"The truth is that I think, yes, this time I am moving. Bologna has reached an agreement with Southampton, and there are only a few details to be found but the agreement in principle is done."

Ramirez admits that Southampton have offered him very good terms, and he is happy to become a key player for them.

"The English club has reached an agreement with me, it is the classic offer that you cannot refuse for my life as a whole and my family.

"But they believe in me in every way, I will be essential and above all they are going to grow. Southampton is a newly promoted team in the English top-flight but they will become a big team in years to come.

"They have told me they are going to build and that is very stimulating."

For only 11 million. That is the best buy of the summer by a million miles.

It is so annoying the news broke on the same day as Van Persie to Man U cause otherwise so much more coverage would've been shown on SkySports news.

Sky Sports reporting Bologna accept 11.8M bid from Saints for Gaston Ramirez.... Crazy money! That safely shows the wage structure is blown. We desperately need defenders..

Believable2 Unbelievable1

He's worth more than that. I'm not sure how highly paid he will be I doubt he'll be the highest paid by too much. {Ed001's Note - his salary is not that high, the deal involves huge bonus payments, ie win bonuses and goal bonuses and appearance money. That way it doesn't have the other players come in asking for a pay rise as he is on so much more.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Why does it affect the wage structure, sign-on fees can cover that and housing etc. Besides we're in the Prem again and we need to move forward! Stop being so friggin negative! I'm sick of hearing fellow Saints 'fans' doubting and moaning all the time!!

According to lots of reports on twitter this evening , the Gaston Ramirez seems to be getting closer , alot of people are saying £20million, which i think is way too much, seeing as spurs had a bid of £12.6mill accepted a few weeks ago.
other reports say he wants £80k p/w, which i think is too high, and surely someone who wants to keep playing at the top level with want a relegation release clause in his contract (hope went dont go down) , also will he want a big club release clause ? only time will tell - chris

Believable1 Unbelievable1

That transfer fee might include his wages

Agree0 Disagree0

Saints will not sign ramirez, get this in your heads!

Agree0 Disagree0

It's a 11.8 million and you lot should be doing back flips.

Agree1 Disagree0

11.8 million bid accepted (sky sports news)

and apparently he's on 30k a week. Brilliant signing, I was so excited when I heard.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gaston is flying into Southampton tonight for a medical, as reported on SSN. Get that in your head!

Agree1 Disagree0

Bids been accepted, 30k wages. sorted. plus our chairman is a Swiss banker, i'd assume he knows what he's doing.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's a 30k per week contract but it includes bonus' so that will mean the better he plays he could see that become 40k in some weeks which is a great incentive as well.
