How anyone would get above a 5 is mystifying to me, maybe only koeman who thought that was our best performance and the tactics were decided by the watford game, sorry but I thought the criteria for this game was far different from watford game

The worry is we're waiting for injured players to return.all defensive players, we're waiting for transfers in. again only rumoured to be defensive players. The reason we've succeeded in past seasons was the high energy, high press intense game played with what seemed two players, hassling defenders, chasing every ball. can you see tadic, pelle etc doing that!? Plus that game / tactic protected what I'm sorry but if you're honest has never been a strong defence. I know I'm going to get clean sheets, best defence blabla thrown at me but when things are down saints defence has always reverted to the panic Sunday league, sliced clearances, mis kicks and so on. I would stick reed in full time, he still carries some of that high intensity game about him and purchase another out and out goalscorer ( a fit Michael Owen esque would do ) start running for each other and working for each other, at the moment we look all lost at sea

Well done saints another valiant effort tonight another masterclass in route one football long ball to pelle works every time as it has every game so far this season. Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't it called football NOT headball what's the use of sending the ball up to pelle if there's no one there for him to head on too. God I hope bertram is back soon so we can send taggertt out on loan for a seaon to learn about defending and supporting your fellow players that are doing your job jay rod ( a forward) wins the ball and gets no support with our defenders ball watching and they score brilliant well done boys we fought all last season for European football and when we get it we go out to a team that are the equivalent of a Scottish championship level they maybe Danish champions but we are supposed to be top 7 of the best league in the world. Sort it out saints .

I do hope wanyama's diarrhoea gets better soon.

I do wish the tranfer window opened day after the last game of season and closed the day before start of the next then at least teams and players know that's it then all this unsettling bullshit is done and dusted

Im sorry but that was a shocking result. Again no goals, come on guys time to admit we need another striker to help Pelle with the work load. Two words, Charlie Austin!!

What's the point in buying another striker if we're not making the chances? We need creativity. We need someone to play in that hole. The long ball tactic might have worked if we had someone running on from midfield but our running was all wrong. It worked once, with Davis, who isn't exactly known for his high goalscoring rate from midfield. We just don't look like creating anything. The gap between midfield and strike force is huge. I was one of those "rose-tinted" bunch before the season got underway. Well from what I've seen it actually looks pretty desperate. I won't start slagging players. But now that I've seen how much the club's around us, above us and below us have spent I am concerned. Stoke look a serious proposition after their purchases. We look too static, too predictable, and low on confidence and ideas from front to back. Yes we are missing first team players. But the formation was badly wrong last night, the tactics were horrifically wrong. Our shape has been poor all season and doesn't look like getting us goals. We were able to remedy that last year by having a solid defence and riding our luck a little. But if you don't create, can't score, and are leaking poor goals, then you're on for a whipping. Last night's game was relegation form.

Well we now know we are in real trouble.

We have to score goals and Roko plays 5 at the back! Nonsense

How can we avoid a relegation dog fight now?

Splash out now Les Reed.

a ) vvd . At least he is a prospect!

b ) Charlie Austin . He at least knows where the goal is!

C) Get rid of Big Vic while we can get monies for him! Get someone in who can be creative!

If we don't act now, we have a long struggle ahead.

The Europa Cup has gone. Good riddance.

Time for action .

The way we are playing is painful to watch, no effort and no conviction, all we are doing is hoofing it up to pelle in which he wins 1/10. We are becoming so predictable, the opposite to last season.

To quote the manager: "It was our best performance of the season."

That should be the statement that really sends shivers down your spine.

I remember Pochettino trying to take the credit for Saints' good start to last season with the remains of "his squad" and thinking what a cheeky git he was. But he might have been onto something. From the second half of the season up until now, Koeman's Saints - and it surely is his mess of a side now - have been progressively getting worse.

It's worrying, to say the least. There's a whiff of the Michael Laudrups about this: a steller first season, cashing in on the previous manager's hard work, and then found wanting as soon as things got difficult.

Ronald must be still suffering from the after effects of the anaesthetic if he thought that was our best performance of the season so far . If that is what he really thinks we are in big trouble , it was mentioned that the team has gradually deteriorated from the days of MoPo and I agree , we could be in serious problems if things don't change pretty soon.

How many games have saints won this year (since january)? I think other posters have asked this in the past, it equates to relegation (league wise). There has been a decline in Saints performances for a while now, and our quality of recruitment has not been on par with those that have left. Something needs to change

Sorry, but that was absolutely pathetic. Anyone can lose a football match, but to be unable to string two passes together and - on instruction of the manager - spend all game fruitlessly hoofing the ball the length of the pitch in the hope for a lucky break is just disgraceful.

