Celtic were thrashed 4~1 by Legia Warsaw tonight. Warsaw also missed two pens. Unless they can reverse that scoreline (unlikely) I'd say Forster and van Dijk will be on their way to Saints very soon. Here's hoping. And welcome to St. Mary's Ryan Bertrand. Good luck to him. Let's hope he can give it his all for Saints- especially at Anfield

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sorry Ed007, who was it you were supposed to be hunting down? Shame that went so badly wrong, I for one was expecting a clear Celtic win to be on the cards but I guess you can never write anyone off in football.

Don't mean to kick you when you're down or anything of the sort, but do you think that result increases the likelihood of Forster and Van Dijk coming sooner rather than later or are they more likely to be held to try to claw back the result?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I still expect Celtic to be in the draw for the next round. Forster and van Dijk will still be playing for Celtic next Wednesday, there's no way we will sell van Dijk this week with Ambrose now banned for the next leg. Celtic are more than capable of beating Legia Warsaw by 3 clear goals, a 3-0 win and we go through and we usually do it the hard way! The fact the game's at Murrayfield and not Celtic Park could make it tricky, if it was at CP I would be totally confident of progressing.
A few stories floating about up here saying that van Dijk fancies a move to Spurs over Southampton, especially if they qualify for the Europa League.}

31 Jul 2014 08:36:03
Thank you ed007 you have cheered me up no end. I thought it was just us Saints suffering from delusions. (Re the 3 goal deficit)…. I do agree with you, however regarding the destination of vanDijk any player of any note is unlikely to choose Saints.
A club just having sold its 5 best players with more likely to follow is hardly an attractive proposition until we stabilise.
That stabilisation process would not have been required if the board had refused to sell until replacements found. Thus we would never have been more than one quality down at any one time.
Don't get me wrong while I'm not behind the board, I am and always will be right behind the boys in stripes.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Celtic can beat anyone 3-0 on their day.}

I am pretty sure I've seen teams come back from worse, example Liverpool in 2005 came back from 3 down at half time to beat AC Milan who possibly were a better side. Celtic are a great side on their day and as they showed against Barcelona with the 2-1 they can be outstanding on their day. Celtic are definitely capable of coming back from a 3 goal deficit. The question really is, will they?

Van Dijk might not choose us, but you would hope Koeman could give a fair pull to him and with a fairly large amount of luck maybe we will see him in a Saints shirt after Celtic's home game vs Legia Warsaw.

Agree0 Disagree0

Didn't mean to be disrespectful Ed 007. Saints fans are without question gagging for fresh faces through the door and whichever club we sign them from deserves our respect and gratitude. I went to an old firm derby in the 90's and I have rarely experienced an atmosphere like it. Good luck for the new season. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for Rangers to get back to your division to give Celtic some humdinger games in the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Don't be silly, I've got a thick skin and it's all just a bit of banter. I deserve to take some stick after my team's performance last night!}

Looks like Forster and Van dijk are keen to get the transfer to us done after Celtic said they want the CL situation sorted first by losing 4-1 tonight.

Should be able to rap these two up soon then.

Bertrand's a great signing! We now have 2 good players at LB, I'm glad Koeman wants to keep to an English core. Hopefully this is the first of many this week! This probably means Rojo will not be signed now, but if he is, he will obviously play CB rather than LB, I reckon Forster will be next! COYR!

Ryan Bertrand in on loan, I hope with the loan signing of Ryan Bertrand I'm not alone in feeling rather worried. We have hauled in a humungous amount of wonga and yet are LOANING barely average premier league players. Bertrand barely got a game at villa and their relegation scrappers.
I hope to high heavens there is truth behind the Clasie rumour or in fact any rumour. We need players, asap.

Saints sign Ryan Bertrand on season-long loan from Chelsea. Idea behind this to provide competion and cover for Targett but with the intention of Targett being the first-team choice in future and giving Bertrand first-team chances now so Chelsea take him back for the next season or possibly for Saints to buy in future. Nicked him from Liverpool's hands which is sweet but unusual for Saints to make a loan signing.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think now we've signed Bertrand, Target will play back up to him and be slowly broken into our prem first team

Agree0 Disagree0

Can you tell me where it states we have an option to buy in the future?

Agree0 Disagree0

Honestly I think it is unofficial but the Guardian and possibly other media are saying Saints may have to cough up £10m if they wish to buy him:

Ryan Bertrand on a season long loan confirmed.

Well that's. underwhelming. Poor player - Villa fans thought he made them worse when he joined them on loan last season.

This is Ralph's vision of reinvesting all that transfer moolah into the squad then: sell a quality left back for £30million, replace him with Chelsea's third choice left back on a loan.

Cheap and cheerful. It's the new "ambitious".

