If the rumours that are continuously flying around the internet about other teams waging war over signing Southampton players are true, we won't be able to field a team.

Pablo Osvaldo - Juventus, Boca Juniors
Gaston Ramirez - Inter, Galatasaray, Lazio, Dortmund
Luke Shaw - Everyone
Adam Lallana - Liverpool
Morgan Schneiderlin - Arsenal, Inter
Jay Rodriguez - Liverpool, Arsenal
Nathaniel Clyne - Chelsea
Jack Cork - Fulham

Believable2 Unbelievable8

I know one of the above to be true.

Agree4 Disagree8

I can see all the interest being genuine. But not expecting any to actually happen.

Ramirez back to an Italian club seems the most likely of all.

Jack Cork is better than warming our bench, unfortunately. I'd hate to see him go but with first team football he could be in with a shout of international football.

Agree11 Disagree2

Cortese did say his ambition was to field a full 11 of academy players lol we would certainly be the richest club in football if this happened lol

Agree0 Disagree1

Jack cork is better than warming our bench, but he's also better than Fulham! Lallana is going nowhere, I can't see us letting osvaldo go unless someone pays us 20 mill. Morgan ie going nowhere, j-rod has just broken into the England squad, why would he want to leave? I don't think we'd let clyne go. He's a future England right back. We don't need to sell! We won't be bullied by the bigger clubs. Gaston can go i'm not that fussed. All the rumours come from lazy journo's who hate Southampton and what we're achieving, they all support chelsea. Well they're in for a shock. Can u really see cortese selling all these players? don't tbink so.

Agree5 Disagree3

Not all rumours come from lazy journos, at least one if not more of the above are true.

I think it will take a few transfer windows to pass before other people realise just how tight a group of loyal players Saints have at the moment.
They are part of something special here, they are on a journey to the top, many having joined saints when they were seven or eight years old and have been here for at least ten years now.
Lallana, Shaw and others could have easily left for bigger clubs before but they chose to stay and sign new contracts and it is paying off for them now and they realise it.

Lets be sensible about this shall we?

Cortese has a burning ambition to have Saints playing Champions League football. He's also talking about Saints boosting our income by 100% in 3 years. Now how can he do that? The biggest slice of boost would come from Champions League football, or increasing the stadium capacity through a new stadium or expansion. Sponsorship deals would also come into the equation, and our shirt deal is up next year.

Cortese is unlikely to want to sell any of the above, other than potentially Gaston Ramirez - who is on relatively big wages and not featuring regularly.

So, the only players that would leave (other than Gaston) would be players that demand to leave.

Bearing in mind, Cortese has delivered everything he said he would, and these players have faith in the club and the manager. All these guys are young, and have plenty of time to earn big wages.

What is more important is what the team is achieving currently. They are achieving international honours by playing for Saints, and for the 18 yr olds, they are actually getting a chance to play first team football.

The majority of players have been together for a long time, and the team spirit at Southampton is exceptional.

So why would any of these guys want to leave, when they can achieve all they would wish, if they stay where they are? As for the younger kids, it's being demonstrated that with the correct guidance and game-time that they can develop into top class players at Southampton.

Saints have at least 7 players that aren't too far away from making the step up to the first team, most of whom have been together since they were 8 yrs old. These guys are best friends as well as team-mates. Could you imagine playing premier league football with your best mates?

These guys aren't going anywhere unless Cortese wants them to go, or we get obscene offers for our players. Even then, the loss of a Lallana, Schneiderlin etc would potentially damage our march on to the Champions league, and consequently not viable.

St. Christopher, I salute u!

Agree10 Disagree1

St Chris is quite correct. Never underestimate the strength of the gang mentality. Bunch of young lads tearing the Premiership a new one. where would you rather be?

Agree5 Disagree2

For all of Saints high profile performances this season and the fantastic way Cortese runs the club - the so called big clubs of English football - Liverpool and Spurs mainly - still think they can click their fingers and walk in with 20 million to spend and take our best players. NO MORE BOYS.
Things are different at Saints now - get used to us being around coz we ain't going nowhere.

Agree7 Disagree1

St Christopher you speak actual sense! and that's very rare on this forum as the BS detector seems to be broken on the forum filter. Saints are not a selling club anymore! we spend money on wages and the transfer fees to which only 4 other clubs spent more than us this summer. MP and NC are building a bright Dynasty for this club and the only way that will work is by not selling your best players. So to all the rumour mongers stop posting crap! think before you type and most of all be realistic. May Saints forever be fruitful and stay in third or above and MOPO forever!

Agree1 Disagree1

What I'd point out to those who think that our players, especially our younger lot, have by and large signed long term contracts in the last year or so. Also Cortese will push for massive offers if he is to sell, so even if we did it's not like it wouldn't still be a good sale.

Agree1 Disagree1

Just going on from my earlier post, I think people need to ask why a player would want to leave.

In the past, Saints players have had to leave to get International recognition, get Premier League, or potentially Champions League football.

Many of the squad will know Theo Walcott, and Chaimberlin, who have had intermittent careers at a 'big' club, while in turn they have been allowed to play catch up - getting regular game-time. So while it's exciting going to a 'big' club, it isn't guaranteed that they'll actually play - risking their development.
Even Bale, our biggest recent export struggled when he originally went to Spurs.

Premiership football is here to stay.
Players are being rewarded for their club form with International calls.
Champions League Football is still a dream; but it may well be closer than many people think.

Cortese is smart enough to know that eventually there will be players looking to move on to clubs bigger than Southampton. However as a club, while we are offering our players so much, it's unlikely that our star players will wish to leave.

If there is one thing that always strikes me regarding our academy developed players, its how well adjusted they are. They seem to be fairly humble, hard-working and generally have their feet on the ground. Put this together with the advantages of having a high proportion of Academy players - they develop a deeper affinity for the club.

Yes - there is always the lure of playing for a 'big' club - if Barca came in for Lallana to replace the injury-ridden Messi (for example)- I'm sure he'd struggle to say no. However the lure of 'Big Clubs' and 'Big wages' are something every club has to face.

Thank God for Marcus Liebher that gave us the (financial) strength to hold on to our multi-talented youngsters.

Danny Welbeck has pulled out of the England squad, which means J-Rod could get a start! He'll definitely play now, at minimum from the bench. Huzzah!
