Do not be surprised if you see Southampton, or any EPL club, sign one of Sporting CPs numerous youth stars at the moment. Ilori, Rojo, Carrillo, Andre Martins, Bruma, Labyad, Rubio, Viola, Dier, Esgaio, Zezinho, Capel, Cedric, Joao Mario, Betinho, Arias.

We'll take Ilori please.

Sorry but Bruma is the one to take. Can't see Saints signing any of these though

Saw lower down someone talking about Marian Pahars and tried to think of a few players in his mould who would be good AND realistic targets for Saints. I came up with six:

Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli)
Bernard (Mineiro)
Filip Duricic (Heerenveen)
Iker Muniain (Bilbao)
Zakaria Labyad (Sporting CP)
Juan Fernando Quintero (Pescara)

What do you guys think? Who would you like to see Saints sign as the next Marian Pahars?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Muniain is world class.

All good players to be fair, couldn't really complain if we signed any of them.

Lamela rumour is doing the rounds at the minute. He's a player of that ilk.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sweet topic. Haha, remember Pahars goal against United? What a guy.

But yes, I think of that set Quintero would be the most likely to sign for us; Recently relegated, in Italy where Cortese likes doing business and can play more or less anywhere in the forward position. Though the player I think would be the best signing would be Insigne.

Although I'd want Bernard just for the fact we'd have a 5'4 player lining up next to Lambert!

Worth noting that it would probably be difficult to get work permits for those due to lack of national football.

I don't know all the intricate rulings but I'm sure one of the Ed's knows. {Ed001's Note - if they don't hold passports from a country within the EU (which is unusual as they normally scam a grandmother etc when playing in Italy to get one), then they need to get a work permit. To get one:
(1) they must have played for their country in at least 75% of its competitive A team matches in the two years preceding the application (for which they were available, so games missed due to injury are not an issue); and

(2) the player’s country must be at or above 70th place in the official FIFA world rankings.
If they do not qualify through that, then the club needs to apply on the grounds of the player being an exceptional talent, which can be complicated.}

You mean the Munian that was offered around last summer for around €40M?

Agree0 Disagree0

"You mean the Munian that was offered around last summer for around €40M?"

If he was offered for 40M euros then that means no one took the offer as it was over priced significantly.

Using some rough estimates. Realistically he's worth no more than 30 million Euros. Which is approx £20million. £20million isn't extortionate considering TV revenues alone will get us £80million per year. Plus sponsorship, shirt sales, ticket sales etc. £20million for a rich club is a drop in the ocean.

Agree0 Disagree0

Unfortunately, more like £25M at current rates.

But would it be wise spending that much on one player when we have a need for a number of skillsets?

Arguably, money spent diversely on 2/3/4 select players is likely to have a better overall impact.

Agree0 Disagree0

£80m? more like £60m

Andy Carroll out of the England squad because of injury. Rickie Lambert?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don't be silly, Woy doesn't know that English players exist outside of the top 6.

Agree0 Disagree0

Andy carroll doesn't play for a club in the top 6

Agree0 Disagree0

Hate to break it to you but West Ham (carroll) are 10th so that kind of ruins your point about top 6.

Agree0 Disagree0

But at moment carroll is a liverpool player who are in top 10

Agree0 Disagree0

Lambert won't be playing for England because it's not good for him. He is actually better off playing for club not country. I'm not sure he could handle the extra game load. Not to doubt his abilities because he's an excellent striker. But it's a lot to ask of someone who has only just this season gained an appreciation for the standard of the Premier league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lamberts not good enough for England

Agree0 Disagree0

He is. If he dosen't go to Brazil 2014 I can garentee you England will have no chance of winning the world cup! {Ed007's Note - I'll guarantee you that no matter who goes to Brazil, England have no chance of winning the WC.}

Southampton made around £43 million from TV deals this year and next year with the new TV deals they are expected to make upwards of £60 million, a 50% improvement. Combined with upwards of £6 million from place prize money this year indicates that Saints are even financially even better off then before - and we were doing pretty well anyway.

With the Spanish season coming to a close, of the likely relegated clubs I wouldn't mind any of this lot: Hugo Mallo (RB), Alvaro (CB), Dos Santos (LW), Nelson Oliveira (CF), Pizzi (LW) or Iago Aspas (CF).
The amount of good players who have likely/gotten relegated in Spain, Italy and Germany is ridiculous. Someone lower down talked about Palermo and there's another pool of resources.
Anybody else who's recently been relegated from a club that anyone reckon could be a good quality signing for the Saints?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think Oliveira and Pizzi are on loan. But true enough. Firmino from Hoffenheim if they get relegated would be a good shout, or Dybala, Ilicic and Munoz from Palermo. Quintero and Weiss at Pescara. There really is a lot of good players who have gotten relegated. Dos Santos would be a bit of a risk though, he's hot and cold.