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I disagree, he's a good attacking full back, it's a loan so Target has time to develop whilst having a proven player in place for the time being, he's a good player I'm very happy with that

Agree0 Disagree0

So much for reinvesting the millions gained on a new squad, we're also getting another loan in the Osvaldo deal, is this the future of our club, loan deals? Smells a bit like 2005 when we looked at loan deals and we all know what happened then!

Kreuger needs to show his word means something and players need to know where they stand. If Kreuger said spider not leaving this window then that should be that. Got the funds to survive sticking him in reserves until next window but I guess he'd want to keep interest once message gets through. Meanwhile we find replacement, bring on youngsters and gel team. Let him chuck his toys, still in contract - use it.

I am saying this only once more!

It is all the fault of the board and nobody else!

They refuse to pay wages worthy of a player playing in Europe.
The players were promised bonuses to help with their underpayments if we did well enough last season ( which they did )
The board basically said 'thanks for how you played but stuff you'.
OK it was Cortese that promised the bonus and it was Cortese that put all in place to rise from league 1 to the prem.
So why not give something back to the players that got us there.
No wonder they were all disappointed and hence now they want to leave.

Thanks very much Katherine for ruining the whole of the last 5 years of progress and for ruining your own fathers wishes.
God rest Marcus. but Katherine you have to go and take the two liars you employed with you.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Cortese didn't exactly get everything right himself you know. He also made decisions which were very highly questionable in his first year and a half in charge and during our first Premiership season. Osvaldo, Forren and Sharp are all players who had some form of controversy under Cortese, Forren came and never even earned a game in a defence which was frankly shocking.

Give the new board a chance, they are trying to build a long run sustainable top level club, not an overnight sell out team like QPR's owners have done. I'll take the hard way to footballing success over the Redknapp way any day of the week.

Agree0 Disagree0

And sorry I forgot to add, you forget Reed was part of the set up under Cortese as well, he joined us in 2010 and has been a major part of the transfer talks and youth operations here under Cortese and his successor Krueger.

Agree0 Disagree0

They refuse to pay wages worthy of a player playing in Europe. - due to the ffp we can't offer higher wages. That won't change until the club start selling out games regularly, unless you want to pay double your season ticket price

The players were promised bonuses to help with their underpayments if we did well enough last season ( which they did ) - they were promised bonuses by cortese that the club couldn't afford and they were told the club couldn't afford them.

So why not give something back to the players that got us there. - basically getting premiership wages in L1 and the championship isn't giving them something back no?

No wonder they were all disappointed and hence now they want to leave. - why isn't it every player? It's more the players who have started to like the smell of their own that have wanted to leave

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed003's Note - we don't allow calling people's loyalty to a club because it just ends in childish rows - please don't do it again.}

1x1 I hear your frustration fella but the facts are we can't afford to pay heavy gauge wages with the income we have due to the financial fair play rules.
Also it doesn't make business sense to pay out more than we are getting in.
Once we get to a stage of a waiting list for season tickets like some other clubs and full sell out crowds week in week out then we can push to further develop the ground I'd of thought. Increase the capacity and increase our revenue.
One of Freddy K's remits was and is to increase our global presence. If he can do that then we will gain have more money coming in through shirt sales and sponsorship.

My frustration lies with people saying they won't renew their season ticket or want to return it or not going to watch matches. Fans doing that are reducing the income and then reducing the amount we can spend on wages.
I see that in exactly the same way as Morgan handing in a transfer request. Toys being chucked out of the pram.

I'll be heading to a couple of games this year and it costs me an absolute fortune to travel. but I'll still be there.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 Jul 2014 20:28:18
I guess so. The media just want a good story and what better a story than a club being ripped apart. They don't deal in truth they just want the best story. They write what people want to hear and I presume there are more people out there wanting to hear that spider wants to go than not. I've seen an article in the mirror saying clyne, fonte and cork have all handed in transfer requests, and that I don't believe for a second. Hi saints, first of all I would like to share my sympathy regarding your situation (I was crying about the Gareth bale saga) I thought with your style of play you were going somewhere and maybe even challenge for Europa league (after all us spurs fans know all about that)

Anyway my point is that the 'spider' as you call him saga is quite confusing. Do you think he has handed in a transfer request or what? My friend says he is the most loyal player at your club, so why would he want to move to spurs (I rate him highly by the way) anyway good luck and I hope you guys escape the mess you're in,
Spursredeemer

30 Jul 2014 20:17:22
Don't know why you are asking this question, as you had info. two days ago it was a virtual done deal!

I suspect he was offered a lot of dosh, and maybe the captaincy, to join Spuds and a nice big payday for his representatives.

However, Saints need to draw a line and say we will not sell any core players after this date otherwise we have no time to replace. Think they have now done this and that they will stick to their guns-especially as they have no incentive to accept cut price offers.

Agree0 Disagree0

You guys just need to hope spider doesn't boycott training that's all. How can it be a done deal and off at the same time?

