Good preparation by RoKo and his team. We didn't get carried away, didn't play too well, but still won at a bit of a canter and conceded nothing. If we score the first goal next week then we might become a bit more expansive.

The media may have missed RoKo stating quietly a while ago that he knew what it took to win in Europe. Last night shows he and the team put that into practice without fuss. (Bit different to Wet Spam!) Maybe the pundits will catch on if we make the finals! (Suspect not-it would only be because all the other teams had bad games along the way.)

How about we sign Joel Campbell from arsenal decent player with pace that we lack use j rod in the hole as I fear he'll have lost a bit of pace and sign savic as a cb? Thoughts

I would love that I could see it happening as well!

Campbell looks to be going to Palermo and Savic` signed for Atlético Madrid a few days ago.

Ok still I'd go for Campbell and centre halts there are plenty umtitti from Lyon or sokratis, subotic from Dortmund though not sure either of these are left sided other than umtitti as fonte can only play right side cb

And people complain about Mane diving! If you want to see one of the most ridiculous dives in football history, Google "Joel Campbell Matt Besler." Campbell is a whiny, annoying little cheat and I don't want him anywhere near my club!

Well, Umtiti will be playing in the Champion's League with Lyon and I would assume that Subotic` would have quite high wages since he only signed a new contract with Dortmund 2 months ago. Southampton will be looking for defenders in teams which won't be competing in Europe this season and will want to play in the Premier League. For example: Iñigo Martínez, Djilobodji, Nkoulou, Glik, Hector Moreno or maybe even Cáceres of Juventus who after injury got few games (14) last season.

Just don't feel we have enough European experience at the back imo

Mentioned this 2wks ago exactly the player we need in the central creative attacking midfield role

correct me if I'm wrong but Shakiri's a winger isn't he?

Shaqiri plays in Tadic's role - a left-footed right-sided attacker, cutting inside.

With Tadic, McQueen and (for now) Ramirez around, I can't see Saints viewing that position/role as a priority in terms of recruitment.

Great win for our first official match. Soares proves just why he should be Portugal number one. Wanyama man of the match for me, I'm sure many will agree. I can't wait until he forms an understanding with Clasie just like Spider's and Cork's partnership few seasons ago, they'll be rock solid. Great play from Juanmi for the third goal, sees two vitesse players on the line, didn't think it'd go in if he took a shot, so he looped it over to long who was unmarked, and what a decision that proved to be! Good stuff so far

Clasie played a lot of short passes and didn't look up to speed. The rest of the team in the first half looked great.
I'm sure he will improve with time.

Wasn't impressed with clasie at all. Pedestrian.

It's an interesting one.
If Reed had put in the performance that clasie did last night there would be a lot of people on here saying he wasn't ready, out of his depth etc.
obviously he needs time and I hope he improves.

From last nights performance we need to sign big Vic on a long term contract as soon as. He looked immense.

Like most of you, I was slightly disappointed by Classie last night. From watching clips of him on the net, I expected him to play that 'Morgan' role of collecting the ball from our defence, and building the play, but it was Victor doing that role.

I'm sure that it was very strange for Classie, and it seemed that the occasion got the better of him - new team/new country/new baby.

Still, no need to panic just yet. I'm sure that he'll work out just fine.

I would just like to say though just how impressed I was by Stekelenburg. I have to say I actually felt more comfortable with him in goal than when Fraser is in goal.
Think he'll be a top notch signing for us, and could be interesting to see whether Fraser can get him out of the side

That's a good shout about stek and Fraser.
I thought he looked top draw, commanded his area and made a great save when needed.
Our defence looked comfortable with him behind them which hasn't been the case with our back up keepers last season.

Totally agree about Stekelenburg , I know he didn't have to do much but I just had a feeling he was in control of his box and gave confidence to the back four in front of him . He read the game well and at least he can kick the ball straight with either foot. I agree with the above posts that I think Fraser will have quite a job displacing him when he is fit again and as you all know FF makes me nervous especially in his six yard area . Can't put my finger on why but Stekelenburg just seems pretty cool and relaxed and it somehow shows in his performance . A poster last week said he looked very shaky and we should play Gazzaniga , I don't see that at all . Maybe it is just me but I think we have brought in a top class keeper .

Wondering how you all see the midfield shaping up as the season settles in. I think it's clear that Clasie and Wanyama will have the two cdm spots nailed down unless injury and fatigue set in (if so Reed and Davis will cover). If Koeman sticks to his current formation who will dominate the attacking midfield role? A lot of the players used for it seem more comfortable on either wing. With J-Rod back it would be good to see him take back his position on the left with Mane on the right. Pelle or Long upfront with Juanmi for extra cover so does that leave Tadic and JWP? I hope Prowse settles in more this season.

if wanyama goes down we will really be missing some physicality there. we need another back up. Gueye would have been good but there will be other options.

31 Jul 2015 06:18:28
I agree. A tenacious play breaker for back up is high on my list along with another cb. Gueye would fit the bill.

Like with many teams - if we lose our two starting CDM - Wanyama & Clasie - we're stuffed!

Agreed last night showed how big vic is maturing into a class player, albeit bit of help but seem to run midfield on his own last night, could be better than 'makalele???' Please Les tie him down for another 4yrs