Win, lose or draw, we've come to expect a certain level of football from Saints - the mythical "Southampton Way" - over the past few years, and ugly hoofball it is not.

Koeman ballsed that up royally. Tactically, that was a horror show.

But don't worry everyone, signing one new centre back is going to solve everything. Perhaps we're going to play six at the back.

What a waste of a hard earned opportunity. The die is cast. This is going to be a rough season.

I actually agree with you qwerty.

The only person to blame here tonight is Mr Koeman, the long ball game is just not us. But that said I didn't think before the game that we had a side good enough to progress as I stated earlier in the week. For example Martina is not good enough to play for the skates I'm afraid let alone our club . A Koeman signing that must have been a panic buy when we had a few Injurys pre season.

Playing three CBs when we need to win a game?? I don't get it.

We are not the same without Mane and big Vic so if they are off be it now or next season ( as our players wanting away always get their wish ) then we are in big trouble. It seems as if we are trying to replace great player with mediocre players who may come good. Well that ain't good enough.

I'm afraid for our survival this season but at least we now do not have the distraction of the Europa league.

27 Aug 2015 22:25:47
I agree that Koeman has to take the blame. You can't play five at the back when you have to score. Let alone with no pace and wide men in the team. And why is Martina playing as a right wing back when Cedric is on the bench? Very strange decisions.

However, you said it yourself qwerty. this is going to be a rough season. So maybe tonight is a blessing after all.

Koeman is the main man to blame, playing with 5 defenders? What happened to your 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3? No creativity, JWP not ready for first team football. Koeman needs to sort it out. Lacklustre and no effort.

Maybe some of you will now take off your rose tinted glasses.

We are an absolute disgrace, we look like a league 1 team.

We do not have the squad to compete in any competition.

Koeman doesn't have a clue.

Livid is an understatement. Our odds on being relegated have dropped from 40-1 to 19-1 and rightly so.

We will be relegated

Up to just after the half way line we appear to be in command, then comes the dreaded long ball up front. I just don't understand this style of football, as soon as the ball is in the air it is a favoured position for a defender as he is facing the ball. If our own player does get on the end of it the other members of our team will not know where the ball will drop. I am a great believer in playing the Ball on the deck and down the lines then knock the ball backwards for our forwards or midfielders to run on to it and the opposing team are back tracking (on their back foot). I understand you need quick players for this but we do have them. To me the method we are playing shows a lack of intelligence. The top teams in the league do the above succesfully. I will say that Arsenal do this to such an extreme that they try to walk the ball into the net. We will not succeed tonight without some luck or change of play.

Don't know if anyone watched the Barnsley / Everton game last night but they showed ( both teams ) what cup football is all about and was a great game to watch . WOEFUL!!, only Pelle escapes criticism as at least he fought hard and put in a good shift as per usual.
The team wasn't set up "to go for it", and we clearly lack leadership and confidence.
The result however maybe a blessing in disguise and end up protecting our premier league status, but if things continue in this pattern, that will be a dog fight.
I feel more for the die hard supporters who travelled over to Denmark, their effort not reciprocated in any way.

1-0 h/t. This is inept. Five at the back, a side devoid of all creativity, no tactics other than launching the ball 70 yards up to Pelle.

Almost can't believe what I'm seeing. Koeman's lost the plot. So much for taking the game to them - Saints are meekly drifting out of Europe without so much as a whimper.

It will work so long as he has someone playing off his shoulder to collect the ball and the full backs get down the wings to stretch their defence.

They spent the last 20 minutes or so hoofing it long at Pelle in the first leg and it was pitiful. They were playing much better earlier on in the second half, passing the ball around at pace.

Hopefully that's what Koeman means by being more direct.

New poster here.
Vic is good at breaking up play but his technical ability in my opinion is poor when he has to pass the ball more than 5 yards or shoot. I remember watching the game at home last season against Everton and Harrison made more tackles than the whole of the Everton team put together. Harrison doesn't have the physical presence of Vic but I feel with the right players around him he should be given a chance. Vic is so called ill maybe tomorrow would be a good chance for the lad to start. It would be interesting to hear what other saints fans think

Wanyama is such an underrated player by a lot of saints fans, mainly 'cause most don't understand what he does or expect him to be something he's not. He's not on the pitch to play fancy balls or score 10+ a season, he's there to break up the play & bully the opposition, which he does very well. most compare him to Schneiderlin because they're both 'defensive midfielders' but just like there are strikers there are different types of DM's, Schneiderlin, now Romeu and/Clasie are the 'fancy' ones, Wanyama is the 'simple' one

He's not irreplaceable by any means, there are lots out there like him but he is and has been just as important to the defence as Schneiderlin was and alderweireld supposedly was