Agree0 Disagree0

I do not believe he has handed in a transfer request, but he probably has at least suggested to the club he would like a move as a lot of the players he has enjoyed working with have moved on leaving him behind. He doesn't seem the sort to throw a strop, which made his twitter comment confusing and really I would hope he would clear the air around that at some point.

As for the offers from Spurs, apparently they fall far below an acceptable value and if Spider were to go I imagine Spurs, Arsenal or whoever would have to be willing to pull out the chequebook and write a ridiculously oversized whopper to prize him from us. The board otherwise would be under such a slating from the fans for their promise of his remaining at our club.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 11:15:46
Spursredeemer-it was YOU who said it was a virtual done deal. It was not. YOUR info. was incorrect.

By the way, he is training-energetically!

Do you work in the media? You are trying to produce a story without any accurate information.

Just like the media who made up a story about Freddie meeting Spuds people in Canada and that was to discuss transfers from Saints. Yes, a meeting took place but the discussions were about something completely different.

I am not convinced Spider will move to anyone this window. An offer was made which was around 50% of our valuation and I suspect there has now been pressure upon our board to prevent sales of core players too close to the end of the window-hence the line being drawn now. I think you have been too late and too mean with your offer. Maybe better to look again in January, if our grass is not looking greener and yours hasn't died!

From current rumours I've made a predicted shortlist of the club's targets:

Jordy Clasie - Feyenoord
Terence Kongolo - Feyenoord
Vincent Aboubakar - Lorient (Ligue 1, France)
Stefan Savić - Fiorentina
Leroy Fer - Norwich
Ron Vlaar - Aston Villa
Marcos Rojo - Sporting Lisbon
Virgil Van Dijk - Celtic
Fraser Forster - Celtic
(Saphir Taïder - Inter)

I believe I've covered everyone but please leave a response if I've missed anyone out.

Nathan Redmond - Norwich
Jonathon Biabiany - Parma (Serie A, Italy)

I just want the season to start so I can get on with supporting my club and whoever happens to be playing for us. can't stand all this petulance from players etc who seem to have more money than sense and feel the need to tweet about stuff that should be left behind closed doors. Osvaldo is going to Inter on loan with a view of a permanent deal and in exchange, we get Saphir Taider on loan, also with a view of a permanent deal. I think this is quite good business. What do you guys think?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No-one will pay money to take Osvaldo in a permanent deal. He'll be farmed out on loan for the duration of his contract and leave on a free.

Saints might save a bit of money on his wages, but they won't get a penny of his transfer fee back.

A truly terrible signing.

As for Taider, I'm not sure Saints need another central midfielder. They've already got 6 players for 3 positions (Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Cork, Davis, Ward-Prowse and Reed), so I can only assume if they bring him in, someone else is leaving. And it wouldn't really be satisfactory, IMO, to replace them with a loan, when the club has raked in around £100m in transfer fees.

As a replacement for Scheiderlin, I don't think he's appropriate, quality-wise. Perhaps Cork's off?

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd rather take Honda than the other player

Agree0 Disagree0

Les Reed has said Cork can go for £5m, he's not part of RK's plans. Swansea are first club to agree to the fee.

I see Virgil van dijk could be on his way here, I think he would be a great signing, young and talented, but I'd rather see him replace Jose fonte, rather than lovren, as I feel lovren defence wise was fantastic for us, I feel van dijk to replace fonte, and a player like natastic for example to replace lovren. Just my opinion off course. Feel free to leave you views aswell.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We don't need to replace Fonte as he's not gone anywhere. Frankly I'd like to see two centre half additions like Van Dijk and Nastasic to A) enable Koeman's prefered 5-3-2/3-5-2 formation and B) give us more cover at the back.

Agree0 Disagree0

Do you think Vlaar would be good signing if we could get him? Would have liked to have seen de vrij at Saints, but Lazio beat us to him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Tbh I don't want vlaar, Ino he's a great player but he's old and not to the standard off lovren IMO

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a fake Schneiderlin twitter account to make out he wants to leave the club anything is possible when there is 20+ million up for grab$

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If MS cannot behave like an adult, I suggest fining him and sending him home to cool off. Under no circumstances allow the transfer. You must not reward bad behaviour. Message from Schneiderlin on his twitter feed after Krueger's statement today: "6 years of an amazing journey #saintsfc DESTROYED in 1 hour!!"

Unless he has had his account hacked by an Arsenal / Tottenham fan or this is unrelated to the statement made (though unlikely) I'm guessing we have another player who wants out. Waiting to see if Rodriguez is feeling the same way.

More shocks coming out of st Mary's, we were told saints wasn't selling Morgan, but his twitter says different. He's said in the last half hour. "6 amazing years with saints, destroyed in one hour".
Does that mean he's looking for a move and sulking because saints didn't tell him he's staying?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Just see schneiderlin put on twitter 6 years of an amazing journey destroyed in one hour. Is he sulking because we said he is not for sale because if he is then just sell him. All of these players think they are so much better than what they are because they had a international blip and a little bit of interest from other clubs.
