Loving the general upbeat nature of most posts. Let's cheer the boys on and show a largely negative media what we all know - There is something special about the Saints!

Couldn't agree more

I believe the squad will be going full throttle tonight to get three points, as they will see this as the most appropriate way to mark Nigels exit and show respect for what he achieved.
Just hope there are no mindless persons at St. Marys who think it might be clever to make their views known to the cameras-it would be disrespectful to the players and to Nigel.

I like every other fan was disappointed by Nigel being sacked, but lets give Mauricio a chance and see what he can do. Lets not make a hostile atmosphere so it affects him and the team. Lets get behind the new man and the team! COYRs!

Coutinho in talks with Liverpool.

Source: tv

Believable1 Unbelievable0

You mean Liverpool are in talks with Inter regarding the purchase of Coutinho. They haven't had a bid accepted yet.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry, that's what I meant :)

Agree0 Disagree0

You do realise it normally helps to tell us what channel or programme you hear it on? {Ed001's Note - it is probable that they did but our filter removed it. We have issues with sky, especially skybet, with them keep trying to put up posts advertising their products. We ended up just removing all mention of their name through the filter to stop it. As it is obvious a multi-billion pound company like them couldn't afford to pay us for the ads, apparently.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I did :L

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah thanks for the heads up on that one Ed. What a bunch of cheap, well not sure I have a word to do them justice really. Then again doesn't sound any worse than most corporations... Shamefully.

The best starting 11 assuming we sign no more players which I think we will anyway. Honestly feel that this starting 11 is a side worthy of the places between 8-12th.
Boruc-Clyne, Fonte, Forren, Shaw-Schneiderlin, Cork-Puncheon, Ramirez, Lallana-Lambert

Especially if we bring in perhaps Butland, Countinho, Astori, Nem, Verdu.

Then we will be flying.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

Davis clyne, fonte, forren, shaw punch, spidy, cork, lallana remrez, j.rod that's how I think the new manager will play it using lambert as a super sub opting for two quicker fowards

Agree0 Disagree7

How many times does Kelvin have to demonstrate that he's not up to it?

Agree4 Disagree0

Davis?! LOL. Boruc has been fantastic in recent games and you want good old sloppy Davis back in goal? You must be mad.

Agree3 Disagree1

Boruc hasn't been that fantastic!

Agree1 Disagree4

Personally I think we need a new full time number 1

Agree3 Disagree2

I think Gazzaniga deserves a proper chance again. He was great except the 2 errors which I doubt he'd do again and both other keepers have had mistakes.

Agree0 Disagree7

We're down 6 points from where we could be thanks to goalie errors.

All part of the game, but still VERY annoying even so

Agree2 Disagree0

I'll think you'll find its 8 points at least

Agree1 Disagree0

I am not convinced with Boruc, his last game I think was still shaky against Chelsea, that second goal he reacted by jumping in the middle of goal when the ball hit the right top corner then when the Hazard hit the rebound he was still getting off the floor.....

Agree1 Disagree2

I take it back boruc was very good tonight

I saw a good point in an article earlier, Adkins signed a 3 year deal when he came to us and as far as I know he didn't sign an extension. So he would of been out of contract by the end of the summer. Surprised the media didn't catch on to this as most clubs wouldn't have a manager of his ability with such a short amount of time left to run on his contract. Eg Rodgers, Lambert managers with huge potential and ability left to different clubs but substantial compensation had to be paid as they had signed new contracts. If I had known this I wouldn't of been as surprised by the news on Friday. Cortese has clearly wanted a new man in from the moment we got promoted or at least since the Arsenal 5-1 defeat. I feel it has to do with attracting cheaper foreign players from Spain more than anything, like Swansea have done. This decision will either make or break us. Lets hope for a long successful era under this new guy and we keep performing as we have been the last month or so.
COYS

Believable3 Unbelievable0

The Arsenal defeat was 6-1... Not that that's a correction I really want to make :/

Agree3 Disagree0

He had signed an extension, he was contracted until 2016.

Agree0 Disagree2

After more research I have found out he signed a 4 year deal in may 2011 after we came up from league 1 so he was contracted to 2015.

Whats annoyed me now is Nigel's Quote at the end of the article. "By signing this long-term contract, it allows the club to have a great deal of stability which is vitally important for us to be able to achieve our goals in both the short and long-term future"

I really hope this does turn out to be a good decision but I am skeptical to say the least.

