I wonder how the players that have left us recently are actually feeling at the moment apart from a lot more wealthy than they were . Morgan sat on the bench for the last two games and not even being used as a substitute when United were being hammered . AL used as a bit part player along with prima donna Lovren who must now realise that he was made to look a much better player than he is because of the defence he played in with us . Nathaniel Clyne has been steady but nowhere near the player he was 18 months ago with us . Toby looks half the player at Spurs that he did here which I think emphasises how that defence of ours especially in the first half of last season will be difficult to match again . NOW, we have kept the best full back in the league by miles in Ryan and have a defence that is starting to look sharp and together as a unit . I get a bit angry that we won't or can't take the next step to our next level because we have to run a tight ship which leads me to believe this is probably as good as it gets . The best players will leave for mainly financial reasons, I don't really buy in to this ( I want to win something thing, too much ) even though that may be a small element of their desire to leave but basically it's all about money . We have a top class manager who is working wonders with recruitment and squad management however he will probably move on at the end of next season . He would only stay if by then the structure of the club has decided to push on with the dream that Marcus had . I think this won't happen and we will be left to rebuild again . Seems a shame that all we ever hear from the pundits and media is which of our players will leave and which top teams they will go to, very frustrating . We as fans pay a great deal of money to watch our side play but if we want to expand the stadium we need an incentive to attract more season ticket holders . We won't get anybody shelling out the best part of £1000 in advance if the team disintegrates at the end of the season or when the January window opens . Finally I feel a bit for our talisman Rickie Lambert who now is basically washed up as far as playing on a regular basis goes . He followed his dream which turned in to a nightmare and must lay in bed thinking of the glory days with Southampton and wondering whether he made the wrong decision . He may not have got a place in our first team squad on a regular basis but I am sure they would have found somewhere to fit him in. He was part of the reason why we are where we are today and that will I think stay in his mind forever . Very important the next two games especially the Leicester game, win that well and with the state Villa are in can't see Sherwood putting out more than a reserve team for the cup game . We can win that competition, wouldn't mind a trip to Wembley it would be so nostalgic . 2009 winners of the JPT and 7 years on challenging for a CL place and winning top trophies . More than a dream all this, we could be on the brink of something special but only if the club backs us to do it and that will only happen if the ground is sold out a couple of weeks in advance of the games no matter which sides we are playing . Come on Hampshire / Wiltshire / Dorset make the dream come true.

Totally agree with Chrisdownj, but unfortunately Southampton ARE a selling club.
CL is a pipe dream, you need to KEEP your best players and we don't.
RK will move on, and we all need to enjoy the good times while they last.
It's laughable that in one tabloid Manchester United had offered 13m in the transfer window for Mane, and we bought him for 11.5m.
If we are to sell, double at least or not at all, in my book I would sell Mane for nothing less then 30m, but not until the summer.lol

WhyWhy are we speculating who will stay and who will leave?

This shows a mentality that is

a) its first and foremost a business
b) its secondly a football club

Only a few clubs can buy buy buy, discard discard discard . We are not one.

If the PL is to prosper then financial fair play must be enacted. That must say clubs are limited to how much they can spend each financial year.

What is the point of teams like MSN U and Liverpool spending millions and still ending up second rate sides? Poor in the Champs League and poor overall?

Best bet for PL is to say that a contract is a contract and that once made a player must see out his contract to the full.

This year's PL is already proving to be a disaster for the loyal fans. Why should you have to sell your best players to build a stadium? This inhibits any smaller club from advancing .

Get all Saints long term assets on 5 year contracts which includes a phrase that they must serve out their contracts as the club demands? This will stop ridiculous signings like Falco on mega bucks!

Good post gtsaint but as you have said the game is finished as a sport and is entirely a business . The unfortunate thing is that the major clubs that have been around for ever but are not doing that well can stil hold a grip on FFP due to their size and history. Seems all wrong to me and prohibits clubs like ours from moving forwards . In other words it is a closed shop .

Hi Guys,

Good post Chrisdownj.
The one thing that gives me a little confidence about the future of the club, is that they have set the Champions league as a target. Now I'm not saying that we'll get there any time soon, but the one thing that the management of the club has done since St Marcus took over the club is be true to their words time and time again. Hell, most fans were ridiculing Cortese when he came out and said that we wanted to be challenging in the premier league, when we were in Div 1.

I for one have faith in the club management, and while it would probably be the biggest challenge of all, there is hope that we may eventually get there.
Keep Calm
