People talking about Gaston Ramirez seem to forget that he has been injured for a major part of this season. He is a quality player although very one footed, his vision is very good and he has great skills and if we were to be in Europe this season he would be a great squad player and would fit in easily to the continental style . Unfortunately he is on big wages and only if he was prepared to take a drop in money would it be worth keeping him . As for Osvaldo I can't believe anybody would seriously have him back and I can honestly say he has been our worst purchase ever.

after what I just read from the sevilla manger on gaston ramirez I think its safe to presume he is more intrested in money than growing and becoming the best player he can. jog on. sevilla wanted to sign him last year after they had on the europa league on a permanent deal and he chose hull for £ reasons. we don't need players like this.

Ramirez only missed the last three games of the season with injury. That's all. Eleven of his twenty-two appearances for Hull were as a substitute. Of his eleven starts, he was substituted in seven of them and sent off in another.

All told, he was as much of a waste of space for them as he has been for Saints. For the wages they're paying them, it makes no sense to keep him on - he's just not good enough. Talented enough, perhaps, but it takes more than talent alone to make the grade.

Yer Cheers Ed's! Very informative. How do you think we will do in the transfer market? Do you think Alderweireld and Austin is unlikely?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I think you must have posted this on the wrong thread! I think Alderweireld is still very possible, it depends on what other offers go in for him though. Austin has a number of options, but QPR are going to try and keep hold of him.}

What's everyone's view on Gaston and Osvaldo? Personally I'd quite like to see Gaston getting a run in the team as I think he could come good, plus he'd add depth to the squad, as for Osvaldo, seems impossible to get rid of due to the issues he seems to have at every club he goes too. If we can't find a buyer next season I almost think the best thing would be too try and re-introduce into the squad if possible and give him some game time, as we need a striker anyway. He may play well and then we maybe able to get back more of the money we spent on him, I know it's a risk but from an investment point of view it maybe a good idea, Koeman may even get the best out of him. Plus you can't deny his quality. Otherwise I just can't see us selling if Boca won't take him, another thing is that (again from an investment point of view), is that we spent £12m on a 28 year old Shane Long, whilst I do actually like Shane Long and think he offers a lot to the team, it's very unlikely that if we are ever to sell him, we'll get anywhere near this value. From his point of view he may want to move to club where he'll play regularly again, especially if we sign someone like Austin and with J Rod back, it puts him very low down in the pecking order. This maybe ambitious but as Long is still very highly regarded at WBA could a cash + player swap deal be offered to WBA for Berahino? I think he'd be a quality signing! This isn't based on anything this is just from an investment point of view, also imag

Just to be clear this isn't what I want for the club, as obviously I don't want Osvaldo back in and I think we should keep Long

Ramirez isn't good enough for the Premier League - he couldn't even get a regular game for a terrible, relegated Hull side who couldn't score. With only one year remaining on his contract, and no chance of Saints offering him a new one (he's already one of their highest paid players), getting rid of him for any kind of price this summer is the only option. They'll take a massive hit on the £12m Cortese blew on him, but he's got no future at Saints or in England.

As for Osvaldo, Saints should look into their legal position and see if they can't terminate his contract and sue him for compensation due to his behaviour. No-one in their right mind would sign him now. Thanks, Cortese.

Getting two of the highest earners off the books, both a waste of space, should be one of the first priorities this off-season. Disastrous signings, the pair of them. £25 million all but written off.

Then there's the less-expensive but equally useless Mayuka, who we're seemingly stuck with until his contract runs down in a few years. Stealing a living, that bloke.

I believe Ramirez is good enough for the premier league and could be useful in Europe, he's shown brilliance in small burst admittedly and hasn't been consistent, but he is a quality player IMO

I heard that Ramirez has been put up for sale. As for Osvaldo I don't think that we would ever try and re-introduce him into the team. He caused too much hassle first time around

Ramirez didn't get a game because he's been injured. You're right that he's too lightweight and too injury prone to be a prem player but he's certainly got and shown the talent. But playing him in the uefa cup against teams which suit his style, he might do well and probably worth keeping for that reason if arsenal win the cup

I was hoping someone could answer my question about where the Saints stand in qualifying for the Europa League after yesterday's announcement concerning West Ham . They have qualified for the competition as winners of the fair play award for all the European teams but just wondered where that leaves us . We were all going to become Arsenal fans this weekend but after this announcement it seems irrelevant if WH are in it anyway . Does this mean that we are definitely in the competition now this has happened or have the Hammers taken the spot we would have had if they had lost the Cup Final to the Gunners. Bit confused over this, any help please? Maybe the Eds. will know the answer hopefully.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The announcement is nothing to do with Southampton at all. The Fair Play League are additional places.}

27 May 2015 16:16:46
As Ed002 has said West Ham gained an additional place which was available to a team in each of the three highest placed leagues in Europe for fairplay this season, that being Netherlands, England and ROI.

As an additional note, from next season Fairplay will no longer reward a qualification spot for Europa League but instead financial bonuses.

So Saints will enter at the Third Qualifying Round if Arsenal win the FA Cup and we should be seeded because of England's UEFA coefficient currently being ranked 2nd. And so we would be drawn against an inferior side.

After that we will have to play a two legged Playoff Round in order to reach the Group Stages. That round we may not be seeded in depending on the coefficient ratings of the clubs who also feature, some of which will be the losing sides from the Third Qualifying Round of the Champions League, so they could have a higher coefficient score.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - The seeding for clubs is using the UEFA club coefficients and Southampton will be close to the bottom of the pile there.}

Thanks for that Ed002 however I am maybe seeming a bit thick here but what happens if West Ham beat Arsenal in the final?

{Ed002's Note - A lot of people will be very shocked. I suspect the bookies will be very happy.}

Seeding of southampton will be near bottom of the pile?and I suppose u believe the Switzerland and Austria and ireland and scottish teams will be better seeded yeah

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - perhaps you should go check the rankings, you don't have a history of European competition to raise yours. You seem to talk a lot, but nothing you have said shows any sign of understanding, perhaps you should try reading about these things before telling people that do understand them that they are wrong.}

28 May 2015 22:29:30
On the European website it states that each countrys association is rated as a whole not individual teams
And on overall rating over 5 seasons is 2nd out of all associations
And on this season were rated 4th so as there site stated it is averaged out over the 5 seasons and our rank in that is second.
But lol I agree if it was worked out by individual clubs we would probably be bottom but it is worked out buy the association as a hole
I did double check on uefa website

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes, but then you have individual rankings for the draws. That is done on the team's ranking, which would put Southampton very near the bottom due to not having played in Europe over the last 5 seasons. The country's association rankings is used to decide how many teams you have in the competitions and when they enter the comp.}