I really hope Cortese hasn't turned into Flavio Briatore and those lot at QPR in that film the 4 year plan which is essentially 'sack a manager once or twice every year and eventually we'll go up' obviously that is a joke

Ahh well at least Nigel got a nice pay off. I hope he has nice holiday and then goes on to manage a top club. I also would love to meet him, shake his hand and thank him for what he has done the past two seasons

Just want to say I'm actully quite excited about the new era we are about to enter.

If you only look at the stats about the new Gaffer, his win ratio of 49 out of 140 odd would give us 12 wins a year on average over the last 4 - so taken with the likely draws, I reckon we can expect to do good.

Yes, there is still the risk of relegation although yesterday's results helped a lot but you just know the lads are going to play their hearts out to avoid this.

What will dissappoint is to see Jason or Rickie or Maya or whoever once again standing still, ball at their feet, looking around wondering what to do next for lack of a tactical idea - seen that a few times too many this year.

Tomorrow is just the start. Realistically, we shouldn't expect huge changes immediately and considering Everton are 6th, a loss to them would not be unexpected - but I do want to see us play well, competently, as a team and with a plan. That would be a good portent.

Block34

Believable6 Unbelievable3

I think that we will be helped by Cortese's decision to give all backroom staff a contract with Southampton to ensure continuity. Previously if a manager went all backroom staff went too, this meant lots of upheaval, players wanting to go because their particular coach had left and the club losing millions in compensation payments etc. I am upset with what has happened and the way in which it has happened but believe the Chairman has the Club's best interests at heart . The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so let's just wait and see and continue giving our boys the great support we have been giving them all season. I know Nigel would not like to seethe team suffer because fans are angry with Cortese.Let's be honest in the premier league, Nigel's stats are almost exactly the same as twitcher Redknapp's - look what he did to us! Block34 : I, too, am excited whilst being a bit nervous about the timing. I would rather be relegated going for glory than spend another 27 years in the top flight doing a 'Wigan'. Rosie's son may have found that exciting but i'm normal and didn't!
Rosie : I agree with you so have a word with your son, will ya? He used to let his feet do the talking and they undoubtedly saved us from relegation numerous times. What's coming out of his mouth at the moment though ain't doing us any favours!

Tomorrows game is vital. 3 points would make a big step away from the relegation area, and once that is achieved I believe we will see the confidence flood into this team and we will rapidly climb the table.

I have great respect for Nigel as a person and a manager, but don't automatically assume this was a dumb decision by Cortese. I thought the same about Pardew until the reason for his departure became clear. Now, that will not be the reason for Nigel going but equally I could understand there could be a reason none of us are aware of. Just for the sake of an example, and no basis in fact for it, it has been rumoured Cortese was looking to bring in an additional backer to the Leibherr family. Such a move in itself could force a change of manager (not the sort of thing we like to see in football, but it happens.)
Quite simply, lets ignore the ill informed who are now trying to get a hate Cortese campaign going, and concentrate on suporting the team. Tomorrows game could be really pivitol to our season and it would be great to make the papers rewrite the stories they have already drafted!

Ok so adkins is gone, I don't think any amount of protest will get him back. We're not going to become like Chelsea and be corteses' play toy. He did this with as he said our club in mind any way he may have found the prefect manager, I was looking into him and found this : he developed a reputation as a forward-thinking and thoroughly modern coach. His teams played fast-paced football with an emphasis on pressing and ball retention, developing possession from defence, and Pochettino's methods soon attracted interest from a number of clubs around Europe. One notable aspect of Pochettino's time at Espanyol was his ability to work with young players and integrate them into the first team.
More than 20 academy graduates were introduced into senior football under him and, considering Southampton's strong track record in developing youth talent, that's surely one of the qualities that attracted them to Pochettino.

He may not be that bad and if cortese Wants champions league football in 2-3 years I'm not sure if Adkins. Was good enough. He made too many mistakes that at that level will be punished.

Believable10 Unbelievable2

Disagree - how much experience does this bloke have of managing Europa or Champions League?

Adkins could have learnt (as he has been doing along with the rest of the team this season). How does someone get experience if they are not allowed to get experience?

I agree there is sod all we can do about Adkins but we can continue our passionate support as we have always done.

