With Cortese coming out and back Rodriguez to be our top scorer (see Daily Fail article) do you think it's likely we will go on and sign a big name striker like Damiao? Seems a bit pointless to publicly back a current striker to be top scorer, to then go on and spend a record sum on a big name such as Damiao.

Just find it a bit odd with all the rumours about Damiao re-surfacing now.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Strikerwise I hope we don't end up regretting not taking a punt on Hooper. He was cheap money and cheap wages and fitted age wise. Yes he might not make it in the Prem but hey. didn't everyone say that about RL!

Agree0 Disagree0

Think you will find most EPL sides would be looking to be able to rotate between 4 strikers. Saints are not near to that situation yet and IMO will want to add one quality player in this position-especially with RL perhaps needing to be managed carefully to extend his career.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Made up quote, they've twisted his words an awful lot there. Rodriguez could easily be our top scorer if we did get Damiao though because Damiao is great at pulling defenders from another attacker. Plus rotation is a key factor in strikers.

Agree0 Disagree0

It was a quote of Cortese jestfully talking to J. Rod. He said, 'I've got my money on you being top goalscorer next season. ' Inspiring confidence and showing support for a player that will find himself being rotated. I'll be very surprised if he out-scores Rickie, let alone a super signing. Hope he improves and does go on to be prolific, but for me, he is lacking a little class. He seems to have all the attributes but just doesn't get it all together too often.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jay Rod will be a BIG star before long. Difficult for a young striker in his first year in the Premiership, when the team was taking time to manage the challenge.

Still very young and certainly a confidence player. I see him having a big season this time round-certainly noted as one for the future by many of our competition.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

He' not 18. The old 'One for the future' label only carries so far.

So Nicola has been all over TV this morning, and members of the national press are spending the day at Saints training camp. Once again Nicola has laid out his plans for Southampton.

It has been confirmed that Saints are after ONE more player this window, and that player is a striker.

So to all the 'we need a LB/RB Winger/CAM/Striker brigade, you're all going to be disappointed.

Secondly, Saints have confirmed that they are prepared to start the season without a Striker, should they not be able to sign the 'right' player, and won't be pushed into panic buying, or spending money that Nicola feels isn't justified. In other words we're happy to pay big money for a player, but won't allow agents to take a big slice, or the players club to over-hype the price.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agreed St Christopher but I bet it doesn't stop posts by the disappointed.

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope if we don't get a striker sharp will be put in the squad, poor lad deserves a chance even if its back up, It probably won't happen as he hasn't been at pre-season which is strange as if Jay and Lambert both get injured at the same time which could possibly happen. We have Mayuka and that's it!

Saint IQ

Agree0 Disagree0

Good news, we need a striker much more than any other position. I mean our defence has very good players and has decent, young cover. Our midfield is now incredible and in goal Boruc can do a job. Ricky just needs the pressure off. Plus we don't score enough of our chances.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rumours are he's already signed Banega so only has one left to achieve. If true Banega would be revealed tonight or tomorrow night. Fingers crossed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Last I heard regarding Banega is that the new Valencia manager wanted to build his team around Banega.

This would effectively put an end to the Banega sale, unless we paid over the odds to get him. Cortese won't do that.

Agree0 Disagree0

I feel NC is determined to bring in a real quality forward and, subject to the standard market difficulties, this will happen (Remember, all the EPL is looking to do the same. )

Equally, I have a gut feeling there is a surprise for all of us round the corner, and I suspect this may be additional to a forward.

Saint Martin

Agree0 Disagree0

Fairly sure Banega isn't going to happen anymore. Seemed he would have been an alternative to Wanyama (yes, I know they play slightly different positions).

Damiao apparently back on the cards but still has a way to go.

Other than that there is very little coming out of St Mary's. Sneaky transfer dealings, or lack of activity. Up to you to decide, but no one truly knows.

Agree0 Disagree0

Alternative to wanyama? mp stated he wanted both

Agree0 Disagree0

Well if that's the case then expect us to struggle in lower half of the league as we def need a striker ASAP and need a left wing of real quality.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we must convert mayuka to a lw as he can also then cut in and not bad weak foot, blinding pace and I think he just needs one goal then he won't stop

Agree0 Disagree0

He never stated "he wanted both". He said there was interest in both. Monitoring two players does NOT mean you want to buy them both, just that you might buy them.

Agree0 Disagree0

Banega has said he is happy at valencia and was captain in a friendly the other night so don't see that happening

Agree0 Disagree0

Y would he say both there names if he didn't want both there 2 totally different types of midfielders wanyama would be cdm and banega further forward similar to were davis plays and interest in players generally means u want them don't it?

Thought i'd say this about the saints team if we get Damiao.

WE have a good team and we will play 4, 2, 3, 1 this season with a really strong squad going on the pitch.

Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, Lovren, Shaw, Wanyama, Schniederlin, Gaston, Lallana, Jay Rod, Damiao

This squad, who knows what it is capable of?

We may not get Damiao but I have a feeling this is a typical signing by NC playing things out until he gets what he wants.

