I've stated recently that I've seen signs from Gaston Ramirez, that he is starting to come good. Following on from today's game what do you think about Ramirez?

Most people seem to think that he needs to be sold, but could he stay and become part of this exciting Saints team?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yes, I believe Gaston could be a real plus in the New Year. Bit worried that without Osvaldo showing fitness and form we are having to play Rickie so much, and suspect that may be an area we see some movement on in January, together with another CB. One would be good, both would really be the icing on the cake.

Yes gaston looked creative, and showed small signs why we paid 12m. I also was impressed with his occasional tracking back. I think he will benefit when wanyama is back in the team, so he can express himself more. It will be interesting to see what happens in January

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Ramirez could do well, needs more time on the pitch to prove himself? Maybe he doesn´t work hard enough, not sure, but he always seems to create going forward, which seems like what we need. What happened to Osvaldo is he injured?

Agree0 Disagree0

Funny how one match can change everyones mind! Thought he did ok against Spurs to, I reckon he could be that creative link we've been searching for

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, Osvaldo is injured, although I'm unsure as to the extent of the injury. Poch seems to have kept it fairly quiet. No doubt this will fuel further speculation of his departure.

With regards to Gaston, I was impressed with him in the last couple of games before yesterday, but at Goodison, Gaston looked awesome. One thing I loved was that he actually hit a quality shot from outside the area - something that we don't see enough of. Displays like yesterday will surely bring on further appearances.

With signs there that Gaston is coming good, I can't see Saints selling him.

The Gaston signing was a huge coup for Saints, with him being touted as a future world class player. Perhaps if Gaston does finally start showing his potential on the pitch game in and game out, Saints fans might realise that they need to be a little more patient with new signings from foreign shores.

Agree0 Disagree0

I really think Saints fans need to get off Gaston s back and start showing him some real support. he's come here, not knowing the language, from a different league and has found it difficult as a result particularly because of Saints style of play. I challenge you however based on his last performance to justify any criticism. He did very well, was a constant threat, and tracked back and did some good defensive work. Which is exactly what MoPo has been wanting from him. He obviously has had to spend long hours in the gym and those of you who train regularly will know how hard that can be. Fingers crossed, he could turn out like a new signing just what we need to open defenses. I hope he plays against Chelsea he deserves to start.

Agree0 Disagree0

^exactly, it's so annoying to hear 'fans' in the crowd moaning about players before they've even come on, I was at goodison and the sighs and moaning about him when he was warming up were annoying, his goal shut them up though. I loved the way he ran over to the fans and gave a kid his shirt, shows it all right there

Sitting 10 points off fourth I'd say that's our European push pretty firmly over. I'm not too disappointed to be honest, we've shown real progress in every way this season, and we all knew this was a long term development.

At this point where does anyone else think we'll finish? I'm going for 8th as I think Newcastle are going to start dropping form post december.

Happy new years fellow saints!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi TJ, Pre-season I suggested that we'd finish 7th or 8th, with 55 to 58 points.

Half way through the season, I still believe that's about right.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's still pretty tight! We have the 2nd half of the season to make up the difference and well if it wasn't for injuries I think we would still be top 4, if we didn't ever have to play Hoiveld, Fox or Gazzaniga we'd be up there for sure and today's result was unlucky, we dominated the play and I'm glad Gaston came on and played so well because he could be a real asset if we can keep him playing like that!

Agree0 Disagree0

Probably 9th, but could be 8th or 10th. Anything else I would be surprised

Agree0 Disagree0

To be honest TJ not making Europe this year was probably for the best look what happened to Swansea and Wigan squads a bit thin yet and we have seen in the league with injuries the squad is a little bear good summer transfer window and Europe is a real possibilty

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, I think top 8 finish would be an excellent finish for this season. It also would give a firm base to build on next season. In our second season in the prem, we are challenging top European clubs home and away which is brilliant IMO.

Any news about Shaw? I keep hoping that Manchester United sign Baines instead but it's still clear that the big clubs want Shaw. I think he will stay for at least another season

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Any news? He has said he doesn't want to leave, and the club have stated he isn't for sale.

What other news about Shaw do you want?

Seems pretty clear to me.

Agree0 Disagree0

In other news about Shaw, I heard someone was having a kick around with him the other day in the park, and, read into this what you like, he was wearing a Dukla Prague away shirt.

Alternative music jokes aside, according to all sources he's staying put.

Agree0 Disagree0

All players say they don't want to leave and managers say' he isn't for sale', next day he is gone, get over it, you're not a big club

Great game today, was a joy to watch, shame about the result. With most injury issues over what does everyone think should happen in january?
I Think the defensive frailties shown over the last few months show we need another CB. I still feel we need a little more going forward wether Ramirez is the person to solve this long term; i'm not sure.
So I think a CB and skillful attacking player who can play wide or down the middle.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd like to see us sign another centre back, ideally English but they're aren't many quality ones knocking about. Caulker is the first name to mind, but having moved so soon I doubt that. I think we need an attacking player with a little more penetration. I find as much as everyones in the right positions and passing well, no one particularly is making that side breaking run to create a clear chance. Danny Ings might be good for that.

Hello everyone,

So today sees Southampton take a trip to Goodison Park to take on the in-form and high flying Everton, which I reckon will be a great game. Could well be a goal fest too, although both sides are strong in defence, and this season have been somewhat misely. The free flowing football which both managers are known for makes this one a lovely way to finish off the year 2013. Can Pochettino's Saints grab all three points, and give Roberto Martinez's Everton back to back defeats for the first time?

Let's hope so!

All those going/gone/at the game, I hope you enjoy it and go careful on those icy roads.

Right, transfer gossip then!

Ashley Cole's on his way to Real Madrid? Cue four and twenty million rumours of Luke Shaw being his replacement at Stamford Bridge then. Damn it!
They also need a replacement for John Terry and Frank Lampard, both of whom I believe have expiring contracts in the summer. Cue talks of Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana being lined up.

Then, there's the biggest rumour of the weekend; If Jose Mourinho "fails" to deliver Chelsea a trophy this season, he will be given the boot by the ruthless Roman Abramovic. Having been linked above with Southampton aces Shaw, Lovren and Lallana, oh yes, it seems Chelsea may also want to get their grubby hands on Mauricio Pochettino too!

Enjoy the Everton away game, I predict 2-2 thrilling draw.

JWP and Kelvin both made mistakes today, I wonder if they'll be moaned about or if it's just foreign players getting used to the league that get moaned about? Gaston scored an incredible goal, it could rival Osvaldo's, I wonder who'll moan about him not being good enough today.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I'll always back the homegrown players, if they seem like good lads who put the work/effort in.
I would imagine with goals like that one today, as soon as the likes of Barcelona or Madrid come calling, Ramirez will have his suitcases packed.

And I will still happily drive him to the airport.

Saint Etienne.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't think lallana or lovern would get into Chelsea not good enough

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea would love to have Lovren, he would be preferred to David Luiz who is better as a CDM and he is better than Gary Cahill also, plus he has far more time left in him than John Terry and can play successive matches which Terry is starting to struggle to do. I have spoken to Chelsea fans and they all think that Lovren was an incredible buy as they thought a club like them would get him and he'd get straight into their first 11.

Agree0 Disagree0

No way! .