I do remember how I felt when Pardew was sacked and replaced by an unknown....similar to now funnily enough. I also know how I felt under Adkins by the end of the 1st season. I, for one, will get behind the team as best I can whilst on Operations. Only the end of the season will tell if this is the right decision.

Good Luck for the Future Nigel and I thank you and wish you well.

Good Luck for avoiding relegation this season Mr new manager who I can't spell yet...and welcome to the most passionate bunch of fans going....

The Saints first team are heading to Barcelona on a 'team bonding' trip following the Everton game. I would expect that if we are to see new signings that they will come from there. More than likely, with Espanyol struggling financially, that it will be one of Pochettino's old players. However, with te amount of emphasis Pochettino has put on the U-21s and youth at Saints in all his interviews, I wouldn't expect to see a flurry of new signings...maybe just one or two.

I'm content though. We got a CB which is what we needed all along.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

I am not sure I want to see Espanyol players turning out in a saints shirt though. Many of them probably aren't good enough. I wouldn't mind Coutinho who has worked with him before though.

Agree4 Disagree0

I'm not sure either which is why I also don't know if any are good enough. Pochettino would know, however, if there was a Luke Shaw amongst their ranks. Y'know, that future England left back who is playing for a struggling EPL side and is unheard of amongst 99.9% of Spanish football fans.

Anyone saying Ramirez might leave this transfer window has no concept of how player registration works. It's practically irrelevant if player plays for three clubs, rather just that they were registered for three clubs. Ramirez this year was registered at Bologna and Southampton. If he were to move he could not register for the club and hence couldn't play any games until next season. For this transfer window at least, Ramirez isn't going anywhere.

- Taber

Believable2 Unbelievable0

In addition to that, the new manager is South American and speaks Spanish (worryingly that is all he speaks) so as far as Ramirez is concerned the lines of communication have improved no end. With the possibility of more Spanish speaking players coming in with connections to Pochettino I would imagine this will help him settle in nicely...... Still miss Nige though

Agree3 Disagree0

The new boss has a basic understanding of English but is nothing like as confident with it as he is with Spanish. He does have a very good understanding seeing as he's only been learning English for a few weeks. I think in a month or two he will be handling press conferences in English.

Hi, i'm actually a wolves fan and very shocked to see NA sacked! Southampton was a team very much on the up, and doing well I thought this season but very sadden to see NA sacked! He done amazing tbh at Southampton having successive promotions and doing well in the premier league! I think he is a great manager and would have loved to see him at molineux!! I seen your games live against fulham, aston villa and chelsea lately and you looked like a team with confidence.....I assume all saints fans are angered and I feel sor for you!! I hope you don't end up like my club.....anyone know the reason of the sacking?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

The reason is Cortese didn't have confidence that he could take Southampton into Europe.

Agree4 Disagree0

Apparently arguments over transfer dealings

Agree1 Disagree2

The only people who are truly able to answer your question ain't telling, yet. What we do know is that Cortese is extremely ambitious and the first response above is probably correct, well, more accurate than the 2nd response, anyway.

Sad to see Adkins go but Cortese is the man who saved our club. It was he who convince ML to buy us. He loves this club and has the best interest of the club at heart. Bad timing ? Possibly. I think we'll be ok and have many years of success. Here is a statement from ML about cortese,,,,, Nicola has been pivotal in conceiving the purchase of the Club and making it happen. I am now delighted to entrust him with overseeing the Club's progress, development and achievement of success over the long term. Nicola and I have enjoyed a long business relationship and it was Nicola who convinced me about buying the Club. He then conducted what proved to be a very difficult process very expertly and professionally. Ultimately, it happened because Nicola was at all times focused on strong business and ethical principles. Since our early conversations about the deal I made it clear that I would only buy the Club if he remained involved following the purchase. I am therefore very happy that he has accepted the role as Executive Chairman.[2]

Believable3 Unbelievable0

He is driven, no doubt. But he's driven more by ruthless pride and certainly not Love.

Agree2 Disagree1

I don't bloody care if it's pride, love or psychopathic tendencies! He saved our club. That's fact not opinion. I defended NA more than most on this site 'cos he WAS a Saint but if NC didn't think he was good enough then that's fine by me. Can't help wondering what the reaction would have been if NA had left 'cos Liverpool came calling.