I am worried about this season but not because I think we go down. because teams around us like Norwich are strengthening and they look stronger. we look stong now maybe just as strong as any team but we need this signing in order to make people think twice about us.

The times are looking up for saints, and lads seriously this is a family club always has been but just because we look like getting success don't let it go to your heads, Remember where we have come from and remember that we could of lost our club a few years back now we are back stronger than ever and that means the best support we can give the team.

Just under three weeks until the first game, getting close to the season in which we will find out what our squads made off. we had a list of five players at the start of the window. Lovren, Astori, Wanyama, Damiao, Banega. we got two make a it three and i'm sure we will have a very good season and finish above 10th, and with a good cup run?

Who knows but let's get behind the team and show them why they play for us! and we owe West Brom let's give them a game. COYR'S

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lallana has done nothing to justify his place in that squad compared to Cork/Davis/Puncheon/Lambert.

I love the lad to bits, but he had a poor season last time and hasn't been anything special pre-season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe because he was injured last season and also because he is not a left winger and should play as CAM.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lallana has played on the left more times than other positions since we got relegated
having a joke can't play on the wing
ok then

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree lallana was quality in the championship in which he would cut in and curl them into the bottom far corner. Last year he would beat the player then have the opportunity to shoot. But for some reason he would pass the buck 90% of the time. Spose you could put it down to confidence. hope he finds that bit of confidence this year to start taking the chances cause we all know he's a quality player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with you confidence is a big factor

Leandro rumours seem to be picking up heavily now. Damaio seems like a great player, I hope he brings that extra bit of class we need up front. I do believe though he has a point to prove this season with him wanting to play for brazil and with fred playing well up front he has to stack a claim and prove himself this season so, with his intensions clear I think his would be a great signing

I don't understand some fans, people talk about Sharp and Lee as though they are sensational.

Lee had 6 or 7 games for us, all of which he was average, despite the wonder goal he scored. He was too weak physically for the championship, not particularly quick and constantly looked out of his depth and then add in the injury problems.

Sharp is a fox in the box, nothing more. In the Premiership you need players with a bit more to their game. Granted he could be used as a super sub when chasing games, but personally I would rather have a more complete striker.

From the limited game time I have seen of Mayuka, he looks as though he could be usefull if used in the right areas but again as a sub.

People saying we will be relegated if we don't buy a super striker are also wrong, we can easily achieve a mid table finish without spending the 20 mill needed to get the targets listed in the media. Jay Rodriguez and Rickie have enough firepower in them. Whilst it would be nice to have another striker to take the pressure off Rickie, its not life or death!

Loveren and Wanyama were exceptional signings, adding strength, depth and champions league experience to our squad. Wanyama will allow so much squad depth due to his and Corks versatility.

Early indications suggest that MoPo believes the likes of Isgrove and Chambers are good enough to make the step up the first team squad adding further cover.

Just remember we don't have infinate ammounts of money, and if this is it for our spending we will be absolutely fine. Trust in Cortese and MoPo to keep the club moving forward, they have done a pretty sensational job so far.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Isgrove has looked quality in pre season so far

Agree0 Disagree0

Lee was absolutely brilliant for us, yes he wasn't strong enough for the championship but he didn't need to be in my view we bought him for last year. As far as his injuries go its no ones fault it just didn't work out, and what you said doesn't makes sence, he was terrible on 6-7 occasions the other one he scored a wonder goal. The 6-7 occasions he was brought on off of the bench and played really well it just didn't happen. And he has absolutely blistering pace he's was probably as quick as the ox.

Completely agree with sharp though he's just not good enough, didn't know where the goals came from he didn't seem dangerous or very good.

We don't want a mid table finish which is why saints are spending big we want more. We are sticking to the 5 year plan. If we are going to do better in years to come we need a striker better than lambert and to take pressure off of him. Lambert isn't fast enough for champions league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lambert isit fast enuff for champs league lol Gomez shermingham and pirlo have bags of pace don't they lol all won it I belive lambert could quiet simply do a job at any level of football you don't need pace the way he plays the game

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree we will need a better striker than Lambert or even another option, but what I was saying was there is no need to panic, as many fans are, if we don't sign a striker in this window. We have already spent the best part of 20mill and nobody except Cortese knows how much we have to spend.

I have to disagree about Lee though, I don't think he ever really showed or gave anything to the team, whilst we were in the championship, and he was no where near as quick as the ox! Granted as I said he was unlucky with injuries. Sharp is a poacher and he did what we needed him to do, but that is all he can do, and won't fit into our system

Agree0 Disagree0

Thank you for someone else saying this! Btw the elbow injury was definitely Lee's fault but I all for injuries picked up from karate chopping ice while on internationals

Anyone else who would actually like it if we signed Osvaldo? I think getting him for £6.8m (the amount Roma are reportedly asking for) would be a bargain. He's what we need, he'll make things happen and he's scored goals wherever he's played.

Considering the likes of Hooper are going for £5m, I think £6.8m is a good deal for someone like osvaldo.
